This Week’s Must-Listen:

Evolution of Horror
Mike Muncer returns for this fifth (?) series of his exploration of the history of horror cinema. This time, he’s focusing on representations of the Occult in film. Reaching back further than ever into film history, the inaugural episode explores early cinema of the 1890s, discussing the invention of camera trickery and almost immediate symbiosis of moving images and horror. This will likely be the best series of this podcast so far!

Films To Be Buried With- Episode 69 with Jordan Brookes

Another film podcast in this edition of the Book of Joe blog this week, but, as Mark Kermode ensures that Jaws is not about a shark, Brett Goldstein’s show is not about films. Jordan Brookes gives a surprisingly candid insight into his mental health over the past year. Brett listens intently as Jordan discusses his relationship with suicidal thoughts and how winning the Perrier(?) award at the Edinburgh Fringe was not the life marker he had expected. Genuinely moving, this episode proves that podcasts can do what no other medium can- give air to frank and open conversation which will hopefully help someone somewhere.

THIS WEEKS MUST LISTEN:

CLASH OF THE TITLES

Alex Zane, Vicky Crompton and Chris Tilly go head to head in this movie podcast, a verbal duel to decide, definitively, which film out of a selection of 2-3 is the superior. Like all good podcasts, the group’s dynamic is the real star, whether it be celeb-story one-upmanship or Alex constantly looking for a piece of movie trivia Chris has yet to discover. Recent highlights include the 3-way bout of Batman vs The Dark Knight vs Joker, within which are detailed analyses about each protrayal of the clown prince of crime, and Shaun of the Dead vs Zombieland- one of which features Chris’ hand appearing at a window in a pivotal scene!

The episode features a story which takes place in a tent, during a wedding, in Essex which caused me to have to pull over while driving as I was nearly sick from laughing. The less you know, the better, but for God’s sake go and give this a listen!

I’m not a huge wrestling fan these days, but I did previously dabble with sports entertainment some years ago. One of my favourite wrestlers during that time was CM Punk and I found him to be a fascinating person. It’s amazing how many wrestlers are high school nerds in jock bodies! In this second round of conversation with host Chris Hardwick, the pair discuss keeping a healthy routine, the differences Punk has felt in training for wrestling versus training for MMA and (here’s the nerd bit) the best finds in antique shops!

THIS WEEKS MUST LISTEN:

Insane in the Men Brain with Rich Wilson

Rich Wilson’s podcast has featured before in the Book of Joe blog, but this week’s release was a really special one. IITMB’s aim is to get men discussing their mental health as readily as they would discuss any other given subject. What Rich Wilson achieves with each episode (proven by the number of messages he receives from people with whom he connects) is a gradual dismantling of  the idea of mental and emotional issues being suppressed by machismo. I genuinely believe this will be a historic social artefact when masculinity in the 21st Century will be studied. Frank and moving conversations about struggles suffered by some of the most talented people working today are showcased, particularly in the past week with producer SVNTY6, which for me is a standout podcast.

This episode of the Horne Section Podcast reunites Taskmaster co-hosts and comedians Alex Horne and Greg Davies. Greg and the band recite their Royal Variety Performance song about two very different Grandmothers and songs are sung using different translations of one solitary word. Extra points given for guessing the word before the song is over. Upbeat and hilarious listening!

White Wine Question Time with Kate Thornton- Scroobius Pip, Stu Whiffen and Chris Glasson

It’s a lovely thing to begin listening to a podcast because you are familiar with the guest(s), but it’s quite another to continue listening because you begin to love the host. This is exactly the case for White Wine Question Time and me- I know a lot of Pip, Stu and Chris’ previous work but wasn’t overly familiar with Kate Thornton, but she proves herself to be a welcoming, warming and delightful host. With WWQT, Kate asks her guests three questions, each accompanied with a glass of white wine and invites all answers to be as introspective, wandering, direct or humorous as is desired. A real comfort podcast!

THIS WEEKS MUST LISTEN:

SIMON MAYO’S BOOKS OF THE YEAR

Simon Mayo and Matt Williams are reunited from their Radio 2 show to talk all things literature. In this fantastic series, they are joined by novelists, historians and professors to discuss the authors’ newest works. This show actually reignited my love of reading and has led to my making time to speed through books- a pastime which, as a lot of people find, I simply don’t do as much as I used to. Or as much as I do on holiday. Guests include Lee Child, Sir Michael Parkinson, Kate Atkinson and Lynda La Plante.

Highlights include Tarantino, Heath Ledger and Paddy Considine and, of course, Chris manages to bring up The Thing. Again.

EVIL GENIUS – QUEEN VICTORIA

September has been a good month for myself and Russell Kane. Having spent the evening in his company at the Southampton Mayflower Theatre, I was delighted to find the return of Evil Genius, the show where figures from history are put under the magnifying glass to determine whether they were evil or a genius. Indeed, the episode which I listened to on the way back from my honeymoon was Queen Victoria, a character who suffered great tragedy during her reign. As ever, Russell chairs the discussion deftly, allowing his guests to run with an idea before carefully steering them back to a final decision.

THE SECRET LIVES OF BLACK WOMEN

Another new podcast to introduce for this week’s Book Of Joe! Charla Lauriston and Lauren Domino bring to the ears stories of what it means to be a black woman in the modern world. This may very well prove to fill the 2 Dope Queens hole in your life. Charla and Lauren are powerful women, who in their first episode explore the importance of their own self-realisation and self-worth. They describe previous working conditions which prove horrendous- phrases like “diversity hire” were commonplace and led to their leaving of their posts. They are joined to further explore being a black face in a white space with Bari A. Williams- a fantastic advocate for diversity, specifically in the technology industry. Incredible advice passed down from their elders is shared and evaluated towards the end, with emphasis on communication and family. A genuinely beautiful listen.

Listen for an absolutely bonkers argument erupt when it is suggested that sparkling water is more hydrating than still water and is exacerbated still when it is suggested that if anything, it would prove to hydrate less as the bubbles take up valuable space where water could be. Yeah. Odd, but brilliant.

An important voice in the gaming industry since she was 16, Keza MacDonald absolutely knows her onions when it comes to video games. In this brand spanking new series, Keza examines how her relationship to gaming has changed/is changing as her lifetime hobby intersects with her becoming a parent. Beginning with the mission statement of the podcast, the first show is introduced as not only an entertaining discussion between gamer parents, but also as a space for anyone experiencing difficulties or simply showing they are not alone in the great struggle for finding time to themselves. Keza is joined by voice acting royalty in the forms of Nolan North and Troy Baker, two of the most celebrated performers in the video games medium. THE QUEER MOVIE PODCAST

Rowan Alice and Jazza John present this fantastic movie podcast, critically analysing representations of LGBTQ+ in cinema. Their discussion of Oscar-winning Moonlight drew my attention to this show, as it’s one of my favourite films and I was instantly warmed to the hosts. Each month, one film is picked by the podcast’s audience from a shortlist of four from a different genre. That film is then analysed for its strengths and weaknesses in representing different genders and sexualities on-screen. DEATH BY 1000 CUTS

Recently a guest on Scroobius Pip’s Distraction Pieces, Tim Clare presents here a fantastic guide to all who wish to succeed with their creative writing. I had gotten gun-shy with creative writing, finding it far easier to write reviews and fact- based articles and such, so it was a delight to discover Tim’s Couch to 80k series. Comprising a writing exercise per day over the course of 8 weeks, the course begins with simple tasks- writing a list of invented character names, a list of objects they may carry with them, problems to be solved by a protagonist etc. all in the time constraint of ten minutes, in which Tim remains silent, then suddenly reappears, without fail making the listener jump! I’m currently in the third week of the course and have found massive improvements, not only in my ability to write continuously, but also my confidence in my own writing. A brilliant listen for writers everywhere!

Formerly known as The Nerdist Podcast, host Chris Hardwick interviews the great and powerful from all walks of entertainment. It’s possible, when people achieve the super level of fame of Brad Pitt, Beyoncé or even Cruise himself, it’s possible to think of them more as a concept rather than an actual person. Throw into that mix a reportedly bizarre belief system, it would be possible for Cruise to be completely alienated from the average joe. In this conversation, it’s Cruise’s stories about meeting Dustin Hoffman for the first time; driving around to Hollywood’s greatest actors’ houses at night before he became a superstar that brings him down to Earth.

THIS WEEKS MUST LISTEN:

BLOCKBUSTER

This is a sensational listen. Blockbuster is clearly a labour of love, telling the parallel stories of two plucky upstarts beginning what they hope to be illustrious careers in moviemaking, namely, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. Featuring a full cast performance, this six-part series follows Spielberg’s arduous journey to making Jaws and Lucas’ struggle with the creation of Star Wars. Perhaps the series’ greatest achievement is making the listener forget that this story ends with Lucas and Spielberg enjoying massive financial and cinematic success with their features, so engrossing are the stories of the filmmakers’ difficulties. Blockbuster also features incredible sound design, boasting scores, ambient noise, dialogue and sound effects throughout. An absolute triumph of a show!

ELLIS JAMES AND JOHN ROBINS – 5 LIVE

Fresh from their long-running podcast on Radio X, Elis and John have been brought in to “introduce a youth audience for BBC Radio 5Live.” This produces mixed results right from their very first show- a particular highlight is having Elis and John reading out negative and abusive tweets from unimpressed listeners. This is my first listening experience from this pair and while there are features and jokes brought across from their old show, they still manage to achieve inclusion from new listeners. Definitely a new regular listen for me!

MARVEL’S WOLVERINE: THE LONG NIGHT – EPISODE 1: A THOUSAND WAYS TO DIE IN ALASKA

Another fictional podcast this week, Wolverine has been in my To Be Listened pile for quite some time. Presented as primarily an investigation into a spree of crimes, we get to know our detectives and residents of Alaska long before we are introduced to the veteran X-Man. As before, with Blockbuster, The Long Night features a full cast production, with Richard Armitage voicing the great clawed one. The soundscape is second to none, enhancing the story and immersing the listener into the Alaskan cold (I actually shivered and one point, listening to the howling winds!). This show proves that comics can work as podcasts!

Featuring brilliant discussions of the latest entertainment releases, the team (which now features only one of the original staff members from the podcast’s birth) brilliantly rib each other while offering great insight into the latest games, films and TV shows. There’s also a weekly quiz and feedback features, so a true interactive experience! A great listen.

DEAR JOAN AND JERICHA – EP 1

Now official winners of Best Comedy Podcast at the British Podcast Awards, creators Julia Davis and Vicki Pepperdine take on the roles of Joan and Jericha, two very ‘experienced’ women who steer their listeners through all kinds of problems life throws at them. I feel that with this podcast, the less you know about it at the point you start listening, the better, but just know that it is absolutely hilarious and very often strays into hysterical problems of a sexual nature. The inaugural episode already proves they are deserved winners.

THE TIM FERRISS SHOW – #366 NEIL GAIMAN

Best known for his book The 4 Hour Workweek, in this interview podcast, Tim Ferriss deciphers the mental tools his guests use in order to achieve their success. In this special episode, Tim admits he has been trying to get an interview with fantasy authour Neil Gaiman for close to twenty years. Gaiman gives his idiosyncratic quiet, considered answers to questions about his writing method, working with Terry Pratchett and how his new TV series is fulfilling his friends’ dying wish.

BEND THE KNEE: A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE PODCAST

It seems, at present, necessary to give praise to a podcast dedicated to Game of Thrones. With the show in its final couple of weeks/episodes, I have spent the last few weeks gauging this show’s hosts’ reactions and predictions for Season 8 of Game Of Thrones. What we have with Bend The Knee are hosts who are experts on the fiction of George R. R. Martin’s Westeros, coupled with an equally fascinated community- who regularly contribute some of the show’s best content. This absolutely sated my obsession with Game of Thrones at times where I couldn’t watch the show, and offered up theories about how the story will conclude and differ from how the books are understood to be ending. Listen on Spotify

2 DOPE QUEENS – KARAOKE WITH MICHELLE OBAMA

Given that I hold Barack Obama’s appearance on Marc Maron’s podcast one of my favourite conversations ever, I felt it only fair that I give his First Lady a chance. As described in the New Testament section of Pod Bible Issue #002, 2 Dope Queens features hosts Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams, who are comedians and best friends. They offer an insight into lives that I have absolutely no insight to. Their conversation with Michelle Obama opens with a discussion of how important the planning of how the First Lady’s hair was going to look was. As a chunky, white man, hair is very low on my list of priorities on any given day, so it was genuinely fascinating to hear about how something which to me is trivial, was something of great import to a powerful and successful woman. The conversation turns to motherhood, miscarriage, Mrs. Obama’s recent book and how much of an icon she has become to people everywhere. I absolutely loved it. Listen on Acast

THINKING BIG WITH MAISIE WILLIAMS – EPISODE 1 LOYLE CARNER

It takes shrewd marketing and understanding of social media to understand the best time to launch a product. I think the best example of this goes to Maisie Williams with her new podcast Thinking Big. The inaugural episode was released the night of which, her character in Game of Thrones was absolutely guaranteed to be the most-discussed topic on the internet for fans of the show, due to her actions in the episode The Long Night. At the time of writing, the show only has two episodes. The first was with musician Loyle Carner, who goes in depth about the release of his latest album. Carner proves to be an engaging guest and Williams a wonderful interviewer- angling her questions very much from an artistic point of view. I look forward to more episodes from her and the people she chooses to converse with. Listen on Spotify

RICKY GERVAIS IS DEEPLY SIRIUS

A founding father of podcasts, Ricky Gervais broke world records with his mid-2000s shows with Stephen Merchant and made a household name of Karl Pilkington. Here, Ricky returns to the format he helped to create with Deadly Sirius. A truncated form of his radio show broadcasting on Sirius XM, Ricky sees guests through conversations on both the deeply philosophical and scientific, to the scatological and hilarious. Guests include Gervais’ regular work partners Robin Ince, Diane Morgan, Brett Goldstein and also featuring are James Acaster, David Baddiel and Richard Dawkins. If you’re a fan of Ricky’s, its more of the same brilliant stuff- and of course featuring THAT laugh! The episodes which have been made available as podcasts are ‘Best Ofs,’ chopped down versions of the whole episodes, which have been released as audiobooks on iTunes. Listen on Acast

THIS AMERICAN LIFE – #489 – NO COINCIDENCE, NO STORY!

This American Life is one of the most-listened-to and most varied podcasts in existence. The show examines a different subject each episode and it seems that there is nothing not worth looking into for this team. From car sales to political intrigue and scandal, the hosts manage to achieve the ideal for documentaries- introduce to the subject a topic of which they know nothing and then make them care about it. This particular episode is one that will leave you open-mouthed, as Sarah Koenig asks listeners’ for their best stories of strangest coincidences. From the fairly innocuous, to the wonderfully romantic, to the tense and at one point, scary, all of these stories are beautiful examples of the weird quirks of the universe. Listen on Acast

EVIL GENIUS w/ RUSSELL KANE – ROALD DAHL

This episode may ruin a part of your childhood. With Evil Genius, Russell Kane presents an individual to a panel of judges and asks them to decide whether society should look back on these people as either Good or Evil. The more interesting cases tend to be, strangely, the discussion around peope where the conclusion seems fairly straightforward- examples include Mahatma Ghandi and Mother Theresea. Where these two individuals tend to be thought of as people who enacted change upon the world for the good, their private lives reveal themselves to be somewhat murkier. With Roald Dahl, at the outset, it seems pretty one-sided for an author who created such magical characters and stories for the world, but further exploration into his family life reflects the dark undertones to a lot of his children’s stories. Bubbling under the surface are true horrors. Listen on Acast

THE ADAM BUXTON PODCAST

This week sees the highly anticipated return of The Adam Buxton Podcast- one of the finest podcasts around! Following the massive success of his BBC 6 Music radio show, hosted with long-term work wife, Joe Cornish, Adam has recorded almost 100 conversations with some of the most engaging entertainers, writers, podcasters, actors and comedians working in those respective industries today. Interspersed with Adam’s own homemade jingles, Dr. Buckles truly gets the best out of his guests and the goodwill towards him clearly shines through. Particular highlights include his and Louis Theroux’s karaoke session to Sia and Baccarat along with the annual Christmas updates from Cornish’s Tom Cruise Doodle story. To borrow a question from Brett Goldstein, if aliens landed and asked, “What is a podcast?” this is the one to show them. Listen on Acast

INSANE IN THE MEN BRAIN PODCAST – MICHAEL SMILEY

Like our host, Rich Wilson, I first became aware of the actor Michael Smiley through his performance as Tyres in the celebrated sitcom, Spaced. Since then he has become one of my favourite actors and I jumped at the opportunity to hear him discussing mental health. Rich Wilson is clearly doing great work in encouraging conversations between men regarding their mental health and is very open and engaging with his guests. It’s fantastic to hear about the trials that both chaps faced with becoming fathers at an early age and there is clearly a love and respect shared between them. This episode really brightened up a fairly rubbish day for me, I urge everyone to give it a listen. Listen on Acast

GOSSIPMONGERS – EPISODE 2: ALISTAIR GREEN

This will have you in fits of laughter. Each episode, the three hosts read through the gossip their followers send in from their local area and school days. They struggle through reading the obscure, the quirky and the downright disgusting rumours from people’s every day lives. Episode 2 includes a particularly brilliant story about an unfortunate chap who, after losing his wife, takes up with a ‘unique’ new partner- to the surprise of his local community. In between each piece of gossip, we are treated to trancy music which, to my ears, is exactly what it would sound like were David Lynch to make music. Hysterical and disturbing in equal measure, I can’t wait to listen to more of these. Listen on Acast

REGULAR FEATURES

Regular Features was the first podcast that ever had me curled up in a shaking ball of tears of laughter. Each week, the hosts (Gav, Log, Steve, Matt and Joe) come up with a new comedy feature in the search for one worth repeating. These features take the form of scripts, sketches, monologues, true stories, quizzes and (my personal favourite) Gav winding up strangers on the internet. This podcast absolutely comes with an explicit content warning- conversations frequently delve into squelchy, scatological discourse. Given that the chaps all either are/have been in the video games industry, so some knowledge of the geeky side of the internet is advisable, but by no means is a necessity. Listen on Acast

Recently nominated for ‘Best Entertainment’ Podcast at the British Podcast Awards, This Paranormal Life follows “Professional” Paranormal Investigators, Rory Powers and Kit Grier, as they delve into the world’s most pressing mysteries, conspiracies and unexplained phenomenon. This show probably features the best sound engineering I’ve ever heard in my 10+ years of podcast listening, it’s clear that a huge amount of effort and love goes into the editing. In this two-part special, Rory attempts to mimic the format of ‘Serial,’ with his investigation into the disappearance of a logging worker in Arizona. Listen on Acast

DESERT ISLAND DISCS – MARTIN FREEMAN

I think we all love Martin Freeman. In this musical chat with Lauren Laverne, Martin takes us through his early days of touring with Youth Theatre, up to the unexpected love for The Office, all the way to solving crimes with one Sherlock Holmes. The conversation is, of course, interspersed with Freeman’s choicest songs and pieces. A classic show, Desert Island Discs has remained something I’ve dipped in and out of over the years and has featured actors, musicians, politicans and comedians- it’s a must listen for anyone who enjoys spoken entertainment. Listen on Acast

 ABROAD IN JAPAN

This week’s recommendation is inspired by my lifelong desire to visit the Land of the Rising Sun. I subscribed to this podcast when it first debuted last year and dip in and out where my pangs to visit the East fluctuate. Celebrated YouTuber, Chris Broad, discusses different parts of Japanese culture each week, with veteran podcast host and Absolute Radio presenter Pete Donaldson. Topics range from customs, traditions and etiquette; to Chris’ mammoth cycle across Japan and the sights he discovers along the way. Chris and Pete’s affability and chemistry shines through in their light-hearted discussions and they surely convince everyone that Japan is an absolute must-see destination. The podcast is a supplement to the also excellent Abroad in Japan YouTube channel, which features incredible editing, in-depth features and high-quality photography. An absolute must listen to lovers of travel and, of course, all things Japanese.

FILMS TO BE BURIED WITH – #34 RUSSIAN DOLL’S LESLYE HEADLAND

Brett doesn’t know this, but he has accompanied me to every Thursday night weekly trip to Tesco ever since he launched his amazing podcast. In Episode 33, (Chris Hewitt) Brett set us the homework of watching brand new Netflix show Russian Doll before listening to his discussion with one of the shows’ creators Leslye Headland and it is pretty much essential that you do so before listening to this. What follows is an in-depth critique of the show as a whole before discussing its finer points and nuances and I adored it. Leslye is one of the most intelligent people I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing discussing cinema and genuinely introduced me to concepts that hadn’t ever entered my psyche before (in much the same way that Dane Baptiste had way back in episode 23). This conversation is a shining example of why podcasts must exist. Listen on Spotify

THE EVOLUTION OF HORROR – FOLK PT 16 – GREEN ROOM & GET OUT

This one is quite niche. I’ve been in love with horror films since I was a teenager and devour the latest scary releases. With each series, host Mike Muncer looks back on key texts within different sub-genres of horror; his second series featuring Folk Horror. Discussion topics include classics such as The Wicker Man, but in this conversation with fellow film critic (and other half!) Rhianna Dillon, they dissect (appropriate verb) the recent hits Green Room and Get Out. As with Films To Be Buried With, the joy for me is hearing the minutiae of each texts’ key successes, with particular attention to the script of Get Out, which they discover holds more than one meaning with every single line. Green Room is held under the microscope within the social context of the rise of the Far Right and the approach of Trump’s America. Films truly give back to us what we bring to them.
