In every issue of the Pod Bible magazine, we ask a podcast disciple five questions about their love for podcasts and podcasting. Back in Issue #013 we heard from TV presenter and DJ Alex Zane…

PB: WHY DO YOU LOVE PODCASTS?

AZ: I love the authenticity of them, the best podcasts for me are when you feel like you’re genuinely listening in to a conversation between friends, almost eavesdropping as opposed to being spoken to directly by the hosts. When you get the feel that a podcast has been overly edited for me it loses that naturalism that I think the very best podcasts have. Also, there’s no other medium that allows such a wealth of information to be dispensed to the listener in such an entertaining fashion. The fact that podcasts are these longform chats between people who know their subject matter inside out for the most part, makes them incredibly

WHAT WAS THE FIRST PODCAST YOU EVER LISTENED TO?

Is it bad that it was one of my own!? I mean, this was years ago, and it wasn’t even called a podcast despite being exactly that. It had the snappy title of Mars Planets MySpace Radio. That should give you an idea of how old it is seeing as Mars Planets don’t exist anymore. Neither does MySpace really. I hosted a podcast with a different MySpace user each week and we played out the best tracks from unsigned bands on MySpace. Anyway, I listened to that in around 2006 which I think factually makes it the first.

WHICH PODCASTER MAKES YOU LAUGH THE MOST?

I love Wrestle Me, the podcast hosted by Marc Haynes and Pete Donaldson. I’m not even a massive wrestling fan but the two of them together are brilliant and I find the journey through the history of all the Wrestlemanias and Marc’s knowledge of the sport ridiculously entertaining.

WHICH PODCAST HAS EDUCATED YOU THE MOST?

As a writer I find John August and Craig Mazin’s Scriptnotes a really useful podcast. They offer some great analysis of different genres of film and TV as well as giving their insight into the industry itself. So yeah, I’d say that’s probably educated me the most, especially when I started writing. Also, I don’t think anyone knows as much about Bond as John Rain on SmershPod, so in terms of an education in 007, that show is a must.

CAN YOU RECOMMEND A SHOW OUR READERS MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF?

I really enjoy Friends With Friends, where Dave Cribb and Pete Allison are going through and analysing every Friends episode is great fun. Also, the eternally affable Tom Price does My Mate Bought A Toaster, where he interviews guests based on their Amazon purchase history is a lovely listen.

What’s been the game-changer moment for you?

knew I’d hit a nerve when out of the blue in the same week I was approached for an interview by the independent, and the brilliant writer and journalist Nell Frizzell wrote a column inspired by it. It’s an exciting thing when you feel like you’ve created something that people want to join in with.

What does the next 12 months hold?

We’re doing live shows at the London Podcast Festival in September and a crossover show with the Guilty Feminist at the Soho Theatre in August. Also I really want to do some merch. I’m a big fan of niche merch (is that weird?).

Why did you move Auddy?

It has a properly supportive indie boutique vibe, not to mention the opportunities for cross promotion were really appealing. Twiggy? Yes please

The second podcast in the spotlight this issue was a show from Annabel Rivkin and Emilie McMeekan of The Midult…

How would you describe your show in 5 words?

The glamour and indignity of being grown-up – that’s six sorry.

What’s been the game-changer moment for you?

Lockdown; we found ourselves on opposite sides of the country, so we just used our Zoom and our phones and started recording all the unfiltered weirdness in our heads. We really got to know our audience, and they really got to know us.

What episodes should we watch out for? Why?

There’s a corker coming up with Anna Richardson (host of Naked Attraction and the host of it Can’t Just Be Me podcast) about bodies, attraction and of course, Ozempic

What does the next 12 months hold?

We have just launched a five-minute-ish podshot called Podcast from the Edge that goes out every Friday and we’re working on something for telly.

Two men having a chat is hardly a new trend in the world of podcasting, but when the men involved share humour, vulnerability and an undying love for each other then you’re probably on to a winner. For issue #020 we spoke to two of the sweetest souls in podcasting, Romesh Ranganathan & Tom Davis from Wolf and Owl!

PB: TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR SHOW! WHAT’S YOUR PODCAST ELEVATOR PITCH?

TOM: Two buddies chatting nonsense for an hour each week, join us, you might just learn something about the World and maybe, about yourself.

WHY PODCASTING? WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE FORMAT THAT APPEALED TO YOU?

TOM: There’s a feeling of freedom in working in a medium on a show that can go just about anywhere. For me the chance to spend time connecting, bonding and butting heads with one of my best mates and finest comedy minds in the game never feels like work, it’s a pure joy.

Tom Davis from Wolf And Owl

THE VAST MAJORITY OF YOUR SHOWS HAVE BEEN RECORDED REMOTELY OVER THE INTERNET. WHAT HAVE BEEN THE PROS AND CONS TO RECORDING THAT WAY?

ROMESH: The main thing about podcasting remotely is you know you can do it anywhere, but you definitely notice a better connection face to face. Tom’s wi-fi is also a fucking shambles.

TOM: Recording remotely has been a blessing as it suits both of ours schedules, it’s all we’ve known aside one episode in the flesh. Bad wifi signals are always a kick in the crutch and can butcher the flow. I do look forward to a time when we sit across from one another, in the flesh, a touch away, and we make sweet pod together.

YOU OFTEN RECEIVE PRAISE FOR GIVING GREAT ADVICE TO YOUR LISTENERS, BUT WHAT’S THE WORST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE GIVEN SO FAR?

TOM: Hardest thing about giving advice is that you seldom see the outcome, it’s like missing the second half of a film. I like the thought that all our advice and musings have helped those who’ve reached out, who knows, you can only hope.

ROMESH: I told somebody to not feel bad about challenging some rude behaviour to a woman, and although he shouldn’t feel bad I should have been clearer that men should challenge that shit whenever we can.

Romesh Ranganathan from Wolf And Owl

DO YOU THINK YOUR RELATIONSHIP HAS CHANGED SINCE STARTING THE PODCAST?

TOM: Massively so, I think it’s grown into something pretty special, like a first love, a childhood sweet heart you share a heart pendant with. Sometimes late at night, I’ll think about a life without Rom, the bookish Owl flying no longer alongside my renegade Wolf, it’s always too much to even contemplate, so I fire up my phone and look at pictures of my guy doing wacky things and listen to all the voice notes I’ve saved from him… The darkness ends.

ROMESH: Tom is one of my favourite people in the whole world. I love him and the podcast is testament to how tight the friendship is. Although if I got the call up to parenting hell I’d f**k this off straight away.

WHAT OTHER PODCASTS ARE YOU ENJOYING AT THE MOMENT?

TOM: I’m a fan of the big hitters Off Menu and Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe’s Parenting Hell. I love 2 Bears, 1 Cave and shout out my G The Blindboy Podcast.

ROMESH: I’ve been listening to the Sweet Bobby podcast which is a catfish story of the maddest order. I also dip into What’s Upset You Now? with Seann Walsh and Paul McCaffrey.

FINALLY, TOM, WOULD YOU DO US THE PLEASURE OF ENDING THIS INTERVIEW LIKE YOU END THE PODCAST? WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY TO OUR READERS?

TOM: What is a podcast? Well friend it’s a many layered onion or soap opera like Neighbours or Emmerdale, full of such wonderful characters, it’s a world reaching out to be heard, it’s a stranger saying hello sit with me I have a story a tell, it’s a meal you’ve never dared try nae taste that has you smacking your lips in anticipation. It can be almost and just about anything and that is what makes a podcast just about the most special gift you could give not just someone else, but give yourself.

Whether it’s on the pitch, in front of a camera or behind a microphone, Ian Wright has always been a bundle of enthusiasm. We caught up with the Wrighty’s House host for Issue #019 to discuss his passion for podcasting and the joy of elevating others.

PB: TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR SHOW! WHAT’S YOUR PODCAST ELEVATOR PITCH?

IW: Wrighty’s House is a safe place where a group of friends come together and talk about football in a very inclusive and positive way. It’s my yard! It’s the place where the WhatsApp group comes to life.

We have some real family, non-football talk as well. It’s a group of people that have become very close, care about each other a lot and who also have a passion for the game. It’s everything from stories of my playing days to discussing the vibes of our favourite players and managers, harder hitting stuff (when needed to be done) and real life as well.

It’s me and the beautiful family that is Ryan and Musa from Stadio, Carl Anka, Jeanette Kwayke, Flo Lloyd-Hughes and Mayowa Quadri.

WHY PODCASTING? WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE FORMAT THAT APPEALED TO YOU?

I am a radio guy. I grew up listening to the radio when I was younger and many people won’t remember, but it was radio that you could say saved my post-playing career. When I left the BBC, and no TV broadcaster would even consider me, it was Absolute Radio that gave me a platform to fall back in love with football media.

Radio really supported me. Podcasting feels a lot like radio and is accessible too. It allows me to speak directly to the listener in a way I want to. For someone like me, that can be emotional and can be forthright, podcasting – especially on Wrighty’s House – is a really safe space for me to be me. We can own the narrative and build a real community. It’s not scheduled or programmed. It literally feels like an everyday conversation.

The free nature of it all just works for me and how I want to speak about myself and about football. There is no pressure to cover certain topics because they are in the news cycle – something that I still have to do on a lot of platforms.

Wrightys House

YOU HAVE A ROTATING CAST OF GUESTS ON WRIGHTY’S HOUSE EACH WEEK, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THAT FORMAT?

The cast is rotating because I just love hearing different thoughts on football from different people. Also, you don’t always have the same people coming to your house right? One week you may have your sister come over, the next week it might be your cousin who you haven’t seen in a few months. Wrighty’s House is the same but football.

You may hear poetry in motion from Musa, alternative theory from Ryan, Championship and WSL breakdown from Flo, Olympic tales from Jeanette, xG explanations from Carl and Twitter breakdowns from Mayowa. Everyone has their certain niche, yet we all gel together and can move through different gears whenever we want.

Having different people just allows for us to touch on so much. I learn so much from them all and I think the audience love that too. I never wanted it to be just about me, I wanted it to be about us. And, one of my favourite things about the House, and having these people involved, is that there is something for everyone. Old or young. Expert or novice.

TOWARDS THE END OF LAST YEAR YOU DID A LIVE SHOW WITH CHELSEA WOMEN’S MANAGER EMMA HAYES. IS THIS SOMETHING YOU’D LIKE TO DO MORE OF?

For sure! Live shows are a real experience. The House is an experience already but bringing it to life is something even further. The great thing about live shows is that you can give listeners access to people and conversation that they love, but in a very different way. It’s not the same as the normal weekly shows, but the core ingredients of them are still there. Kinda like listening to a live album of artists you like.

My connection with every member of Wrighty’s House is real. I know them, their parents, their families, their partners and I feel that automatic bond with our listeners. We have some incredible listeners that are part of our community that engage with us on that same level of family.

Everyone knows Emma is an elite coach and one of best football minds in the world but in that live show, they saw Emma the way I see Emma away from the cameras. A footballing mind who is incredibly funny. The jokes and insights were amazing, it was as though she was a long-time member of the Wrighty’s House family.

I’ve just always felt that in those sorts of environments, you are able to really get to know people. We are more than our jobs. So when you come to the House, you are you. Emma was Emma. Not only Emma Hayes the Chelsea manager.

I can’t wait to do the same with future live show guests. We did our first Wrighty’s House Live with Barclays in November last year and it felt really good being in a room full of people while we had a chat over some drinks.

YOUR OTHER SHOW IAN WRIGHT’S EVERYDAY PEOPLE TOOK YOU AWAY FROM FOOTBALL TO FOCUS ON PEOPLE FROM OTHER WALKS OF LIFE. WHAT WAS THE APPEAL OF WORKING ON THAT PROJECT?

When I did my Desert Island Discs, I received so many comments about my growing up story. People were calling me a hero, saying how much my story moved them and how inspired they were by it. It made me think about all the amazing people doing incredible things every day in society whose stories we never hear so that’s what I wanted to do, amplify those stories. Like I experienced with my teacher Mr Pigden, an ordinary man that changed my life, the series looks at a range of amazing people doing incredible things, from Andy Hider who fostered 150 children throughout her life to Munira Mahmoud who supplied hot meals to survivors of Grenfell. Each episode is emotional but inspiring and completely different to anything I’ve done before.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO EMULATE YOUR SUCCESS BEHIND A MICROPHONE?

It is really important to own who you are. I could not do this if I tried to be someone else. I like having fun. I like telling stories. I love talking about football from my point of view. But I also speak how I speak and that is something that took me a long time to truly own, I remember getting criticised by viewers for some of my pronunciation.

I remember when I started, it was similar to when I had football trials back in the day. Back then, I was playing how I thought people wanted me to play, and my career in the media started similarly. However, as I built experience and confidence I was able to start just be me and grew more comfortable doing so.

The media industry can be very selfish, with everyone looking over their shoulder. You have to find friends in the industry that you can trust. People that will help you develop but also not hold you back because it serves them. You have to find those people and it takes time and you will get some of that wrong. But you learn from your experience and use that to hopefully help others on their journey too.

You also have to love what you do. Wrighty’s House does not feel like a show to me, it is literally a conversation between me and my people and one of the best parts of my week. I think that is a really important factor in its success: doing it because you enjoy it. I go through the rest of my week and I’m constantly thinking how we improve the show or I make a note of something I experienced or thought of that I want to mention on the next episode – you live and breath it because you ultimately love it and you hold yourself to a high standard.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER PODCAST HOSTS OR FOOTBALL PUNDITS THAT YOU TAKE INSPIRATION FROM?

Everyone on the House is a massive inspiration for me. They are incredibly talented and experts in their own right, they also talk about football in very pure and accessible way.

Musa and Ryan have made football more inclusive and a safe place for everyone. I learn from them all the time. They have mastered the art of just capturing people’s minds. You sit there listening and you are like “this is awesome’! As far as hosting goes, you won’t find many better. Every word they say becomes a part of your everyday dictionary.

Emma Hayes inspires me and is great to work with. Her understanding of the game and ability to give that back to the audience in a way that is very easy to understand is something I am always working to improve.

Jamie Carragher is also one of my favourite pundits because he brings football analytics together with a deep understanding of fan culture and how fans feel.

I am very fortunate to work with Kelly Cates – every time I am on with Kelly I learn something different. She has improved me as a pundit and host. She’s incredibly calm and witty, she keeps you on your toes but broadcasting with her is a pleasure.

WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT FAVOURITE PODCASTS?

There are so many podcasts that I really enjoy that have good hosts with a range of styles and there is a new generation that is constantly creating new ways to consume football. I listen and try to support as many of them as I can. Musa and Ryan’s Stadio pod is one never miss along with Arseblog, and I also listen to the boys at Stoppage Time TV, the Goal Diggers girls & Sharky Does Sports. All really authentic football analysis and discussion pods.

I am also still working my way through GIANT which is a football documentary series that just tells some incredible football stories.

Outside of football I’m currently loving Mafia which is a deep look into the American criminal underworld.

Auddy is inspiring and engaging audiences through audio. Supporting creators, creating branded content and private podcasts. They know all about quality podcasts and in their new column for us, they are sharing some of their favourites. From Issue #027, this is Auddy’s Shows Worth Knowing About…

Tea With Twiggy

In Tea With Twiggy, Dame Twiggy reconnects with her friends for a cup of tea and a chat!

How would you describe your show?

Intimate, fun, spectacular, entertaining, rare.

What’s been the game-changer moment for you?

Being discovered and declared as the face of 1966.

What episodes should we watch out for? Why?

I love all of my podcasts equally, it would be impossible to select from my fabulous guests.

What does the next 12 months hold?

More exciting guests… We have an incredible line-up including Earl Charles Spencer, Anita Dobson, David Baddiel and many more, so I hope it’ll be just as inspiring and fun to listen to as it was for me to record. So keep tuned into Tea with Twiggy!

Why did you move Auddy?

Auddy have been champions of the show for a while, so it felt natural that they would be our new home.

The second podcast in the spotlight this issue was a show we’ve spoken to before, Namaste Motherf**kers…

How would you describe your show?

Celebrity, comedy, work & wellbeing collide!

What’s been the game-changer moment for you?

I was 45, had dinner with Joan Rivers and she told me it wasn’t too late to get into stand-up; she was 81.

What episodes should we tune in to?

Deborah Meaden (reveals a couple of things she’s never spoken about before),

Sally Phillips (shared stories of our brilliant autistic boys) & the Rev Richard Coles (mutual love of sausage dogs & I loved the Communards back in the day!)

What does the next 12 months hold?

Well 50+ more podcast episodes, of course, and apart from that: touring, TV and radio, a book and… I’m the face of something I’m not allowed to talk about yet. Stay tuned!

Why did you move Auddy?

They got it! They got me! A tailored, bespoke approach where they actually give a sh*t about the content and its creators.

Chris Hawkins is best know for his work as a DJ for BBC Radio 6 Music, but his own podcast extends this passion for music. In How To DJ, Chris asks guests to pick from a box of 45 random questions. There are anecdotes aplenty, essential do’s & don’ts, as well as gear recommendations, PLUS there’s always an apocalyptic set closer too! We asked Chris to tell us more…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I’m a DJ on BBC Radio 6 Music, fascinated by audio and music. My podcast How To DJ explores the life stories, techniques, minds and experiences of much loved radio and club DJs.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

The Ricky Gervais Show. I loved Ricky, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington on XFM and this felt like bonus extended versions of that brilliant show.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I was fascinated by the one-to-one of radio as a kid and my ambition (other to to play left midfield for Shrewsbury Town) was to be a music radio presenter. I’m lucky – because that’s what I’ve always done – I’ve never had any other job. As such a huge fan of radio as a medium and as such a massive music fan I wanted to create a podcast where I got to ask DJs about their craft. For me, storytelling is key to all audio and I wanted to find a way of getting DJs to tell their inspiring life stories.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

The Boiler Room podcasts are fantastic. I listen to loads of music shows on BBC Sounds and love Lauren Laverne’s Desert Island Discs. I should also mention my wife – Clare Nasir. Clare’s a meteorologist and the Channel 5 weather presenter. She hosts a podcast called Weather Snap. If you like weather, you’ll love it.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

So many of my dream guests have already appeared on How To DJ. From Carl Cox to Tony Blackburn, Fatboy Slim to Greg James and Mark Radcliffe to Jodie Harsh. I’ve been lucky – when we invite guests to come on, they seem to say yes!

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Greg James, Mark Radcliffe and Nicky Horne talk in great detail about the art of radio and from the club DJs, Carl Cox and Jamz Supernova really demonstrate that there are no shortcuts to the top – that hard work really pays off.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

I’m on 6 Music every day!

There are many reasons for starting a podcast, especially when you frequent the creative industries, but actor and award-winning filmmaker Izzy Stevens is delightfully candid as to why she’s created Indie Spunk, the podcast for emerging filmmakers:

IZZY: To be entirely honest, making this podcast was a selfish move on my part. I love to interview and champion the creatives I know & respect, and I dig any excuse to learn from a filmmaker who’s done it their way. But I ultimately followed through because, about a year ago, I realized that I was having similar conversations with many of the wonderful emerging filmmakers I coached and consulted with inside of indie spunk club – my membership platform for filmmakers.

These are directors, producers, writers and actors who are inspired to build an empowered, fulfilling career in the film industry, on their own terms, but just need some kind of blueprint or roadmap to get there. I am a director myself, who’s inspired to build this kind of a career.

I’ve always known I wanted to bring these conversations into a podcast format. I’m excited it’s finally here. My intention is to open up access to film industry insight and dissect how to strategically build a career using your individual creative voice.

Born in Australia and now an honorary American, Izzy has starred in notable series such as Puberty Blues and Underbelly, and many will have seen her in the 2018 sci-fi movie Occupation – she began her career in the entertainment world from an early age and knew exactly the path that she wanted to take.

I started professionally acting at 17 in TV and film, which exposed me to a world of filmmaking that I instantly fell in love with. I wanted to direct. I wanted to learn all of the roles on set. As well as directing, I fancy editing, production design, sound design, producing, and writing. The whole process. It’s an endless rush to collaborate with a team towards a shared creative vision. I intend on making films my whole life, I just love it!

During the pandemic and over the past few years, I’ve built a production company and coaching practice helping upwards of 60 filmmakers go from script to screen, which has taught me a whole lotta delicious wisdom juice about my own career. So came the podcast.

The podcast clearly wants to help emerging filmmakers, why is this so important to Izzy?

When I started out I really wished I had access to mentorship and guidance. Navigating this industry alone can be tough and confusing. There is also so much more I want to learn, and I figured that we can seek these answers together. I love supporting emerging filmmakers because they’re, in my mind, some of the best people I’ve met. Ideas driven, curious, playful, motivated and kind.

I believe the world becomes a more empathetic, cooler place when filmmakers from all walks of life get their stories seen and heard and experienced by an audience. Not just the dominant voices.

Filmmakers are inherently collaborative and want to network, and there is plenty of peer to peer help in the higher levels of the industry, the problem is we need more diversity in those higher level industry roles who will take bets on newer voices.

And Izzy knows that we need diversity in the industry to get new and exciting stories, she’s clear about this…

Hire women, hire queer folks, hire people of color — when our sets are equitable, the stories get better. It’s science proven. You can’t argue with science.

The Indie Spunk podcast has an array of eclectic episodes ranging from interviews with a mentoring tone, to out and out industry advice and guidance. What more can we expect as the episodes roll out?

Much more! So far we’ve had directors, writers, producers and special guests join us on the podcast who’ve worked with Sundance, created festivals such as HollyShorts, written for The Simpsons, and made award-winning films. But it’s only the beginning. I am giddy about what’s to come. We also run filmmaking workshops and events inside indie spunk club.

The podcast is all about you taking action. The best place to start is to surround yourself with a like-minded community, get busy creating from a place of curiosity, and seek guidance. You can listen to the podcast here where we get into it all.

It’s clear Izzy displays an unyielding passion for the arts and film, and the Indie Spunk podcast is part of a much wider project and conversation.

Indie Spunk podcast is an offshoot to my mentorship programs & production company, Indie Spunk, and I see it all continuing to grow as we support more filmmakers and make more films. As a director, I currently have a feature film in development, and I’m in production on a number of short films as a director and producer.

In every issue of the Pod Bible magazine, we ask a podcast disciple five questions about their love form podcasts and podcasting. He’s currently touring the UK paying visits to schools, but “the nation’s PE teacher” Joe Wicks was our Podcast Disciple for Issue #015

PB: WHY DO YOU LOVE PODCASTS?

JW: I love that you can listen to them while doing other things like cooking or when you’re out walking. It gives you the chance to enjoy and learn things without having to be glued to a screen. They can also be really inspiring, especially the interview podcasts that talk to different people who’ve been on incredible journeys.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST PODCAST YOU EVER LISTENED TO?

The first one I got into was probably Desert Island Discs. My Dad used to have it on in the background and I used to get drawn into it. That was before it was a podcast though so on second thought it’s probably How I Built This which has really inspiring interviews with entrepreneurs and business owners. I also listened to My Favourite Murder quite early on as my wife is a big fan. They cover different murder cases and can be quite gruesome but they’re really interesting to listen to.

WHICH PODCASTER MAKES YOU LAUGH THE MOST?

I enjoy listening to some of The Joe Rogan Experience podcasts as he gets some great guests. I mostly check out the shorter clips though as the three hour conversations can be a bit much. The episodes he does with his other comedian friends always crack me up. They’re always winding each other up and it’s like spending time with a group of mates.

WHICH PODCAST HAS EDUCATED YOU THE MOST?

I think I’d have to go for How I Built This again just because they’ve had so many inspiring people on there with incredible stories about how they’ve grown their businesses. That or Business Wars which is another great podcast where they talk about the classic business rivalries like Nike v Adidas, McDonalds v Burger King, Xbox v Playstation, that kind of thing. It’s really fascinating.

CAN YOU RECOMMEND A SHOW OUR READERS MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF?

A lot of people may have heard it as Wondery are a big production company but they do a podcast called Imagined Life, which is really fun. On each episode they guide you through the life of someone really famous but they don’t reveal who it is until the end. So often you’ll go through an episode thinking you know then at the end it turns out to be someone completely different. That’s a great listen and I’d really recommend it.

Shedunnit

In Shedunnit, Caroline Crampton is unravelling the mysteries behind classic detective stories…

How would you describe your show?

Shedunnit is a documentary-style podcast that unravels the mysteries behind classic crime fiction from the “golden age” of detective fiction. Using the novels of writers like Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers as a starting point, I look at the literary and social history that shaped this genre, as well as the real-life cases that inspired it.

What’s been the game-changer moment for you?

When I had Lucy Worley as a guest to talk about Agatha Christie in autumn 2022 – she brought a whole new kind of history-obsessed fan to the show.

What episodes should we watch out for? Why?

I find that the more specific an episode topic is, the more people enjoy it, so in the next few months there are going to be instalments about the role that golf has played in detective fiction, the way that New Zealand writer Ngaio Marsh used the theatre as a setting for whodunnits, and a look at the 1935 trial of Alma Rattenbury, which has inspired lots of crime writers in the last 90-odd years.

Why have you moved to Auddy?

I’m a completely independent podcaster, working out of the walk-in wardrobe off my bedroom, so I don’t have the tools or connections to able to compete for sponsorships with shows from big publishing outfits. The team at Auddy do have all of that expertise, though, and they are able to use it on my behalf.

What are you listening to right now?

I really enjoy the show If Books Could Kill, which is all about debunking those “airport bestseller” non fiction books that everybody apart from me seems to have read.

Speaking of books… Simon Mayo’s Books of the Year was the second podcast in the spotlight this issue. Let’s hand it over to the hosts Simon Mayo and Matt Williams!

Simon Mayos books of the year

How would you describe your show?

It’s a podcast about books.

What’s been the game-changer moment for you?

Never had a game-changing moment but being back in the studio, as opposed to the spare bedroom, was a lovely thing.

What episodes should we watch out for? Why?

*producer note – “Well, they’re ALL good, but international bestseller Harlan Coben is always good value.

What does the next 12 months hold?

Unparalleled success and triumphs are expected.

Why have you moved to Auddy?

They said they’d provide luxury biscuits.

What are you listening to right now?

HBO’s The Last of Us podcast is wonderful, and The News Agents is an essential listen.

It’s hard trying to find time to do anything when you’re on the road. A busy touring schedule, hustling from town to town, city to city, it’s certainly a gruelling business. Thankfully, podcasts have become an accessible medium to help pass the time… so when Franz Ferdinand bassist, Bob Hardy, paired up his love of podcasts with a prior idea about documenting the band’s story, well, it was time to call in podcast producers Stuart Stubbs and Greg Cochrane.

Greg and Stuart both have music journalism backgrounds and an ingrained knowledge of the podcast world. Stuart explains how and why their journey with Franz Ferdinand began:

Stuart: Having worked together on independent music magazine Loud And Quiet for years, myself and Greg launched the production company New Allotment in 2020. We have learned how to make podcasts since 2016 and we wanted to set up a podcast production company that could make shows about artists away from Loud And Quiet editorial. We know Domino, Franz’s record label, really well, and they came to us with news that in 2022 they’d be releasing a greatest hits collection for Franz Ferdinand titled Hits To The Head. They told us about this idea to tell the story of the band in a podcast and asked if we’d be interested in making it. Of course we bit their hand off!

From concept to release, what was the process like? How much research, how much production work, and how did you find the whole process?

Stuart: First and foremost we worked out the format of the show – the best way to tell the story, in how many episodes, will it be narrated, will it feature the interviewer’s voice; big questions that would then inform everything.

We had a brilliant lead researcher in Fergal Kinney who mapped out the story of the band in a document informed by Domino’s press archive, and that then allowed us to work out who we’d interview. We then interviewed all the contributors throughout October, November and December. January was a month dedicated to editing, which was where the actual story telling started. We had 30 odd hours of audio to get down to around 2.5 hours over 4 episodes. We were also writing the narration script as we went, which we knew was going to be recorded by Rose Matafeo once we had everything in place and were happy with the edits.

It really was a mammoth job, which we realised most in the edit. Personally, I found that part really rewarding. It was like a giant puzzle, fitting together the audio we had (of course we had little idea what people were going to say on record beforehand) and making it come alive with the band’s music. Of course it helped that the story itself is so compelling, and that everyone we spoke to were so good at telling it. It was just a joy to be honest. Personally I didn’t stop to think how intimidating it was, which is probably for the best. It was all there for us to slot together, and I think a lot of that came from our early research and planning our episodes and interviews properly.

The response from the podcast world has been significant, how has the audience reaction been, and crucially, what has the band’s feedback been like?

Greg: It was really pleasing to see such an immediate, positive reaction from Franz’s huge energetic international fanbase. Even within the first couple of hours of release seeing comments and listens coming in from every corner of the world. That meant within the first couple of days of release the podcast made its way up the charts, reaching the top of the Apple Podcasts Music chart and featuring highly on others. It’s also been a thrill, a couple of months since release, that people are still coming across the podcast. Because of its evergreen nature we hope it’s a podcast people will come to discover and enjoy for years to come. Rightfully there’s lots of interest from the music community in making podcasts, but I think this was a great example of the right band, a compelling story and the ideal format. We hope to work with other collaborators to do more of it.

Why this podcast – what was it about Franz Ferdinand and their story?

Stuart: It felt like a perfect one for us. Greg and I were both at university when Franz broke, and they really did change British guitar music. Take Me Out charting at 3 after a long period of terrible nu metal and lots of straight up pop being in the charts was really exciting. That was 2003, and even since then not many bands have blown up in that way, so quickly. There’s a lot of appeal in that story alone – what’s it like to be in a band that goes from playing in a friend’s house to opening the Grammys in a year? But beyond that I’ve always been fascinated with what happens after that. How do you keep that going? What’s it like to constantly tour as much as Franz famously have? How does it feel when a member leaves?

I loved hearing about it all, and the band were very open about it, which we were really thankful for. We thought it was important to interview them all separately for that reason. It added to the production time of course, but meant that everyone could speak freely. While editing, I must have listened to the featured songs a thousand times, and yet I still really like them.

As a four part series, how does the podcast break down – with each episode what can we expect to hear and learn?

Stuart: We start in Glasgow with the band forming. Bob and Alex are trying to get a band together when they meet Nick at a party who lies to them in order to join. Nick says he’s a drummer but he really isn’t. There’s a highlight in this episode where Alex retells how he and Nick met having a fight over a bottle of vodka. We’ve also got some rare early recordings and demos in this first episode, as the band talk about their formation, playing gigs at art school house parties and getting interest from the music industry.

Episode two is all about the recording of their debut album, the impact of it and the single Take Me Out, what went into that unusual song and the extremely glamorous world it suddenly thrust the band into. Expect stories of meeting David Bowie and parties in Hollywood.

There was a lot to pack into episode three and the band reached breaking point, resulting in a punch up in Paris, and they recorded two more albums whilst barely taking a breath from world tours. Episode 4 is the band patching themselves up and reinventing themselves for what’s going to come next. Two members leave and three join. It’s a hell of a story really. Like I say, few bands have had the highs of Franz this century. And we hope that in hearing them tell the story people will get a real sense of that time in British music, and just how important Franz Ferdinand’s songs are. It helped, of course, that we had Rose narrating the series, who was the icing on the cake.

It was a sad day when Jon Snow retired from the Channel 4 news team. But now imagine him with even less restriction over what he is allowed to say. Snowcast is a new weekly podcast where, in his own words, Jon will be hosting ‘original thinkers, campaigners, creators, performers and the occasional provocateur.’

Guests so far include The Psychopath Test writer Jon Ronson, Cognitive Neuroscientist Professor Sophie Scott, British-Zimbabwean social media star Munya Chawawa, novelist Robert Harris, and impersonator extraordinaire Armando Iannucci.

From the man who took a 25% gender pay cut, reportedly yelled ‘Fuck the Tories’ at Glastonbury and apparently was tempted to shoot dictator Idi Amin himself, is there anyone else you would rather get your political and social commentary from? Jon kindly took time out from learning how to podcast and launching his new book, The State of Us, to answer a few of our questions.

How would you like listeners to react to the podcast?

I want people to learn something new but I also want them to enjoy themselves while listening. I want a podcast to be worth the investment, the time you’re going to give to it. I want it to be a joy to learn something that you never knew before.

Why podcasting? What is it about the format that appeals to you vs. television?

It’s just you. No director in your ear. When I was working in the news it was: “Three minutes Jon, that’s all you’ve got time for…Ten, nine, eight, seven…”  I want to go on talking…and now you can! I didn’t know podcasting could be so much fun: no clutter, no grumbling. I just want to wallow in the conversation. We get it all and we enjoy it. It’s sensational. And you get to meet people you never thought you would.

Will you be freer to be even more vocal now that you have, in your own words, ‘fewer rules’? What will you be able to say that you perhaps couldn’t previously?

I’m off the leash! No more prying and querying what I’m doing. “Have you seen the lawyer yet? Have you run this by them?”

Before, I spoke to a lawyer every single day. They were always sweeties but there were always things that legally I couldn’t say. Not any more. The great thing about podcasting is that you can say what you like, within reason. And I’d hope that I’m permanently within reason.

Do you have a dream guest for the podcast?

I’d love to interview the King. I hope that, around the Coronation, he’ll do a few interviews. And I’d love to be one of them. That would be wonderful.

Expectations are high for this podcast. What’s that pressure like?

I felt the pressure of learning a new format that I never dreamed of doing before. But I’m really enjoying it.

Have you got any other projects in the pipeline?

My new book has just come out, The State Of Us. Snowcast and the book are keeping me busy right now.

Finally, just how many ties do you have exactly?

I may have over 100 but I’m past counting. And I must start whittling them down.

Actor, writer and comedian Brett Goldstein is having one hell of career climb! The new series of his Emmy Award-winning show Ted Lasso may be starting tomorrow, but to us Brett will always be burying people with their favourite films.  Somewhere between his hit TV show, a new role as a Marvel superhero and a variety of exciting writing projects, we caught up with the Films To Be Buried With host for Issue #023 to chat all about podcasting…

PB: TELL US ABOUT YOUR SHOW! WHAT’S YOUR PODCAST ELEVATOR PITCH?

BG: A guest comes on, I tell them they’ve died, then we discuss their life through the films that meant the most to them. What film scared them the most, made them cry the most etc. At the end they pick the film to go in their coffin and take to heaven. Life, death, movies.

WHY PODCASTING? WHAT WAS IT ABOUT THE FORMAT THAT ATTRACTED YOU?

Podcasts are one of the only mediums you get to have a full, deep, funny and meaningful conversation with someone without interruptions or edits. It’s a privilege to talk to a person for 60-90 minutes straight. We don’t do that enough in real life probably. Without a mic, no one talks anymore!

WHAT‘S THE SECRET TO BEING A GOOD PODCAST HOST?

Make the guest feel welcome and safe, ask good questions, don’t interrupt. Listen more than you talk. Don’t be a xxxx.

SINCE STARTING THE PODCAST YOUR ACTING AND WRITING CAREER HAVE REALLY TAKEN OFF, HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO KEEP THE PODCAST GOING WEEK IN, WEEK OUT?

I don’t know. I should try to sleep sometime. But I would miss the real connection you get with a person in these conversations. If you ask the right questions, people are always fascinating.

YOU’VE HAD SOME INCREDIBLE NAMES ON THE PODCAST, FROM SHARON STONE, TO EDGAR WRIGHT, TO BARRY JENKINS. WHO WERE YOU MOST NERVOUS TO SPEAK TO?

All of the above. I get most nervous of the biggest heroes… I remember being very nervous meeting Brené Brown. I really wanted it to go well. And she was a delight. But one in particular was Mark Frost. Twin Peaks is something that has lived in my subconscious for 30 years so I was very worried about any part of that meeting being a disappointment. In fact, he was even better then I hoped. Though I think you can tell the whole episode is me trying not to say ‘I love you’ for 90 minutes.

…AND WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO INVITE ON WHO HASN’T FEATURED SO FAR?

Martin Scorsese, Sofia Coppola, Greta Gerwig, Steve Martin, my neighbour Maureen (a really hard get as her agent is a power hungry psychopath.)

FINALLY, WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT FAVOURITE PODCASTS AWAY FROM THE WORLD OF FILM?

The Comedian’s Comedian, Cuddle Club, This American Life, and Off Menu.

The star of our October release, Brett Goldstein is also a television star on Apple TV’s Ted Lasso. However, over the past four years of his podcast, Films to be Buried With, he has also become a podcasting darling. So much so that other podcasters want him on their shows! You may have caught up on the show’s backlog, or looked at my personal recommendations of top episodes to listen to, but you may be craving for more Goldstein. That’s where we can help with these suggestions of the best Brett Goldstein podcast appearances.

Menus to be Buried With (2021 AND 2022!)

Ed Gamble and James Acaster – hosts of the hit podcast Off Menu – have appeared in Goldstein’s staple podcast, Films to be Buried With. In these podcast crossovers for Comic Relief, the tables are turned and James and Ed have to choose the meals that best represent their lives before they go to the afterlife. The first special was so good Ed and James were resurrected for a second special in 2022. These episodes bring an abundance of laughter, both for you and from the hosts. Secret Artists

An interview show with a twist. Annie McGrath welcome Brett to choose an object or topic that inspires him, which Annie and Brett then create art about these chosen subjects. The vibe of this one is gentle with soft humour and feels as though you are there with them as they include clutter noises from the equipment and when the host and guest turn away to focus on their art. Secret Artists has guests on the show that are well known in British comedy, including Sophie Duker and Joe Lycett, so this is an excellent gateway into the show. Listen on your podcast app >>

Conversations Against Living Miserably

In partnership with TV channel Dave and the charity Mind, hosts Aaron Gillies and Lauren Pattison invited Brett onto the show to talk about he lives his life without miserably (or so we think). Brett also reflects on his general mood throughout his childhood and the pressure to feel miserable to be a good artist. An honest and frank conversation about mental health sprinkled with a dishy sense of humour, this is a short and sweet episode where you can take a break from the over-produced, loud and glitzy podcasts. The show did finish in 2020 so if you are intrigued by it you won’t be as intimidated by the backlog. Listen on your podcast app >>

Birthday Girls House Party

In this podcast, Brett joins sketch comedy trio, Beattie Edmondson, Camille Ucan, and Rose Johnson to plan the ultimate move night. This show is explosive and exciting with goofy party games played like everyone is fueled by copious amounts of sugar. During this Brett shares about how he may love eating popcorn in a dark room rather than actually watching films, the girls talk about how old the actors are in Grease, and the behind the scenes of filmmaking. The energy between the four podcasters take you back to your school days with the amount of chaos and laughs. Listen on your podcast app >>

Apple Podcasts and Pod Bible partnered up for a series of interviews with creators to share how they use Apple Podcast Subscriptions to connect with their fans. Andy Dawson and Bob Mortimer make up the comedy podcast Athletico Mince. We spoke with Andy to find out how they went from talking football to covering everything from blue drink to nonsense pottery — all while earning more for themselves with subscriptions. You can listen to Athletico Mince on Apple Podcasts.

Athletico Mince hosts

Apple: Tell us a bit about your show and how you came to podcasting.

We fancied doing a football podcast in 2016 because we’re both from the same part of the world and are both ardent fans of the game. Sadly, we quickly realised our footballing opinions were a total waste of breath. The pod morphed into the two of us talking rubbish and doing silly characters, some of which have a vague link to football.

What made you decide to launch a subscription on Apple Podcasts?

We set up a Patreon about three years ago after asking our listeners if there was any demand for an ad-free version of Mince, with early access and bonus stuff chucked in — and thankfully, there was! It made sense to add Club Parsnips (as it’s called) to Apple Podcasts recently because it’s an easy signup for anyone who wants to subscribe.

How has your business model changed as a result of Apple Podcasts Subscriptions?

Subscriptions keep the podcast going. Everyone wants to be paid for their work, and having subscribers means we know there’s a guarantee of some payment each month.

What has surprised you about Apple Podcasts Subscriptions?

The nicest surprise has been on a couple of occasions when we’ve wanted to put an episode out for free at the same time for subscribers and free listeners — we asked the subscribers if they were okay with that, and they overwhelmingly were. They’re a truly lovely bunch!

Where do you see Athletico Mince in a year’s time?

We’ve got no idea where we’ll be in a year, to be honest. We’ll keep bumbling along for as long as it’s fun, and we feel the quality is as high as we want it to be.

Tell us about an episode you’ve worked on that you are most proud of and why?

I always think the turning point was episode 15, My Jambon Hell, where I visited Bob in his French hotel room — the room was full of ham, and he didn’t have a clue what to do with it. That was when the podcast hit a glorious new level, and we never looked back after that. Viva tomatoes!

What kind of advice would you give someone trying to break into the industry?

Try to make the most of the freedom that podcasting allows you. There are no commissioners to please, and you can literally do anything you like, so try to play with that as much as you can. If anyone listens to it, that’s a lovely bonus!

Welcome to 2022 podcast disciples and welcome to the first New This Month article of the year. This is the longest list I’ve done so far – I was betting on January being a slow month for podcast releases, but I was very wrong. The last two months have brought us BBC projects galore, the latest narrative podcast from QCODE, and several new true crime shows – including the newest project from one of the most popular podcasts of all time…

Enjoy!

New Pods

Shattering Gleam
Shattering Gleam

Lots of the best music podcasts take a close look at songs and albums from different viewpoints – whether that is the personal preference of a celebrity, (Soul Music) or the specific nuts and bolts of putting a song together (Song Exploder). Shattering Gleam is slightly different, and perhaps is best described as a culture podcast. Host and music critic Sasha Geffen explores how pop stars have re-shaped gender through music: from Prince’s falsetto to Beyoncé and Britney’s robotic tuning. I like the idea of a playlist of the songs spoken about, but it’s a shame it’s on US-only app Pandora. Listen now >>

The Trojan Horse Affair

The Trojan Horse Affair
This is a big one: this 8-part investigative podcast series jokingly describes itself as an “elaborate student podcast”, but it’s actually the latest project from the team that brought us Serial and S-Town. One night in Birmingham, Brian Reed (the host of S-Town) was approached by ex-doctor and journalism student, Hamza Syed, who wanted help with a story for his Masters degree. He wanted to uncover the truth about the ‘Trojan Horse letter’ that caused the UK government to launch investigations into the supposed ‘radical Islamisation’ of schools in Birmingham in 2014. Despite the fact that this letter was unsigned, undated, incomplete, throughout all the official inquiries and heated speeches in Parliament, no one has ever bothered to answer the basic questions: Where did the letter come from? Who wrote the letter? And why? Brian and Hamza team up to investigate. As might be expected from this production team, this is a gripping and fascinating listen. Listen now >>

Last Known Position

Last Known position

The latest fiction podcast from production company QCODE  follows a privately funded team of experts as they try to find a flight that suddenly vanished over the Pacific Ocean. Last Known Position stars Gina Rodriguez (Jane The Virgin) as submersible pilot Mikaela Soto and James Purefoy (A Discovery of Witches, Rome) as a grieving billionaire. It describes itself as “the next revolution of suspense and terror” and from the trailer voice to the music score, it really feels like a Hollywood production. The sound design is uncannily realistic and this is definitely worth listening to on headphones for the full effect. As somebody that can get jumpy over sounds I’m not expecting, I did appreciate the content warning that “it may seem like sounds are coming from the sides or behind you” – and it still made me jump! Listen now >>

Fake Psychic
Fake Psychic

Another new investigative podcast, this time from the BBC. Vicky Baker looks at the ‘stranger-than-fiction’ story of Lamar Keene, a renowned psychic in America during the 1960s who became known as the Prince of Spiritualists. Then one day, he turned his back on spiritualism, and wrote a memoir where he confessed to being part of an underground network he called the “psychic mafia”. He wanted to blow the whistle on the whole industry. But how much can we trust the revelations of a self-confessed conman? Similar to other recent BBC shows, this mixes documentary with drama – although the drama plays quite like the radio classic The Archers in style.  Listen now >>

Learning From Genocide

Learning From Genocide

Learning From Genocide is a podcast from the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust that comes with a content warning of ‘upsetting stories of genocide and violence’. We hear a number of first-hand accounts from people directly affected by recent genocides. The show starts by looking at the Holocaust and Nazi persecution, and moves onto the more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. All seven episodes of the show were released in January to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day, but I would recommend spreading out your listening so you can fully appreciate each story. Listen now >>

Fairy Meadow

Fairy Meadow

Another new investigation from the BBC, this one looks at a personal tragedy and the repercussions. In 1970, three-year-old Cheryl Grimmer disappeared from Fairy Meadow beach in New South Wales, Australia. This is mostly the story of her older brother, Ricki, who was the one looking after her when she went missing. We hear Ricki talking through his decades-long search for answers, and the emotional impact it had on him. BBC News Correspondent Jon Kay has been investigating the case since 2016, and over eight episodes we get a really exclusive and in-depth podcast. Listen now >>

The Stitch Up, Lonel(i)ness, and In Touch with Ruby Rare…

In touch

This is like three podcasts for the price of one! As part of Broccoli Productions’ Documentaries stream, they’ve released some one-off episodes and a new show, each looking at different topics: In The Stitch Up, Bea Duncan looks at the fashion industry and how it prioritises profits over people and planet; Lonel(i)ness has Jaja Muhammad ask what we mean by loneliness, what causes it, and how we can at least tackle the stigma of ‘lonely’ if we’ll never fully be rid of it; and In Touch with Ruby Rare is a new short series drawing on sex educator Ruby’s own personal and professional experience. Listen now >>

Wild Things: Siegfried & Roy

Wild Things

This has been showing up in many newsletters, and is perhaps already as popular as its subjects. Okay, that’s a slight exaggeration, but Wild Things is one of the new podcast offerings from Apple TV, and is making a splash. It looks at the lives and hidden truths of the illusionists Seigfried & Roy, who performed 30,000 shows for 50 million people and generated well over $1 billion in ticket sales with their animal magic shows, until Roy was attacked on stage by a tiger in 2003. Listen now >>

Other new podcasts for your list:

The Way They Were – Gráinne Maguire and Chantal Feduchin-Pate love discussing their own odd ex’s, but they love remembering weird celebrity couples even more. Each week, they’re joined by a celebrity guest to discuss the celebrity romance they never got over, from Brangelina, to Bennifer, and Mick and Marianne. Listen now >>

Reclaimed & Rewritten – Produced by award-winning publication gal-dem,  this six-part podcast seeks to unearth the mysteries and the stories behind the devastating Tulsa Massacre of 1921. February is Black History Month in the USA, and this is a great way to learn about the state-sponsored massacre, and what actually happened to the community of Deep Greenwood. Listen now >>

Getting My Dad to Say I Love You – Chris Martin (not Coldplay Chris Martin, by comedian Chris Martin) has been inspired by his own relationship with his father to interview guests, including Romesh Ranganathan and Roisin Conaty, to find out what type of relationship they have with their parents. Perhaps it might help Chris to convince his dad to say those three words, “I Love You” too! Listen now >>

Go Love Yourself – Star of the Great British Bake Off Laura Adlington has launched a show that aims to empower people to feel good about themselves and their bodies. Laura and best friend Lauren Smith talk about body image, confidence, and growing up in the age of low-rise jeans, diet culture and Bridget Jones. As well as exploring their own journeys to self-acceptance, the pair give practical advice on caring a lot less about what other people think. Listen now >>

Room 5 – Another BBC production: One afternoon changed everything for Helena Merriman as she was given a shock diagnosis. Now she’s speaking to other people who were changed by a diagnosis. This is an intimate series that uses immersive sound design to help shines a light on misunderstood conditions, and asks how we cope when our bodies and our minds no longer behave as we want them to. Listen now >>

This Is Dating – “Come for the cringe, stay for the connection.” This show from PRX lets you listen in on first dates. What saves this from being really awkward – even exploitative – is the input from a behavioural scientist pre and post-date. Listen now >>

Ghosthoney’s Dream Machine – Social media trailblazer Ghosthoney, aka Tyler Gaca, has made a podcast with a difference. These short narratives describe the magical worlds that occupy Tyler’s dreams. Tyler is also taking listener’s suggestions for stories! Listen now >>

New Seasons:

CHAMELEON – Season 3

Wild Boys

CHAMELEON: Hollywood Con Queen took us through the story of one of the weirdest and wildest scams in history – a supposed major film project, in Indonesia that never existed. Season two, High Rollers, looked at an FBI agent and a group of businesspeople in Las Vegas who all pretended to be money launderers. Now, the con-themed podcast is looking at a story from 2003, when two half-starved young men turned up in a small Canadian town, saying they’d be living in the woods. Listen now >>

Deep Cover – Season 2

Deep Cover Mob Land

Deep Cover is a podcast from Puskin Industries that has a simple premise – it focuses on people who lead double lives. Season two, Mob Land, is back with a brand new podcast cover. It’s 1986, and a high-rolling lawyer named Bob Cooley walks into a federal prosecutor’s office and says that he has information that could bring down the mob… Listen now >>

Human Resources – Season 2

Human Resources cover art

If you’ve heard me on the Pod Bible Podcast,  you’ll know that Human Resources is one of my favourite podcasts. It explores the British involvement in the transatlantic slave trade and how it permeates our society and culture today. Season 2 starts off with a focus on the most British thing imaginable – the Royal Family – and the profits they made from enslaved people. Listen now >>

Asylum Speakers – Season 6

Asylum Speakers

The podcast that used to be called The Worldwide Tribe is back with a new name for the sixth season. In Asylum Speakers, Jaz O’Hara speaks to people with lived experience of displacement, as well as the people working on the front line supporting them. In the first episode of this series we hear from Hassan Akkad, a BAFTA award winning filmmaker, activist and writer from Syria, who chose to work as an NHS hospital cleaner during the worst days of COVID. The two chat after a family meal and the conversation is a really nice insight into his life. I also love the theme music of this podcast! Listen now >>

Out There – ‘Things I Thought I Knew’

Out There

Another of my often recommended podcasts, Out There shares stories that explore big ideas through our relationship with the outdoors. Up until now, the podcast has worked on a rolling basis, but they’ve done something of a re-launch with this themed series. ‘Things I Thought I Knew’ looks at harnessing the power of nature to uncover truths about our humanity and our world. In the first episode, Sarah Dealy tells us about her time in ‘wilderness therapy’. Listen now >>

Other new seasons for your list:

Conflicted – Season 3

This podcast from Message Heard has an ex-Al Qaeda jihadi turned MI6 spy (Aimen Dean) and a former monk turned filmmaker (Thomas Small) looking in depth at some of the most nuanced and complicated aspects of war in the Middle East. The long-awaited third season starts with the continuation of their bonus episode on Afghanistan. Listen now >>

Marvel’s Wastelanders – Season 3

A fictional ‘audio epic’, Wastelanders is the official tie-in podcast that builds on the Marvel universe through audio stories. Season 3 focuses on Black Widow, and is set in New York “almost thirty years after The Day the Villains Won (aka V-Day)”.  Listen now >>

dot com – Season 2

Dot com is the podcast documentary series about the people of the web. After looking at Wikipedia in the first season, dot com: Redditland takes a close look at the social media website that has been called the front page of the internet. Listen now >>
