]]>POD BIBLE: Who are you, what is your podcast called, and what’s it about?
KELLI MARTIN: My name is Kelli Martin. I’m a small business champion at FedEx and co-host of the Making It Work podcast presented by FedEx. We talk with entrepreneurs who dish out real-time insights on running a small business that other entrepreneurs can apply to their business.
PB: Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?
KM: Although we saw there were a million business podcasts out there, they all seemed to be dominated by already successful people who were keen on telling you what to do. We thought there was a gap in the market for an entrepreneur-led podcast, where we debate and discuss a range of tough topics – and we don’t shy away from sensitive stuff. Our tagline is ”Entrepreneurs who tell it like it is”, and that’s exactly what our listeners get!
PB: What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?
KM: Probably a true crime one. I’m a junkie for those. It was probably the first season of Serial by This American Life. I was hooked on them after that! There was something about the story itself, the storytelling of it and the format that really struck me and sucked me in, leaving me wanting more and more each time. Since then I’ve probably listened to every popular one out there.
PB: Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?
KM: Personally I take inspiration from those that provide a great deal of opportunity for personal growth and learning and my normal go-tos are: On Purpose with Jay Shetty, The School of Greatness with Lewis Howes and Unlocking Us with Brené Brown. The guests each of them have on their shows always have at least one great nugget you can takeaway and apply in your life. I can apply much of those learnings in my professional life as well to improve or enhance interactions of my work. There are a lot of great podcasts out there with cool stories, like those in How I Built This and The Tim Ferriss Show. Sometimes I dive into health related ones like The Doctor’s Farmacy with Dr. Mark Hyman or The MindBodyGreen Podcast.
PB: Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?
KM: That’s a really big question. My co-host and I may differ on this but right now I’d have to say because of where I’m at it’d have to be Fred Smith, founder of FedEx. He’s such a visionary to create something like FedEx and grow it to what it has become worldwide when others thought it couldn’t be done. I’d love to tap into his brain on the future of things. Others might be Richard Branson, another brilliant visionary, or Shaquille O’Neal, legendary American basketball player.
PB: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?
KM: That my voice sounds way different than I thought! And really, there is always so much more to learn in the podcasting space. Whether that’s in the recording, engineering/production, interviewing or a format there are always little tweaks that can keep making it, or me, better.
PB: Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?
KM: That’s a really tough question! I can’t have a single favorite, since that would be like choosing your favorite child so I can have a few, right? I think the ones that are really fantastic intros to the podcast are the very first episode of Season 1 “When to start paying yourself” because that is a huge challenge for every budding entrepreneur, “Working with foreign factories” because it’s such a tricky and difficult area for many small businesses to navigate and then our special bonus COVID related episodes with 4 entrepreneurs trying to navigate lockdown, business decline or business increase all while trying to not only maintain employees but keep health and safety first and foremost for all.
