Laura Gallop is co-host of Berkhamsted Revisited: A Teenage Diary Podcast. Laura’s friend and co-host (also called Laura), kept a diary for 6 years, and each week they read out an excerpt and cringe about the things they did between the ages of 13 and 19.
Why did you think sharing your deepest darkest teenage secrets would be a good idea for a podcast?
People are nosy and there’s a huge demand for recent nostalgia, so we thought using the diaries would be a great way to connect with our collective pasts. We don’t really get embarrassed telling the stories either – the beauty of it is that everyone was a teenager once and went through similar things we’re talking about.
If you could go back to 2005 what would you take?
Well I’ve got my own debit card now so I’d love to go back and buy those polyphonic ringtones and wallpapers from the back of Bliss magazine – something from Sugababes and a topless photo of David Beckham would do nicely. Other Laura would also probably tell me to take some make-up removal wipes and scrub of the excessive black eyeliner I used to wear everyday.
What’s been the funniest moment?
Early on we asked listeners to send in their first email addresses and MSN names and there were so many good ones – tributes to bands and lots of underscores @hotmail.com. Sometimes the more everyday memories are the funniest. That said, talking about when I cried (happy tears) after losing my virginity was pretty funny. We had the greatest number of emails after that episode.
Speaking of emails, what’s the best email you’ve received from a listener?
I told a story on one episode about my ‘MySpace boyfriend’ when I was 15, who was a boy I never met but was madly in love with. This guy heard about the podcast from his current girlfriend and emailed in. We also had one girl explain how she had to convince her mum that she had started her period, and that it wasn’t skids in her knickers – “Mum, that ain’t shit!” had us both in hysterics.
You’ve started inviting guests onto the show and talking about their teenage years – who would be your dream guest?
To be honest, I really fancied both Roman Kemp and Tom Grennan, so I got them on the show. Having Dick and Dom in the studio was a huge throwback and felt like I was back in front of the TV on a Saturday morning, so I’d love to have a few more blasts from the past on the show – maybe the guy from Raven? He was fit.
