Independent podcast company, Stak, has been continuing to push the boundaries of podcasting this year – and now we’re onto the next!

A lot has happened in 2024. From re-elections and the Paris Olympics to Barbenheimer, Brat Summer, the Euros, and even Oasis reuniting, the world didn’t stop – and neither did Stak! Through award-winning storytelling, sell-out live shows, and reaching millions of fans across the world, Stak have continued to redefine the connection between sports and storytelling, keeping listeners entertained, educated, and up-to-date with independent voices.

It’s been a hell of a year for Football Ramble, which celebrated 17 years of entertaining, totally unserious football broadcasting. From Euros watchalongs that brought fans together to a sold-out Palladium show, Football Ramble: Time Tunnel, celebrating football through the decades, it’s been a season of unforgettable moments. Across the leagues, Second Tier continued to celebrate Championship football, cementing long-term partnerships with Jameson and SBK and delivering a true matchday experience with their pitch-side episodes. With even more twists and turns on the way across the football season, we cannot wait to see what’s to come in the new year!

P1 with Matt and Tommy have been unstoppable this year, surpassing a staggering 20 million downloads, selling out their debut US tour, and now prepping for their next tour which kicks off in the UK this December. The energy of the P1 community is unmatched! With Matt and Tommy bringing the podcast to new heights every single year, P1 has remained the destination for F1 fans – watch out for 2025!

But 2024 wasn’t just about live shows and downloads – it was a stellar year for stories that really resonated – and Stak was at the forefront for a lot of them! The World’s Hardest Puzzle soared to No. 1 in the documentary charts, with celebrated cycling documentary Ghost in the Machine following as a listener favourite! Stak also officially launched their sports narrative feed, Legacy, which is now home to award-winning series Inside the Qatar World Cup and new, chart-topping documentary The English Disease. With the world hungry for more gripping stories, Stak is perfectly placed to continue to bring vital sporting stories to the masses. We’re excited to hear what is cooking for the new year!

Awards season also kept us busy, with Upfront getting their flowers at the Women’s International Podcast Awards and Stak winning silver for Best Network at the Audio Production Awards. But the real highlight was connecting with our listeners. From sold-out live events to collaborations with YouTube, we’ve worked to bring the podcasts you love to life, in fresh and exciting ways.

And for us, it’s not just about delivering great content – it’s about shaping the industry. Sharing ideas and conversations at events like the Broadcast Sports Summit and The Podcast Show has been a reminder of why we’re in this space: to push the boundaries of what podcasts can be and do.

So as the year wraps up, we’re looking back with pride and forward with excitement. Here’s to finding the next great story, connecting to listeners across the world, and keeping podcasting fun. See you in 2025!

With the football season well underway, Football Ramble is here to remind that football doesn’t have to be so serious…

The football season is back in business and Football Ramble is following hot on its heels, bringing a wholly unserious look at all the headlines on and off the pitch. Now into the show’s seventeenth year, Marcus Speller, Luke Moore, Andy Brassell, Jim Campbell, Pete Donaldson and Vithushan Ehantharajah are back with four episodes every single week, covering everything from the Premier League’s biggest stories to which animal recently invaded a pitch in South America.

We asked Vish, Jim and Pete some questions to find out a bit more about their fellow Ramblers and how they would all deal with life in the Premier League – strap in!

Let’s start in the obvious place. If one of them had to score a penalty to save your life, who would you pick to take it – Vish or Pete?

Jim: Vish, because even with stakes that high I can easily imagine Pete getting distracted, maybe remembering that he’s left his front door open, then skying me into oblivion to the delight of whatever sicko organised this.

Who is most likely to be sent off for dissent?

Vish: Probably Jim, actually. Underrated angry man. Don’t really see it until he’s watching football. So presumably being involved in a football match himself would make his rage volcanic.

Who is most likely to play poorly the whole match an d then score a screamer in the last few minutes of the game?

Pete: Obviously me, but that would be shortly followed by me passing to an opposing player and them rounding the keeper. Because I hate myself and I can’t have nice things. If you were playing centre half for a really tough game, who would you want defending by your side?

J: Andy. He looks a lot like tough – tackling journeyman Shaun Derry, and that would surely count for something in that situation. Also he’s a dad so he’s probably used to dealing with emergencies quickly.

Who would have the best goal celebration?

P: Vish. I’ve seen his haversack – it’s full of fireworks, ciggies and bottles of Prime. Who knows what he’s capable of. If you could replace Gianni Infantino – the Head of FIFA – with one Rambler to reform football, who would you pick?

V: Probably Andy. Not just because he’s got morals but he also likes good football so he’ll do things like ban long balls and bring in extra points for nutmegs and rabonas. Luke wouldn’t do that.

Who is most likely to win the Football Ramble FPL this season?

J: Definitely Marcus.

P: Definitely Spelldog. He keeps strange hours being a new father, and who knows what tactical sorcery he’s attempting at 3am.

V: Marcus, I’m afraid. Just loves the game. Reads it well. Talks about it too much. Hates fun. Marcus.

Listen to brand new episodes of the Football Ramble four days a week, wherever you get your podcasts. Because football doesn’t always have to be so serious.

If there’s one thing football fans love, it’s sharing their opinions about ‘the beautiful game’, and with the season about to reach it’s climax more fans than ever are tuning into football podcasts to revel in their team’s success, wallow in it’s failures or simply keep up to date with all the drama. But alongside our favourite preview and reaction shows, there’s a whole host of other types of football podcasts just waiting to be listened to. Whether it’s in-depth tactical analysis, a good dose of nostalgia, or a sideways glance at the more humorous side of the game, there appears to be something for everyone. Here’s my selection of 15 of the best football podcasts to listen to in 2023.

Football Ramble

From a few mates sat around a kitchen table, to a professionally-produced daily show with a rotating cast of presenters, the Football Ramble has changed quite a bit since 2007. One thing that’s been a mainstay is the level of entertainment. The Ramble gang never take themselves too seriously and, while things can often get silly (in the best possible way) they consistently tackle each aspect of the game with a nuanced and thoughtful approach. Totally Football Show

After years at the helm of The Guardian Football Weekly, long-time fans were stunned when James Richardson abruptly left in 2017. Within days, the first episode of Totally Football Show was out, and the show has gone from strength to strength ever since. Expertly guided by the legendary former anchor of Football Italia on Channel 4, the pod features an eclectic mix of supporting talent from the world of football journalism, providing expert insight and analysis of the Premier League, European football and beyond. Listen now >>

The Guardian Football Weekly

The Guardian Football Weekly

One of the longest-running football pods, first broadcast in 2006. Football Weekly set the bar with regular news, reviews and matchday previews. After host James Richardson left in 2017, long-time stand-in Max Rushden assumed the role, arguably taking the show to even greater heights with the help of regular co-host Barry Glendenning. While the main focus is English football, the Guardian’s long list of European-based journalists can always be relied on to give expert insight on events in La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and beyond. Listen now >>

Wrighty’s House

Wrighty’s House features legendary ex footballer and popular pundit Ian Wright speaking with a rotating cast of co-hosts about both mens and woman’s football. Wrighty’s infectious enthusiasm and unapologetic honesty make this a must listen, but the way he elevates and learns from each of his co-hosts is also a joy to behold. Not only does he bring his own wealth of knowledge to the table, he’s always open to learning and taking on other opinions. A Pod Bible favourite that’s available twice weekly.  Listen now >>

The Offside Rule

Women’s football continues to rise in both profile and popularity, with big TV deals, proper press coverage, breakout pundits like Alex Scott and Karen Carney and of course the England Women’s Euro’s win all helping the cause. As one of the first podcassts focusing exclusively on the women’s game The Offside Rule continues to lead the way, reporting on the Women’s Super League, Championship and more. Lynsey Hooper, Kait Borsay and Hayley McQueen are passionate and engaging hosts who actively promote female inclusion in every element of the game. Listen now >>

Touchline Fracas

Touchline Fracas

A show for the everyday fan, featuring fascinating debates between passionate supporters so often unheard by mainstream media. Weekly episodes cover all areas of the Premier League, while they also host individual club podcasts focusing on Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and Manchester United. Touchline Fracas is a predominantly Black-owned media platform that by utilising fans, provides a refreshing alternative to the shows dominated by journalists, pundits and former pros. Listen now >>

Counter Pressed

A more recent addition to the roster of podcast’s looking at the women’s game, Counter Pressed features journalist Flo Lloyd-Hughes and a rotating cast of friends for this twice weekly deep dive into the WSL and much more. As a regular guest on the aforementioned Wrighty’s House, Flo brings a similar vibe to this twice weekly show that, no matter the lineup, brings a consistent chemistry between it’s co-hosts.  Listen now >>

The Overlap with Gary Neville

After cementing himself as one of, if the the country’s leading football pundit, Gary Neville has proven equally as adept in podcasting as he speaks to some of the biggest names from football and the wider sporting world. Gary goes deep with his guests, refelcting on their careers and vulnerabilities in revealing long form interviews. Guests so far have inlcuded Harry Kane, Jill Scott, David Beckham and UEFA President Alexsander Čeferin.    Listen now >>

GIANT Football Podcast

GIANT

If you’re looking for a change from the daily review shows, GIANT’s documentary-style episodes are a great place to start. Produced by the team behind Mundial magazine alongside Spotify, GIANT focuses on specific stories from the history of football, often speaking to the people who were directly involved. Whether telling a story from the grassroots of lower league football or celebrating the essence of what made a former great great, each episode is beautifully produced and deeply captivating. Listen now >>

Stadio

When founders Ryan Hunn and Musa Okwonga started Stadio, their aim was to cover much more than just the Premier League. From far-flung European leagues, to wider societal and political issues off the pitch, Ryan and Musa speak passionately and sensitively about the game they love, whatever the subject. A twice-weekly show that will quickly become an essential part of your podcast library, especially if you’re a fan of a beautifully crafted analogy… Listen now >>

Tifo Football Podcast

The Tifo Football Podcast was created off the back of their popular YouTube channel, with the aim of providing in-depth tactical, historical and geopolitical breakdowns of the beautiful game. The chemistry between the hosts is infectious, and their detailed analysis of often overlooked areas of the game really differentiate them from the pack. Interested in how transfers work post Brexit? Keen to drill down into Premier League tactical trends? Intrigued by full time Fantasy Football players? Tifo has got you covered.  Listen now >>

Football Cliches

The language of football is unique, bizarre and, of course, riddled with cliché. What is a ‘proper football man’? How late in a game can you score the ‘opener’? What’s the difference between ‘swooping’ for a signing and ‘splashing the cash’? These linguistic quandaries and many more are all examined here. In its forensic and borderline obsessive analysis of how we talk about the game, Football Cliches mines a rich seam of humour and absurdity. Each episode focuses on a specific element of the language of football, and assesses what we talk about when we talk about goals, kits, celebrations, transfer windows and more. Listen now >>

That Peter Crouch Podcast

Peter Crouch’s podcast has gained a vast following since debuting on BBC Radio 5 Live in 2018. The ex England striker already had a reputation as a charismatic character, but the show’s format enables his playful personality to shine even brighter. The main attraction is Crouch’s ability to regale his co-hosts with anecdotes and behind-the-scenes knowledge from his playing days, but his analysis of the modern game is also worth tuning in for. Listen now >>

Quickly Kevin, Will He Score?

Quickly Kevin, Will He Score?

Named after the infamous piece of commentary between Brian Moore and Kevin Keegan at France ‘98 and positively dripping with 90s nostalgia. Hosts Josh Widdicombe, Michael Marden and Chris Scull delight in reminiscing about the ‘golden age’ of the Premier League, interviewing cult heroes from Matt Le Tissier and Paul Merson, to Carlton Palmer and Graeme Le Saux. There’s been no new epsiodes since December 2022 but considering the focus is on nostalgia the content remains timeless. Perfect if you yearn for the simpler times of sticker albums, jumpers for goalposts and staying up for Match of the Day. Listen now >>

The Blizzard Football Podcast

The Blizzard

Highly-respected football writer Jonathan Wilson and the Football Ramble’s Marcus Speller are joined by a guest each week for a deep dive into one of football’s ‘greatest games’. Focusing on a single game gives the show the breathing space needed to closely examine every aspect of the match, from the context around the fixture at the time, to the action on the pitch and ramifications for all involved. Although episode’s stopped being released in November 2021 these A refreshing change from the swift analysis necessary in more general round-up shows. Listen now >>

Acast, the world’s leading independent podcast company, today announces the launch of Acast Amplifier — its first ever podcast incubator programme — in the UK. Acast Amplifier has been developed to discover and invest in the next generation of podcasters, and will see three aspiring UK-based creators produce and launch new podcasts, as well as receiving benefits including a £2,500 grant.

To be considered, budding podcasters based in the UK — and who don’t already have a podcast — need to apply via an online application. Applicants should introduce themselves and their podcast idea, alongside a 60-second audio statement explaining why they should be picked for the Acast Amplifier incubator.

Acast and a panel of ambassadors — featuring fan-favourite podcasters from the Acast Creator Network alongside other industry experts — will judge the entries and choose three winning creators. Applications are open from today, January 25, and closing at 00:00 GMT on March 14.

Panellists include Adam Buxton (The Adam Buxton Podcast), Chanté Joseph (writer, creator of How Not To Be Racist), Pete Donaldson (Football Ramble), Dane Baptiste (comedian, host of Dane Baptiste Questions Everything), Niellah Arboine (Growing Up With gal-dem), Tash Walker and Shivani Dave (The Log Books), Leanne Levers & Roshan Roberts (Dope Black Women), Scroobius Pip, Stu Whiffen and Adam Richardson (Pod Bible), Imriel Morgan (Content is Queen), Chal Ravens (Novara Media, Crack Magazine), and Sophie MacAskill (Curtis Brown)

Winning applicants will have their first three episodes fully produced, along with their podcast’s branding including artwork and music. They’ll also receive a £2,500 grant each, to continue to fund their show, plus a free lifetime subscription to Acast’s top hosting plan, and bespoke support and free equipment from Acast and its partners – including Shure, Pirate Studios, and Crack Magazine’s creative agency CC Co. To cover all bases, from production to branding and monetisation, winners will also receive mentoring from Acast.

Sam Shetabi, UK Content Director from Acast, said: “This really is the opportunity of a lifetime for three people with a story to tell. They’ll get unparalleled support and advice from industry big-hitters, including mentorship from some top podcasters who’ve been there and done it.

“We want to provide tomorrow’s podcast creators with everything they could possibly need to get their ideas out into the world, and I can’t wait to hear their applications. We’re about to uncover the next great British podcast.”

Adam Buxton, host of The Adam Buxton Podcast, said: “Hello Adam Buxton here. Podcasting is a great way to make genuine connections with an audience whether you’re recording a chat on your phone or creating intricate soundscapes, dealing with serious subjects or providing relief from everyday stress by being silly, and I’m very happy to encourage new voices and new ideas to emerge with the help of Acast’s Amplifier programme. I’m excited to hear who’s out there.”

Imriel Morgan, CEO of Content is Queen: “I believe podcast incubators are the future of talent development in the podcasting industry. We need to create risk-free environments for creators from all backgrounds to innovate and pivot. It’s been core to my work for the last seven years so I’m very excited to join the Acast Amplifier judging panel and hear all of the niche and wonderful ideas that come from the applicants.”

Pete Donaldson, host of Football Ramble: “I’m really excited to hear pitches from fresh voices in the space through the Acast Amplifier.  It’s often said that podcasts have a very low bar of entry, but great ideas can often get buried under poor production, planning and the like. I’m honoured to be able to help Acast give new podcasts the very best start.”

Chanté Joseph, writer and creator of How Not To Be Racist: “I’m a huge fan of podcasts, I probably listen to more podcasts than music. Every week I try to find a new series to listen to that will help me to discover a new idea and expand my worldview. I’m so excited to sit on this panel and be a part of aiding the next generation of talented podcasters. I can’t wait to listen to all of the ideas and get lost in their stories.”

Acast Amplifier follows the launch of Aclass Essentials, a free online resource to equip anyone who wants to start their own podcast with the knowledge they need to produce great, original audio content from home.

For Mental Health Awareness Week, Acast — the creator-first podcast company — is bringing the UK and Ireland’s favourite health and wellness podcasters together, with a line-up of the most popular podcasters from the Acast Creator Network answering the question:

‘What piece of advice do I wish I could tell my younger self?’

The conversation series encourages podcast fans to listen, learn and find comfort in talking about mental health, as well as hear about ways to support yourself or others. The podcasters involved include:

  • Kate Mason and Jim Campbell of The Football Ramble talking to Dr Rupy from The Doctor’s Kitchen Podcast about gym anxiety and how physical health can help mental health.
  • Actor and podcaster Scroobius Pip from Distraction Pieces Podcast talking to birth doula Lauren Mishcon and women’s coach Nicole Goodman of Self Care Club about worrying what others think of you.
  • Podcaster and one half of The Rubberbandits Blindboy talking to neuroscientist and podcaster Dr Sabina Brennan of Super Brain about understanding how the brain works.
  • Historian, presenter and podcaster Dan Snow talking to Caroline Foran, author and host of Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast about accepting failure.

The series makes use of Acast’s recently launched Sponsored Stories ad format, with the segments dynamically inserted at the end of episodes of the podcasts taking part. There will also be videos of the conversations posted across Acast’s social channels.

Acast believes there’s power in podcasts, with compassion, companionship, and comfort to be found for all sorts of situations — whether it’s turning to a familiar voice in your favourite podcast host, listening in on an intimate discussion about a guest’s own mental health journey, or relaxing with a welcome distraction from the day-to-day.

Podcasts also offer a way for people to stay entertained away from screen fatigue. Recent studies have investigated the association between screen time and mental health during COVID-19, and Acast recently ran a representative survey of the UK population of more than 2,000 respondents, where more than 52% of Brits said they feel as though they need to reduce the amount of screen time they’re getting in a day.

Sam Shetabi, Content Director Acast UK/IE, said: “It’s not surprising to see so many of us eager to spend less time in front of screens in a year that was defined by endless Zoom calls and TV series binging. We think podcasts are a perfect way to get away from looking at glaring screens and still be kept up to date with news and culture, learn something new or have a laugh — as well as hear the most unguarded conversations on issues like mental health. It’s important to bring these discussions to listeners, and we’re doing it with the help of some of the most exciting names in podcasting.”

Dr. Rupy Aujla, host of The Doctor’s Kitchen, said: “It was really cool to talk to the Football Ramble team about physical activity, food and how they are related to mental health. It’s brilliant that Acast are facilitating these open conversations and it was great to be connected to such fantastic podcasters too.”

Dan Snow, host of History Hit, said: “All of us experience mental health challenges at some point in our lives. I found it so useful listening to Caroline’s advice and will definitely adopt some of her methods for being more present, sleeping better and not letting stress and anxiety get out of control. Focusing on mental health, after the year we’ve all had, is really important.”

Caroline Foran, host of Owning It: The Anxiety Podcast, said: “My goal is to normalise mental health issues, to empower us all to get comfortable talking about the tricky stuff in life — so that the anxiety about what people will think of us, or the stigma that surrounds mental health, will start to dissolve. Podcasting is, in my opinion, the fastest and most effective route to achieving this goal and so I’m thrilled to join the brilliant Dan Snow’s History Hit for Mental Health Awareness Week.”

The conversation series launches today, all made possible by Acast’s dynamic ad insertion technology. Acast hosts more than 27,000 shows worldwide, with more than 65 million monthly listens in the UK alone.

As the door to normality slowly creaks open for us in the UK, there’s a lot to look forward to. And one of those things is a jam-packed summer of sport.

With everything from the delayed European Championship to the London Marathon to get stuck into, listeners will be hungry for sports and related content. Sport and Nutrition was Acast’s second most-listened to category in March, and interest shows no sign of slowing down.

Even before the Euros kick off, the world of football is a dramatic one both on and off the pitch. The European Super League proposal sent shockwaves through the footballing community in April, even ruffling BoJo’s feathers — but not so much that he actually brushed his hair before denouncing the plans.

And, with people rushing to get in shape for summer with the June 21 moment of freedom looming, they’ll also be turning to fitness and nutrition podcasts for tips and inspiration.

Acast is the home of great podcasts, so we’ve put together a few of our favourite shows to scratch the itch of every football fan or fitness freak.

Not Another Nutrition PodcastNot Another Nutrition Podcast

Martin MacDonald breaks down all things nutrition in this new show — minus the incomprehensible health jargon. This pod is perfect for those still green in their journey of wellness and fitness, providing sustainable advice to keep you on track with your goals. Listen now on Acast >>

Football Weekly pod artFootball Weekly

Our favourite pundits are back to deliver you your weekly dose of football discussion. This week Max Rushden discusses the ESL proposals, the end of José Mourinho’s tenure as Spurs manager, and the weekend’s Premier League and FA Cup games. Listen now on Acast >>

It wouldn’t be a health and wellness roundup if we didn’t include the health-conscious influencer queen herself, Deliciously Ella. Each week she interviews an expert to bring a little inspiration to your life — from gut health to mental health and anxiety, how to make sustainable changes, skincare, and so much more. talkSport DailytalkSPORT Daily

Taking it from the radio to your favourite podcast platform, talkSPORT Daily nails the biggest talking points of the day — with plenty of punchy personality and opinion. This week’s episode is headlined by Thierry Henry’s social media blackout and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel slamming the expansion plans for the Champions League. Listen now on Acast >>

I AM AthleteI AM Athlete

Since we’re talking “football”, we thought we’d be cheeky and take it stateside to our cousins across the pond. Ever wanted to be a fly on the wall in a sports locker room? Sit back with a front-row seat into the minds and madness of NFL Hall of Famers Brandon Marshall, Chad Johnson, Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder. Their raw and honest conversations tell their journey to the top. Listen now on Acast >>

Football, feminism and everything in betweenFootball, Feminism, and Everything in Between

We love a hybrid here at Acast and, as I’m sure you know, football has a tendency to be male-dominated — so this daddy-daughter podcast is refreshing. Alistair Campbell is joined by daughter Grace for a beautiful, cultural sandwich, merged with everything football and feminism. The hilarious duo add humour and opposing perspectives to taboo and touchy topics. Listen now on Acast >>

The Football Ramble was started in 2007 by Luke Moore, Marcus Speller, Pete Donaldson and Jim Campbell. The original four recorded in Luke’s flat and grew to become the most popular independent football show largely through word of mouth and listener enthusiasm. The Ramble was (and to this day remains) a genuine alternative to mainstream Football coverage – providing its listeners with fresh and uniquely hilarious takes on this often ridiculous sport.

Marcus Speller is one of the 4 original hosts of Football Ramble

Over the past three years, the Ramble has undergone some significant shifts. Starting in the summer of 2018, after about 10 years of weekly episodes, the Football Ramble began releasing shows daily and gradually welcomed four new presenters to its roster: Jules Breach (BT Sport, talkSPORT) and Andy Brassell (BT Sport, BBC) in the 2018/19 Season, and Kate Mason (Sky Sports) and Vithushan Ehantharajah (The Independent) in the 2019/20 Season. Since 2018, the Football Ramble has committed itself to diversifying its voice in a considered and thoughtful way. The show remains entertaining and fun, retaining its original intimacy and irreverence while also bringing football podcasting into the 21st Century.

“We felt it was really important for the largest independent football show in the UK to be genuinely representative of football fandom at large,” Luke enthuses. “We have also never been frightened of change or modernity.”

Jules Breach (BT Sport, talkSPORT) joined the podcast in the 2018/19 Season, and Kate Mason (Sky Sports) in the 2019/20 Season.

Welcoming Jules, Andy, Kate and Vish to the team was a conscious decision to expand and diversify the podcast’s scope – one that has enriched the Ramble’s feed. The Ramble entertains without shying away from the thornier topics, from tackling heavier issues such as racism and misogyny in football media and fan culture to ongoing feuds between Jules and Vish (as well as Pete’s never-ending procession of cryptic games).

“Vish and I got on instantly when we first met, we have a brother-sister type friendship,” Jules laughs. “On one Ramble he refused to sing the theme tune from The OC and let’s just say I hammered him for it, ever since then people think he’s scared of me and that I bully him – but it’s all love really.”

Vithushan Ehantharajah (The Independent) came onboard in the 2019/20 Season.

The Ramble’s eight hosts are united by their passion for football and a shared inability to take themselves too seriously. In amongst reactions to all the sublime and the ridiculous from the latest fixtures, you’ll find Jules teaching you swear words you didn’t even know existed and Andy somehow bringing everything back to his remarkably extensive knowledge of Dutch footballers-turned-rappers.

“Jules, Kate, Andy and Vish ‘get’ the Ramble. They always have, and the show is now the best it’s ever been,” Luke adds. “We feel really privileged to have been able to diversify the show’s voices, chiefly because they’re all so good and provide fresh and entertaining takes on the game we love.”

In this football show – like any chat with your mates – anything goes.

Listen to Football Ramble on the Stakhanov website, ACAST, and SPOTIFY.

‘Tis the season to reflect on our listening habits for the year and Pod Bible online has decided to do not one, but two articles on the best podcasts of 2020. This is because we are saying goodbye to our first ever Digital Editor, Jordan Rizzieri. Everyone at Pod Bible would like to wish Jordan the best and thank her once again for all her amazing work this year.

Jordan will be sharing her countdown of ‘The Top 10 Podcasts That Saved Me From Myself’ next week. But today, you’ll be hearing from Francesca Turauskis as the incoming Digital Editor.

Hello Pod Bible disciples, I thought it was time I introduced myself! I’m Francesca/Fran and I’m the new Digital Editor for Pod Bible. I also produce and host my own podcast and can often be found guesting and editing on others. But I wanted my first article to give you an insight to my podcast listening habits. I also wanted to capture some Christmas joy and hope for the future. So, I decided to do a Christmas Carol inspired list of podcast listening.

I have enlisted the help of Pod Bible Co-Founder and Magazine Editor, Adam Richardson. We talked about our favourite Ghosts of Pods Past, Pods Present and Pods Yet to Come. Or, in other words, our favourite limited series podcasts from 2020, the podcasts we’re listening to right now, and some new podcasts you’ll want to subscribe to for the future…

Podcast 2020 and Beyond

Ghosts of Pods Past

Fran: So many of my ‘best podcasts of 2020’ have been limited series, and I don’t have space for them all. But two in particular stuck with me: the second series of 13 Minutes to Moon and The Hidden Djinn.  This series of 13 Minutes to the Moon looked at the Apollo 13 mission. It was very highly produced, and mixed interviews, narration, actual audio from NASA archives and an epic music score by Hanz Zimmer. In very 2020 fashion, the host Dr. Kevin Fong left us on a cliffhanger when he literally joined the COVID response as a doctor.

From science to spiritualism, The Hidden Djinn was a mix of mythology and journalism about the djinn (Arabian spirits). It made me question the lines between reality and superstition, and the host Rabia Chaudry has a great storytelling voice as well.

Adam: Grounded with Louis Theroux. I was a bit sceptical at first as it was right at the beginning of lockdown when all the stuck-at-home celebs were making podcasts, but of course it’s brilliant. The other one I got really into was Ecstasy: The Battle of Rave. Ingenious storytelling with a mix of documentary and scripted episodes. We had Chris Warburton and Danny Brocklehurst on the Pod Bible Podcast to discuss it and it’s one of my favourite episodes of the year. Final shout goes to a podcast series that wasn’t released this year but had a surge in recommendations due to the death of George Floyd and subsequent interest in the Black Lives Matter movement. 1619 marked 400 years of the African American struggle against racism and made me realise just how little I knew about the subject. It encouraged me to do more in terms of educating myself, listening to others and working harder to give a platform to underrepresented voices.

Ghosts of Pods Present

Fran: Passport is a travel show about the little-known quirks of popular destinations, for example Helsinki’s city-size doomsday bunker, China’s Wild West town. This week’s seasonal episode takes us to the host’s own city: ‘Barcelona: The Magical Pooping Log of Xmas’! I’m also happy Outside Voices is back. It’s an independent show from the US sharing underrepresented voices in outdoor recreation. The episodes are really well researched and mix personal stories with narration and interviews. It released four shows in 2019 and then had a long hiatus, so I’m glad it hasn’t gone! I also always have Outside/In and Out There in my podcast queue (you may have guessed that I’m quite outdoorsy).

Adam: I’ve really enjoyed the Here Right Now podcast. It explores emerging worldwide trends and discusses how everyday life is changing by speaking to experts from a variety of industries. It’s a brand new independent show and I’m excited to see how it develops. I’ve also been amazed by the growth of daily news show The Smart 7. I listen to it on the way home from dropping my daughter at school and it fits the journey time perfectly. In terms of my regular go to pods, Off Menu, Football Ramble, The Adam Buxton Podcast, Say Your Mind and WrestleMe have kept me going and provided distraction from the endless bad news this year!

Ghosts of Pods Yet to Come

Fran: Away from podcasts (and when I’m not outdoors) I also work in a library. So I’m very excited about the concept of the Broccoli Book Club,  ‘A real book club’ in a podcast format. A lot of book podcasts rely on the interview format, so the discussion aspect of this is a pull for me. On that note, a show that is sure to have fun conversations is Totally Trans: Searching For The Trans Canon. It should be an interesting new look at popular culture and literature. Looking further into the future, an ‘As-yet-untitled six-part podcast’ by Hana Walker-Brown has been announced. She’s a great producer (check out both Anthems and The Beautiful Brain if you haven’t) so I’m keeping my eye out (ear out?) for this one…

Adam: Can we just call a truce on new podcasts for 2021 so I can keep up with everything that’s already out there? Please?!

What podcasts have you enjoyed this year? Are there any we should know about? Get in touch on Twitter and Instagram.

Historically and socially speaking, a lot of the media covering sports like football is saturated with male voices – resulting in women who have an interest in the sport not being taken seriously and are often subjected to misogynistic abuse by disgruntled male fans. While this is not a problem that can be easily solved solely through greater representation of women in football media, it is an important first step in the right direction. Alongside the restart of the Premier League in June 2020, The Football Ramble launched a brand new format and saw four new voices join the ranks as regular Ramble hosts: accomplished broadcaster Jules Breach (BT Sport, Optus, talkSPORT, Premier League Productions) and world-leading football expert Andy Brassell (BT Sport, BBC, Premier League Productions)both formerly of the eponymous Jules and Andy show elsewhere on the Football Ramble networkas well as presenter Kate Mason (Sky Sports) and journalist Vithushan Ehantharajah (The Independent). The Football Ramble now boasts the most diverse range of voices available in football podcasting and over 60% of episodes are now presented by women. As a result, the show has been able to host those difficult conversations, with both Kate and Jules sharing their perspectives and personal stories regarding their experiences as women in the industry.

Jules is a broadcast journalist and host of BT Sport’s Score, and has also presented for UEFA, Premier League and ESPN. Jules grew up in Brighton, as well as Mauritius and Jamaica. She has a wealth of experience with and knowledge of football, and her perspective as a successful WOC working in the football media world is absolutely invaluable. Kate is also a presenter, working for Sky Sports. A keen Spurs fan and long time Ramble listener, Kate brings sharp wit and a wealth of knowledge to the podcast as well as her skills as an adept and experienced host. She’s also hosting the Football Ramble Book Clubfeaturing intimate conversations with football’s most revered and exciting authorsas part of the Ramble’s new sister stream, Football Ramble Presents. Both Kate and Jules have used the Ramble’s platform to call attention to the difficulties and harassment that female presenters (and fans) face in a male-dominated spacean issue that’s all too often overlooked by the wider community. We had a chat with Kate and Jules about what representation means to them and their experience as part of the Football Ramble team.

What do you believe are the benefits of female representation in sports media?

JULES: “It’s so important to have strong, knowledgeable, good female journalists, presenters, hosts and contributors in sport. As a teenager I was obsessed with sport and knew it was an area I wanted to work in. I also loved the idea of working in the media, and always had a fascination, a sense of intrigue when it came to journalism, and just in generalI love talking, asking questions, and having good conversations with other humans.”

KATE: “Like Jules, I’ve loved sport my whole life and I want the world of sport to welcome everyone. That’s why I made it my mission to break into football broadcasting. I wanted to tell the stories that fascinate me and make everyonegirls and boys, young and old, and everyone in betweenfeel a part of that special atmosphere you only get when watching the world’s most popular and fascinating sport.”

JULES: “But growing up there were hardly any female sports personalities, no one I could identify with, so I was never sure whether it would even be a possible career path. Nowadays, there are so many inspiring women working in sport, especially football, and hopefully young girls will be encouraged to follow their lead.”

KATE: “I still remember so clearly the first time I heard a female voice commentating on Match of the Day: it was Jacqui Oatley, unbelievably only 11 years ago. She took so much heat and paved the way for all the women who came after her in football. When I’ve had people push back against giving me chances in the game‘We don’t want a woman’s voice on this’it’s made me work harder and want to live up to the example of all of those extraordinary women who came before. In fact, we’re getting to speak to one of them for Ramble Book Club at the start of the new season: Julie Welch, Fleet Street’s first female football writer. It’s wicked that the Ramble is sharing stories like hers.”

JULES: “Football is for everyone so there should be, and needs to be, more of a diverse representation in the media for the audience that indulge it. Ramble has done an amazing job putting together such a fun, diverse team, and me and Kate are proud to be the ladies flying the Ramble flag!”

How have you enjoyed working as a part of the Ramble team?

JULES: “I joined the team last summer and was super excited to be part of such a fun groupand to be the first regular female voice on the Ramble! The whole team welcomed me with open arms and have always encouraged me to be myself and show my personality. In the last year I’ve worked regularly with the incredibly knowledgeable and lovely Andy Brassell on a weekly pod looking into the wider stories in football as well as talking in depth about specific football moments or players. Now, in the new Ramble format, it has taken things to a whole other level! We’re one tight knit group of mates who just love football, get frustrated at football, and laugh about football, and that’s now what you get to hear Monday through Friday on the Ramble. It’s been the most fun and we are all so excited for the new season!”

KATE: “Getting to work with your mates is the dream isn’t it? It’s an honour to make the pod because I think we just get to represent the kind of people who are following football today, and who always have. But now more of a range of football fans are getting a voice. I mean, my mum was going down to Molineux in the 70s and she says she never had any problems, but you maybe wouldn’t have expected to see people like her in fanzines back in the day. At the Ramble it’s not just the people you hear on the pod every day, but all of the crew who make it fit together too who are such a fun, clever and welcoming bunch. There’s even a new canine member of the team too, isn’t there Jules?”

JULES: “Yes! Pablo! My new dog is the newest addition and he’s maybe everyone’s favourite… The team doesn’t treat me and Kate like girls. We’re just treated like other members of the Ramble family, like any other member of the team. And that’s how it always should be.”

What does it mean to produce a podcast? The Pod Bible gang wanted to bring podcast producers out from their editing bays and research caves to tell you why they’re passionate about creating podcasts and illustrate for listeners what a producer actually does. Without further ado, we’d like you to Meet the Producer – Tom Whalley.

POD BIBLE: What does a producer consider when taking on a new podcast job?
TOM WHALLEY: There’s a bunch of things. Firstly for me, it’s whether or not I have the time to do it. I help produce a bunch of podcasts for Stakhanov as well as The Huey Show for BBC 6Music, Kermode On Film, The Cycling Podcast, and I present my own monthly show called Service Course, so I’m pretty busy. I’ve got a toddler to look after, too. Secondly, I think about whether it will be a fun podcast to make. I really enjoy complex projects that involve a lot of sound design, so I’m always looking for podcasts where I can be really creative. Thirdly, I like to think about the potential of the podcast. Is there an audience for it? Can we grow it? And will it pay any of my bills?

PB: How do you strike a balance when producing content for shows that fall under a unifying theme, but are all unique?
TW: Consistent sound design across a range of shows can help link them together, even if the content is radically different. The same goes for featuring familiar voices across your full range of shows. It’s also vital to have your presenters talk about the other shows on the network or feed. There’s also an element of trust involved. Stakhanov have built a really strong audience who trust them to produce new and unique content. Once you’ve got that trust it’s not actually that difficult to give the audience something different on the feed. Just being on that feed is an endorsement in itself.

PB: How much preparation do you do before episodes are recorded?
TW: It totally depends on the show. We recently did a 3 part documentary series for Stakhanov called The Return Of The Premier League. That involved days of selecting music, searching for archive material, and scripting. With the regular Football Ramble Daily shows, it’s not something I need to prepare too much for, I just need to make sure I’ve got all the right clips and I’m across the latest football news. The real prep there is done by the presenters who absolutely know their stuff because they do such a lot of research and are ridiculously well informed.

PB: What is the relationship between a producer and the show’s host?
TW: It’s a pragmatic one. I’ve worked with too many hosts to mention over the years and you work with each one in a slightly different way. I think you just need to work out what your presenter needs and work out how best to facilitate that. The main thing, whatever the relationship is like, is to build up trust. Back in my local radio days, I once had a presenter who trusted me so little that she thought I was waging some kind of psychological war against her. When there’s just 2 of you in a studio at 1am and that’s the kind of vibe you’ve created then things are not going to go well. Blimey, they did not go well that time.

PB: How do you experience other podcasts as a listener? Can you turn off your editing ear and just enjoy shows, or do you always tune in to the things you would have done differently yourself?
TW: I absolutely love listening to other podcasts and it’s a massive source of inspiration for me. I love hearing different production styles and then thinking about how they were done. Occasionally I’ll hear something where I spot an obvious edit, or the levels are out, or they just let a piece run on too long (sometimes this is when I’m listening to my older stuff), but 9 out of 10 times I’m hearing tricks that I want to emulate myself. I’ve learned a lot from shows like Radiolab, Science-ish, Ear Hustle, Crimetown, Atlanta Monster, 30 for 30, and Beef & Dairy Network.

PB: What is the most valuable lesson you have learned as a podcast producer?
TW: It’s all about working with people who understand podcasts. There are too many people who think “I should have a podcast” but they don’t listen to any other pods and are not part of the podcast community. I think you’ve got to really live and breathe podcasting in order to be successful.

PB: Do you like to have constant collaboration throughout the process of producing a podcast, or do you prefer your roll to be siloed?
TW: For me the hardest part of doing creative work is listening to feedback but it’s honestly the most valuable thing you can have when making podcasts. I like to be able to work alone to some degree but my work benefits so much for having people cast a fresh set of ears over it. Sometimes that can mean you do 10 versions of a podcast before you finally hit the version that is ready to publish, but it makes the end product so much better.

PB: What is something as a podcast producer you haven’t tried yet but would like to?
TW: I guess the only thing I’ve really yet to do is fiction. I don’t think I’d be any good at writing it but I’d love to bring some great fiction to life. In fact I’ve just had a couple of conversations about a really great comedy script so watch this space.

To say this has been an unprecedented year for the team behind Football Ramble Daily would be an understatement. As listenership has continued to increase through the football season, the Stakhanov production has implemented a number of successful initiatives to cement themselves at the forefront of the sports podcasting landscape worldwide.

With four hosts and two extra collaborators filling out last season’s roster of three weekly shows, June 2019 saw a monumental change to the show’s output. The Football Ramble became Football Ramble Daily, with a whole new roster of shows and hosts for listeners to enjoy. Three shows a week became six – with bonus episodes being continually rolled out throughout the season – and their group of hosts expanded, as established broadcasters Jules Breach and Jonathan Wilson joined the fold alongside frequent collaborator Andy Brassell.

This presented a unique opportunity to adapt their shows, honing in on their unique strengths. The irreverent and light-hearted Ramble shows remain, as does their European sister show On The Continent. The team also added interview shows, with ‘Ramble Meets…’ and ‘Fantasy Five-a-side’ rounding out the Wednesday releases and ‘The Blizzard’, where expert guests relive a classic match of their choosing, filling the Saturday slot.

One show that has enjoyed real success as it continually hones its output is ‘Jules & Andy’, where Jules Breach and Andy Brassell present a magazine-style, considered look at the week’s overarching football stories. It offers a broader look at stories beyond the regular ninety minutes on the pitch, drawing on the unique expertise of both hosts.

As September 2019 arrived, attention soon turned to writing and preparing Ramble Live 2019, the live show tour featuring the four original Football Ramble hosts. The 19-date tour took them all over England and across the east coast of North America. The hosts advertised the tour on Football Ramble Daily episodes, as well as during guest appearances on a variety of other radio networks, while a tailored mix of organic and paid social media advertising encouraged listeners to buy tickets.

The crowd was in fine voice throughout and made the hosts feel as if they’d never been away. Jim Campbell remembers even the tiny nuances getting cheers of appreciation:

“Things would get laughs, or get a cheer of recognition, that we just say among ourselves. They’re just phrases we use that aren’t even supposed to be jokes, but they see what the audience what our listenership has picked up on. You feel like they really know us well.”

The North American shows proved the most humbling of all, with fans traveling thousands of miles or rearranging international trips to be there. Listeners came with gifts from their hometowns, or with pieces of Football Ramble memorabilia from years gone by. This momentous run of American shows was a first for a UK-based football podcast.

As 2020 came, the network continued to put out the varied range of shows their listeners continued to enjoy. From ‘At The Match’ specials full of on-location audio from some of the biggest matches in German football to interviews with British radio royalty like Mark Pougatch and Dotun Adebayo, the network enjoyed immersing itself in a wealth of football stories.

That was until the middle of March where, as the media landscape and the entire nation enters unprecedented territory amidst the impacts of Covid-19, a change of approach was needed. The entire Stakhanov office switched to remote working to remain in line with government advice and to establish remote recording facilities. The move has proved largely seamless, as shows are still being released to their regular schedules and remote recording equipment has been sent to hosts across all of Stakhanov’s shows. Naturally, the suspension of world football was an alarming development, but Football Ramble Daily still has ample to discuss. The time-sensitive shows have taken on a slightly different feel, as updates of the volatile situation within the game are mixed with less time-sensitive, often nostalgic content.

This has allowed the show to serve a purpose beyond updating its listeners of the current climate; the network’s shows have become a place for people to escape the worrying times for forty-five minutes or so and enjoy irreverent discussion about something else. To that end, the recently expanded Patreon offering has proved a huge hit. As well as allowing listeners to financially contribute to Football Ramble Daily in these trying times, it has fostered an even deeper connection with the listeners. The platform lets listeners sign up for a wide range of bonus content exclusive to the platform, from extra weekly podcast episodes to behind-the-scenes vlogs from the various hosts.

Clearly, continuing a successful football podcast network in a time of cancelled sport and no public gatherings is not an ideal situation, though Football Ramble Daily have adapted their output to suit the times and it remains an enjoyable, irreverent and often heartfelt listen. Click here to listen to the show, or search ‘Football Ramble Daily’ in your podcast provider.

Stakhanov is a podcast production company we’ve had the pleasure of dealing with regularly since Pod Bible began. One of our regular contacts over the past few months has been Blandine Hoge, a Production Assistant who is coming to the end of her internship with Stakhanov before heading to university. In today’s blog post Blandine offers her reflections on her time working with the prolific pod producers.

It was the 25th of November of last year. I was sitting in a Cafe Nero in Edinburgh, it was a Sunday and I was barely halfway through a 2000 word essay on the Faerie Queene due at noon the next day. Needless to say I was procrastinating. Big time. When I decided to contact Stakhanov that day, it was a complete shot in the dark. I’d heard of them through YouTuber Jaackmaate’s podcast, Jaackmaate’s Happy Hour, which is produced and recorded by Stakhanov. Stakhanov is a podcast production company based in London, it works with such notable shows as Football Ramble Daily, Berkhamsted Revisited and The Offensive. At the time, when I sent that email, I was certain I would not hear back. Mainly because I’d mentioned in the email that I was a fan of Jack’s show, which made me certain that they’d think I was a crazy stalker and send my email straight to trash. And yet—in early December—I was both surprised and overjoyed to see that not only did they email me back, but they also wanted me to come in for two weeks in July. By June, two weeks became seven and I was very excited to get started.

Since I’d never had a job before I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I wasn’t sure what work they’d want me to do, how strict the hours would be (I’m a chronic oversleeper), what I was and wasn’t allowed to wear (this was very important to me as a borderline goth), etc. Meeting Jon and Luke (two of the three owners of Stakhanov) for the first time was extremely nerve-wracking. Luckily for me they turned out to be very nice and extremely laid back people. During that initial meeting, they talked me through what they expected from me and showed me around the Stakhanov studio. The studio itself is absolutely beautiful, I was very impressed by it. I‘d seen parts of it before in Happy Hour’s YouTube clips and the specs were remarkable—especially compared to my station’s tech back in St. Andrews. Jon and Luke were very receptive to even my silliest questions and insisted that they wanted this experience to be as valuable as possible for me.

Over the course of my seven weeks, I ended up working on quite a variety of projects—both small and big. On my first day, Jon asked me to find out more about football commentary audio rights and whether a purchasable license for those rights even existed.

The next day, I remember sitting in Starbucks, researching audio rights on my laptop, frantically texting my Dad about how I was totally out of my depth. I felt like I was going in the completely wrong direction, certain I’d turn up the next day and be forced to waffle my way through my presentation. Luckily enough it turns out I was on the right track and just panicking for no reason at all, as per usual. Crisis averted. While it was quite nerve wracking, this first project did teach me that I had to be more confident in my abilities and leave my self-doubt in the dust.

During my second week at Stakhanov, I had the opportunity to follow Jon and Pete (the third owner of Stakhanov) to several meetings. I was a bit nervous and ended up arriving at the meeting spot about half an hour early. In the morning, we had three meetings one after the other with various agents. I acted as a fly on the wall, sitting and listening to the creative process unfurl. I really enjoyed watching the discussion, following the ideas being thrown back and forth. The opportunities presented to Stakhanov were inspiring, and I loved listening to the podcast ideas, the potential collaborations with important names in all sorts of spheres. Later that afternoon, Jon took me with him to meet Stakhanov’s PR agent. It was equally as interesting to sit in on this meeting, as the majority of my PR knowledge comes primarily from Agatha Raisin. We met the agent in an uber trendy hotel cafe, she had a messy bun and looked effortlessly cool. On first impression, very Agatha Raisin after all. But once the meeting began, I started to realise that I had no idea what moves a company needs to consider to both build their brand and keep their image pristine. I enjoyed following the conversation, chipping in sometimes when I felt like my input would be semi-valuable. This day of meetings made me realise that, as dumb as this is going to sound, there is a lot more to a company than I anticipated. Wild.

During my internship, I got to do a lot of very interesting and creative projects. My favorites were working on podcast pitches for two of the companies that we spoke to during the aforementioned meetings, which was very cool indeed. I really had a lot of fun coming up with those ideas and I hope they end up getting made, we’ll see if the companies like them . I also was in charge of coming up with several concepts for lifestyle, fashion and pop culture podcasts. I loved having the opportunity to do creative work and I really appreciate the trust that Jon put in my opinion. Hopefully that wasn’t a mistake on his part!

Before I leave you, dearest reader, I find myself compelled to reflect on what I’ve learned throughout this experience. Because that’s what one does when one writes about an experience. One has to reflect. So this is for your benefit, by the way. You’re welcome. Let’s get into it then, shall we?

The first lesson I’ve learned—and please don’t cringe too hard—is you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Yikes, I know, but there’s a reason why people say it. I’ve always been quite shy and as a result, I felt extremely uncomfortable reaching out to people or companies via email. I’m not sure why it stressed me out so much, but at the end of the day taking a chance will always pay off. The worst you’ll suffer is a “no” and, here’s a life hack, you’ll more likely just never hear back, so no actual straight up rejection! If you’re a student and you’re trying to figure out how to find internships, your best bet is to just fire out your CV to as many people as possible—even if you think they’ll never get back to you. Remember, it only takes one yes in a sea of no.

The second lesson I’d like to impart to you is the importance of creative writing and good writing skills. I did not expect just how useful my writing skills would be and writing actually became my main work while I was at Stakhanov. I was in charge of providing feedback on all written copy, from podcast synopses to tweets. I also started to write the monthly Football Ramble Daily Patreon blog post, which I will continue doing at university. Writing is very easy to learn, all it takes is a basic understanding of grammar and practice. Seriously. Like playing an instrument or running a 5K (which I will never do), it takes practice to hone and improve your writing skills. There are also a lot of writing courses and classes available online, which in my opinion is the best way to improve as the hardest part of writing is motivating yourself to write for the sake of writing. My mom has been telling me for years that I need to focus on my writing, and yeah. As much as I hate to admit it, mother knows best time and time again.

On a more serious note, my overall experience interning for Stakhanov was immensely positive. I’m very happy that I took a shot in the dark and sent that email all the way back in November. I guess it all worked out in the end! As I’m writing this, it’s the final days of my seven weeks with Stakhanov. It’s all gone by so fast, I still can’t believe it’s coming to an end. I never really felt like an ‘intern’ when I was at Stakhanov, which I think is really worth noting. Obviously, my workload was very different from my colleagues, but I felt like a part of the company and not somebody whose sole purpose—without trying to be too cliche—was to do the work no one liked or always get coffee for everyone. Instead I felt like my input was both valued and heard. Interning with Stakhanov helped me gain a lot of confidence in myself and my abilities, it was an absolutely invaluable experience. While I am looking forward to going back to university, I am sad that it’s already ending. This year will be my last at university and while I don’t know where life will take me, I know that these skills and lessons I’ve learned during my time here will follow me for years to come. There are very exciting opportunities in the future—for both me and for Stakhanov, so stay tuned.
