The joy of getting deep, deep, deep into a TV show you love is a double-edged sword. Sure, you’re having the time of your life. You’re connecting to great art. You’re expanding your experience of this world, while wrapping yourself up in worlds you could never have experienced.

But you’re also kind of busy, and despite your best efforts your partner/mates/colleagues/flatmates/pets don’t have anywhere near as much invested in, say, the ongoing struggle for control of Waystar-RoyCo. Where do you put your energy, your urge to shout about it, your extremely tenuous fan theories? Or, if you pick up a show absolutely yonks after everyone else was raving about it, how do you feel it unfurling before you without getting the standard “What, you’re only just watching Breaking Bad?” response from anyone you try to chat about it with?

You listen to one of the many watchalong podcasts, obviously. There are a few different genres here, from the kinds of slightly ramshackle, homemade pods powered by their hosts’ deep devotion to their subject to the super-swish broadcaster produced tie-ins that have become de rigeur for shows big and small. Here are some of the best.

His Darker Materials

Hosts Dave Corkery and Empire magazine’s Helen O’Hara delve deep into HBO and the BBC’s adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novels, with cast members including Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson and VFX don Russell Dodgson also popping by to explain how the show comes together behind the scenes. Empire Podcast listeners will already be familiar with O’Hara’s mix of insight, knowledge and generally being a laugh, and the easy rapport she has with Corkery is the bedrock here. Listen now >>

Buffering: A Rewatch Adventure

It’s hard to overstate quite how important Buffy the Vampire Slayer was to a generation of young people who found community and recognition in its portrayal of gay women. Hosts Kristin Russo and Jenny Owen Youngs are both queer and bring that perspective to their ep-by-ep rewatch of Buffy. Astutely picking out viewpoints that were bypassed in the late nineties, they bring a fresh and affectionate eye to a show they both love. And, at the end of each episode, there’s a new original song responding to what they’ve seen. Now they’ve finished Buffy, the pair are moving onto another cult favourite with The eX-Files: An X-Files Podcast. Listen now >>

Office Ladies

The crew who starred in The US Office are clearly loath to leave a thing they loved behind – after Brian Baumgartner’s The Office Deep Dive pod, which featured pretty much anyone who’s ever been near Dunder Mifflin there’s this from Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey who played Pam and Angela respectively. It’s another ep-by-ep breakdown, and the very palpable sense that these best pals are having fun wandering down memory lane is apt for the ultimate comfort blanket sitcom. Listen now >>

The Crown Official Podcast

Official podcasts can be a teensy bit dull, but what you lose in spicy takes and off-brand wittering you gain in glossier presentation and a hotline straight to the big dogs at the heart of things. The Crown costs about a trillion quid as it is, and clearly some of that’s gone to the official tie-in pod: Edith Bowman on hosting duties, cast members dropping by to chat, and a raft of fascinating below-the-line professionals doing the hard yards to pull the whole thing together. Listen now >>

Dragoncast

Back in the heady days of early 2019, before that Starbucks cup got left on Daenerys’ desk and everything started going to pot, the Game of Thrones fandom was one of the most obsessive and upbeat fandoms around. With House of the Dragon, it feels like the good times are back again, and Jamie East’s podcast has been there for all the ups and downs. Sue Perkins and journalist Chris Mandle are regular guests, and ensure every fan theory and world-building detail is chased down. Listen now >>

Dug Too Deep

A billion quid later, we’re still kind of making our minds up about whether Amazon Prime’s admittedly beautiful Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series was worth all the palaver. But as with everything Tolkien, there are passionate defenders of – and, even more crucially, knowledgeable interpreters of – his work everywhere. Jim, Aron, David and John are some such types, reverently irreverent about everything Rings of Power but full of Middle Earth lore too. The chiptune rendering of Concerning Hobbits which opens each ep is a joy. Listen now >>

The Lost Boys

Film journalists Jacob Stolworthy (Lost superfan) and Jack Shepherd (Lost agnostic) watch the entirety of the extremely what-just-happened desert island drama. It’s a particularly handy pod for the Lost first-timer, what with Jacob’s deep knowledge and Jack’s knack for asking exactly what you’re probably thinking about the show which stands as probably the biggest fan theory generator since Twin Peaks. The interviews with the cast and crew are excellent too. Listen now >>

Firecrotch and Normcore: A Succession Podcast

Husband and wife Geoff Lloyd and Sara Barron will be familiar from their work on BBC comedy across TV and radio, and as well as breaking down each episode they’re exceptionally good at picking up and pulling at the stray threads which live rent-free in the heads of Succession stans. Where exactly did Marcia’s son go? We deserve to know. Listen now >>

HBO’s Succession Podcast

Official tie-in podcasts can be a bit of a mixed bag. Yes, the access to stars and prime movers is great, but the necessity of only being nice about the thing that it’s tied in with can make the discussion a little anodyne. Fortunately, Succession is on such outrageously good form that it takes that roadblock out of the way of HBO’s pod, and host Kara Swisher is appropriately brisk with her guests to get the most out of them. Well, it wouldn’t be right if such an unsentimental show got too cosy a pod, would it? Listen now >>

Talking Sopranos

It’s been off the air for more than 15 years, but it’s never the wrong time to get into The Sopranos. Whether you’re fresh to it or on a twelfth rewatch, this is the top companion pod. Its hosts are Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa, who played Christopher Moltisanti and Bobby Baccalieri, and who liberally sprinkle anecdotes and memories from their time on set into the mix. It’s as close as you’ll get to hanging out eavesdropping on Tony in Dr Melfi’s office in podcast form. Listen now >>

Actor, writer and comedian Brett Goldstein is having one hell of career climb! The new series of his Emmy Award-winning show Ted Lasso may be starting tomorrow, but to us Brett will always be burying people with their favourite films.  Somewhere between his hit TV show, a new role as a Marvel superhero and a variety of exciting writing projects, we caught up with the Films To Be Buried With host for Issue #023 to chat all about podcasting…

PB: TELL US ABOUT YOUR SHOW! WHAT’S YOUR PODCAST ELEVATOR PITCH?

BG: A guest comes on, I tell them they’ve died, then we discuss their life through the films that meant the most to them. What film scared them the most, made them cry the most etc. At the end they pick the film to go in their coffin and take to heaven. Life, death, movies.

WHY PODCASTING? WHAT WAS IT ABOUT THE FORMAT THAT ATTRACTED YOU?

Podcasts are one of the only mediums you get to have a full, deep, funny and meaningful conversation with someone without interruptions or edits. It’s a privilege to talk to a person for 60-90 minutes straight. We don’t do that enough in real life probably. Without a mic, no one talks anymore!

WHAT‘S THE SECRET TO BEING A GOOD PODCAST HOST?

Make the guest feel welcome and safe, ask good questions, don’t interrupt. Listen more than you talk. Don’t be a xxxx.

SINCE STARTING THE PODCAST YOUR ACTING AND WRITING CAREER HAVE REALLY TAKEN OFF, HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO KEEP THE PODCAST GOING WEEK IN, WEEK OUT?

I don’t know. I should try to sleep sometime. But I would miss the real connection you get with a person in these conversations. If you ask the right questions, people are always fascinating.

YOU’VE HAD SOME INCREDIBLE NAMES ON THE PODCAST, FROM SHARON STONE, TO EDGAR WRIGHT, TO BARRY JENKINS. WHO WERE YOU MOST NERVOUS TO SPEAK TO?

All of the above. I get most nervous of the biggest heroes… I remember being very nervous meeting Brené Brown. I really wanted it to go well. And she was a delight. But one in particular was Mark Frost. Twin Peaks is something that has lived in my subconscious for 30 years so I was very worried about any part of that meeting being a disappointment. In fact, he was even better then I hoped. Though I think you can tell the whole episode is me trying not to say ‘I love you’ for 90 minutes.

…AND WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO INVITE ON WHO HASN’T FEATURED SO FAR?

Martin Scorsese, Sofia Coppola, Greta Gerwig, Steve Martin, my neighbour Maureen (a really hard get as her agent is a power hungry psychopath.)

FINALLY, WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT FAVOURITE PODCASTS AWAY FROM THE WORLD OF FILM?

The Comedian’s Comedian, Cuddle Club, This American Life, and Off Menu.

Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard of yet. This time we’re speaking to Philip Gawthorne about the new film podcast exploring the far-reaching influence of the 1988’s classic ‘Die Hard’…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

Hi! I’m Philip Gawthorne and I’m an action movie screenwriter living in Hollywood. Our podcast Die Hard on a Blank explores the influence of Die Hard on action cinema, one action movie at a time. I co-host the show with Liam Billingham, a brilliant film podcaster and fellow cinephile. Each episode is a deep dive on a different action movie that contains some kind of ‘Die Hard DNA’. It’s essentially a fun movie discussion podcast that treats the action genre with real respect and love.

Phil Gawthorne

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

How Did This Get Made? was really my gateway drug into this world – I quickly became addicted to it. The three hosts are absolutely brilliant – wildly contrasting personalities who together have incredible chemistry. What they’ve achieved in the podcast space is truly inspiring – now they do live shows and pack out venues all across the United States. I think they blazed the trail for everyone in this game.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I’m a passionate cinephile with a particular love of the action movies of the 1980s and 1990s, which was really a golden age of action cinema. I was a video store kid and there’s a sense of nostalgia to the whole experience – there’s something wonderfully comforting about revisiting all these films that I loved so much growing up. At the same time, I work in the Hollywood studio system as a screenwriter, so I come at the analysis from an inside business angle, as well as being an action movie fanboy. This project was something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and when I met my co-host Liam Billingham, everything clicked into place. He has the same effusive love of action movies that I do, but he comes at it all from a completely different cultural perspective (I’m British, he’s American) which makes for highly entertaining conversations!

Liam Billingham co-host of Die Hard On A Blank

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

I’m a huge fan of The Rewatchables and Clash of the Titles – two shows that adroitly balance serious cultural/critical analysis and a light-hearted sense of fun. I want our show to evoke the same friendly, inviting vibe that those podcasts have, where you feel like you’re hanging out with your mates when you listen. There was another show called 80s All Over that I absolutely loved, where they reviewed every movie of the 1980s, one month at a time. It was a fascinating endeavour, as everything was placed in a social-political context, and you got a real sense of different filmic trends throughout the decade. I want to do the same thing with Die Hard On A Blank, as we’ll be discussing all the films in chronological order of their release. It’s a kind of “action movie genealogy project”, where we’ll be able to track how the Die Hard formula evolved, adapted and mutated over time. Each episode will be entertaining in its own right, but in its totality it will be a comprehensive analysis of Die Hard‘s enduring impact on action cinema.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

There are several guests I’d love to have on, but right now there’s a podcaster and presenter called Kyle Brandt that I’m a huge fan of. He’s primarily an NFL guy, but he’s guested a few times on The Rewatchables discussing 80s action movies like Commando and Cobra and I know we’re very much on the same action movie wavelength! Van Lathan is another guy I’d love to have on, as well as Matt Gourley, who did a wonderful podcast called I Was There Too and now co-hosts the 007 podcast James Bonding We’ll be doing all the Bonds, Bournes and Jack Ryans, so I’d love to have guests who can provide additional expertise in certain areas, especially if there’s an action movie they’re really passionate about!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

Doing a podcast is a lot of work, so it’s important that you absolutely love it, which fortunately I do! I think finding the right partners and co-host is also critical – it needs to be about a subject that you are utterly fascinated by and truly passionate about, that you discuss with someone whose company you genuinely enjoy. That’s certainly been the case with Die Hard On A Blank – it’s a transfer of enthusiasm with the audience, and Liam and I certainly have abundant enthusiasm for action movies!

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

The show starts with a two-part double header (out on December 21 across all platforms) all about the original 1988 classic Die Hard, and that’s a great entry point for new listeners. We break down Die Hard scene by scene, moment by moment, then we go on to discuss all the pop-cultural elements that influenced it. That includes films such as The Detective starring Frank Sinatra (who was originally offered the role of John McClane), the 1976 disaster movie The Towering Inferno, and the first Rambo picture, First Blood. We also talk a lot about Nothing Lasts Forever, the 1979 thriller novel upon which Die Hard is based. In other episodes, we’ll go on to talk about films like Road House, License to Kill, The Hunt for Red October and Die Hard 2 – look out for that episode, I think it was the funniest one we’ve done so far (by which I mean I mean the most embarrassing for me).

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

I’m on all the usual social media places – Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. I’m also on the Blu-ray/iTunes commentary track for the 2020 sci-fi/horror/action film Underwater, alongside the director William Eubank, who is a frequent collaborator of mine – so you can hear me gabbing about that movie there. I recently appeared on my friend Andy Maiorano’s podcast The AndyPlex, where we discuss Blue Thunder, the most underrated action movie of the 1980s in my opinion, and we talk more about Die Hard on a Blank and the show’s format. There’s a few fun games we play on our show that we chat about in that interview. Liam also has his own show called Rohmercast that’s really cool – he was recently listed in Vulture’s article about the best film podcasts. So come check us out – we want to welcome all our pals to the party!

It’s now 60 years since Sean Connery first cocked an eyebrow and introduced himself to Sylvia Trench and the world at large as Bond – James Bond. Twenty-five films and $5 billion in box office takings later, he and his franchise are at an intriguingly poised point.

With casting for a brand new Bond still in its early stages, a top-to-bottom reboot on the cards and nothing much happening in the near future, it’s a good time to dig into the back catalogue of the man who makes functional alcoholism with a side-order of post-traumatic stress disorder look exotic and saucy.

The Bond pod-verse is one which skews pretty severely male – and particularly toward formats where two blokes talk to each other about one film for ages – but there are other, more interesting and provocative takes out there too.

Here are some of the best James Bond podcasts out there.

The James Bond A to Z Podcast

The sprawling, interconnected, frequently quite strange history of Bond from his roots in Ian Fleming’s novels to the films, games and comics is a bit of a mess. It needs organising. Journalists Tom Butler and Tom Wheatley and comedian Brendan Duffy start at the top of the alphabet and work their way through, from Aston Martin and Ken Adam to Cubby Broccoli, Blofeld and onward. Telling a definitive history of James Bond is a daunting task – its fandom is very sensitive to people getting Bond wrong (copyright A Partridge) – but the three hosts draw on a really deep well of knowledge to give the people responsible for Bond their dues. Listen now on your podcast player >>

Smersh Pod

What started as host John Rain and friends rewatching all the Bond films and ripping them to pieces together – though always from a place of great love and respect – has mushroomed into an all-purpose cinematic snark-athon taking in any films even tangentially related to Bond actors. That means you get classic Pierce Brosnan joints like Mamma Mia! and The Lawnmower Man, Connery’s The Hunt for Red October and The Rock, and the Timothy Dalton-Mae West comedy musical Sextette. Very daft, very sweary and very funny. Listen now on your podcast player >>

No Time To Die: The Official James Bond Podcast

Now mothballed of course, there are nevertheless a lot of useful tidbits about the making of Daniel Craig’s final Bond film here, and as is usually the case with in-house promo pods, the access is second to none. Everyone involved in the film pops up here, from Craig himself to director Cary Joji Fukunaga, Rami Malek and the rest of the gang, and it goes well beyond just gassing up the last film and instead picks apart what makes a Bond film a Bond film. That means deep dives on the music, the locations and the way that the fictional spy has been moulded by the real world. Listen now on your podcast player >>

The Great James Bond Car Robbery

Though he’s adept at getting hold of all sorts of stolen bits and pieces on behalf of HM Government, Bond has never been part of a heist crew. And fair enough: he usually leaves a trail of destruction behind him. But a real-life heist sprung in a Florida aircraft hangar in 1997 was easily as strange and inexplicable as that gondola hovercraft Roger Moore drove through Venice in Moonraker. An Aston Martin DB5 used in Goldfinger and Thunderball and estimated to be worth £18.5 million is missing, but specialist sleuths are on the case. Elizabeth Hurley narrates. Listen now on your podcast player >>

James Bond & Friends

From the people behind the fansite MI6 HQ, this is a holistic, 360-degree expert’s eye view on pretty much every iteration of Bond, from the films to novels and video games to cartoon spin-off series James Bond Jr. Yep, it’s another let’s-watch-the-movies-in-order kind of a pod, but you know why people keep doing that? Because it works. And this load of Bond fans really do know their stuff. Alongside MI6 HQ’s James Page is a coalition of Bond aficionados who’ve read every ‘for your eyes only’ secret dossier out there, while regular guests include Dr Lisa Funnell, an academic whose research focuses on Bond and gender. Listen now on your podcast player >>

Kill James Bond

If you’re less pie-eyed about Bond and his penchant for murder, following his horn and the more yikes-y quips of yesteryear, this one might be more your thing. Abi, Alice and Devon (who produces the very good comedy/economics/current affairs/whatever pod Trashfuture) have watched all the Bond films and go in on them with both feet. Their assessment of Bond’s flat as seen in Spectre (“He has one crate of Gamer Fuel he’s using as a chair”) is worth the admission alone, and they’ve expanded out into anything even vaguely spy-adjacent since. The good news is you don’t need to have seen Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London to enjoy their work. Listen now on your podcast player >>

Desert Island Discs

It’s a mark of how venerable Desert Island Discs is that it was already two decades old by the time Ian Fleming washed up to pick his tunes with Roy Plomley in 1963. (As well as Rosemary Clooney and Edith Piaf, he picked the appropriately noirish Harry Lime Theme from The Third Man.) Roger Moore dropped in in 1981, while latterday M Dame Judi Dench reflected on her time sending Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig to almost certain death in 2015, and iconic set designer Ken Adam has been set adrift. Bond composer John Barry has done it too, as have a raft of Bond theme song acts: Macca, Lulu, Sir Tom Jones, Adele and Dame Shirley Bassey all feature.

Even 25 years since a flying motorbike first touched down outside a nondescript house on Privet Drive, Little Whinging, the world is still utterly besotted with Harry Potter.

However wobbly and is-this-still-a-good-idea the extended franchise films become, however fraught the conversation around JK Rowling, however rambling and complex the Potter lore becomes, it seems there will always be people ready to pick apart and dissect it afresh.

They’ve done it every which way – or should that be witch way? – from watchalong commentaries for the films to forensic chapter by chapter breakdowns. Here are some of the best.

Potterless

Mike Schubert had seen four and a half Harry Potter films before he decided to podcast his chapter-by-chapter discovery of the original books. Each time he and his more Potter-literate friends dissect what he’s just read, as he merrily points out plot holes, inconsistencies and absurdities that you definitely just skipped past when you were racing through the Potter books as a kid. You’ll see the whole thing with fresh eyes. Listen now >>

Mugglecast

This one bills itself as “the original” Harry Potter podcast, having been running in some form since August 2005, two months after Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince landed. In that time hosts Andrew, Micah, Eric and Laura have looked at Potter from pretty much every angle: they’ve dived deep into each chapter, recorded watchalong film commentaries, and interviewed cast and crew. These days they keep up with all the latest developments from the broader Potter-verse. Listen now >>

Accio Politics

Don’t worry – this isn’t like one of those lame tweets that used to pop up every so often comparing Donald Trump with Voldemort. Rather, it’s a chapter-by-chapter assessment of the politics of the wizarding world, from the objectifying dynamic of fame and celebrity which Harry experiences to what we can learn about how supremacism and bigotry function and spread from the books. Listen now >>

Potterversity

There are a lot of fancasts out there to pick over the development of Quidditch in ancient Ireland, and they’re all well and good, but Potterversity sets its sights a little higher. Katy McDaniel and Emily Strand bring critical perspectives to the Potter stories and speak to academics to get an intellectually fresh take – Hermione’s advocacy for house elves, for instance, serves as a training ground for young readers to get into activism. Smart stuff. Listen now >>

Harry Potter Therapy

Another podcast which uses Potter as a framework for exploring very complex, weighty ideas, Harry Potter Therapy is presented by psychologist Dr Janina Scarlet, who developed a ‘superhero therapy’ as a way to treat people with depression, anxiety and PTSD. This spin-off from it uses Potter as a way of talking about and conceptualising emotions and feelings, and points to some handy ways to cope with them too. Listen now >>

The Quibbler

Heather Price-Wright and Alex Dalenberg’s ‘book club for adults’ is the podcasting equivalent of the restricted section in the Hogwarts library. Their discussion about each and every chapter of the saga are frequently X-rated and always irreverent in the way that only a truly dedicated fan podcast can be. Listen now >>

Behind the Wand

If you’re still misty-eyed about the film reunions which came together around the 20th anniversary of The Philosopher’s Stone, Behind the Wand should scratch that itch. Flick Miles, who was Emma Watson’s double in the first three films and is now a journalist, interviews the people who weaved the movie magic, from costumers and concept artists to casting directors and cinematographers. Kicking things off with horror darling The Shining vs. Dr Sleep, Alex, Vicky and Chris revisit Kubrick’s masterpiece with plenty of humour and laughter.

Alex Zane

What was your introduction to Stephen King’s stories?

Alex: I had a misleadingly soft entry into the work of King – back to back viewings of Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption. Having discovered they were based on King’s work I duly purchased his short story compilation Night Shift and got a shock. The first story I read was called ‘The Boogeyman’, a child-killing monster that lives in your closet. I couldn’t sleep for a week. And now I’ve just re-read the Wikipedia plot page (to remind myself if it really was that scary) and am currently having terror flashbacks.

Vicky: A combination of being 10 years old and wanting to leave children’s books behind, and a very cavalier (read: neglectful?) parent-recommendation for anything by Stephen King. Which led me to Needful Things, which I’m not sure I got, but I knew was way more fun than Sweet Valley High.

Chris: My first exposure to Stephen King was through the movie Stand by Me, which came out when I was 8 – making me pretty much the target audience. Loved the film, so I read the short story on which it was based in the Different Season anthology, which is where I found Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption – and then I was hooked.

Vicky Crompton

What’s your favourite adaptation of King’s work?

V: With apologies to Stephen King – it’s [the 1980] The Shining! The Gold Room calls to me and if I go my whole life without having an Old Fashioned in there…well, what a waste. Although, I’ve just re-watched Pet Sematary having forgotten a toddler EATS AN OLD MAN so that might nudge it. Cute!

A: I watched the Tim Curry It TV mini-series way too young and to date, it is the most scared I’ve ever been watching something. His Pennywise is one of the great Stephen King monsters. When he’s peering out of the drain at young Georgie and says that line: “They all float down here.” I get chills. I don’t even think I know what it means – like, do the bodies float? But he’s holding a balloon, and they float, so that’s confusing. Maybe I was scared of being confused!

C: Stand by Me and Shawshank are obvious contenders, but we’re talking about the Master of Horror, so I’ll go scary and pick The Dead Zone. David Cronenberg lends his icy-cold touch to King’s novel, Christopher Walken brings his unique brand of weird to the psychic central character, and the film itself felt all too clairvoyant as the world struggled through the Trump era.

Chris Tilly

… and least favourite?

C: There are more bad Stephen King adaptations than good, but Hollywood hit rock bottom with 2003’s Dreamcatcher. With William Goldman writing, Lawrence Kasdan directing, and the likes of Morgan Freeman, Thomas Jane, Damian Lewis and Timothy Olyphant starring – it should have been a home run. But the resulting film was pretty much unwatchable, with the villainous ‘shit-weasels’ a low-point not just for King adaptations, but for cinema in general.

A: I have to agree with Chris and go with Dreamcatcher – it had such talent behind it, Lawrence Kasdan and William Goldman… but, I mean… I don’t know that you can be scared of anything called a shit-weasel! The most terrifying thing about that movie is Morgan Freeman’s monstrous eyebrows.

V: Carrie – because it reminds me of periods and being unpopular at school, two things I could really do without.

Have You Heard? is a series in which the team from Pod Bible meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard of yet. While the Oh. My. Pod. section in the magazine gives a quick shout out to shows of that ilk, Have You Heard aims to go deeper in an effort to spread awareness for shows that deserve more exposure! In this week’s edition we sat down with Jack Chambers to discuss his podcast, TheSequelisers.

POD BIBLE: Who are you, what is your podcast called, and what’s it about?
JACK CHAMBERS: My name’s Jack Chambers, the podcast I host is called Sequelisers and it’s all about fixing and rewriting the bad sequels from cinematic history. Our slogan is “Bad sequels, sorted.”

PB: Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?
JC: I had already been listening to a few shows and my reason for starting initially was simply wanting to talk to like-minded people about subjects I’m interested in (usually, comics and video games).

PB: What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?
JC: I think it was around episode five of Podcast Beyond, the Playstation podcast from IGN, all the way back in 2007.

PB: Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?
JC: Start-up companies like Kinda Funny (based in San Francisco) and RKG (based in London) are a big inspiration for me personally and set the bar for us with where we dream of taking Sequelisers in the future.

PB: Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?
JC: Since we’re a film podcast, I think interviewing a brilliant director or screenwriter would be amazing. Denis Villeneuve is the first person who springs to mind as I know he’s a favourite of mine as well as my fellow Sequelisrs Matt and Tim.

PB: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?
JC: Audio quality matters. Sequelisers started off as five friends talking into one microphone placed in the middle of the table. We’ve since evolved our equipment and, just as importantly, our editing skills to make the show sound as professional as possible.

PB: Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your Podcast?
JC: Season Five Episode One – The Dark Knight Rises is definitely the one I’d recommend. It’s the perfect jumping-on point for our current lineup and format.

PB: Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?
JC: You can find all the Sequelisers information including our social media links, merch store and Patreon at www.sequelisers.com

Our friends at the British Board of Film Classification are sharing some background on the latest episode of the the BBFC Podcastincluding a look into how films are moving to the at-home streaming experience during the lockdown, and how their team is producing the show remotely.

Life has changed completely since restrictions were brought in to combat coronavirus, but lockdown has not only changed the way we work, it has also changed the way we watch content. It is more important than ever that we have ways to feel connected, and film can be a great shared experience. As families are spending more time online during these strange times, the BBFC are there to help them choose content well and feel confident before they settle in together for a good old fashioned movie night.

The film industry has had a quick response to the situation and many are releasing films straight onto streaming services, bypassing a traditional theatrical release. You can now experience new releases that you would usually watch in cinemas in your own homes during lockdown.

The latest episode of the BBFC Podcast takes listeners through some of these releases, and explains how they were classified. Trolls World Tour was the first major film release to go straight to streaming services since the coronavirus outbreak forced cinemas to close, and it’s one we discuss in depth. It’s also a great film to watch as a family, as it explores values such as diversity, friendship and working together. It’s an ideal film to kick off the podcast.

The other films spotlighted, Bloodshot and The Invisible Man, both had initial cinema runs that were cut short, but streaming services have offered them the chance to still reach audiences despite the pandemic. Streaming services are clearly still on the rise, now more than ever, and moves like these have set precedents for other film distributors to follow suit, with more and more content heading straight to services such as Netflix and Amazon Video.

In the episode, you can hear directly from Compliance Officers, who age rate all of your favourite films, as they share everything families would need to know about each film’s classification, content and age rating before settling in for a movie night. They also offer some well-needed tips on how to recreate the cinema experience at home, from the best snacks to dimming down the lights and turning off phones.

We also touch upon our recent research into classifying domestic abuse, which was published earlier this year after working with Women’s Aid and Respect. The Invisible Man was one of the first films to use domestic abuse – rather than domestic violence – in its rating info, offering consistency in highlighting all instances of domestic abuse in films to support victims.

But this episode also marks the first time in seven years that the podcast has been recorded remotely. We’re used to the comfort of professional equipment, and our very own mini-studio. After a few tests, trials and errors, we settled on Zoom, as we felt it gave us a good way to ensure a smooth conversation. If other podcasters are thinking about ways to carry on remotely, then we’d suggest to have the camera turned on while recording – we found that being able to see each other, albeit on our laptop screens, helped to keep the conversation flowing, and it recreated those all-important visual prompts that we’d usually get in our studio when face to face. We asked each guest to record their own audio using their mobile phones, and sent the files to be edited together using Ableton. This ensured everyone was clear and there was a limited difference in sound quality.

We’re planning to continue to record in this way during lockdown in order to bring families and film enthusiasts regular classification insights, debate and entertainment during lockdown. Right now we’re busy recording one in time for VE celebrations looking at war films over the years, and we’re also setting up a few special guests, so watch this space! But of course, like many others, we can’t wait until the day that cinemas reopen and we can catch a film on the big screen once again.

The BBFC Podcast is available on their website, Spotify, and Apple podcasts.
