Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard of yet. What’s Your Map? is a fortnightly podcast all about the world of maps and the stories behind them. We spoke to Oculi Mundi, the online collection of maps which publishes What’s Your Map?, to find out more about making of the podcast – including what to expect from series two, which launches today, 29th January!

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

Oculi-Mundi.com – the Eyes of the World – is the online home of a collection of early, mostly European, maps and related material. The objects in the collection range from the 13th to the 19th centuries and are world maps, celestial maps, atlases, globes, manuscripts, and books.

Our podcast is What’s Your Map? In it, the well-known historian and author Jerry Brotton meets people from around the world and from all sorts of fields, who love maps. They each bring Jerry a map to discuss that is particularly influential for them.

Jerry Brotton

Jerry Brotton, host of What’s Your Map?

How did the idea for What’s Your Map? come about?

We have always admired Jerry’s work, and very happily got to know him through the map ecosystem. He asked if we had ever thought of doing a map podcast; we had not, but it sounded like a brilliant idea! And we always love an adventure.

At Oculi Mundi, we are very intent on sharing the joy of maps and all the ideas and stories around them. Doing a podcast with Jerry is such an exciting way of building on that.

What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?

Talk Art.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

We couldn’t find any other podcast that actually talked to people about the maps they love, and their personal stories; all we could find were educational podcasts. Those are great – but in our view, maps are all about people: people who make maps, who use them, who get inspired by them. Maps are incredibly complex, contextual objects: there are so many stories to tell from them and about them.

We thought it would be fascinating and great fun to meet people and their maps – past and present. At Oculi Mundi we are a collection, not experts per se; and having someone as knowledgeable, experienced, and engaging as Jerry to host was a no-brainer. The podcast also allows us to present and explore maps that are beyond our specific collecting remit.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

Jerry has done a number of podcasts and radio programmes before. He made a series called Blood and Bronze for BBC Sounds on the Italian Renaissance artist Benvenuto Cellini, and listens to Waldy and Bendy’s Adventures in Art. Our producers, Whistledown Studio, are also very experienced. They produce shows like Our Broken Planet and The Reunion on BBC Radio 4.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

Have a great producer! And be prepared as far in advance as possible.

We put all the maps being discussed during What’s Your Map? online at Oculi Mundi, so that listeners can zoom in and follow along; so we make a full webpage for each guest. It also contains information on key themes or life experiences discussed by Jerry and the guest. It is important for us to take time to listen to the podcast episodes and think about what to feature online – what kinds of rabbit holes there are – and to ask questions. We also like to make sure that we have all the permissions in place to use digital images of maps that are outside the collection, as well as other images and content.

What can you tell us about series two of the podcast?

Series 2 is going to be great fun – we are very lucky and honoured to have an eclectic, wonderful mix of guests, talking about a terrific group of maps. Our first guest is Google Earth’s Ed Parsons; then we meet the journalist and writer Sathnam Sanghera, NASA scientist Dr Heidi Hamel, cartographic historian Matthew Edney, National Geographic photographer and documentary maker Michael Yamashita, and Margo Ngawa Neale, an expert and curator of Indigenous Australian cultures. Series 2 will launch on 29th January on all major platforms – and as always, the maps will be available at Oculi-Mundi.com/podcast.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

We have many dream guests! Among them would be cellist Yoyo Ma (who did a beautiful Silk Road project) and someone from the world of aviation. It would also be wonderful to speak with the artist Yinke Shonibare, and to find a specialist in mapping the flow of languages – or maybe the human brain. Other artists we would love to speak with are William Kentridge and Grayson Perry, who use maps in their work.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

From Series 1, the second episode featuring explorer Dwayne Fields. It shows how deep and how human the context of maps can be, and what maps don’t say as much as what they show. Dwayne is incredibly inspiring, with his polar expeditions re-writing history.

Do you have a favourite episode of the podcast, or one you are proudest of?

A favourite episode from Series 1 is the last one, with Jane Anson. Jane is a wine expert living in Bordeaux. Not only is she very engaging and knowledgeable about wine, but she demonstrates the fascinating history, uses, and sources of mapmaking in an industry and a region that are not obvious when you think about cartography.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

All the episode webpages and maps, along with information about Jerry and What’s Your Map? can be found at www.Oculi-Mundi.com/podcast.

Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard, but we think you should have. How To Be Fine is a weekly podcast which is half an advice show and half a cultural critique. Hosted by podcast besties Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg, they dissect the inner workings of the betterment industry – and offer up some advice along the way. We caught up with Kristen and Jolenta to learn more about their podcast…
Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

We’re Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg, and together we host How To Be Fine, a show about feeling better, not perfect. All this season, we’re tackling the sometimes thorny subject of friendship – from how to make friends and how to maintain long-distance friendships, to how to deal with conflict and even how to break up with BFFs. On some episodes we talk with experts. And in alternate episodes we serve as the show’s friendship guinea pigs, trying out the advice of our experts while recording ourselves.

What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?

It was probably This American Life for both of us!

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

Jolenta is a comedian who wanted to make her own content and tell her own stories so podcasting seemed like a natural fit. Meanwhile, Kristen got thrust into it 15+ years ago. She was working as culture producer at a public radio show and was asked to start hosting a podcast. A few years later, when they were each between podcasts, Jolenta invited Kristen to start hosting a show with her, and they’ve been doing it ever since.

Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg headshots

Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

We love any podcasts where the hosts have smart takes on what otherwise may seem like dumb subjects – reality TV, tabloid news, celebrity memoirs, and so on. We believe that those “dumb subjects” tell us a lot about what we value as a society. They’re also fun!

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

Definitely Dolly Parton. We adore everything about her! Her creativity, her entrepreneurial spirit, her altruism, her joy, her vulnerability, and her work ethic. She truly makes the world a better place.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

We don’t have to be perfect. In fact, our listeners tend to like us best when we’re being vulnerable, stumbling, and learning along with them.

Kristen and Jolenta

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

The first episode of our series on the Loneliness Epidemic is a great place to start.

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I’m Emma Lightbown, a fashion stylist, podcaster, and presenter. Off the Hanger is the fashion podcast where we chat to guests about their favourite wardrobe pieces and the amazing stories behind them. The guests are a fabulous, diverse mix of people from familiar faces to industry experts, fashion fanatics, and those with a unique sense of style.

Emma Lightbown

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

Sh**ged, Married, Annoyed – I love the very honest look at married life and the ridiculous / gross / hilarious stories that people send in. I learnt very quickly that it was one to listen to in the car not on public transport as you get some funny looks when you’re hysterically laughing at something no one else can hear!

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

Off the Hanger combines two of my favourite things – fashion and being nosey! I love chatting to the guests about the deeper meaning behind their clothes, why they choose what they wear, and how fashion impacts their everyday – it’s a way of showcasing that fashion is way more than just the superficial.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

I loved the format of Films To Be Buried With – so took inspiration from that when creating my own format. Although we wander off topic I really enjoy having the same set of questions that I cover with every guest. Fearne Cotton and Elizabeth Day are both incredibly inspirational. I love their interview style – it’s warm, friendly, and never invasive even though they cover some very personal topics with guests.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

Iris Apfel was always my dream guest up until her passing earlier this year. She had such a wonderful and unique sense of style – breaking down the stereotypes of what you can and can’t wear past a certain age. She was always truly authentic in her outfit choices and I would have loved to have known her answers to the Off the Hanger questions.

Emma Lightbown
Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

My chat with artist and print designer Jess Williams (“Top Fashion Tips From Artist & Print Designer Jess Williams”). We cover so much in this episode – trying to get over the diet culture hangover, Jess’s beautiful work, how she feels about wearing her own designs, and her childhood love of fancy dress. She shares her most embarrassing fashion moment, her most sentimental wardrobe piece, and the dream style treasure she’s lusting after.

We spoke to Matthew about podcasting, his dream guests and where to start with his podcast…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I am a broadcaster called Matthew Bannister. I have presented programmes on BBC Radios 1, 2, 4, 5Live, World Service and Local Radio, but in 2018 I finally designed my perfect job: the Folk on Foot podcast. In each episode I go walking and talking with a top UK or Irish folk musician in a landscape that has inspired them. And to make it even more beautiful, they sing and play on location. We’ve travelled the length and breadth of the country from Shetland and Orkney in the North to Faversham, Port Isaac and Dartmoor in the South and from Galway Bay in the West of Ireland to Robin Hood’s Bay and Spurn Point in the East of England. Our guests read like a Who’s Who of contemporary folk, ranging from Eliza Carthy, Seth Lakeman and the Unthanks to Johnny Flynn, Richard Thompson and Sandra Kerr, plus nature writers like Robert Macfarlane, Raynor Winn and Amy-Jane Beer.

Matthew Bannister

Folk on Foot host Matthew Bannister

What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?

The Guilty Feminist. It taught me so much!

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

Podcasting is a wonderful way to test out an idea and see if an audience likes it. You don’t need to get commissioned and you can make the episodes as long or as short as they need to be. I didn’t have to convince anyone else that Folk on Foot was a good idea before we launched. I just put it out there. Fortunately lots of other people loved it as much as I do and we now have a wonderful supportive community of Folk on Foot members.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

I love Catherine Carr’s Where Are You Going? – she just accosts complete strangers and finds out their fascinating hidden stories with such charm. During lockdown I listened to The Stubborn Light of Things by the novelist and nature writer Melissa Harrison, who took us for immersive and enlightening walks in the countryside when we were confined to our homes. I’m delighted to say we’ve just recorded a Folk on Foot episode with Melissa and the composer and musician Laura Cannell walking, talking and playing in rural Suffolk. (You will hear nightingales singing in the background as Laura plays her bass recorder.) I was delighted recently to be a guest on The Plodcast with Fergus Collins which is always a great listen. We had a wonderful walk around the remains of a Roman settlement at Silchester. Anyone who needs more inspiration to get out and engage with the natural world should check out Liv Bolton’s brilliant The Outdoors Fix.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

I have already walked and talked with many of my heroes and heroines, including the Scottish singer, songwriter, storyteller and theatre maker Karine Polwart and the great guitarist and songwriter Richard Thompson (founder of Fairport Convention). I have been a fan of his music since I was a teenager, so to walk around his old haunts in Muswell Hill and hear him play in the garden of the house called “Fairport” that gave the band its name was a dream come true. I have my sights set on persuading the wonderful Shetland fiddle player Aly Bain to record with us soon and if the amazing singer and musician Rhiannon Giddens is reading this, there’s a standing invitation to come for a walk with us.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

The biggest challenge isn’t making wonderful episodes – it’s the sheer continuous hard work you need to put in to make sure anyone notices they’re out there.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

There are over 70 episodes of Folk on Foot, so you could either begin at the beginning with the irrepressible trio called The Young’Uns taking us for a musical walk on the historic Hartlepool Headland – then work your way forward – or you could start with the latest episode featuring the singer and fiddle player Frankie Archer taking her 21st Century approach to folk using loop pedals, drum effects and samples out into the countryside around the town of Consett in County Durham where she grew up. Then work your way back. Either way there are so many treats in store!

Singer, fiddle player, and the latest guest on Folk on Foot, Frankie Archer.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

At our website: www.folkonfoot.com or @folkonfoot on Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter and TikTok. Our episodes are available, as they say “wherever you get your podcasts”.

Although Status: Untraced marks Liam Luxon’s first foray into True Crime podcasting, his experience could rival that of a veteran foreign correspondent. Over three years, his investigation has spanned four countries across two continents, leading him down dark alleys and risky encounters. Amassing 200 hours of interviews, Luxon has unearthed revelations that have eluded others, shedding new light on untold aspects of the case. We spoke to Liam to find out more about his podcast journey…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I’m outgoing, midwestern-grown, and on the brink of turning thirty, fueled by a love for adventure and drawn to tales reminiscent of Indiana Jones and The Jungle Book. Whether it’s hiking, snorkeling, or exploring the diverse culinary scene of Los Angeles, I’m always seeking new experiences. My fascination with the outdoors and diverse cultures led me to stumble upon a mysterious disappearance in the Indian Himalayas. Justin Alexander, a nomadic traveler and survival expert, vanished in 2016. His last known journey, accompanied by a self-proclaimed holy man, was announced to social media with a cryptic message: ‘I should return mid-September or so. If I’m not back by then, don’t look for me.’ Thus began my four-year investigation, chronicled in my podcast, ‘Status: Untraced,’ delving into the enigma of Justin Alexander’s disappearance.

What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?

To be honest, I can’t recall the very first podcast I ever listened to. However, the first docu-series podcast that truly grabbed my attention was Serial. Prior to that, I indulged in a variety of podcasts spanning self-help, news, and comedy genres, such as School of Greatness, The Daily, and This Past Weekend.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I decided to start podcasting because of a fortuitous encounter with Alex Vespestad in 2020. As we became acquainted, he shared Justin Alexander’s story with me. Alex, being a well-established creator of true-crime podcasts, extended an offer to collaborate on a podcast about Justin. Upon delving into Justin’s story, I found myself captivated by his character; he essentially was my imaginary childhood hero – brought to life. The enigmatic circumstances surrounding his disappearance – a suspect found hanged in jail, cryptic messages, and swirling rumors – only fueled my intrigue. Thus, seizing the chance, I eagerly embraced the opportunity to delve into his story through podcasting.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

I draw a lot of inspiration from my initial exposure to Alex’s work alongside Neil Strauss, in the podcast, To Live and Die In LA. From the moment I started listening, I was immediately hooked and managed to binge the entire first season in less than 24 hours. Shout out to Spotify Wrapped for quantifying my obsession.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

As a podcaster, I’ve learned that the journey is full of unexpected twists and turns. From navigating interviews and writing scripts to overcoming hurdles like securing international visas during a global pandemic and even getting a car stuck on a Mexican beach, every step has tested me in new ways. I’ve come to appreciate that life rarely unfolds exactly as planned, but therein lies its beauty. So my biggest lesson has been to trust in myself, my team (Alex truly is a genius; I couldn’t have done this without him), and the timing of the process itself.

Oh, and I’ve also managed to slow my speaking pace, albeit just a little.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

It’s wild to look back on now, but readers can listen to the origin story of my aspirations and career, in addition to the growth of my philosophy on life, by tuning into Status: Untraced. “Check it out on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts…” Sorry, the new podcaster inside of me took over for a second.

As far as any future work goes, we’ll see just have to see what happens! But if you’re curious to stay updated, you’ll find me fairly active on Instagram.

Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard, but we think you should have. Sonder & Salt is a weekly podcast for food lovers by Malaika Malz and Harleigh Reid. Based on the concept of ‘sonder’, the realisation that every passerby has a life as vivid and complex as your own, and the fact that salt is a kitchen essential, the show recognises the complexity of food and the individual lives of people experiencing it.
Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

We are Harleigh & Malaika, and we host Sonder & Salt – the weekly podcast for food lovers. We wanted to create a space to explore our individual relationships with food and how our unique experiences influenced our preferences, opinions and seemingly insignificant food choices.

M: I’m a casual content creator, but I would love to do it full time one day. Over the years I’ve had a YouTube channel, a blog and even hosted weekly cocktail hours on Instagram live. My content is always rooted in my love for food whether it’s eating out, travelling to eat & explore or sharing recipes of my favourite meals.

H: Same for me really. If I bump into someone who says they recognise me I just say, ‘probably from the internet!’

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

H: Another Round which was a Buzzfeed production hosted by Heben and Tracy. It was the highlight of my week and their drunk segment at the end used to give me the giggles when I was working on my dissertation. I still follow Heben on X and her recent commentary on the Beyonce album makes me want them back in a studio together so badly!

M: Food, But We Digress with Alex & Joshua. I found Alex on YouTube & fell in love with the in depth conversations about very specific ingredients and food topics. Some of the best episodes were about their favourite pasta shapes or debating whether it’s better to eat rice with a spoon or fork!

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

M: Harleigh will say I gave her no choice, but I would say it was meant to be!

H: We found each other on social media from our food blogs, developed a friendship and felt that there wasn’t a food centred podcast that you didn’t need to identify as a “foodie” to engage with.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

M: I was really inspired by Alex & Joshua on Food, But We Digress. The conversations have always found the right balance between being entertaining and informative which is something we like to do. Although we’re not a guest based podcast, Comfort Eating with Grace Dent is a good example of having really intimate conversations with guests about their relationships with food and the things they love.

H: I love the interview style on The Sporkful and how when he travels to meet guests it really feels like you’ve gone with him. I mostly use Science Vs by Wendy Zukermann for any food science information on the podcast.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

H: Claire Saffitz! Without a doubt. Her YouTube videos make me feel like she’s baking in my living room, so I need to have her chatting along with me in the studio.

M: I’d love to sit down with Staney Tucci or Chishuru’s head chef Joké Bakare – she’s the first black female Michelin-starred chef in the UK.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

M: I’d say ‘Can you cook jerk chicken in an oven’ featuring Melissa Thompson.

H: ‘Food Love Languages’ is one of our most popular episodes so I usually suggest people start there.

Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard, but we think you should have.  Spiritual Mixtape is a show that helps listeners to find balance in today’s fast-paced world. Host Daisy Mack shares holistic practices that focus on health, wellness and self-care. She’s a true expert in the field, and we caught up with her to learn more about the podcast…
Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I’m Daisy Mack, I help people find their breath as a way to deal with the stress of everyday life. Spiritual Mixtape the podcast is all about exploring life’s ups and downs and the lessons we learn along the way. Each episode is like a different track off your favourite mixtape. It’s meant to make you feel something – ideally better.

In Spiritual Mixtape, we talk about everything from dealing with change and finding your purpose, to the little moments that bring us joy or challenge us to grow. It’s a place for honest conversations about the real stuff we all go through.

My goal is to create a space where we can share stories, reflect on life’s journey, and find some tools to help navigate this mystery we call life.

Spiritual Mixtape host Daisy Mack on the beach

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

It was so long ago I can’t recall. I got into podcasts early on. Around 2006, maybe, before Saltburn era! And back then I can only imagine the spectrum of weird things I would have listened to. I think there would have been a ton of music related podcasts, but spiritual woo woo stuff. So not a lot has changed.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I wanted to make spirituality accessible. There seem to be more gatekeepers than ever with something that should be free to all. I want to share what I know in the hope that the listeners can benefit from the tools I value, like breathwork and meditation. As well as those tough life lessons. My failures have often turned into my greatest assets, but it didn’t feel that way at the time and it would have been comforting to know I wasn’t alone at the time. We are never alone.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

This is a long list, but here are my two faves. I love The Imperfects, it’s like listening to your siblings giving you life advice. A friend recommended it and each episode I have two thoughts “I wish I knew that sooner” and “If I can make my podcast half that good I would be winning”. For astrology there is no one better than Molly McCord. I think in life there are some people who hold a frequency so that others can find them and level up to them. Like being on the same wavelength. What an amazing opinion to have of someone you have never met.

You recently started Junior Zen Zone – can you explain how you create these episodes differently for younger listeners?

Teaching young ones to meditate is a joy. They are naturally more intuitive because they trust their imagination and their senses. When you suggest an idea like “giving your worries to the stars” it’s easy for them to accept. In their mind’s eye they see it and it feels real to them. If I use clear imagery like forests or space, like telling a bedtime story, they slip straight into a meditative state. They have a single point of focus and I try to keep it with breath cues and a fun story.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

That’s a great question. Each episode of the pod is a different tool to help the listener grow, heal or feel better in some way. I always find it interesting what episodes touch people. For me, I would say episode 1 is the perfect intro. However, I had the most emails and comments about the grief episode “how to reframe loss as gain“. The reality is if you have found Spiritual Mixtape you are probably on a journey where endings have played a significant role, so that episode does feel fitting.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

Come and meet me on socials, stan store or the Spiritual Mixtape site. Beyond the podcast I love to give things away to my mailing list so add your details there too.

Simon – how did you get involved in the STUDIOCANAL Presents – The Podcast?

The idea was being talked about for a little while before it actually happened. STUDIOCANAL has, from issue one, been incredibly supportive of my Film Stories project, from the podcast to the print magazine. Over time, the conversation began about an official STUDIOCANAL podcast, to go through this incredible library of films – just as Film Stories’ own podcast was enjoying lots of success.

Following long and very fun conversations with the STUDIOCANAL team, myself and Jane Long – the show’s brilliant producer – got the greenlight, and it’s gone from there.

What’s been your favourite moment of the podcast so far?

Many. The less obvious ones are the films I personally wouldn’t have discovered, so deep in research I found new movies I really liked. On the podcast itself, Ken Loach taking the mickey out of my Midlands accent was something I didn’t ever anticipate happening in my lifetime, nor discussing Asim Chaudhry’s burner account!

But it’s the range of guests really that have helped lift it so much. Lots of interesting people, most of whom I’d never otherwise be able to meet.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

Well, Kevin Costner is always my go-to, but he hasn’t made any STUDIOCANAL films (yet!). Steve Martin would be a joy, though, as would Guillermo del Toro, Celine Song, Jessie Buckley, James Cameron, and Paddington Bear.

What film haven’t you discussed yet but you’d love to?

Oh, Cliffhanger. They veto me every time! Our production meetings are quite something. I’m still thrilled I got Santa Claus: The Movie through!

Do you think that listeners should have seen the films before listening to the episodes?

No. We’re careful to flag up spoilers, although we’re also conscious that sometimes, given the films we’re talking about, it’s hard to avoid chatting about the ending. But I’d still say no you don’t, but inevitably, you’ll get even more out of the show if you have.

How important do you think it is to use clips of the films in the podcast?

It enriches it. Jane Long won’t like me for saying this, but she’s a brilliant producer and editor, and works really hard to make it sound sleek and professional. I mean, it’s what she’s great at, as anyone who listened to her work on the BBC’s Screenshot knows. But the level has from the outset been high, and the clips are very much a part of that.

Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard, but we think you should have. The Happiness Challenge is an award-nominated show test-driving the best happiness habits that science has to offer. The recent series shares short ‘happiness hacks’, asking listeners to try tasks such as writing a letter to your future self, to pondering what ‘connection’ means to you. Host Klaudia Mitura tells us more about the inspirations for the podcast and how to start listening to the show…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

My name is Klaudia Mitura and I am a work psychologist and the Learning and Development Manager at the Science Museum Group, with a purpose to boost happiness in the workplace. I love exploring new scientific insights, but find these can often feel overly complex, with no real application to the realities of our daily life. I therefore started The Happiness Challenge podcast in 2020 with a mission to test-drive the best happiness hacks that science has on offer, and share what I have learnt.

What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?

The first podcast that I ever listened to – and is still one of my favourites – is Squiggly Careers; a podcast by two inspirational women who share tips for having a successful career. I love this podcast because it is fast, practical and effective, helping me to navigate the often confusing world of career development.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

Like so many others, back in 2020 the pandemic cut me off from family and work which was very tough – so I decided to use my training as a Psychologist to discover what science can tell us about the art of happiness. In other words, I knew that I could not make any of my circumstances go away but I just wanted to find out how to feel a little bit happier, even for a few minutes a day.

I called a friend who was also going through a challenging time, and I invited her to go on a happiness journey with me by practising one science-based happiness habit a week. To be honest, it was my friend who really wanted to learn about podcasting so we agreed to record our conversations by sitting in our wardrobes (for better acoustics of course!)

That’s how my experiment of applying the scientific research on happiness to my daily ups and downs turned into a podcast: The Happiness Challenge.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

I like knowledge based podcasts that give me practical tips to make change that I am after. Squiggly Careers as mentioned is definitely one, followed by the CIPD podcast and Tilted: A Lean In podcast. I often listen to podcasts when commuting to work so they have to be the right length with something practical for me to think about.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

I would love to interview Shawn Achor, researcher and the author of the book The Happiness Advantage who with a huge wealth of research shows that happiness leads to success not the other way around as we tend to believe. Shawn’s book was one of the first ones I picked up on the science of happiness many years back and definitely shaped my thinking about fulfilment in life.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

The format of the podcast needs to work for you so don’t be afraid to come up with a format that suits your personal purpose. It took me some time to figure out the right structure for me but once I landed on the current format of publishing three linked episodes where I am speaking to a leading expert, putting their tips to the test and sharing my findings (and feelings), I truly became the explorer I always wanted to be!

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Start with my new Happiness Reset Campaign, which focuses on 25 bitesize practical, science-based hacks to create more happiness at work, in relationships and in your own skin. You can spend only a few minutes a day listening, and then try out something practical and see the results straight away. If you like this, I also recommend other related past episodes so you can dive deeper into topics that interest you.

Last month we shared in our newsletter the incredible milestone of Everyday Positivity: 22nd of December marked the 2000 episode of the daily show! We caught up with host Kate Cocker to find out more about the show and how it came to be…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

Hi there I’m Kate!

Everyday Positivity is a short daily podcast that reminds you to be kind to yourself, and gives you ways to take on the world with a positive mindset. You might get a nugget of advice, or a story from my ridiculous life that will help. More often than not I pick up great morsels of wisdom from talking to people day to day and I think “I HAVE to share that with the community”.

My key message is that positivity is not about pasting a smile over the cracks of life, it’s about knowing you can cope with the cracks of life…. It’s just that sometimes you need reminding that you have 100% got this. And that is why Everyday Positivity exists.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

The moment I “got into” podcasting was with the audio drama We’re Alive from 2009.

The story starts in LA as a “virus” starts spreading across the city. It evolves into a full blown zombie apocalypse. The story is told by “Michael” and the people he meets, via the diaries he encourages them to keep. The narrative is the diaries, and it was beautifully crafted.

It was the first time I had heard something that I could see in my mind’s eye as a movie. It also felt that you had found this gang of underground actors that were making a name for themselves. They felt like my own special discovery. At the time they were sponsored by a company that put fish tanks in office vestibules. It was a proud moment when the advertising voice said “with Audible…”, I thought “they’ve made it”.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

At the beginning of 2017 I went through a bout of depression. I had suffered before, but I could always boil it down to some sort of reason – loss of a job, change in life situation, postnatal depression. This time I couldn’t understand it. So as part of my healing, I deployed some self care. I started with a new trainer at the gym and got in with a group of amazing women (they had a Whatsapp group called “PMA Ladies”). In both cases they were vocal with their praise and positivity – it made me feel so much better, and I healed.

This podcast was born out of that. I felt that if I needed reminding every day to be positive, feel good and be kind to myself, there would be others too. All I wanted to do was remind people to be kind to themselves. You can do so much more when you are not beating yourself up – what a waste of time it turns out to be.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

I love podcasts like The Hidden Brain, Work Life with Adam Grant and Dolly Parton’s America. Podcasts that are sort of documentaries but actually well curated, and designed interviews. There is a neat podcast called Lobster Brain (my podcasting company Purposeful Podcasts produces this), their guests are very wise, and I enjoy hearing Scott Thomas interview some really wise Millenials in Learning As I Go (which we also produce).

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

Easy. The listeners and I decided last year that Dolly Parton is the Patron Saint of Everyday Positivity. Every time you see her interviewed she is so REAL, and draws her positivity from accepting things as they are and rolling with them. If I could bottle that for the world, I would.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Always today’s!

A few weeks ago, the winners of this year’s International Women Podcast Awards were announced, and some individuals and small teams made an appearance.  One of these was the UK-based Single Sounds, a podcast with a difference – it finds its listeners dates! Single Sounds is designed as an alternative dating method to apps, and the results can be heart-warming – and hilarious.

We ask Katie Mc to tell us more about the indie podcast that came runner up in the ‘moment of comedy gold’ category…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

Hello, I am Katie Mc the creator and host of Single Sounds. I am 27, live in London, single and like the majority of people overwhelmed, frustrated and uninspired by the modern dating landscape. This is where my idea for Single Sounds stemmed from, I have been on too many bad dates from dating apps and put this down to knowing nothing about the individual I was matching with. I started Single Sounds to create a new fun and authentic method of dating. I interview anonymous singles and the listeners of the show can write in to date my guests if they like the sound of them. As I like to say this podcast is for people who have too much personality for a dating app.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

A friend introduced me to Girls Gotta Eat, a US-based dating and relationships podcast and this is still my favourite show today.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I absolutely love podcasts and believe in the strong sense of self you can get from them, so I thought it was perfect for a dating medium. I was convinced that bringing dating profiles to life in an interview format would be a much better way of communicating someone’s needs and wants when it comes to finding a partner.

Did you take inspiration from any podcasts before starting?

Truthfully – no. The structure of my early episodes came from popular dating app prompts and the current episode structure comes from my dad’s advice that for a long-term happy relationship, you need the 3 A’s “acceptance, adventure and affection”. However, I was inspired and continue to be inspired by many female UK-based podcast hosts to be creatively brave and just start such as Emily Clarkson, Alex Light, Deborah Frances-White, Rubina Pabani and Poppy Jay.

You recently came Runner-up at the IWPA – which episode can we listen to your award-winning comedy gold?

My submission for the award was taken from Episode 48 ‘The one with the porn date at the Tate’ released 10th January 2023.

What’s the secret to good podcast comedy?

Something I didn’t anticipate when starting my podcasting journey was how much humour and entertainment would be in each episode of Single Sounds. The dating stories shared are always truly unique and often hilarious as well as learning about people’s quirks and unusual interests, hobbies, turn-ons, and turn-offs. I laugh constantly throughout each episode, and I think what makes good podcast comedy is how honest, raw, authentic, and ultimately relatable each guest is and the stories they share.

Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard, but we think you should have. Today we’re shining the light onto the new podcast from a magazine we also love. Before They Knew Better is from DIY Magazine (the UK’s biggest independent music publication) which turns back the clock and shines a light on the good, the bad, and the damn right ridiculous moments of your favourite music stars’ teenage years. …

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I’m Lisa Wright, Features Editor at DIY Magazine (where we’re all about music, contrary to what certain people sending us soldering tips might think…). Our podcast Before They Knew Better – which I host alongside producer Giles Bidder – takes the famous music and music- adjacent faces you might see on our pages and grills them about their childhood and teenage years, before they became the cool pop stars they are now. In each episode, guests bring in a song, a photo and an object that relates to a specific moment or memory of growing up: amusing anecdotes (hopefully) occur!

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

When we’re interviewing people for the mag and website, the stories naturally tend to be about the album someone’s releasing/ the tour they’re about to start etc. We wanted a chance to speak to loads of the artists we love about something completely different and to hear stories that they’ve probably never had a chance to tell before in a regular music chat. On a personal level, I love interviewing people and feel sad that word counts mean you sometimes have to chop a lot of the silly/ off-piste/ more conversational stuff out; with podcasting, you don’t!

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

Probably The Adam Buxton Podcast, I think. He’s such a maestro at making a conversation feel really natural and easy, even though half the time I’m sure he’s probably only met the guest for the first time five minutes ago. I love how he knows exactly how much of himself to put into the chat, where his personality and point of view is still completely present, but he never makes it too much about himself. A true legend of the game, and hilarious to boot.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

We had a few iterations of format ideas for the podcast in the beginning, but I’m completely unashamed to have looked entirely to Off Menu when it came to what we knew could work: a clearly defined framework, but with room for going rogue and tailoring to people’s personalities and quirks on each episode. We’ve recorded an episode of Before They Knew Better with James Acaster that’s coming out soon, and I’m pretty sure we fangirled hard about how much of an inspiration his legendary pod has been.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

I’m super chuffed with the guests who’ve been kind enough to trust us and sign up for the first season; we’ve already released episodes with Sigrid, Olivia Dean, Bastille and Mae Muller, and we’ve got loads of top tier guests lined up for the rest of the year. In terms of dreams though, I’m going through an absolute Robbie Williams renaissance right now (I say right now, I mean since I was about nine years old) and I think he’s the perfect sort of personality for this podcast: cheeky, silly, sentimental and with undoubtedly some glorious stories up his sleeve.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from creating the podcast so far?

I think just to let the conversation go wherever it goes and to really lean into the personality of whoever you’re talking to. This sort of interview isn’t about hard-hitting news journalism and trying to get a specific angle out of someone; whereas for the magazine, I’ll have prepared a whole set of questions, the podcast works best when you leave things up to the moment and go with the flow. That, and not to stress if you say something silly cos the edit is your friend (thank you Giles xox).

Mother of All Solutions is an independent podcast that was nominated in the ‘Best Family Podcast’ at the British Podcast Awards in 2022, and features conversations about careers and caring for today’s parents. We caught up with host, Laura Broderick…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I’m Laura Broderick and my day job is not at all podcast related – I’m a partnerships manager working with architecture and built environment companies. I’m also a mum to two young kids and my podcast, Mother of All Solutions, is all about careers and caring – conversations with parents about their work and family lives, as the juggle is real!

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

One of the first was definitely The Guilty Feminist – it was in 2018 and my friend recommended it. I still think friend recommendations are a great way to share and find out about podcasts.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I was on maternity leave with my second child and was having lots of conversations with other mums about the stresses of working around your kids – being kept in the loop, finding flexible roles, securing childcare etc. I felt it was important to record and share those stories – and luckily I had a friend who already had a podcast and said he would help me get started. That was 4 years ago.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

Well, I like lots of podcasts – comedy, news, culture, companion podcasts. But in terms of inspiration for my own I am really inspired by how the Doing It For The Kids podcast support parents and what they produce for their listeners. It’s a special community.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

That’s hard as I really like speaking to lots of people, including ordinary parents. I would love to do more mini series focusing on mothers who aren’t typically spotlighted, and have more time to get to know them and put their voices/experiences into something really special. But it would be pretty cool to interview Jacinda Ardern as a dream guest!

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

I have a new trailer that hopefully communicates what the podcast is about, so start with that. And if you would like to hear a range of voices and sounds – mums, dads, campaigners, an MP – try The March of the Mummies – I really enjoyed making that one in Newcastle. Or if you prefer a good old chat I just interviewed Vicki and Lauren from the TV show Sewing Bee!

I’m on Instagram and Twitter X as @SolutionsMother and I have a new website (still a work in progress) that’s motherofallsolutions.com and would love people’s ideas and feedback.

The Poodcast Bum Book 2

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

We are Evie and Claudia and our podcast is about bowel and bladder conditions! We want to break the stigma around discussing these issues, so we always use humour as the backbone to our chats and interviews (we hope!)

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

Evie: The first podcast I ever listened to was My Favourite Murder with Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff! I still listen every week.

Claudia: Mine was My Dad Wrote a Porno. I was gutted when it ended, it was always my weekly pick me up.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

Evie: I wanted someone to talk to about my various toilet mishaps and I couldn’t believe it when Claudia mentioned off-hand one day she’d been struggling with IBS and had had to sit in the toilet at the theatre for the whole show. I had no idea one of my closest friends and I had never shared our experiences with each other and wondered how many other people could benefit from these types of conversations. So, naturally, I asked Claudia if she’d like to broadcast our issues worldwide.

Claudia: I’ll be honest, when Evie came to me with the idea of creating a comedy podcast on bowel and bladder issues I was so nervous that I had to go to the bathroom. The irony was not lost on me. But once we put our first episode out there it was not only cathartic, it was heartwarming to see how many other people were going through similar issues. It felt like a no-brainer to keep creating more episodes.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

Evie: I love Kathy Burke’s When There’s a Will, There’s a Wake. The format of the show enables the guests to be funny, whilst also often covering personal and human issues, which is something Claudia and I would like to emulate. I’ve also loved Elis James and John Robins’ How Do You Cope? and have taken great inspiration in managing difficult conversations and how to ask the most interesting questions.

Claudia: I became obsessed with Dolly Alderton’s podcast Love Stories because it quite literally felt like receiving a hug. That’s what I wanted to put out into the world. If we were going to create a podcast I wanted our listeners to feel comfort from our humour and the stories we shared. What has been the most rewarding thing about this process has been receiving messages from listeners who have resonated with The Poodcast in that very way.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

Evie: Sadly, it was Deborah James. Her strength, resilience and humour during her illness was nothing short of astounding and we tried so hard to speak to her before she died.

Claudia: I would love to get Jameela Jamil on the podcast. Not only because I love her podcast I Weigh and think she manages to tackle really sensitive issues with such heart and ferocity but also because I hear she has some of the funniest poop stories in the biz.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Evie: It’s hard to say, but I think the conversation with Lauren Mahon about bowel cancer was a really enlightening one. At the risk of sounding like a narcissist, starting with a ‘Just the Poo of Us’ special is also good, to see if you can stand our voices as we feature in every episode!

Claudia: I agree a ‘Just the Poo of Us’ is a good place to start or I still have a particular fondness for our episode with Billie Anderson (S1 Ep 13), it’s a good mix of total silliness and a very real delve into the life of somebody with a bowel condition.

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

My Name is Andrew Flewitt, and I am the creator and host of Queer I Am, The Podcast. The podcast is about celebrating and amplifying voices in the Queer community.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

The first podcast I was dedicated to listening to was Happy Place, by Fearne Cotton; the interviews are always so interesting, and I love her style when she is talking to the guests about topics which are sensitive by nature, I took a lot from this.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I love speaking with people, and listening to inspiring stories, and always had the dream of being a host or an interviewer of some kind. When I moved to Brighton, I was having incredible conversations with people in the queer community, and it felt like a good idea to put these two things together and start Queer I Am. Queer culture and history is so interesting and important; I wanted the podcast to provide an opportunity to amplify underrepresented voices and give the listener something new.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

Happy Place for sure, but I also love other Queer podcasts like Coming Out Stories and The Log Books – they are so interesting engaging, and I wanted Queer I Am to feel like that too.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

I have few, but I would love to chat with Sir Ian McKellen, someone who has been such an instrumental part in moving queer history forward.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

There are so many to chose from, and they are all brilliant! One of my favourites was in Season 2, with Bethan Roberts, Author of My Policeman, which was released as a film last year. Bethan was lovely to talk to, and is such an ally of our community.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

They can check out my Insta and Twitter @fleweyactually. My website is www.fleweyactually.com and the podcast is available on all major streaming platforms.
