Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard of yet. Today we’re speaking to Sabrina Clarke creator of BRKIN Bread: For The Hungry Mind…

The topics discussed in BRKIN Bread are wide-ranging. From colourism and Idris Elba, to Arsenal or Manchester United, and asking ‘Should Ukrainian refugees be sent to Rwanda?’ the conversations are feeding curiosity. Meanwhile, host Sabrina feeds her guest, making these episodes an insight to a dinner-party with a difference.

Who are you, and what’s your podcast about?

I am the Founder of Lateral Theory, an independent digital media company where difference creates. I created, produce and host BRKIN Bread. BRKIN Bread is an audio-visual podcast for the hungry mind. I invite dinner guests to dine and debate over a three-course African or Caribbean meal expertly curated by a Chef. My guests do not know each other or topics until they are at the BRKIN Bread table. BRKIN Bread is about the art of conversation and demonstrates we can disagree without being disagreeable. All opinions, politically correct or counter-cultural, are welcome at my table.

Sabrina Clarke, creator and host of Brkin Bread for for Lateral Theory

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

Revisionist History

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

When I discovered podcasting as a medium, I knew it would be the future. I also know that I have a perspective and a voice that is uniquely mine and creates a space for dialogue, debate, and education, for which podcasting provides an avenue. As an outlier, podcasting gives me the opportunity to explore and stretch my creativity while edutaining. As a Founder, I get to create jobs and support local businesses, which is essential to how I operate.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

At the moment, The Shop UNINTERRUPTED.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

For BRKIN Bread, this would be a table. To have a spicy conversation, my table would be Michelle Obama, Trevor Noah, JK Rowling, Andrew Tate, Piers Morgan.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

This is like asking if I have a favourite child. All episodes are a perfect introduction to BRKIN Bread. Tune into any episode, and you will get a flavour.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

You can find out more about me at sabrinaverse.com. You can catch BRKIN Bread on all audio platforms and on YouTube @lateraltheory.

Rob Moore started the Disruptors Podcast back in 2016 and soon grew it to the UK largest business podcast. Since then, Rob has become a prolific podcaster, and is also the creator and host of the Money podcast. But we wanted to learn more about where it all started…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I’m Rob Moore – Entrepreneur, Investor, Author, Podcaster and two-time Public Speaking World Record Holder. My show is a mix of disruptive content and unedited interviews with the likes of Russell Kane, Caitlyn Jenner, Peter Schiff and Jordan Belfort.

What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?

Joe Rogan’s interview with James Hetfield of Metallica. I love rock music, & loved the hybrid, voyeuristic nature of education, information, biography and entertainment.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

When I started, not many people were podcasting. As a broadcaster I’m always looking for new ways to reach people to fulfil my mission of getting better financial education out to the world. As the author or ‘Life Leverage’ I’m always looking for life hacks, so while everyone else was listening to music in the gym & I had podcasts on, on 2x speed. And podcasting is the perfect cathartic outlet for all the lack of attention I received as a child and FAR cheaper than therapy.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

Masters of Scale by Reid Hoffman. Joe Rogan’s interviews with rock and metal frontmen and women. Any long form interviews with ‘Disruptors’.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

Arnold Schwarzenegger or Ricky Gervais. As I can’t decide we can record a 3 way conversation at my house together.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

I’ll give you two:

1. Do NOT talk. The less you say, the better the interview. The interviews are NOT about the interviewer, far too many interviewers want to be the guest.

2. Do NOT build rapport. Everyone tells you to do that, but you want to get straight in and have an edge to the interview. An unknown element; feeling each other out. Drama.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Probably my interview with Caitlyn Jenner. It has a bit of everything in it, & she’s quite shocked in places too. Plus she flirts with me a bit and I don’t know what to do about that.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

Onlyfans, Ha. Only if my podcasting career bombs. www.robmoore.com & the #Disruptors podcast of course.

With England facing Denmark this evening in the semi-finals of Euro 2020, what better time to share this article by Stak from last month’s Pod Bible magazine.

The Football Ramble was started in 2007 by Luke Moore, Marcus Speller, Pete Donaldson and Jim Campbell. Since then, the Ramble has grown enormously from releasing daily episodes to welcoming four new members to the Ramble team: Jules Breach (BT Sport, talkSPORT), Andy Brassell (BT Sport, BBC), Kate Mason (Sky Sports) and Vithushan Ehantharajah (The Independent). Equal parts informative and hilarious, the Ramble remains the football fan’s one-stop shop for all things football.

Football Ramble 2020 lineup

After being delayed a year due to the pandemic, this summer’s European Championships arrives with perhaps more excitement than ever before. It will be symbolic of a tentative return to normality for much of the UK – fans may well be allowed into stadiums, pub gardens will be full of revellers catching England games on the big screen and the country will be gripped by a football frenzy not seen since the World Cup in 2018. Games will come in thick and fast over the four weeks, so keeping up with everything the tournament throws at you might be a daunting prospect.

The Football Ramble is the only podcast you’ll need to accompany you through this summer’s festival of football. We’ll be releasing new episodes every single day throughout the tournament, full of the usual insight and laughs that set us apart as the world’s biggest independent football show. We’ll break down all the latest results, unpack the funniest stories the tournament throws up and keep you up to date with England’s chances – no matter how slim they may be!

Charlie Morgan, Senior Producer of the Football Ramble:

“The behind-the-scenes work has already begun – releasing episodes every day for the entire tournament means most of the preparation will need to be done in advance by the hosts, assistant producer Finn and myself. Whether it be creating factsheets on certain teams, sorting the hosts’ scheduling around travel plans or stocking cupboards with coffee pods, there’s a massive range of things to be sorting out. Thirty-odd consecutive shows is quite an undertaking, but what a privilege to be able to make a whole host of content around Europe’s biggest international football tournament. Bring it on!”

Vish Ehantharajah, Football Ramble Host:

“I genuinely can’t wait for the Euros to start, for a few reasons. Firstly, it’ll be the first time I’ve covered a football tournament since the 2012 Olympics. Then there’s the fact we might win the thing (we won’t). And to be a part of the Ramble team for it will be pretty incredible. The last year on the show has been a bit of a lucid dream, so to be on the ones-and-twos for an international football tournament is going to be something else! For me, the best part of summer football tournaments is joint experience with mates. Maybe it’s because everyone’s in a good mood when the sun is out, but it’s such a wholesome experience and I don’t think there’s anything quite like it. So to be having all that at what technically constitutes ‘work’ is crazy to me. And above all, I hope that comes across in what we produce.”

Daily shows will be released on the Football Ramble feed and over on Football Ramble Presents we’ll still be releasing episodes of four European football show, On The Continent. That’s the place for unrivalled analysis and insight from some of the biggest European football journalists in the world. We’re also planning a special run of ‘Ramble Meets…’ interview episodes, all with a Euros flavour. Find daily episodes of the Football Ramble on all major podcasting platforms, or listen via hyperurl.co/ramble.

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

My name is Vice beats, I’m a Bristol based music producer, educator and promoter among other things. The podcast I host is called Diggin’ The Crates, in collaboration with The Find in Holland.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

I’m honestly not sure, it was a long time ago! I started making podcasts in 2010 when Podomatic was one of the biggest platforms. At the time there were some great shows on there. I think possibly it was Diesler, an amazing Soul / Funk producer, he had a brilliant fortnightly pod.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I’ve always loved radio, and have hosted a number of shows over time, but I think the perfectionist in me always felt like i could make it sound better. The fact that podcasts (in the main) come together in the editing process really feeds into my passion for making music. Plus I love stories. I’ve always enjoyed talking to inspiring people and finding out more about what the they do and learning about their craft, so to have a platform to share those stories has always been an appealing aspect of podcasts.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

There’s a fair few that I love. I’d say the main one is Hip Hop Saved My Life with Romesh Ranganathan, who was actually one of my very first guests on Diggin’ The Crates! Alongside him there’s some great shows I listen to regularly and take inspiration from including Breakin Atoms, Crate 808, Dad Bod Rap Pod, Bedroom Beethovens and so many more. I love digging deeper into Hip Hop culture, and it’s a nice break from constantly listening to music.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

I’ve been lucky enough to already have a number of my dream guests! But I’d say the biggest one for me is Questlove. I would absolutely love to talk to him about his creative process and understand more about what he does. Having read his books and listened to various interviews with him, I feel like there’s still so much more to learn from him.

In addition to Questlove, I would love to talk to Black Thought, Rag N Bone Man, Jazzy Jeff, Pharaoh Monch. There’s so many! I’m very lucky that over time I’ve managed to talk to some of my musical heroes, and in addition Danny at The Find has made a number of my guest based dreams comer true!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

I think it’s having a structure that you can own. When I first started podcasting it took me so long to edit, and I’ve learnt over time that if you have a solid idea and structure it can speed up the whole process and ultimately make it more enjoyable.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Great question! They’re all very different, but I’d say possibly Mecca:83 or Damu The Fudgemunk. I like to keep conversations natural, and not be too rigid, and I think they are perfect examples of what can happen when a guest who doesn’t often do interviews gets a chance to talk about their music when they’re settled into the conversation. It creates this amazing synergy that I think as a listener can really hook you in and feel part of the discussion.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

Personally, you can check me out on Instagram – @vicebeats and check out my music on Spotify etc as Vice beats, or vicebeats.bandcamp.com.

You can find Diggin’ The Crates at thefindmag.com or @thefind on Insta. They’ve been going for years and well worth checking out for some amazing music, recommendations and insight into musical culture.
