From chart topping entertainment podcast Loose Lips to award winning parenting pod Made by Mammas, the team work across a huge variety of genres, which has even included farming, fishing, dogs and reggae!

The Moments That Made Me with Roxie Nafousi
You can learn a lot from someone when you look at what they’ve been through to get to where they are now; it’s those highs and lows, the breaking points and the epiphanies. Roxie Nafousi expertly gets her guests to share all about those moments that made them in one of the most open and raw podcasts, from global names to those you might not have heard of but have the most inspiring stories. LISTEN NOW >>
Baffled: Amazing Facts That Are Complete Nonsense
Someone once described Baffled as “come for the facts, stay for the banter”. While that might seem like a cheesy tagline, it does sum up the podcast rather well! Dan, Conor and Mark bring 40 minutes of pure fun while also educating you with 9 of the most random, and frankly nonsense, facts they’ve found. From learning about Ancient Persians holding all their debates twice (once drunk and once sober) through to octopuses punching fish for no reason – this is the place for the random facts you never knew you needed! LISTEN NOW >>
The Rude Retellings – Read By Brian Harvey
Who’d have thought that Brian Harvey reading old literature would have us rolling on the floor with laughter? First he took on Dickens, then Shakespeare – but in his very own, East End style! These are some of the most classic stories that you’ve never heard read like this. It’s rude, it’s uncensored and it’s unapologetic!
“Romeo had made his move, he took the hand of Juliet and said ‘alright babe, you’re well fit’.” LISTEN NOW >>
Music In My Life with Laura Wright
Music plays such a big role in our lives and soprano Laura Wright explores why each week. The episodes mix between guests, revealing the music which has a strong affinity in their life, and episodes exploring sub genres or styles of music and why it has the effect on us that it does. For any big music fans this is a must listen to get an incredible insight on the music which shapes our lives. LISTEN NOW >>
How Are You? The Wellbeing Podcast
How Are You? But actually, how are you? Hosted by Connie Simmonds; health and beauty influencer, and healthy living, body confidence and self-love advocate. Connie is passionate about mental health and living happily and healthily, which is what this podcast is all about. ]]>The post Top 5 episodes – Seize Your Adventure: An Epilepsy Podcast appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>I Am A Runner by Amanda Plomp
Wow, I didn’t realise how hard it is to look back over your work and pick your Divine 5! But this narrative episode holds a special place in my heart. It was the first story written specifically for a podcast format. Amanda’s passion for running eclipses any concerns she might have around heading into the backcountry with epilepsy. Listen to this for a great story that teaches just a little bit about epilepsy. The music by Kev Rowe was such a perfect match to the story as well. Listen now on Acast >>

Adventurers Talk Epilepsy
This episode is a great place to start for both people who don’t know about epilepsy, and for people who do. Most of the chats on Seize Your Adventure are with people living with epilepsy, and we learn about how they do adventure sports with the condition. This episode flipped it around and I talked to people who work in the outdoor sector and asked what they knew about the condition. It was a great way to correct a few epilepsy myths, and reassure people with epilepsy that they can safely access the outdoors, and will be welcomed. Listen now on Acast >>

A Chat with Jade Nelson: Keto for Epilepsy, Camping and her Seizure Story
I have spoken to so many interesting people with epilepsy about their passion for adventure sports: runners, hikers, surfers, climbers, triathletes and extreme adventurers. I wish I could pick all of their episodes! But if I can only pick one, I think it’s fair to pick my very first chat. Jade is based in Texas, so it was about 7am for her when we were recording. This is a pretty in-depth conversation for that time of the morning, about mental struggles due to epilepsy, but also the fun sports and challenges Jade has done over the years. So memorable and such a good sign of what was to come… Listen now on Acast >>

The Outdoor Mindset
The episode I am most proud of is The Outdoor Mindset. It was a big story to tell – not just about the organisation Outdoor Mindset, but also sharing some information about neurological conditions, and talking about my own trip to Colorado. I interviewed several different people in many different locations, made some on-site recordings, did a lot of research and scripting. It all took much longer than I thought it would! But I hope the end result is entertaining, informative and an easy listen. Listen now Acast>>

Can I Do Adventure Sports with Epilepsy?
Spoiler – the short answer is yes! But this episode is definitely worth a listen for anyone who is interested in adventure sports, what epilepsy is, how to adapt activities and assess risks. This gets to the essence of the Seize Your Adventure podcast, so if there is one podcast about epilepsy you listen to today – this is the episode to head to. Listen now on Acast>>

One, two, skip a few… That’s how everyone goes through back-catalogues, right? If you are brand new to Pod Bible, I have to point you to the inaugural episode of the podcast. It dives straight in the deep end with No Such Thing As A Fish (pun fully intended). Listen to Adam and Stu chatting to Dan Schreiber about the massively successful show, as well as some great recommendations from Kate Thornton from White Wine Question Time. Plus, there’s far too much fun being had by the team from Birthday Girls House Party! Listen here >>

What’s one of the best things about applying for jobs in the podcast world? You can get to know your potential colleagues before you even send your CV! When Pod Bible Podcast turned 50 episodes young, the Pod Bible originators celebrated with chats from Pip about his Distraction Pieces Podcast, as well as a few recommendations from Stu and Ad. It’s a great chat, and a must listen if you want to feel like a true Pod Bible disciple. Listen here >>

Have you heard the Have You Heard George’s Podcast podcast? If the answer is ‘yes’, you should definitely have a listen to this episode. And I don’t just say that because I really wanted to write that sentence to confuse you. Adam’s conversation with George the Poet was one of the first ones recorded during the first COVID lockdown in March 2020. It was really interesting to hear how the lockdown isolation mirrored George’s creative process. Listen here >>

Pod Bible, both magazine and podcast, are here to give you a chance to hear from your favourite podcasters while also introducing you to people and podcasts you may not be aware of yet. This recent episode did that for me perfectly. It prompted me to finally listen to The Log Books, which had been in my queue since its British Podcast Awards success. AND then after listening to The Log Books, and loving it, I immediately subscribed to Tash’s recommendations. Listen here >>

This episode is very different to the rest of the podcast back-catalogue, but it is also one of the most important. Following the death of George Floyd and subsequent centring of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, the team at Pod Bible contemplated their role and responsibility to help bring change. Pod Bible Founder, Scroobius Pip, and my predecessor, Jordan Rizzieri, had a conversation about the Pod Bible Pledge, and the importance of reaching out to underrepresented communities to spotlight their work. It’s a pledge I fully agree with. Listen here >>
The Pod Bible Podcast is the podcast podcast where podcasters talk to podcasters about podcasts and podcasting. Does it get anymore meta? The Pod Bible Podcast back-catalogue is available here on the website, on Acast, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and all good podcast outlets!

Dan, Scott, Ross, Colin, James and Drummond, the actors behind The Danger Club…
We’re a bunch of actors from London who wanted to relive the days we spent playing Dungeons and Dragons, so we grabbed our dice, built a studio and started recording. It’s an improvised story about 5 heroes who would otherwise be lost that find each other and make one hell of a team on a quest to save the world. But it’s also a real story about six mates doing weird voices and having fun.
The Ricky Gervais podcast, and the Frongpants Network back in the mid 00s. Scott Johnson was doing stuff in terms of niche shows but with professional production that was ahead of its time back then.
We started playing D&D after gigs in pubs around London, after a while friends started asking to come and listen, then strangers started asking too. We decided that it had an audience, and people liked hearing what we did, so here we are!
It tends to be non-gaming podcasts more than anything. In terms of style we try to be our own thing. Anything where there’s laughter and drama and there’s been some love put into making it.
We had Jessica Fostekew on the show and that was so much fun. She’s an old mate from the comedy circuit and Hoovering is one of our favourite podcasts so we’d been trying for years to get her on the DCP. It worked out great, her character had a fight with a pencil, there was an evil calzone, we had fun.
Remembering the fun of it, and persevering. It can be easy for it to feel like it’s just a job when you’ve got editing, social media, booking guests etc. But then we sit down to record and it’s just six best friends having fun telling stories and all the stress melts away. If you can hold on to that then you can do anything.
Episode 21, Carpe DM. It’s the end of the first story arc and pure danger club fun, taking us into a very good string of episodes after. You can absolutely start from episode 1 though. It’s all one story. Also in episode 33 we fight a post office!

]]>The post Top 5 episodes – Daddy Look At Me appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>It takes a certain type of person to work in showbiz, and quite often they can be spotted at a young age, getting up on stage, standing in the limelight and shouting “Daddy, look at me!”. The Daddy Look At Me podcast is crammed full of these people. Each episode, famous comedy guests share their stories of childhood tantrums, traumas and blatant exhibitionism on the road to fame. Now in its fourth series, we asked hosts ‘Daddy’ Rosie and ‘Baby’ Helen to tell us pick their favourite 5 episodes for new listeners to dive into.

‘Daddy’ Rosie Jones and ‘Baby’ Helen Bauer, hosts of the Daddy Look at Me Podcast
Series three got off to an absolute corker when we chatted to star of, er, EVERYTHING, Romesh Ranganathan. We love this episode, and we hope you do too. It’s very jam-sandwich heavy and Rom tells us what it was like growing up as a chubby baby boy in Crawley.
Listen to this episode now on Acast, Spotify or Apple podcasts.
Jayde is one of our HEROES in comedy, and this episode from series three was such good fun. We chat about roller discoes and being a big show-off in Bristol. We love Jayde so much and you will too!
Listen to this episode on Acast, Spotify and Apple.
Ed was one of our first ever guests on the podcast and the boy did not disappoint. We loved chatting to him about what it was like to be a moody rocker, and how he became the fresh-faced comedy lad we know and love today.
Listen to this episode on Acast, Spotify or Apple podcasts.
This is also a throwback to our first season, when we interviewed one of our best friends in comedy, Mock The Week star Maisie Adam. She tells us about her less-than-successful attempt to pick up boys through the medium of dance, and her starring role in the school nativity as…the wise man’s wife.
Listen to the episode on Acast, Spotify or Apple podcasts.
Married sweethearts Rachel and Marcus joined us for the first episode of season four, our latest season, and taught us that opposites DO attract. While little Rachel was learning the piano and being an all-round star student, Marcus was leading a team of little comrades across a very busy dual carriageway, and setting fire to goalposts. This is a blazing hot episode!

]]>The post Top 5 episodes – Rule Not The Exception appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>Now in its second season, Rule Not The Exception is the inclusive podcast with exclusive guests. Hosts, Sagar Radia and Amrita Acharia talk through a collection of experiences and views from friends and peers in the creative arts and beyond. We asked them to take us through their five favourite episodes.

Mandip just brings a natural energy to any room she’s in. She doesn’t take herself too seriously, and I’m sure she can bring a smile to anyone’s face! Having worked with her on The Good Karma Hospital we already had a short-hand with Mandip, but she was great at taking that to another level when we would go off on completely random tangents! I think what made this episode great was her candid honesty and genuine laughter. Sometimes questions in interviews can feel a little formulaic and answers are a little guarded, or “planned” and for our podcast we really try to find a way into the core of a person and a relatability, which this episode is a fantastic example of. “Being yourself” is a phrase that gets bandied around left right and centre these days, but we definitely feel you get a slice of Mandip as ‘herself’ and no one else in our chat together. Listen now.
Elliot is the real deal. He acts. He writes. He directs. And that’s only the stuff we do know! His love for stories and attention to detail in our conversation was absolutely captivating. Elliot is an incredibly passionate person and that shone through in our chat when he delved deep about some of his early struggles getting into the entertainment industry. I think this one stuck out for us because he laid it all out in the studio. He could have chosen to shut down certain topics but chose to share honest experiences, and saw it as a responsibility to say his part. It resulted in a raw, and in places painful, but incredibly powerful talk that resonated with a lot of people. Listen now.

Moyo is literally a force of nature and despite it being lockdown she’d been so busy with creating projects that we had to pin her down for an hour in the studio! By the time series 2 was mid-way through recording, the Black Lives Matter movement had dominated the headlines, and as a black woman in the creative industry, Moyo has no qualms about speaking out and pushing the conversation to change the lack of representation not just in front of and behind the cameras, but also in the education system. Moyo has a drive and a tenacity that is infectious and this chat really unveils her intelligent, business-like, and yet hands down creative to the core attitude to carving out the career she wants for herself. Listen now.
Naroop’s drive and determination to achieve his dreams is something he’s been passionate about since the first day I met him. Not one to mince his words or apologise for his hunger for more, this chat is a brilliant insight into a no-excuses mentality, and a taste of talent meeting opportunity in creating your own luck. With no format training as a photographer his get-up-and-go attitude made for a conversation that I feel people can be inspired by in any line of work. Listen now.
Russell Tovey is a staple name in the entertainment industry and was actually a huge reason we started this podcast! Russell has an innate confidence and belief that anything is possible. From acting, to writing, also podcast hosting, Russell has shown you can be a multi-hyphenate and enhance your skillset in various fields. This was a chat we were planning for a while, so we were lucky to get him days before the second lockdown began! I think in our conversation with Russell you can learn about his love of acting, some key roles he missed out on, and how networking can open doors for you without even realising! Subscribe now to listen when this episode is released.

]]>The Architecture is Political Podcast is a platform for black and brown folks to discuss architecture and the built environment. Here are five stand out episodes for you to check out:

#BlackInArchitecture
Black In Architecture is a hashtag to amplify the voices of Black/Black British architectural professionals and students in the UK. It is also a black-led research initiative, proposing a new approach to achieving racial justice and ending structural racism and inequity in architecture. This is a start in defining the changes that we, as black people, want to demand in architecture and across the various dimensions of the profession – in education, practice, recruitment, professional memberships, regulatory bodies, media, events, to name a few. Listen now.

Muslim Women in Architecture
Muslim Women in Architecture (MWA) is a network and collective working to empower, inspire and celebrate Muslim women in the architecture and built environment industry. Tahin Khan, Zahra Mansoor and Rim Kalsoum formed MWA as it aims to provide a platform to not only support Muslim girls and women who want to pursue a career in the field, but to encourage an open discussion amongst those within the profession and outside.

MONEY. POWER. LAND. SOLIDARITY.

Listening figures have grown rapidly and now exceed a million each month (1.125 million live listens and on-demand downloads*)
In July alone FUBAR’s live podcasts were featured in 181 press articles, from the Daily Mail to Page Six, reaching 22 million people** and these articles regularly feature video excerpts from live shows.
FUBAR has already recorded over 7,000 hours of original programming with no commercial breaks, news, weather or travel bulletins and in 2021 they plan to expand their schedule to feature up to 20 genre-specific live podcasts. They’ve pioneered the use of social influencers as hosts, featuring shows covering celebrity news, politics, sexual health, music, comedy, LGBT+ and much more. Here are a few highlights to check out.

This show sets guests’ devices to random shuffle to find out. With guests including Rick Edwards, Lembit Opik, Joel Dommett, Angela Barnes, Mike Wozniak and Rob Deering, few can stand the pressure of the random shuffle setting that reveals musical taste and a whole lot more about the guests themselves. ]]>The post Top 5 episodes – Reel Feedback appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>Reel Feedback started when host Kevin Dawson hit forty and decided to embark on a new creative endeavour. He already had a love of the format but had never heard a podcast that spoke in detail with the unknown names from the TV, film and music industries. Editors, producers and make-up artists have a huge wealth of information, both technical and anecdotal, that anyone who loves sound and screen would love to hear. Here are five episodes we’d love you to check out…
Terry Ackland-Snow The Art Director invited Kevin to the infamous Pinewood Studios to talk in depth about his incredible body of work on movies like Tim Burton’s Batman, Labyrinth and Aliens. The anecdotes come thick and fast as Terry talks being on the hedonistic, wild set of Tommy, taking James Cameron to Heathrow Airport to find a suitable Alien smashing vehicle and casually mentioning working weekends with Kubrick on 2001 to help build the lead character’s space pod. Humble, modest and engaging, Terry was Kevin’s first guest to work on such beloved, well-known movies.
Adrian Bushby The Grammy-winning engineer/producer’s career has been colourful, and he talks about it in ear-pleasing, often profane (once he finds out he’s allowed to swear) detail. Hear how he convinced Dave Grohl he was the man for the job which then resulted in his first Grammy win, working in close quarters with Muse and any Spice Girls story that starts ‘I’m not sure if I should tell this one’ will always be good. (Whisper) he tells it.
Christine Blundell Another Oscar-winner, this time for her make-up artistry on Mike Lee’s Topsy-Turvy. As well as all of Mike’s other films, she has also put her skills to Wonder Woman and Sunshine. Recorded at another home location, Christine spoke with Kevin in her kitchen, which was also the spot where she aided Benedict Cumberbatch in breaking a clause in his BBC contract. Other tales include how as a new mum, she had to ignore Brad Pitt calling after her at the Oscars to pump breast milk and working on the wonderful Paddington set.
Jon McCoy Kevin’s personal favourite episode is his talk with the Concept Artist for Blade Runner 2049, Avengers: Age of Ultron and most of the recent Star Wars flicks. He talks about his path into the industry and his work on World War Z (that big zombie pile up the wall was his idea), Tom Cruise’s exo-suit in Edge of Tomorrow and, alongside director Gareth Edwards, his work in creating that Darth Vader scene in Rogue One. He then tops up Kevin’s envy even more by revealing that he watched it being filmed.
Geoff Pesche Abbey Road Studios has been a mecca to many for years, but what about the staff behind the scenes? Mastering Engineer Geoff has kept the seat warm in his room at the studio for over a decade, and has worked his final polish magic for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Black Sabbath and Ed Sheeran. An absolute pulls-no-punches guy, Kevin warmed to Geoff in seconds with his affable nature, hilarious, honest tales of his time working on classics like New Order’s Blue Monday and Pulp’s Different Class, before merrily revealing the new Coldplay album, title and all (at the time unannounced).
Reel Feedback is relaunching big with a new season on October 23rd, the new format will incorporate familiar names from the industries as well as those behind-the-scenes. Already lined up are American actor/comedian Ben Schwartz (Parks & Recreation, Sonic the Hedgehog), actor/ writer Andy Nyman (Ghost Stories, Judy, Derren Brown) and Grian Chatten, frontman with Irish rockers Fontaines D.C who recently got pipped to the UK No.1 album slot by Taylor Swift. ]]>The post Top 5 episodes – Seen Anything Good Lately? appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>On Seen Anything Good Lately? I ask guest creators to reveal their latest entertainment obsessions. Here are my current top five favourite episodes for you to enjoy!
Ep 5: Woody Allen Woody doesn’t own a computer or a mobile phone – he still types everything, from screenplays to emails (which he hands to a secretary), on the typewriter his Mum bought him for his 16th birthday. So getting an interview with him during lockdown was tough. Initially, I was granted an hour on the old-fashioned telephone landline, but the record quality on these is terrible and, honestly, he’s deaf in one ear, the ear to which he still insists on holding the receiver. He sounded depressed and resigned to never working again – he’d just lost a close friend in his jazz band to the virus. But I managed to persuade him to borrow his wife’s phone and I called him on FaceTime to get a lovely clean feed. It was the first time he’d ever used FaceTime (audio, not video, let’s not get ahead of ourselves) and I got another 30 mins with him and an interview he and I thoroughly enjoyed. He’s a maligned figure these days, of course, but I got a warm picture of him from this interview, how he practices his clarinet along to records, how he watches old movies in bed, his love for televised sports – I even got him to tell me a classic old joke. Listen here.
Ep 10: Venice Film Festival Special I can hardly believe this festival even took place. It feels like a distant dream now, and it felt unreal even while I was there for those first few days of a beautifully warm September, on the Lido over from mainland Venice. It was the only physical film festival to have taken place in the world since lockdown. I’ve been going to that festival for years and it’s always a great start to the awards season for movies. But this year promised a more intimate event even though nobody really reckoned it would actually happen, right up until journalists, TV crews, film makers, a few stars started arriving. And of course we were all in a great spot to see loads of new stuff to recommend, and to share excitedly what we’d all been watching over the summer. I think I managed to get all the garrulous joy of this highly unusual festival into my show with great guests (Stacy Martin, Jim Broadbent, Romola Garai and the great Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino) – it’s a bumper edition and I’m very proud of the work I put into it and how it sounded, to reflect an amazing few days of sunny ‘old normality’ that felt like a breath of fresh air rather than the last gasp of cinema I’d feared it might be. Listen here.
Ep 1: Emma Jane Unsworth What a great guest this author proved to be to start off the whole Seen Anything Good Lately? show. I knew Emma from a few panels we’d done together and knew how warm and witty she could be, but she really brought all of that to the podcast and had prepared beautifully, so her recommendations are top notch and immaculately varied, from buying expensive mustard, to hearing Meryl Streep read an audiobook of Nora Ephron, to the Brene Brown podcasts to the enduring appeal of Parks and Rec. I paired her with the bombshell Hollywood star Alexandra Daddario, who talked about all her favourite romcoms, from screwballs to Julia Roberts, and her 90s car driving jams, so it was a glamorous episode of smart, successful women with just the right energy and spread of recommendations to set the vibe – indeed the benchmark – for the whole series and suggesting to me that I might just have found a format and a podcast that works. Listen here.
Ep 6: Mira Nair and Mark Cousins Dedicating a show to female film makers always feels like you’re crowbarring an issue in, to look good, if you know what I mean? But this came about organically. Mira is certainly one of the best film makers in the world, and also happens to be a woman and it was wonderful to see her take on the huge task of adapting Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy, finding Mira back in India, dealing with families (it opens with a wedding, reminding us of her brilliant Monsoon Wedding, of course) and politics. She’s such a warm and intelligent person and gave me all of that in the interview, talking about the influences she used to make the six-part TV show, and just making the listener want to follow up on so many leads, which is of course the whole idea of the podcast. I still must catch up on the Indian police show she recommended, Paatal Lok. At the same time, the documentary maker Mark Cousins was unleashing his 14-hour doc about women directors, Women Make Film. It’s brilliant, of course, and shines a light on so many forgotten or deliberately overlooked film makers and Mark was on typically smart form, firing off the recommendations for books and music and marginalised women cineastes as well recounting what it was like recording voice overs with Jane Fonda and Tilda Swinton. It’s a very inspiring episode. Listen here.
Ep 3: David Thewlis and Ashley Henry I love this show because of the contrasts. Thewlis is one of my favourite actors and he’s got this dry wit talking about his great career, from getting drunk with Gary Oldman after winning at Cannes, to notching up 100 film appearances to starting out to catch up on every episode of Peep Show and revealing, exclusively, that he’d just finished writing his second novel – he was so excited that he started unveiling the plot. On the same show, I talked to south London jazz musician Ashley Henry, whose album Beautiful Vinyl Hunter I’ve loved and who talked me through some of the tracks (wish we could play more of the music on the podcast!) as he was preparing to play a concert that was streaming through the Royal Albert Hall website that night. He was a bit nervous, but full of fun, and talked about his love of art galleries and why Earth Wind and Fire meant so much to him growing up, plus he turned me on to some great stuff going on on IGTV featuring ‘battles’ between hip-hop turntable legends. I really have picked up some gems of recommendations from my guests over this first series of Seen Anything Good Lately? – I know you will, too. Listen here.

]]>In the beginning there was The Geekly but we soon discovered that we had far too much to talk about and too many interests for one podcast. As a result geek/nerd podcasts was formed, allowing us to pursue what was important to us both individually and collectively.
We have included our current slate of shows and spin-offs below in the hope that we can entertain you with one, but maybe inform and challenge you with another. With content covering a range of topics from niche geek culture to social issues, geek/nerd podcasts offers a little something for everyone.
1. The Geekly #93 – Dark S3 | Doom Patrol 201-203 | The Twilight Zone 202
Join us as we put our years of academia and pop-culture enthusiasm into something fun and light but also insightful and informative. We analyse, review and discuss genre film and television and all the news surrounding it, with as much of an eye on character development and plot momentum as OHHHHMYYYGGOOODDDD moments.
Recent reviews include: Doom Patrol, What We Do in the Shadows, Dispatches From Elsewhere, Dark, The Twilight Zone, Snowpiercer.
2. Podcastaway #5 ft. Ross Chapman
Podcastaway is a monthly show where Jules’s guest picks the nine pieces of electronic media that would keep them sane in a genre fiction inspired isolation situation – which they also choose. Such situations have included a bunker in a post-apocalyptic landscape, the last man alive on a Mars colony base and the classic desert island situation.
Media can include films, tv shows and computer games and through the choices of the guest we get to learn about them and their journey. Episode 5 featured Ross from I Understood That Reference podcast with Episode 6, featuring one of the hosts of Bedknobs and Broomflicks podcast, dropping in the first week of August.
Contact Jules on Twitter if you would like to be a featured guest in 2021.
3. The Leks Files 001: getting the language right
Every month, The Leks Files will discuss one topic, either based on a question someone’s sent, or a subject they’d like to hear about, or maybe even just whatever Leks is obsessed with that month. Some episodes will be serious. Some will be goofy. Some will be somewhere in between. The hope and aim, though, is to inform, entertain, and not get too lecture-y about it.
Leks Drakos is a rogue academic and writer with a doctorate in English Literature and Creative Writing. He specialises primarily in monsters, monstrosity, and representations of the Other in contemporary society. You can follow him on Twitter or visit his website.
4. Vs #2 – Suicide Squad Harley Quinn Vs. B.O.P Harley Quinn
Vs pits two things against each other – what a shock – the caveat is that the two things must have at least a tenuous link.
In episode #1 Space Force and Upload went up against each other as both were created either fully or in part by Greg Daniels. In episode #2 the Harley Quinn of Suicide Squad and the Harley Quinn of Birds of Prey face off in 5 categories. Costume, Script, Fighting Prowess, Character Development and which sequel would we want to see based on where HQ’s story ended.
We discuss the impact of male and female directors, lethal and non lethal fighting methods, comics accurate portrayals compared with more actualised human beings and much more.
If you have any suggestions for future episodes feel free to submit them via DM on Twitter.
5. Q&A with Leks & Jules #2
Not it’s own podcast but we do infrequently answer audience questions. In Q&A #2 we answer six more questions including the most important question we have been asked thus far – If all the actors who ever played Batman were in a fight, as the Batman they played, with all special skills and tools and vehicles that Batman had. Who would win & why?
These sessions are fun and casual but really allow us to flex the geek muscles as we cite examples from all across the fandoms to help with our arguments.
If you have any pop culture, fandom, generally nerdy questions please submit them on Twitter.
The geek/nerd podcasts are available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Acast, and YouTube.

]]>A Dog’s Life delivers highlights of my journey with my first Bull Terrier, Molly. Sharing what I’ve learnt from the people who have changed and are changing our understanding of dogs helps us understand why every dog is extraordinary. It’s a fab to be a part of Podpeople Productions, combining my broadcasting skills and study in holistic health as a nutrition and behaviour expert. A Dog’s Life is fuelling my lifelong passion; it’s a must listen for the dogcentric.
1) Episode One: Rupert Sheldrake on the sixth sense and telepathy between dogs and their owners
Rupert Sheldrake is one of my heroes! He’s known for highlighting how telepathy exists between people, and between dogs and their owners. Having read Rupert’s book Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home 10 years ago, I wanted to share his work and how Rupert proved scientifically how dogs pick up on their owner’s intentions. For example when they’re returning home. Reading Rupert’s books vindicated me as I had experienced so many uncanny moments shared with my first Miniature Bull Terrier, Molly. Despite already sharing radio time with Rupert as a guest on BBC Radio London’s Barking Hour, which I’ve co-hosted for a decade, chatting to Rupert in his library was a bucket list moment!
2) Episode Three: Alternative Vet Lise Hansen on Homeopathy
I’m honoured that Lise Hansen is A Dog’s Life‘s ‘house Vet’. I am a great believer in holistic healthcare and when I was referred to a holistic vet 12 years ago, I never turned back! We continue to embrace the huge toolbox that underpins the more natural, ‘drug free’ approach. Lise highlights so clearly how homeopathy works and the science behind it, which lies in the laws of physics. As Lise says: “If you analyse the chemicals of a CD, it’s just plastic, you have no idea it’s Beethoven or The Beatles!”
3) Episode Four: Dr Claire Guest talking about dogs trained to sniff out COVID-19
Dogs have never been more in the news than during lockdown! Not least when the charity Medical Detection Dogs announced they were training six dogs to sniff out COVID-19. I was honoured to be the first podcast to air this landmark news! I helped launch Medical Detection Dogs in 2008 when a scientific study published in The Lancet revealed that dogs could discriminate the odour of bladder cancer in human urine. This trial, which involved the charity’s first team of super sniffers, launched their work to prove diseases have an odour, which could help in the earlier detection of many cancers and more. By harnessing a dog’s superior olfaction, dogs can be trained to work with people suffering from conditions like diabetes, and alert to life threatening episodes to save lives. With over 300 million scent receptors in their nose, which compares to our five million, the potential of these super sniffers might just save us from ourselves!
4) Episode Nine: I chat to Police Dog Handler Dave Wardell about his dog known as Fabulous Finn
This episode highlights the extraordinary bond that exists between dogs and their owners – it epitomises the adage: ‘one man and his dog”. Dave speaks openly about the horror of being out on a routine ‘shift’ when the criminal they were pursuing stabbed K9 Finn leaving him a breath away from the death. We chat about guilt, which is an emotion that haunts many of us for different reasons. As the best-selling book Fabulous Finn highlights, he survived, but it could easily have been different. This criminal was charged with only a 5-month sentence for his savage actions. Subsequently ,Dave Wardell campaigned for a law called #FinnsLaw, which became legislation that protects all service animals. We also discuss his campaign for #FinnsLawPart2, which, if passed, will increase sentencing for all animal cruelty and neglect cases in line with the crime considering animals as sentient beings rather than simply as property.
5) Episode Ten: Toby Rose founder of The Palm Dog
Focussing on cultural dog-centricities, we talk about dogs in film with cinema journalist and founder of the only canine film awards, the Palm Dog, Toby Rose. Apart from a dog’s potential role in any plot, dogs are the familiar, they represent loyalty. A film is not a film without “man’s best friend”. We highlight the canine cinema legends like Rin Tin Tin, who earned more than Greta Garbo and saved Warner Bros from bankruptcy in the 1930’s. We also cover present canine stars like Uggie from The Artist, and merge film and literature in Copperfield where the dog Gyp reveals as much about Dickens as he does about his owner, Dora Spenlow, in the classic.

]]>We’re always chatting to each other about history. ‘Why did that happen?… was it really that way?’ And as one fantastic story turned up after another we just had to share what we were finding. So History Café was born. Jon has a background in academic history and we both worked for years in TV. So you get stories that are fabulously researched (in Oxford’s best libraries) but it’s easy listening. Our fans say it’s fun – often out-and-out funny – and at the same time it’s thought-provoking, crisp and historically tight. And it’s always new. You will not have heard this material anywhere else.
Who really won the Battle of Britain?
In the summer of 1940 the RAF saved Britain from a German invasion. It’s what Churchill told the public. It’s what most of us think. But the German documents tell a different story. This is a much bigger story than stuffy arguments about how many planes went down on which side. Facing the superiority of the British Royal Navy, the German generals and admirals never come close to a plan for landing an invasion. Cue Herman Göring, head of the Luftwaffe, and his own personal scheme to force Britain to negotiate. What we discover is that Churchill understood most of this, but still told the Brits and the Americans that the Germans were about to invade. So who was bluffing who? What’s extraordinary is that Hitler turns out to be bluffing Stalin and the German commanders are bluffing their Führer. So in the end of all that, who really won?
How Kennedy loses the Cuba Missile Crisis
Everybody knows that President Kennedy brilliantly defused the 1962 Cuba Missile Crisis by holding his nerve. We believed it ourselves, until we came across a memo to Kennedy dated 16 October 1962, Day 2 of the crisis. His own security chiefs state that the new Soviet missiles on Cuba “do not significantly alter the balance of power.” What? Wasn’t Cuba 1962 the closest we’ve ever come to nuclear war? So how does that add up? A whole lot of historical digging later we turn up another reality. Private backchannels, deals and disinformation. Noam Chomsky was right. President Kennedy had chosen “to play Russian Roulette with nuclear missiles.”
Blowing up the Gunpowder Plot
We could never have imagined how involved we’d become in this. As a child each November 5th, Penelope stuffed straw into her father’s old clothes to make a guy for their bonfire. We were perfectly happy with the stories about Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators. But then we realised that all the evidence for the plot was extracted under torture in the Tower of London. So … that leaves us with … no credible evidence. Time to pull up some more chairs and look around the room. We found ourselves in the courts of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I and a whole long history of framing political enemies. All the fingers were now pointing (even at the time) to Robert Cecil, who ran the secret service. Did he have a motive to invent the whole thing? Yup.
World War One: how much was it Britain’s fault?
We can’t help getting a bit emotional about this one. Britain sent its soldiers to war without the approval of the cabinet or of parliament. And that turns out to be a seriously significant reason why 20 million died and 21 million were wounded. This is about the British army thinking that a quick sortie to Flanders, fighting alongside the French to see off the Germans, will restore reputations tarnished after the Boer war. And then there’s the Persian story, and finally the shocking anti-semitism and anti-German hysteria that gripped London’s top civil servants and military. So you thought the First World War started because of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo? Pull up a chair and get yourself a coffee.
Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn: it’s all about the French
We’d grown up with the traditional story that Henry VIII split from the Church in Rome so that he could finally land Anne Boleyn in his bed. And then we read the evidence, published in 2010 that Henry was sleeping with Anne all along. So we thought we’d better take another look. And boy, were we surprised by what we found. It turns out that the French King, Francis I, has much more to do with the campaign to divorce Henry’s Spanish queen, Katharine of Aragon than we ever realised. It’s a world of blackmail, coded messages and sabotaged messengers, sieges and disguises, and outbreaks of malaria. And a star cast, with walk-ons from Barbarossa and Thomas Cromwell. Oh, and a pope who puts his Medici family’s precious city of Florence above the unity of Christendom. Enjoy.

]]>1. Diversity in Law – with Amanda Pinto QC, senior Barrister and Chair of The Bar Council
Coming from an ethnic minority background myself, and being a woman working in law, I can honestly say that I could really resonate with the discussion that I had with Amanda on how the legal profession is working towards making the Bar a more diverse sector to work in. There are not many people from my nationality at the Bar, and neither are their sufficient women at the top levels of the profession, so this episode really gives me hope that the Bar will be more diverse in future years. I guess that it was also refreshing to hear that a legal body is working so hard on making the Bar a diverse place to work.
2. Family Mediation – with senior Barrister & Judge Sarah Cooper
When I first started working in the legal sector, I truly believed that mediation was a waste of time. However, after having experienced with my clients how mediation can work in resolving matters, even in some of the most complex legal matters, I have become a strong believer of mediation. I love this episode because it gives our listeners a free insight into what mediation can be all about, in a way in which they may not be able to get access to elsewhere, without having to pay for it.
3. Domestic Abuse During The Crisis – Parts 1 and 2 – with senior Barrister Freya Rowe
As a direct result of the COVID-19 crisis, the increase in the number of domestic abuse cases have been staggering. This is such real and serious issue to so many people out there, and in these episodes we aim to help people recognise the various forms that domestic abuse that can take, and the number of ways in which you could get immediate help if you are experiencing any form of domestic abuse or if you are witnessing domestic abuse taking place.
4. Divorce Law – Part 1 – with senior Barrister Maria Scotland
Having been through a divorce myself many years ago, and even though I had legal assistance that was very costly, I did not understand most of what was going on in my divorce process at that time. When you look at the statistics that 1 in 3 marriages sadly end in divorce, I think it is so important for both parties to really understand the legal process around divorce, particularly if they are going to try and deal with the process themselves. Having some very basic understanding during the process, can really assist in preventing future problems and issues with what has been agreed, particularly relating to child arrangements, the finances of the marriage, the financial settlement, and with child and spousal maintenance that you may be paying or that you may be receiving. Understanding the process and getting it right whilst you are going through it, could even assist in keeping your assets and property safe and in your hands in years to come.
5. Motoring Law – Part 1 – with Barrister Jeremy Rosenberg
This is a really insightful episode that taught me a thing or to whilst recording it! We pass our driving test, and leave the law around motoring in the driver’s learning book behind, never catching up on the laws that govern most of us who use our cars on a regular basis. The 1 minute teaser video on our website for this podcast is also one of my favourite videos.

The vast patches of incandescence spotted by numerous mariners on the oceans at night have for centuries remained a mystery. Floating above the water level like a thick glowing mist for miles in every direction, these rare and utterly beautiful phenomena have been puzzled and pondered over by sailors and scientists alike. We do know that the effect is caused by billions of bioluminescent bacteria, but as Steven Miller, a senior research scientist at Colorado State University says, “there is not concrete evidence of how they form, (or) why they form”.
Working with highly sensitive satellite equipment he believed he had the tools to finally observe and record this spectacle. By matching reports from the captain of steamship Lima, a vessel sailing off the coast of Somalia in 1995, who observed a whitish glow on the horizon – followed by the ship being surrounded by “a field of snow” 15 minutes later – he was able to match the precise time and date of satellite pictures which identified for the first time, a ‘smudge’ of light in the exact same location.
“It was the first confirmed satellite view of a bioluminescent milky sea” he goes on to say, a discovery that has lead to more satellite imaging of sightings of bioluminescence and the beginning of understanding this rare and amazing natural occurrence.
We would love to see a Dinosaur cloned, making Jurassic Park a reality, or perhaps a woolly Mammoth, but with the discovery of fossilized DNA it is extremely unlikely according to Beth Shapiro of the University of California. Beth studies DNA in fossils in order to find out why some ecosystems are more resilient than others. “Dinosaurs are all rocks..” she says “..the only thing we can get DNA from are the things that died more recently than that”. This is because we would need a preserved cell from the extinct animal, and these are impossible to find in anything other than more recently extinct species. Cloning by extracting the nucleus from a preserved cell and inserting it in to the egg of the nearest current species has the theoretical potential, but so far it has not been successful in cloning an extinct organism. What is possible and more exciting for Beth is applying these and other techniques to endangered species where there are real possibilities to help save them from becoming extinct. One technique she is most inspired by is genome editing technology, where a living cell can be manipulated by inserting specific sequences of letters to create stronger DNA codes. She uses the examples of coral where specific attributes of the DNA code in more robust species are being transferred to less successful coral species in order to give them a greater chance of survival.
Well, not strictly wolves, this discovery of African wild dogs (aka painted wolves) singing to each other was made by Nick Lyon, one of the producers of the BBC Dynasties series, whilst on location in Zimbabwe tracking and observing a pack of painted wolves for an episode in the series. Circling the wolves in a helicopter one day he noticed that they were opening their mouths, so he landed the helicopter in order to find out why. On alighting he was greeted by a sound he had never heard before, indeed something he believes nobody before had ever observed from this species – the wolves were singing! Pairs were singing to each other before coupling off, but at certain points the whole pack were singing in unison. The wolves had recently and unexpectedly been made leaderless, which is an unusual situation for them to have been in, so it is thought that possibly it was a response to this. At this point we can only speculate on the reasons for this amazing scenario, but luckily Nick was able to record the sound on his mobile phone, and since then work has begun to try and understand this unusual, never seen before behaviour.

Finding a new species is the dream of most explorers, but to locate a whole new virgin ecosystem became an unbelievable reality for ecologist Julian Bayliss. Using satellite imagery to scour Northern Mozambique he came across a dense forest like area of vegetation in a crater on top of what appeared to be a mountain. On further investigation this mountain (named Mount Lico), turned out to be an inselberg, a sheer piece of non-volcanic rock, and according to the local inhabitants, nobody had ever scaled it in living memory. He embarked on a mission to investigate it further using a drone in order to see over the lip of the crater, and what it captured confirmed all his wildest hopes. When the photos from the drone were recovered and downloaded on to his laptop later it showed that “the whole of the forest was there…it was really the first view of a lost world…”. When an expedition finally took him in to the forest, new species of butterflies, amphibians and mammals were recorded, and scientists are still finding treasures in its undisturbed terrain.
Tim and Pam Fogg are climbing experts who work for the BBC getting people in to very difficult places, often underground. They have been on extensive worldwide cave explorations, one of which took place in complete darkness for 8 continuous days, where they woke up each day to the disconcerting effect of complete silence and total blackout. When they visited the stunning caves of the Northern Borneo rain forests in 2004, where huge limestone tunnels and amphitheatres hide treasures of giant stalactites and stalagmites, they discovered their undisturbed footprints in a passage that they had traversed in 1989 – nobody else had been there since.
These caves are really the last largely unexplored places in the world, comprising their own ecosystems that can include rivers, fish, and wildlife such as snakes, centipedes and cave crickets. Tim says about their expeditions, “We’ve been lucky enough to take a lot of steps that no other human has ever taken and cast light on places that no other human has ever seen and no light has ever been .. and that’s pretty special!!”
