This week marks the 35th anniversary of Die Hard – the most impactful action movie ever made! At least that’s according to Hollywood screenwriter Philip Gawthorne, the creator and host of the hit film podcast Die Hard on a Blank, which explores the influence of Die Hard on action cinema, one action movie at a time.

In each episode, Philip and his co-host Liam Billingham analyse a different action film that has some kind of connection to Die Hard – be it through premise, personnel or otherwise. Some of these movies involve classic ‘Die Hard on a blank’ scenarios, like the boarding-school based Toy Soldiers, the U.S. Battleship-based Under Siege and plane-based Passenger 57. But others have more subtle and surprising connections to the original 1988 classic, such as Road House, Ricochet and Harrison Ford thriller The Fugitive.

An LA-based podcast, Die Hard on a Blank is produced by Sugar23 and Michael Sugar (the Oscar-winning producer of 2016’s Spotlight) and it’s already attracting some stellar guests. We talked to Philip when the podcast first launched, but now that the show is really gathering steam, we asked him to reflect on his favourite episodes so far…

Die Hard (Episode 1A and 1B)

We kicked off the show with a two-part double-header on the daddy of the genre: Die Hard. First, we talked through the entire movie scene by scene, discussing moments, creative choices and characters that we love. In the second part we talked about the origins of the film, which was based on a terrific novel called Nothing Lasts Forever and was influenced by earlier movies such as The Taking of Pelham 123, The Towering Inferno and First Blood. I’d only met Liam twice before recording the episode (and never in person) but we just clicked instantly, so I love this ep on a personal level because it also captured the beginning of our friendship.

Licence to Kill (Episode 3)

It’s Die Hard in a Bond movie! I took my research for this episode very seriously because I know how much James Bond means to people, especially in the UK, where 007 is arguably our greatest pop-cultural export. The links to Die Hard might not be immediately obvious, but they are there, and it was also a really fun experience for me and Liam to unpack this film, and its context within the wider Bond canon, from our differing cultural perspectives (I’m British, Liam’s American). Liam grew up on Sean Connery, whereas I was weaned on Roger Moore, but we both love what Timothy Dalton did with the role. Although it’s not necessarily “the best”, this is actually my favourite Bond movie!

The Last Boy Scout (Episode 9)

It’s Die Hard in an LA noir! This is one of the episodes I’m most proud of, and it was also the most vulnerable for me, because the director of the film – the late, great Tony Scott – is one of my biggest heroes, so I got a little emotional talking about him. It led to a wide-ranging, deep dive discussion that encompassed film noir, American distraction and the dark history of Los Angeles. We also talked about (gridiron) football, as I’m obsessed with the NFL, so much so that Kyle Brandt (the effervescent host of ‘Good Morning Football’ on the NFL Network) will be guesting on the pod for our Hard Target episode (out August 2nd). In my first interview with you guys, I said that Kyle would be my dream guest for the show, so to get him was an incredible coup!

Hard Boiled (Episode 10)

It’s Die Hard in a hospital! We were so excited to talk about this incredible movie that we went into a state of hyperactive mania! I absolutely love John Woo and Chow Yun-fat and I just cannot get over how astonishing this movie is to watch. For me, Hard Boiled is like this magnificent, exotic, phantasmagoric vision that was beamed to us from another world – it’s exuberant action cinema at its absolute zenith. By this point we were pretty dialed in to our format, that also includes the ‘Die Hard Oscars’ (with categories such as The Dick Thornberg award for ‘Dick of the Movie’) and our ‘Double Jeopardy’ trivia quiz. We were just having a blast.

Cliffhanger (Episode 14)

It’s Die Hard on a mountain! This was a particularly cool episode as we were joined by Jamelle Bouie, a brilliant and highly influential opinion writer for The New York Times. Jamelle also co-hosts a fantastic podcast called Unclear and Present Danger, where he analyses the action movies of the 1990s through a political lens, and he’s just an incredibly smart, yet completely unpretentious, person. Cliffhanger is one of the more obvious ‘Die Hard on blank’ films, in that it directly replicates the classic ‘Die Hard formula’ (i.e. ‘bad guys take over a blank and it’s up to one person to fight back’) in a different setting, but that setting is a really interesting and unusual one here. We also talked about Sylvester Stallone, Michael Rooker, John Lithgow and the director Renny Harlin, whose background in horror may have influenced this surprisingly gory movie!

In our Divine 5 feature, we ask podcast hosts to share five of their favourite podcast episodes and tell us why they’re worth checking out for new listeners. For Mental Health Awareness Week, Kirsty Eaton shares with us the episodes of the Reach Out for Mental Health podcast that mean the most to her…

I set up Reach Out for Mental Health in 2016 after losing a colleague, Steve, to suicide, which turned my world upside down. After working in health and social care for over 10 years I’d supported adults struggling with suicidal thoughts and experienced the frustrations daily of trying to get someone support when they need it. The obvious output for my grief was to create a service which Steve needed and may have kept him alive.

The Reach Out for Mental Health podcast, co-hosted by myself and Stu Whiffen, is a place to get up close and personal with those who have experienced their own struggles with suicidal thoughts or have sadly lost someone to suicide. It’s a space for people to feel vulnerable and yet safe enough to share some of the darkest times of their lives, sharing with others the stories behind what led them to feel suicidal and most importantly – how they fought their way out. It’s a podcast full of courage, despair, pain… and hope.

#1 Mark Phillips

Mark is one of my oldest and dearest friends. Oddly enough, he was Stu’s friend before he was mine, back when they were both knee-high to a grasshopper. He moved to Australia over a decade ago and in 2021 Mark’s world fell apart. Mark tells a story of gambling addiction, debt and feeling so trapped he believed there was only one way out. I was so touched by his willingness to ‘go public’ about his situation, understandably something he has kept quite very private up until the podcast. Mark now has his own incredible podcast called Between the Bars talking all things music.

#11 Tom Davies- Proper Mental Podcast

The podcast with Tom will always remain close to my heart, mainly because of the number of parallels I could drew between his experiences of shitty mental health and my own. Yet, this is the magic of our podcast- being able to sit there, listen to someone else pour their heart out about something so devastating for them, all the while sitting there screaming at the laptop “Oh My God, I know exactly what you mean!!!” It’s beyond nourishing. It’s the start of recovery for some. Definitely was for me. Check out more of what Tom has to say in his podcast, Proper Mental Podcast.

#20 Bea Dux

Talking to Bea was like those weird yet delightfully unexpected situations you find yourself in at parties, networking events or other social functions; you’re chatting over a vol-au-vent, trying hard not to fling pastry in their eye and after 5 minutes you feel so comfortable and connected with this person you want to invite them to your wedding! Bea was unashamedly open and raw about her diagnosis, what impact it has on her daily life and those around her. It was a complete reset from all conversations I’ve had with others over the years who live with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder. She doesn’t sugar coat anything, she lays it on the line. No hiding in the loos on this podcast.

#21 Billy Lunn – The Subways

Having been a Subways fan for nearly 20 years you can imagine my delight at interviewing the man himself, Billy Lunn. We published the video for this interview on our socials and you can just see me beaming throughout the entire thing! As with everyone who comes on our podcasts, his vulnerability and candour was utterly refreshing, giving us an insight into the lifestyle of being a touring musician, the excitement and pitfalls of living in the world of rock and roll including alcoholism. Billy shares with us his struggles with suicidal thoughts, living with Borderline Personality Disorder and the relief and acceptance which accompanied his diagnosis.

#3 Darren Smith of Andy’s Man Club

A theme that all of our podcast episodes share is that of feeling hopeless, trapped and overwhelmed – followed by hope, strength and the reclamation of their life. This one with Darren Smith does just that and then some. The reasons for people feeling this way aren’t usually because of psychotic illness or some dramatic and devastating event in their lives. It’s usually down to everyday shit being thrown in their path, which just builds and builds and builds. Like debt, relationship breakdown, problems with getting access to their kids, gambling, drinking too much booze. The whole reason I wanted to start a podcast was to show listeners that although the struggle feels unsurmountable at times- you CAN GET THROUGH IT. I love hearing from people who have been in the depths of depression, feeling like there is no way out… and then out of nowhere a light appears, a thought pulls them from the edge and the recovery starts. Darren talks about his battle with suicidal thoughts, how an online men’s mental health group saved him and how he is paying it forward. Hope in abundance.

In our semi-regular Divine 5 columns we ask podcast hosts to share five of their favourite podcast episodes and tell us why they’re worth checking out for new listeners.

Last time we spoke to Dave and Rich from Unequal Sequel, they told us all about their film podcast that focuses on the sequels to films. Well now it’s time for the sequel to that interview! For part two, we asked them to tell us where new listeners should start, and which episodes stick in their minds…

S01 E01 – Helen O’Hara

It seems a bit convenient that our first ever episode is first on this list, but Helen was such a brilliant guest that we really couldn’t have chosen anyone else. We have both been big fans of Helen’s writing for a long time and we were both blown away when she agreed to be the first guest on our new podcast. Helen’s answers to our daft questions about movie sequels were perfect and she perfectly balances an incredible insight and knowledge of film with wit and charm that instantly puts you at ease. Also we got to talk about Indiana Jones, which is always a winner!

S02 E01 – Nick Helm

We are such big fans of Nick that we were both really nervous before we recorded this episode, but the nerves soon went away as Nick had us laughing from for first minute. One of the things that we love about this podcast is when we get to watch movies that we haven’t seen before and Nick really delivered some crackers. We won’t spoil it but his pick for worst sequel is one of the worst movies we have ever seen! Normally we try and keep our episodes to around an hour, but this episode is a lot longer as there was just too much great stuff for us to cut any out and as Nick says were now BEST friends!

Ghostbusters Afterlife Extra Episode with Seann Walsh

We recorded with Seann in our second episode and we both really liked him straight away. It’s a great episode, but we both agreed that our chat about Ghotsbusters: Afterlife for an extra episode in series 2 was our favourite. As well as our interview episodes we also record an ‘Extra’ episode every week where we review recent sequels or talk about some sequel related nonsense. This was a special one as its the first time we had invited a guest on an extra episode. Seann is such a huge Ghostbusters fan that we knew we had to get his thoughts about the new movie. Seann is passionate, funny and engaging. This is probably the best ‘Extra’ episode we have done, maybe because it’s not just us two!

S01 E05 – Lewis Arnold

Both of us studied film at university and Lewis was in the year below, but it was clear from the first time we met him that he was going to be something special. Lewis has directed loads of award winning TV shows including Broadchurch, Humans, Misfits, Des and mostly recently Time with Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. Lewis’ film knowledge is truly encyclopaedic and he had so many honourable mentions that this turned into an extra long episode, but it’s all great stuff. It was such a good chat that we also had to release an extra ‘Extra’ episode of Lewis talking about directing Time and his other projects.

Our Best, Worst and Dream James Bond Extra Episode

I think that this is the ‘Extra’ episode that we enjoyed the most, which is weird because neither of us are huge Bond fans. We decided to ask ourselves the questions we ask our guests and came up with our Best, Worst and Dream Bond movies. It’s a great episode if you like Bond or not and has a twist because Rich’s dream Bond sequel isn’t really a sequel and doesn’t have Bond in it, but you’ll have to listen to the episode to find out how that works.

But before we open the Log Books for the last time, we asked the team to reflect on their top 5 episodes from the past two years. If you haven’t yet listened, these are a great place to start. And if you’re already a fan, these episodes will be sure to get you returning to the back-catalogue…

S2 Ep 1 – Please Be Gentle

All: In our second season we covered the years from 1983 to 1991, which included the memories of the early years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic as it has never been told before. Hearing from those who nursed, loved and supported those diagnosed with HIV, as well as the volunteers who spoke to thousands of people who were terrified of this very new virus. We all were incredibly touched and impacted emotionally by what we read and heard, such an important time in our shared LGBTQI+ history that has to be shared.

S1 Ep 3 – Let’s Not Shy Away From Sex

Adam: The pages of the log books at Switchboard are filled with endless questions about what we can do with our bodies as queer people — so this episode was a real pleasure to make! Lots of laughs and plenty of serious business too, thanks to how non-inclusive sex education has been in the past.

S2 Ep 6 – Right On Sister

Shivani: This episode allowed us to look at the nuance of religious and LGBTQI+ life, an area that is too often dismissed and overlooked. This episode has a delicate balance of light and shade in the stories told – with moments that repeatedly made me laugh and break my heart over and over in a trademark The Log Books way.

S2 Ep 11 – Would Like to Stay

Tash: So many people reached out to Switchboard for advice on how to live, love and work in the UK throughout the 80s and 90s but what struck me about this episode is how current these issues are still today decades later. With conversations around borders, cultures and LGBTQI+ identity, this episode hears from a lesbian who helped a gay immigrant to stay in the UK and a gay refugee who recently fled Syria – pushing us to reflect on the LGBTQI+ rights globally that we still have to fight for today.

S3 Ep 1 – Multiple paradox net files

All: The first episode in final season telling untold stories from Britain’s queer history exploring the day-to-day impact on LGBTQI+ people made by shifts in technology and attitudes from 1992 to 2003. This first episode explore the internet, its impact on our communities and how it has evolved throughout the years. With the rest of Season 3 exploring stories from lesbians starting queer families in the 90s with sperm donors, kinky club nights such as Sadie Masie, the groundbreaking legal fight to equalise the age of sexual consent for men having sex with men and stories from transgender teenagers who reached out for help from Switchboard.

I Am A Runner by Amanda PlompI am a runner
Wow, I didn’t realise how hard it is to look back over your work and pick your Divine 5! But this narrative episode holds a special place in my heart. It was the first story written specifically for a podcast format. Amanda’s passion for running eclipses any concerns she might have around heading into the backcountry with epilepsy. Listen to this for a great story that teaches just a little bit about epilepsy. The music by Kev Rowe was such a perfect match to the story as well. Listen now on Acast >>

Ep 10 Adventurers Talk Epilepsy

Adventurers Talk Epilepsy
This episode is a great place to start for both people who don’t know about epilepsy, and for people who do. Most of the chats on Seize Your Adventure are with people living with epilepsy, and we learn about how they do adventure sports with the condition. This episode flipped it around and I talked to people who work in the outdoor sector and asked what they knew about the condition. It was a great way to correct a few epilepsy myths, and reassure people with epilepsy that they can safely access the outdoors, and will be welcomed. Listen now on Acast >>

I have spoken to so many interesting people with epilepsy about their passion for adventure sports: runners, hikers, surfers, climbers, triathletes and extreme adventurers. I wish I could pick all of their episodes! But if I can only pick one, I think it’s fair to pick my very first chat. Jade is based in Texas, so it was about 7am for her when we were recording. This is a pretty in-depth conversation for that time of the morning, about mental struggles due to epilepsy, but also the fun sports and challenges Jade has done over the years. So memorable and such a good sign of what was to come… Listen now on Acast >>

Outdoor Mindset cover art

The Outdoor Mindset
The episode I am most proud of is The Outdoor Mindset. It was a big story to tell – not just about the organisation Outdoor Mindset, but also sharing some information about neurological conditions, and talking about my own trip to Colorado. I interviewed several different people in many different locations, made some on-site recordings, did a lot of research and scripting. It all took much longer than I thought it would! But I hope the end result is entertaining, informative and an easy listen. Listen now Acast>>

Can i do adventure sports with epilepsy

Can I Do Adventure Sports with Epilepsy?
Spoiler – the short answer is yes! But this episode is definitely worth a listen for anyone who is interested in adventure sports, what epilepsy is, how to adapt activities and assess risks. This gets to the essence of the Seize Your Adventure podcast, so if there is one podcast about epilepsy you listen to today – this is the episode to head to. Listen now on Acast>>

Episode 001 Pod bible

#001 • No Such Thing As A Fish / White Wine Question Time / Birthday Girls House Party

One, two, skip a few… That’s how everyone goes through back-catalogues, right? If you are brand new to Pod Bible, I have to point you to the inaugural episode of the podcast. It dives straight in the deep end with No Such Thing As A Fish (pun fully intended). Listen to Adam and Stu chatting to Dan Schreiber about the massively successful show, as well as some great recommendations from Kate Thornton from White Wine Question Time. Plus, there’s far too much fun being had by the team from Birthday Girls House Party! Listen here >>

Episode 050 Pod bible

#050 • Distraction Pieces / Off The Beat & Track / Hardest Part Of The Ring

What’s one of the best things about applying for jobs in the podcast world? You can get to know your potential colleagues before you even send your CV! When Pod Bible Podcast turned 50 episodes young, the Pod Bible originators celebrated with chats from Pip about his Distraction Pieces Podcast, as well as a few recommendations from Stu and Ad. It’s a great chat, and a must listen if you want to feel like a true Pod Bible disciple. Listen here >>

Episode 039 Pod bible podcast back-catalogue

#039 • Have You Heard George’s Podcast / Private Parts / The Big Travel Podcast

Have you heard the Have You Heard George’s Podcast podcast? If the answer is ‘yes’, you should definitely have a listen to this episode. And I don’t just say that because I really wanted to write that sentence to confuse you. Adam’s conversation with George the Poet was one of the first ones recorded during the first COVID lockdown in March 2020. It was really interesting to hear how the lockdown isolation mirrored George’s creative process. Listen here >>

Episode 070 Pod bible podcast back-catalogue

#072 • Rule Not The Exception • The Log Books • Self Care Club

Pod Bible, both magazine and podcast, are here to give you a chance to hear from your favourite podcasters while also introducing you to people and podcasts you may not be aware of yet. This recent episode did that for me perfectly. It prompted me to finally listen to The Log Books, which had been in my queue since its British Podcast Awards success. AND then after listening to The Log Books, and loving it, I immediately subscribed to Tash’s recommendations. Listen here >>

Bonus Episode with Jordan Rizzieri and Scroobius Pip Pod bible podcast

Bonus Episode: A Message From Pod Bible

This episode is very different to the rest of the podcast back-catalogue, but it is also one of the most important. Following the death of George Floyd and subsequent centring of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, the team at Pod Bible contemplated their role and responsibility to help bring change. Pod Bible Founder, Scroobius Pip, and my predecessor, Jordan Rizzieri, had a conversation about the Pod Bible Pledge, and the importance of reaching out to underrepresented communities to spotlight their work. It’s a pledge I fully agree with. Listen here >>

The Pod Bible Podcast is the podcast podcast where podcasters talk to podcasters about podcasts and podcasting. Does it get anymore meta? The Pod Bible Podcast back-catalogue is available here on the website, on Acast, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and all good podcast outlets!

It takes a certain type of person to work in showbiz, and quite often they can be spotted at a young age, getting up on stage, standing in the limelight and shouting “Daddy, look at me!”. The Daddy Look At Me podcast is crammed full of these people. Each episode, famous comedy guests share their stories of childhood tantrums, traumas and blatant exhibitionism on the road to fame. Now in its fourth series, we asked hosts ‘Daddy’ Rosie and ‘Baby’ Helen to tell us pick their favourite 5 episodes for new listeners to dive into.

Rosie JOnes and Helen Bauer from Daddy Look at Me Podcast

‘Daddy’ Rosie Jones and ‘Baby’ Helen Bauer, hosts of the Daddy Look at Me Podcast

Rosie and Helen’s Divine 5:

Romesh Ranganathan (Series 3, Episode 1)

Series three got off to an absolute corker when we chatted to star of, er, EVERYTHING, Romesh Ranganathan. We love this episode, and we hope you do too. It’s very jam-sandwich heavy and Rom tells us what it was like growing up as a chubby baby boy in Crawley.

Listen to this episode now on Acast, Spotify or Apple podcasts

Jayde Adams (Series 3, Episode 3)

Jayde is one of our HEROES in comedy, and this episode from series three was such good fun. We chat about roller discoes and being a big show-off in Bristol. We love Jayde so much and you will too!

Listen to this episode on Acast, Spotify and Apple.

Ed Gamble (Series 1 Episode 3)

Ed was one of our first ever guests on the podcast and the boy did not disappoint. We loved chatting to him about what it was like to be a moody rocker, and how he became the fresh-faced comedy lad we know and love today.

Listen to this episode on Acast, Spotify or Apple podcasts.

Maisie Adam (Series 1 Episode 6)

This is also a throwback to our first season, when we interviewed one of our best friends in comedy, Mock The Week star Maisie Adam. She tells us about her less-than-successful attempt to pick up boys through the medium of dance, and her starring role in the school nativity as…the wise man’s wife.

Listen to the episode on Acast, Spotify or Apple podcasts.

Rachel Parris and Marcus Brigstocke (Series 4, Episode 1)

Married sweethearts Rachel and Marcus joined us for the first episode of season four, our latest season, and taught us that opposites DO attract. While little Rachel was learning the piano and being an all-round star student, Marcus was leading a team of little comrades across a very busy dual carriageway, and setting fire to goalposts. This is a blazing hot episode!

Now in its second season, Rule Not The Exception is the inclusive podcast with exclusive guests. Hosts, Sagar Radia and Amrita Acharia talk through a collection of experiences and views from friends and peers in the creative arts and beyond. We asked them to take us through their five favourite episodes.

Mandip Gill (Series 1,  Episode 2)

Mandip just brings a natural energy to any room she’s in. She doesn’t take herself too seriously, and I’m sure she can bring a smile to anyone’s face! Having worked with her on The Good Karma Hospital we already had a short-hand with Mandip, but she was great at taking that to another level when we would go off on completely random tangents! I think what made this episode great was her candid honesty and genuine laughter. Sometimes questions in interviews can feel a little formulaic and answers are a little guarded, or “planned” and for our podcast we really try to find a way into the core of a person and a relatability, which this episode is a fantastic example of. “Being yourself” is a phrase that gets bandied around left right and centre these days, but we definitely feel you get a slice of Mandip as ‘herself’ and no one else in our chat together. Listen now.

Elliot Barnes-Worrell (Series 1, Episode 7)

Elliot is the real deal. He acts. He writes. He directs. And that’s only the stuff we do know! His love for stories and attention to detail in our conversation was absolutely captivating. Elliot is an incredibly passionate person and that shone through in our chat when he delved deep about some of his early struggles getting into the entertainment industry. I think this one stuck out for us because he laid it all out in the studio. He could have chosen to shut down certain topics but chose to share honest experiences, and saw it as a responsibility to say his part. It resulted in a raw, and in places painful, but incredibly powerful talk that resonated with a lot of people. Listen now.

Amrita Acharia by Sam Jackson

Amrita Acharia. Photo by Sam Jackson

Moyo Akande (Series 2 Episode 3)

Moyo is literally a force of nature and despite it being lockdown she’d been so busy with creating projects that we had to pin her down for an hour in the studio! By the time series 2 was mid-way through recording, the Black Lives Matter movement had dominated the headlines, and as a black woman in the creative industry, Moyo has no qualms about speaking out and pushing the conversation to change the lack of representation not just in front of and behind the cameras, but also in the education system. Moyo has a drive and a tenacity that is infectious and this chat really unveils her intelligent, business-like, and yet hands down creative to the core attitude to carving out the career she wants for herself. Listen now.

Naroop Jhooti (Amit & Naroop) (Series 2 Episode 8)

Naroop’s drive and determination to achieve his dreams is something he’s been passionate about since the first day I met him. Not one to mince his words or apologise for his hunger for more, this chat is a brilliant insight into a no-excuses mentality, and a taste of talent meeting opportunity in creating your own luck. With no format training as a photographer his get-up-and-go attitude made for a conversation that I feel people can be inspired by in any line of work. Listen now.

Russell Tovey (Series 2, Episode 10)

Russell Tovey is a staple name in the entertainment industry and was actually a huge reason we started this podcast! Russell has an innate confidence and belief that anything is possible. From acting, to writing, also podcast hosting, Russell has shown you can be a multi-hyphenate and enhance your skillset in various fields. This was a chat we were planning for a while, so we were lucky to get him days before the second lockdown began! I think in our conversation with Russell you can learn about his love of acting, some key roles he missed out on, and how networking can open doors for you without even realising! Subscribe now to listen when this episode is released.

The Architecture is Political Podcast is a platform for black and brown folks to discuss architecture and the built environment. Creator and host, Melissa R Daniel, shares personal stories and interviews about how policy, the architecture profession & industry as well as land use affects minority populations. Here are five stand out episodes for you to check out:

#BlackInArchitecture

Black In Architecture is a hashtag to amplify the voices of Black/Black British architectural professionals and students in the UK. It is also a black-led research initiative, proposing a new approach to achieving racial justice and ending structural racism and inequity in architecture. This is a start in defining the changes that we, as black people, want to demand in architecture and across the various dimensions of the profession – in education, practice, recruitment, professional memberships, regulatory bodies, media, events, to name a few. Listen now.

Muslim Women in Architecture

Muslim Women in Architecture (MWA) is a network and collective working to empower, inspire and celebrate Muslim women in the architecture and built environment industry. Tahin Khan, Zahra Mansoor and Rim Kalsoum formed MWA as it aims to provide a platform to not only support Muslim girls and women who want to pursue a career in the field, but to encourage an open discussion amongst those within the profession and outside.

Conversation with Sarah Akigbogun

Sarah Akigbogun is a London-based architect, filmmaker and educator.  She is founding director at Studio Aki, Vice Chair of Women In Architecture, founder of the XXAOC Project, and a newly elected London member on RIBA Council.  In 2017 she directed the film She Draws : She Builds, which collates the voices of 15 female architects.  Sarah’s current film project, for which she has received support from Arts Council England,  tells the stories of Female Architects of Colour.  The film is part of the wider XXAOC research project which is intended as an online resource documenting female architects of colour past and present. Listen to this episode online at archispolly.online

Mental Floss Series: ArchiMoms/ArchiDads

The Mental Floss Series is a limited run series talking about the new normal life during the pandemic. Anta Miranda, AIA and Veronica Elizalde-Molina are both archimoms; Richard Lyew, AIA  of Studio Lyew and Nikolas Hill are both archidads; all balancing architecture and parenting under one roof.  The “new norm” includes alternating work/parenting schedules, sharing a co-working space in the dining room, zoom chats, project delivery and explaining the importance of social distancing to a four year old.

MONEY. POWER. LAND. SOLIDARITY.

Getting political with G.P. Jacob (Jake Virden), host of Money Power Land Solidarity Podcast.  We discussed economic and urban development, politics, race, the working-class and the Upper Harbor Terminal Development, a project slated for North Minneapolis’ riverfront in the United States. Listen now.

Launched in 2014, when podcasting was largely still beneath the radar, FUBAR Radio became Britain’s first talk station aimed solely at 18 to 34s. Fast forward to 2020 and FUBAR is now the most prolific live podcaster out there. Listening figures have grown rapidly and now exceed a million each month (1.125 million live listens and on-demand downloads*)

In July alone FUBAR’s live podcasts were featured in 181 press articles, from the Daily Mail to Page Six, reaching 22 million people** and these articles regularly feature video excerpts from live shows.

FUBAR has already recorded over 7,000 hours of original programming with no commercial breaks, news, weather or travel bulletins and in 2021 they plan to expand their schedule to feature up to 20 genre-specific live podcasts. They’ve pioneered the use of social influencers as hosts, featuring shows covering celebrity news, politics, sexual health, music, comedy, LGBT+ and much more. Here are a few highlights to check out.

Ep 205 features Glee star Matthew Morrison, as he broke his silence over allegations made against his former co-star Lea Michele. Other episodes feature Jason Manford, Romesh Ranganathan, Samantha Morton, Matt Goss, Bob Saget and Johnny Vegas. Listen now>>

JAMES ACASTER
Ep 33 // Scroobius Pip
In the forerunner to the hit BBC TV series Sounds Random, FUBAR handed James his big break with this iconic 2016 live podcast series. Downloaded over half a million times, the question James asks is a simple one… “what embarrassing music choices lie in your personal library?”. This show sets guests’ devices to random shuffle to find out. With guests including Rick Edwards, Lembit Opik, Joel Dommett, Angela Barnes, Mike Wozniak and Rob Deering, few can stand the pressure of the random shuffle setting that reveals musical taste and a whole lot more about the guests themselves. Spotted a podcast you want to try from a Pod Bible recommendation, but not sure how to dive in? In our regular Divine 5 columns we ask podcast hosts to share five of their favourite podcast episodes and tell us why they’re worth checking out for new listeners…

Reel Feedback started when host Kevin Dawson hit forty and decided to embark on a new creative endeavour. He already had a love of the format but had never heard a podcast that spoke in detail with the unknown names from the TV, film and music industries. Editors, producers and make-up artists have a huge wealth of information, both technical and anecdotal, that anyone who loves sound and screen would love to hear. Here are five episodes we’d love you to check out…

Terry Ackland-Snow The Art Director invited Kevin to the infamous Pinewood Studios to talk in depth about his incredible body of work on movies like Tim Burton’s Batman, Labyrinth and Aliens. The anecdotes come thick and fast as Terry talks being on the hedonistic, wild set of Tommy, taking James Cameron to Heathrow Airport to find a suitable Alien smashing vehicle and casually mentioning working weekends with Kubrick on 2001 to help build the lead character’s space pod. Humble, modest and engaging, Terry was Kevin’s first guest to work on such beloved, well-known movies.

Adrian Bushby The Grammy-winning engineer/producer’s career has been colourful, and he talks about it in ear-pleasing, often profane (once he finds out he’s allowed to swear) detail. Hear how he convinced Dave Grohl he was the man for the job which then resulted in his first Grammy win, working in close quarters with Muse and any Spice Girls story that starts ‘I’m not sure if I should tell this one’ will always be good. (Whisper) he tells it.

Christine Blundell Another Oscar-winner, this time for her make-up artistry on Mike Lee’s Topsy-Turvy. As well as all of Mike’s other films, she has also put her skills to Wonder Woman and Sunshine. Recorded at another home location, Christine spoke with Kevin in her kitchen, which was also the spot where she aided Benedict Cumberbatch in breaking a clause in his BBC contract. Other tales include how as a new mum, she had to ignore Brad Pitt calling after her at the Oscars to pump breast milk and working on the wonderful Paddington set.

Jon McCoy Kevin’s personal favourite episode is his talk with the Concept Artist for Blade Runner 2049, Avengers: Age of Ultron and most of the recent Star Wars flicks. He talks about his path into the industry and his work on World War Z (that big zombie pile up the wall was his idea), Tom Cruise’s exo-suit in Edge of Tomorrow and, alongside director Gareth Edwards, his work in creating that Darth Vader scene in Rogue One. He then tops up Kevin’s envy even more by revealing that he watched it being filmed.

Geoff Pesche Abbey Road Studios has been a mecca to many for years, but what about the staff behind the scenes? Mastering Engineer Geoff has kept the seat warm in his room at the studio for over a decade, and has worked his final polish magic for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Black Sabbath and Ed Sheeran. An absolute pulls-no-punches guy, Kevin warmed to Geoff in seconds with his affable nature, hilarious, honest tales of his time working on classics like New Order’s Blue Monday and Pulp’s Different Class, before merrily revealing the new Coldplay album, title and all (at the time unannounced).

Reel Feedback is relaunching big with a new season on October 23rd, the new format will incorporate familiar names from the industries as well as those behind-the-scenes. Already lined up are American actor/comedian Ben Schwartz (Parks & Recreation, Sonic the Hedgehog), actor/ writer Andy Nyman (Ghost Stories, Judy, Derren Brown) and Grian Chatten, frontman with Irish rockers Fontaines D.C who recently got pipped to the UK No.1 album slot by Taylor Swift. On Seen Anything Good Lately? I ask guest creators to reveal their latest entertainment obsessions. Here are my current top five favourite episodes for you to enjoy!

Ep 5: Woody Allen Woody doesn’t own a computer or a mobile phone – he still types everything, from screenplays to emails (which he hands to a secretary), on the typewriter his Mum bought him for his 16th birthday. So getting an interview with him during lockdown was tough. Initially, I was granted an hour on the old-fashioned telephone landline, but the record quality on these is terrible and, honestly, he’s deaf in one ear, the ear to which he still insists on holding the receiver. He sounded depressed and resigned to never working again – he’d just lost a close friend in his jazz band to the virus. But I managed to persuade him to borrow his wife’s phone and I called him on FaceTime to get a lovely clean feed. It was the first time he’d ever used FaceTime (audio, not video, let’s not get ahead of ourselves) and I got another 30 mins with him and an interview he and I thoroughly enjoyed. He’s a maligned figure these days, of course, but I got a warm picture of him from this interview, how he practices his clarinet along to records, how he watches old movies in bed, his love for televised sports – I even got him to tell me a classic old joke. Listen here.

Ep 10: Venice Film Festival Special I can hardly believe this festival even took place. It feels like a distant dream now, and it felt unreal even while I was there for those first few days of a beautifully warm September, on the Lido over from mainland Venice. It was the only physical film festival to have taken place in the world since lockdown. I’ve been going to that festival for years and it’s always a great start to the awards season for movies. But this year promised a more intimate event even though nobody really reckoned it would actually happen, right up until journalists, TV crews, film makers, a few stars started arriving. And of course we were all in a great spot to see loads of new stuff to recommend, and to share excitedly what we’d all been watching over the summer. I think I managed to get all the garrulous joy of this highly unusual festival into my show with great guests (Stacy Martin, Jim Broadbent, Romola Garai and the great Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino) – it’s a bumper edition and I’m very proud of the work I put into it and how it sounded, to reflect an amazing few days of sunny ‘old normality’ that felt like a breath of fresh air rather than the last gasp of cinema I’d feared it might be. Listen here.

Ep 1: Emma Jane Unsworth What a great guest this author proved to be to start off the whole Seen Anything Good Lately? show. I knew Emma from a few panels we’d done together and knew how warm and witty she could be, but she really brought all of that to the podcast and had prepared beautifully, so her recommendations are top notch and immaculately varied, from buying expensive mustard, to hearing Meryl Streep read an audiobook of Nora Ephron, to the Brene Brown podcasts to the enduring appeal of Parks and Rec. I paired her with the bombshell Hollywood star Alexandra Daddario, who talked about all her favourite romcoms, from screwballs to Julia Roberts, and her 90s car driving jams, so it was a glamorous episode of smart, successful women with just the right energy and spread of recommendations to set the vibe – indeed the benchmark – for the whole series and suggesting to me that I might just have found a format and a podcast that works. Listen here.

Ep 6: Mira Nair and Mark Cousins Dedicating a show to female film makers always feels like you’re crowbarring an issue in, to look good, if you know what I mean? But this came about organically. Mira is certainly one of the best film makers in the world, and also happens to be a woman and it was wonderful to see her take on the huge task of adapting Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy, finding Mira back in India, dealing with families (it opens with a wedding, reminding us of her brilliant Monsoon Wedding, of course) and politics. She’s such a warm and intelligent person and gave me all of that in the interview, talking about the influences she used to make the six-part TV show, and just making the listener want to follow up on so many leads, which is of course the whole idea of the podcast. I still must catch up on the Indian police show she recommended, Paatal Lok. At the same time, the documentary maker Mark Cousins was unleashing his 14-hour doc about women directors, Women Make Film. It’s brilliant, of course, and shines a light on so many forgotten or deliberately overlooked film makers and Mark was on typically smart form, firing off the recommendations for books and music and marginalised women cineastes as well recounting what it was like recording voice overs with Jane Fonda and Tilda Swinton. It’s a very inspiring episode. Listen here.

Ep 3: David Thewlis and Ashley Henry I love this show because of the contrasts. Thewlis is one of my favourite actors and he’s got this dry wit talking about his great career, from getting drunk with Gary Oldman after winning at Cannes, to notching up 100 film appearances to starting out to catch up on every episode of Peep Show and revealing, exclusively, that he’d just finished writing his second novel – he was so excited that he started unveiling the plot. On the same show, I talked to south London jazz musician Ashley Henry, whose album Beautiful Vinyl Hunter I’ve loved and who talked me through some of the tracks (wish we could play more of the music on the podcast!) as he was preparing to play a concert that was streaming through the Royal Albert Hall website that night. He was a bit nervous, but full of fun, and talked about his love of art galleries and why Earth Wind and Fire meant so much to him growing up, plus he turned me on to some great stuff going on on IGTV featuring ‘battles’ between hip-hop turntable legends. I really have picked up some gems of recommendations from my guests over this first series of Seen Anything Good Lately? – I know you will, too. Listen here.

Spotted a podcast you want to try from a Pod Bible recommendation, but not sure how to dive in? We asked the gang behind Geek/Nerd Podcast to share five podcast episodes and why they’re important to check out for new listeners.

In the beginning there was The Geekly but we soon discovered that we had far too much to talk about and too many interests for one podcast. As a result geek/nerd podcasts was formed, allowing us to pursue what was important to us both individually and collectively.

We have included our current slate of shows and spin-offs below in the hope that we can entertain you with one, but maybe inform and challenge you with another. With content covering a range of topics from niche geek culture to social issues, geek/nerd podcasts offers a little something for everyone.

1. The Geekly #93 – Dark S3 | Doom Patrol 201-203 | The Twilight Zone 202
Join us as we put our years of academia and pop-culture enthusiasm into something fun and light but also insightful and informative. We analyse, review and discuss genre film and television and all the news surrounding it, with as much of an eye on character development and plot momentum as OHHHHMYYYGGOOODDDD moments.

Recent reviews include: Doom Patrol, What We Do in the Shadows, Dispatches From Elsewhere, Dark, The Twilight Zone, Snowpiercer.

2. Podcastaway #5 ft. Ross Chapman
Podcastaway is a monthly show where Jules’s guest picks the nine pieces of electronic media that would keep them sane in a genre fiction inspired isolation situation – which they also choose. Such situations have included a bunker in a post-apocalyptic landscape, the last man alive on a Mars colony base and the classic desert island situation.

Media can include films, tv shows and computer games and through the choices of the guest we get to learn about them and their journey. Episode 5 featured Ross from I Understood That Reference podcast with Episode 6, featuring one of the hosts of Bedknobs and Broomflicks podcast, dropping in the first week of August.

Contact Jules on Twitter if you would like to be a featured guest in 2021.

3. The Leks Files 001: getting the language right
Every month, The Leks Files will discuss one topic, either based on a question someone’s sent, or a subject they’d like to hear about, or maybe even just whatever Leks is obsessed with that month. Some episodes will be serious. Some will be goofy. Some will be somewhere in between. The hope and aim, though, is to inform, entertain, and not get too lecture-y about it.

Leks Drakos is a rogue academic and writer with a doctorate in English Literature and Creative Writing. He specialises primarily in monsters, monstrosity, and representations of the Other in contemporary society. You can follow him on Twitter or visit his website.

4. Vs #2 – Suicide Squad Harley Quinn Vs. B.O.P Harley Quinn
Vs pits two things against each other – what a shock – the caveat is that the two things must have at least a tenuous link.

In episode #1 Space Force and Upload went up against each other as both were created either fully or in part by Greg Daniels. In episode #2 the Harley Quinn of Suicide Squad and the Harley Quinn of Birds of Prey face off in 5 categories. Costume, Script, Fighting Prowess, Character Development and which sequel would we want to see based on where HQ’s story ended.

We discuss the impact of male and female directors, lethal and non lethal fighting methods, comics accurate portrayals compared with more actualised human beings and much more.

If you have any suggestions for future episodes feel free to submit them via DM on Twitter.

5. Q&A with Leks & Jules #2
Not it’s own podcast but we do infrequently answer audience questions. In Q&A #2 we answer six more questions including the most important question we have been asked thus far – If all the actors who ever played Batman were in a fight, as the Batman they played, with all special skills and tools and vehicles that Batman had. Who would win & why?

These sessions are fun and casual but really allow us to flex the geek muscles as we cite examples from all across the fandoms to help with our arguments.

If you have any pop culture, fandom, generally nerdy questions please submit them on Twitter.

The geek/nerd podcasts are available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Acast, and YouTube.

A Dog’s Life delivers highlights of my journey with my first Bull Terrier, Molly. Sharing what I’ve learnt from the people who have changed and are changing our understanding of dogs helps us understand why every dog is extraordinary. It’s a fab to be a part of Podpeople Productions, combining my broadcasting skills and study in holistic health as a nutrition and behaviour expert. A Dog’s Life is fuelling my lifelong passion; it’s a must listen for the dogcentric.

1) Episode One:  Rupert Sheldrake on the sixth sense and telepathy between dogs and their owners
Rupert Sheldrake is one of my heroes! He’s known for highlighting how telepathy exists between people, and between dogs and their owners. Having read Rupert’s book Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home 10 years ago, I wanted to share his work and how Rupert proved scientifically how dogs pick up on their owner’s intentions. For example when they’re returning home. Reading Rupert’s books vindicated me as I had experienced so many uncanny moments shared with my first Miniature Bull Terrier, Molly. Despite already sharing radio time with Rupert as a guest on BBC Radio London’s Barking Hour, which I’ve co-hosted for a decade, chatting to Rupert in his library was a bucket list moment!

2) Episode Three: Alternative Vet Lise Hansen on Homeopathy
I’m honoured that Lise Hansen is A Dog’s Life‘s ‘house Vet’. I am a great believer in holistic healthcare and when I was referred to a holistic vet 12 years ago, I never turned back!  We continue to embrace the huge toolbox that underpins the more natural, ‘drug free’ approach.  Lise highlights so clearly how homeopathy works and the science behind it, which lies in the laws of physics. As Lise says: “If you analyse the chemicals of a CD, it’s just plastic, you have no idea it’s Beethoven or The Beatles!”

3) Episode Four: Dr Claire Guest talking about dogs trained to sniff out COVID-19
Dogs have never been more in the news than during lockdown! Not least when the charity Medical Detection Dogs announced they were training six dogs to sniff out COVID-19.  I was honoured to be the first podcast to air this landmark news! I helped launch Medical Detection Dogs in 2008 when a scientific study published in The Lancet revealed that dogs could discriminate the odour of bladder cancer in human urine. This trial, which involved the charity’s first team of super sniffers, launched their work to prove diseases have an odour, which could help in the earlier detection of many cancers and more. By harnessing a dog’s superior olfaction, dogs can be trained to work with people suffering from conditions like diabetes, and alert to life threatening episodes to save lives. With over 300 million scent receptors in their nose, which compares to our five million, the potential of these super sniffers might just save us from ourselves!

4) Episode Nine: I chat to Police Dog Handler Dave Wardell about his dog known as Fabulous Finn
This episode highlights the extraordinary bond that exists between dogs and their owners – it epitomises the adage: ‘one man and his dog”. Dave speaks openly about the horror of being out on a routine ‘shift’ when the criminal they were pursuing stabbed K9 Finn leaving him a breath away from the death. We chat about guilt, which is an emotion that haunts many of us for different reasons. As the best-selling book Fabulous Finn highlights, he survived, but it could easily have been different. This criminal was charged with only a 5-month sentence for his savage actions. Subsequently ,Dave Wardell campaigned for a law called #FinnsLaw, which became legislation that protects all service animals. We also discuss his campaign for #FinnsLawPart2, which, if passed, will increase sentencing for all animal cruelty and neglect cases in line with the crime considering animals as sentient beings rather than simply as property.

5) Episode Ten: Toby Rose founder of The Palm Dog
Focussing on cultural dog-centricities, we talk about dogs in film with cinema journalist and founder of the only canine film awards, the Palm Dog, Toby Rose. Apart from a dog’s potential role in any plot, dogs are the familiar, they represent loyalty. A film is not a film without “man’s best friend”. We highlight the canine cinema legends like Rin Tin Tin, who earned more than Greta Garbo and saved Warner Bros from bankruptcy in the 1930’s. We also cover present canine stars like Uggie from The Artist, and merge film and literature in Copperfield where the dog Gyp reveals as much about Dickens as he does about his owner, Dora Spenlow, in the classic.
