]]>There are so many topics we could all use a primer on, so starting with what’s interesting or valuable to you is key. For us, this week we wanted to learn a bit more about climate change and sustainability. We’re always on the lookout for podcasts that promote intersectionality (especially if they’re talking about something from a feminist perspective) which is how we found Mothers of Invention, “a podcast on feminist climate change solutions from (mostly) women around the world.”
Back for its third season, Mothers of Invention is hosted by former Irish president Mary Robinson, comedian Maeve Higgins, and producer Thimali Kodikara who welcome listeners in with ease. If you’re feeling intimidated by the weight of climate change as a topic, Mary, Maeve and Thimali’s chemistry will quickly make you feel welcome. Titles aside, these three individuals are here to learn and share with their listeners, a lesson we can all forget as podcasters when we’re discussing a theme we’re passionate about.
Along with our trio of hosts, Mothers of Invention offers us interviews with experts in climate change, from scientists and researchers to activists and politicians. These guests come from all over the world to talk about aspects of climate change that some listeners may have never considered before, like climate reparations to countries who are disproportionately impacted by increasingly devastating droughts, floods, and other extreme weather conditions.
A key aspect to building the sense of community within the programme is how listeners are encouraged to participate. Those tuning in at home are invited to record sounds from their lives and send them in to be featured. But we are also asked to participate and see ourselves in the hosts, as when Maeve and Thimali decide to write a letter to a local official about the dumping of waste into the Hudson River in New York. Here we can easily see ourselves in the discussion of two women who have possibly never written their local elected officials before, and are unsure where to start or how to be effective. With Mary offering insight into what an official is likely to read or respond to, our own anxieties are eased about making sure the issues important to us are being confronted by our local government. We, too, can write a letter about climate change, education, or any other topic that moves us. (And we should!)

]]>POD BIBLE: Who are you and what’s your podcast about?
EMMA SAYLE: I’m Emma Sayle, founder and CEO of Killing Kittens, a female sexuality empowerment company and co host of Killing Kittens – The Naked Truth Podcast co-hosted by Emma Kenny and Harriet Minter. We discuss everything from sex and relationships to body image and kinks with a mix of celebrity guests and experts thrown in the mix every week, with nothing off limits.
PB: What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?
ES: The Tim Ferriss Show.
PB: Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?
ES: For some time, we have been increasing the educational side of KK, with more and more workshops, panel debates and talks with amazing experts. We wanted to bring those conversations into the mainstream to help normalise the sex conversation. Launching a podcast was the obvious place to bring these conversations. Emma Kenny and Harriet Minter are two very open, sex-positive media commentators and also friends of mine, so we knew it would be an open, honest and frank conversation if the three of us got together as co-hosts.
PB: Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?
ES: Any podcasts where I can learn more about myself from a business perspective e.g. Moonshots, to spiritual ones e.g. Oprah’s Soul Sessions. Any podcasts with Brené Brown, I can’t get enough of; I find her unbelievably inspiring and just very real and relatable.

PB: Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?
ES: Dolly Parton! She’s literally my total childhood hero and continues to be!
PB: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?
ES: That it’s not a case of ‘build it and they shall come’, you have to really work on the marketing side of it! And also don’t assume that everyone wants to listen to the dulcet tones of your voice.
PB: Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?
ES: Episode 3 with the actor and writer Noel Clarke is great, as he’s so open about being a feminist and how he sees the whole female sexuality movement, so its a great mix of all things KK across the sexes.
PB: Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?
ES: via the website!

]]>About Race with Reni Eddo-lodge
What’s its vibe? Drawing on her award winning book Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race, Reni Eddo-Lodge takes her thoughts and conversations further in this podcast. With discussions from critical voices in anti-racism political thought and activism, About Race explores the history which has led to where politics are today. Along with the book, I found this podcast a powerful punch of the realities of race in Britain today. Reni’s accessible and honest approach to the discourse rightly calls on white people to do the work and ask the critical questions to understand and challenge the underlying issues of race in our society today.
How’d you hear about it Lou? I knew of Reni and her work from Twitter, where she shared her writing, including the blog post that inspired the book which eventually led to the podcast.
Recommended episode? This is one to immerse yourself in from start to finish then go back time and time again until it has truly sunk in – don’t rush it but do it in order!
Intersectionality Matters with Kimberlé Crenshaw
What’s its vibe? As Professor of Law at UCLA and Columbia Law School, Crenshaw has extensive knowledge and passion in Black feminist legal theory, race and racism, along with epic feminist critique and analysis. With a varied and informed list of guests, each episode brings the concept of intersectionality to life – with honest and much needed conversations on topics from #MeToo and Black Women, the concept of Himpathy and men’s denial to take ownership of their actions. As with her scholar and activist writing, this podcast has had my ears and mind since the first listen and I really hope there are more episodes to come!
How’d you hear about it Lou? I was introduced to Crenshaw’s scholarly work and feminist activism during my Masters and have continued to follow her online, which is where I came across the podcast.
Recommended episode: I haven’t finished all the episodes yet, however, two have caught my ears. Episode three, “#MeToo and Black Women: From Hop-Hop to Hollywood” is a panel discussion that raises the profile of the unsung genealogy of the Me Too movement by acknowledging forerunners like Tarana Burke, who coined the hashtag #MeToo to raise awareness around the question of Black women’s vulnerability to sexual violence. In episode four, “The Anatomy of an Apology”, Crenshaw speaks with Tony award-winning playwright and activist Eve Ensler about her book The Apology and how the withholding of this is rooted at the cause of the unquestionable code of silence among men and how this can and must be broken.
Louise Jenkins is a feminist based in the UK. She is a freelancer in women’s and girls’ rights whose work focuses on ending all forms of violence against women and girls, and the power and importance of feminist movements to bring about such change. When her ears aren’t glued to music or her heads in a book she can be found losing her ears and mind to an eclectic list of podcasts, primarily ones led by strong, passionate women.
