Pod Live is a new Sport Podcast Festival held at Kings Place in London between 8th and 12th February. Organised by The Sports Podcast Group (who launched the Sports Podcast Awards last year), it features live shows from podcasts such as Fighting Talk, Socially Distant Sports Bar, The Cycling Podcast, Morning Kombat, The Race F1 and more.

As the festival draws near, we caught up with Founder, Dylan Pugh, to find out what we can expect at the festival this year…

Dylan Pugh, Sports Podcast Group

It’s nearly festival time! Which shows are you most excited about seeing in this inaugural year?

They’re all going to be great shows obviously, but two in particular stand out for me. We have Morning Kombat, the leading MMA/Boxing podcast in the US and reigning Sports Podcast of the Year, flying over to play their first live show in the UK. They have a huge audience over here, and great guests lined-up, so that will be a great one.

And the FozCast will also be playing their first ever live show too, which is really exciting. I’ve been a huge fan of the way Ben Foster has built his own audience as a content creator – and he’s bloody good at it too! We’re excited for his fans to be able to watch the FozCast live in-person for the first time.

You mentioned some predictions for Sports podcasting in 2022 last time we spoke (more immediate content, the rise of the ex-professional, keeping episodes short and regular) – did we see it all happen?

We definitely saw more ex-athletes launch a podcast this year, from Jonny Wilkinson and Andrew “Beef” Johnston, to Neil Warnock and Chris Kamara. I would expect that trend to continue in 2023, with more current athletes in their prime joining the party.

Any things about 2022 podcasting that surprised you?

We didn’t see as much growth in the live audio space as I was expecting. Facebook flirted with it, but cooled their plans, Twitter Spaces has not been as widely adopted, and Spotify’s plans with Greenroom are yet to materialise at scale. In the same space, we saw more live-streaming and watch-alongs from leading sports podcasters – another trend I expect to continue to grow this year. And I was surprised by how quickly the live podcasting scene has not only returned post-Covid, but accelerated at such pace.

What are your predictions for sports podcasting in the next 12 months?

More current athletes in their prime to enter the game as podcasters, more sports podcasts going live and on tour, and in general, I think we’ll see some more variation in the types of podcast being created – niche topics and different formats. There’s clearly a formula that works for sports podcasting at the moment and I can see why people are sticking to that, but my opinion is that there’s now a lot of repetition. Those that do something different to the norm will cut through

Both the audio industry and the sports industry have a big gender disparity – do you think podcasts could help to engage these audiences?

Absolutely. There’s huge momentum around women’s sport right now and the growth trajectory is significant. To my earlier point, the sports podcast landscape is very ‘samey’ in terms of the format and profile of the hosts – and the gender disparity is shocking. So as women’s sport continues to grow in popularity, there’s a huge opportunity to add some fresh new voices to the space.

There’s already some amazing podcasts such as the No Balls: The Cricket Podcast, The Good, the Scaz & the Rugby and Jill Scott’s Coffee Club, and from our work with the Sports Podcast Awards, we are seeing more female producers out there too, which is great to see.

TV has made big strides in the number of female voices in sport, but these are not the current athletes and top stars themselves. Podcasts can be an amazing platform to showcase their true personalities and to build these characters and role models to inspire the next generation of female sport stars and audio creators.

I would urge anybody that commissions a sports podcast to think about the opportunity here, and the responsibility that we have as an industry to redress this balance.

For those interested in attending a live sports podcast show, how can they get involved with Pod Live?

We have live shows each night from Wednesday 8th to Sunday 12th February at Kings Place in London. There are two shows each night, with four on the Sunday, and tickets can be bought HERE. We have shows covering Rugby, Football, Cycling, F1, Combat Sports and some general sports comedy shows like Fighting Talk and Socially Distant Sports Bar – so something for everyone!

New Events for 2021

For anyone inspired to give podcasting a go themselves, the Podcast Maker Weekend runs from 10th – 12th September and features a raft of industry talent offering invaluable insight into podcast creation, suitable for novices through to experienced broadcasters.

On 11th September, you can watch the world premiere of Highlife Romance, a new romantic comedy-drama by Jacob Roberts-Mensah (DEM TIMES) that follows the budding relationship between Nana Akua, a British-Ghanaian Highlife music enthusiast, and Michael, a Native Ghanaian musician. The live performance will be directed by Jessica Kalissa (director of the Edinburgh Fringe play Queens of Sheba).

There are also free, unticketed watch parties for special London Podcast Festival editions of huge US podcasts, streaming live from the States. Cosy up in the LPF Podcast Lounge (complete with comfy sofas and a bar) and watch live editions of shows such as Stop Podcasting Yourself and Judge John Hodgman. Those who can’t make it to Kings Place can also stream the shows live via Kings Place’s KPlayer.

Curated Days

As well as specials and live shows of many popular podcasts, there will also be curated days.

The 5th September is a special Audio Drama Day from Ella Watts and Felix Trench, including live shows from the likes of award-winning sitcom Wooden Overcoats  and horror/fantasy The Silt Verses. There will also be panels with the leading lights in audio fiction and listening posts to hear world premieres of brand new podcasts.

On 12th September, Content Is Queen founder (and Pod Bible columnist) Imriel Morgan curates a full day of essential new voices in British podcasting – including the World Premiere of a new comedy fiction podcast Epic Fun Land (from the team behind the award-nominated Scoop McDoolie); a special live edition of Hajar J. PODCAST DAY Online is just around the corner so we spoke to the team at Radiodays Europe to find out more about the event and ask about their love for podcasts!

First off, can you tell us about your event?
Our event is called PODCAST DAY Online, it is our first virtual event but our 4th podcast event, the preceding 3 were two in Denmark and a sell out event in London last year. The event brings together podcasters and those in the business of podcast from all over the world to talk about podcasting.

Why did you decide to start a podcast event in the first place?
We are part of the team who run the hugely successful Radiodays Europe event which is now in it’s 11th year, though it will actually be the 12th year when we get to our postponed event in Lisbon, Portugal on 2-4 May 2021. However, a few years ago it was felt although Radiodays Europe does have podcasting as part of the programme we needed a more focused event to cater for this growing market. We based the first event in Scandinavia as this is where the first Radiodays Europe events were held and there was a feeling of going home. This year was once again going to be in London as it is such a hub of podcasting. Now however due to Covid we have gone on line so we are no longer constrained to one location we are Everywhere!

What are the first podcasts the team ever listened to?
The PODCAST DAY Online team listen to a lot of podcasts, the main genre being football as we have two fanatical football fans on staff. It’s difficult to say what the first podcast was that we listened too but the first speaker at that event was Eric Diehn, CEO of Midroll, Stitcher and Earwolf, USA and the first podcaster who stepped on the stage for Podcast Day 2017 was Helen Zaltzman of Answer me this! and The Allusionist the ‘Queen of Podcast’ from the UK! We started as we meant to go on and have with the best speakers!

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?
Right now we are taking inspiration from the many podcasters and podcasts that have popped up during the Covid crisis. We are passionate about the role podcasters and podcasts have played during this time to provide information, to entertain and much more. Covid has been the crisis of audio with people turning back to the comfort of the spoken word and maybe tuning into podcasts for the first time. All those people out there who have made podcasts about, for and during this crisis are our inspiration – cheesy but we don’t care! And, if you want to check some of them out you can do this on the Coronavirus Radio Ideas Page on Facebook. We ran a competition for Podcasters to submit the best of their content – winners announced soon!

Who’s are you most looking forward to hearing from at this years event?
That would be telling, the list is so ridiculously long and to be honest we are pretty proud of who we have speaking this year – see the list here. We currently have: Ear Hustle, Hunting Warhead, BBC Coronavirus, The Comb, Washington d’ici, Radio Sodoma, Germany 3000 (winners of the German podcast awards), winners of the British Podcast Awards and many more on stage! #Excited.com – that’s us not a new podcast.

Washington d’ici

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far from running a podcast event?
Take nothing for granted, be fast to react, don’t sweat the small stuff, keep going no matter what and keep listening to podcasts – or were those just our lessons for life in general, who knows but they work 🙂

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?
