]]>Have you ever laid in bed, and just before drifting off to sleep, found yourself imagining how you would break out of prison or pull off the greatest diamond heist in history? Well, Harry Clark and Paul Gorton have.
The two biggest breakout stars of The Traitors 2024, Harry and Paul are back to plot even more dastardly schemes in their new show Harry & Paul Are…Devious. From the creators of Football Ramble and Abroad in Japan, this new podcast series sees the duo poring over some of the most infamous botched crimes in history and plotting their own play to help them get away with it.
From penguin theft to someone revealing their hiding location on Snapchat Maps, the boys have to decide whose new Devious plan is better. Sending heads into hands and the pair into hysterics, this show brings an entertaining and lighthearted warmth to the True Crime genre.
Now, Harry and Paul have decided to become the agony uncles you didn’t know you needed in an extra episode called ‘Devious Dilemmas’. Each week, listeners will send in their dilemmas for Harry and Paul to decipher on the show. Combating crazy friendship stories or finding hidden meanings in inexplicable dreams, Harry and Paul are balancing out their mischievous ways by bringing solutions to the listeners’ daily dramas.
So, as a sneak peek into the outrageous, wicked, but wholly hilarious minds of Harry and Paul, we asked them to interview each other, diving a little bit deeper into their devious dreams.
PG: I’d do lots of smaller ones, I know full well that if I did one I’d get addicted and have to do another. Lots of small ones keep me entertained and wealthy, possibly less likely to be caught too as I can plan multiple attempts rather than hope that just one goes off without a hitch.
HC: It’s got to be robbing a bank – the biggest in history so then I can live the rest of my life sitting on a beach sipping cocktails!
HC: Definitely dependent on the crime, for example under the cover of darkness, carrying out a bank heist would be a perfect opportunity as everyone is in bed. However, sometimes committing crimes in the daytime to fit in with the general public is a great idea, like nicking an apple from a fruit stand! Actually, bit harsh, maybe not.
PG:
1. Margot Robbie – ultimate distraction
2. Harry Winkle (AKA Harry Clark) – criminal mastermind, charm an insider
3. Beyoncé – sing us a song whilst heisting
4. Stephen Fry – genius, trustworthy, no one will suspect
5. Lewis Hamilton – getaway driver
PG: Shave hair and beard off, wear a prosthetic mask and blue contact lenses. And a Scottish accent, of course.
Listen and subscribe to Harry And Paul Are…Devious with new episodes released twice a week, and make sure to DM your Devious Dilemmas to the show’s Instagram account @Harryandpaulpod.

]]>The post REVIEW // Facing Evil with Rasha Pecoraro and Yvette Gentile appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>For those of you who missed Root of Evil, this 2019 hit saw hosts and sisters Rasha Pecoraro and Yvette Gentile unravel their own family secrets. They set about exploring their grandfather Dr George Hodel’s involvement in the 1947 Elizabeth Short case, The Black Dahlia Murder. And now Pecoraro and Gentile are back with Facing Evil, delving into a different case each week with a touching affinity to families also hit by tragedy.
This podcast starts as an ode to Hawaii, where the hosts are from. And this is where the first case takes place. Lisa Au left her boyfriend’s sister’s house in Honolulu one night in 1982, and no spoilers, but it did not end well for her.
Pecoraro and Gentile go through the various suspects (it’s always the boyfriend, right?) and discuss the chilling possibility that it was someone posing as a police officer who pulled her over to the side of the road that night.
Episode 2 covers the 1998 murder of 21-year-old gay student Matthew Shepard. He was approached by two men at a bar and inexplicably left with them. He was found the next day tied to a fence, and died six days later as a result of his injuries.
Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson were caught and charged, and this case brought hate crimes to the forefront of the public’s mind. The suspects even used homophobic slurs during their testimonies to the police.
Pecoraro is gay. Gentile is clearly an ally. Pecoraro came out at 30 (she is now 43), and says she would have come out sooner if not for this murder, which took place while she was in high school. The direct impact of this murder on these sisters is tangible.
The first two cases addressed by Facing Evil led to changes in US legislation. In the Lisa Au case, police officers are no longer allowed to use blue lights on top of civilian-appearing cars, because it is too easy to impersonate. The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act was introduced and signed into law by President Barack Obama. It aims to protect people from hate crimes at any time, and not just while partaking in protected activities like voting or going to school. Byrd was also murdered in 1998 and dragged for three miles behind a pickup truck because he was black.
This podcast series carries a higher message of promoting a better understanding on gender, race and homosexuality. This may be a bit intense at times – there is none of the light relief you get from a true crime comedy podcast such as Wine & Crime or Murder Most Irish – but remember, they are coming from a country that has just overturned abortion rights, and they’re coming for the gays next. And while there are still people out there scared to come out, or preferring to be dead, keeping these topics in the public eye is super important. Pecoraro and Gentile embody this message with sympathetic treatment of victims and stories and without being too preachy.

‘The Takedown Producer and Narrator, Matthew Nelson
Honestly, it’s a bit of both. I do watch a lot of the true crime docs on TV, stuff like Making a Murderer, Tiger King (obviously), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark. And shows like Crimetown, Serial, and S-Town are big influences on the kind of podcasts I’ve made, and the things I aspire to make. But most of all, I’m a bit of a heist nerd. I don’t think there’s a heist movie I haven’t seen. And the best ones — Heat, The Town, Den of Thieves (you may laugh, but I think it’s immense), Widows — I know off by heart. The opportunity to make a podcast homage to that genre was really exciting. I wanted to capture the energy and propulsion of these films, but also stay true to the things that make podcasts so great and give the listener time to really be immersed in this crazy world of early MMA and heists.
HA! For anyone who hasn’t heard it yet, Crime Show’s regular host, Emma Courtland, describes me as sounding like I’m something out of a Guy Ritchie movie. That was mostly because there are a lot of commonalities between Lee Murray’s story and something like Snatch. And also because the aesthetics of those films really informed the sound design we went for (shoutout to Daniel Ramirez and Bobby Lord for mixing and scoring). But, yes, it’s a huge honor. Guy Ritchie has a fine reputation for casting extremely handsome men in his films — Brad Pitt, Jason Statham, Charlie Hunnam, and Frank from Eastenders — so I’m in good company.
I asked this question to a lot of people who knew Lee and the most popular answer I got was Tom Hardy. And I think that’s a great choice. He’s been in a film about fighters before (the excellent Warrior), and he’s also in a Guy Ritchie movie (the less-than-excellent RockNRolla).
Check out anything with Ariel Helwani. Not podcasts but also great: Jon Wertheim wrote an excellent piece about Lee for Sports Illustrated, and his book about the early MMA scene, Blood in the Cage, is phenomenal. Shaun Assael (who’s in the podcast) also wrote a great story about Lee for ESPN. After you’ve read those, you should just re-listen to The Takedown. At 0.5x speed.

Listen to The Takedown, pt.1 and The Takedown, pt.2 now on Spotify.

Tonya and Talia, co-hosts of the “hardcore” true crime podcast Crimes & Consequences
I am an attorney and co-host of Crimes & Consequences true crime podcast. My co-host, Tonya, and I are partners at our own law firm and lovers of all things true crime. We consider Crimes & Consequences to be a “hardcore” true crime podcast, because we don’t hold back on the graphic details of the crimes. In fact, our goal in creating this podcast was to give our listeners as many specifics about the cases as possible. There is a dark side to humans that we find fascinating and we explore this through discussions of true crime homicide cases.
It may come as a surprise to many, but I had never heard of a podcast until April of 2019, when my sister introduced me to Crime Junkie. Then I discovered Morbid and Casefiles and began listening to these podcasts on my drive to and from work.
Tonya and I would listen to different true crime stories and discuss them with each other during our lunch break. In the summer of 2019, we decided to learn about podcasting as a sort of hobby. The concept seemed simple enough: record a really interesting true crime story and share it with others. We began recording in our office during our spare time and it was so much fun, that we decided to take it up a notch and release the recordings publicly.
I really am inspired by the podcast Casefiles. As a lawyer, I can appreciate the amount of research that goes into all of their stories and I aspire to include as many facts and details in each episode of Crimes & Consequences.
I would love to interview John Edward Douglas, a retired special agent and unit chief in the FBI. He is a criminal profiler and I’ve read all of his books.
I learned very quickly that there was a lot more to podcasting than just telling a story. If thousands of people are going to be listening to you, it’s really important that each and every case is thoroughly researched to ensure accuracy; if you make a mistake someone is going to point it out. There was a large learning curve with editing and recording, since we were starting from ground zero. In addition, I think it took us a few episodes to really figure out who we were and what we were about. What started out as two friends chit-chatting about true crime, developed into a show dealing with more serious issues such as wrongful convictions, questionable convictions, missing persons and unsolved murders. As the listeners sort through our playlist, they can hear the natural evolution into what we are today.
One of the more recent podcasts that I really enjoyed is EP62: Don’t Go in the Basement. It is a story that has never been told before by any other media source and it’s a great murder mystery.
