Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I’m Daisy Mack, I help people find their breath as a way to deal with the stress of everyday life. Spiritual Mixtape the podcast is all about exploring life’s ups and downs and the lessons we learn along the way. Each episode is like a different track off your favourite mixtape. It’s meant to make you feel something – ideally better.

In Spiritual Mixtape, we talk about everything from dealing with change and finding your purpose, to the little moments that bring us joy or challenge us to grow. It’s a place for honest conversations about the real stuff we all go through.

My goal is to create a space where we can share stories, reflect on life’s journey, and find some tools to help navigate this mystery we call life.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

It was so long ago I can’t recall. I got into podcasts early on. Around 2006, maybe, before Saltburn era! And back then I can only imagine the spectrum of weird things I would have listened to. I think there would have been a ton of music related podcasts, but spiritual woo woo stuff. So not a lot has changed.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I wanted to make spirituality accessible. There seem to be more gatekeepers than ever with something that should be free to all. I want to share what I know in the hope that the listeners can benefit from the tools I value, like breathwork and meditation. As well as those tough life lessons. My failures have often turned into my greatest assets, but it didn’t feel that way at the time and it would have been comforting to know I wasn’t alone at the time. We are never alone.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

This is a long list, but here are my two faves. I love The Imperfects, it’s like listening to your siblings giving you life advice. A friend recommended it and each episode I have two thoughts “I wish I knew that sooner” and “If I can make my podcast half that good I would be winning”. For astrology there is no one better than Molly McCord. I think in life there are some people who hold a frequency so that others can find them and level up to them. Like being on the same wavelength. What an amazing opinion to have of someone you have never met.

You recently started Junior Zen Zone – can you explain how you create these episodes differently for younger listeners?

Teaching young ones to meditate is a joy. They are naturally more intuitive because they trust their imagination and their senses. When you suggest an idea like “giving your worries to the stars” it’s easy for them to accept. In their mind’s eye they see it and it feels real to them. If I use clear imagery like forests or space, like telling a bedtime story, they slip straight into a meditative state. They have a single point of focus and I try to keep it with breath cues and a fun story.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

That’s a great question. Each episode of the pod is a different tool to help the listener grow, heal or feel better in some way. I always find it interesting what episodes touch people. For me, I would say episode 1 is the perfect intro. However, I had the most emails and comments about the grief episode “how to reframe loss as gain“. The reality is if you have found Spiritual Mixtape you are probably on a journey where endings have played a significant role, so that episode does feel fitting.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

Come and meet me on socials, stan store or the Spiritual Mixtape site. Beyond the podcast I love to give things away to my mailing list so add your details there too.

Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard, but we think you should have. The Happiness Challenge is an award-nominated show test-driving the best happiness habits that science has to offer. The recent series shares short ‘happiness hacks’, asking listeners to try tasks such as writing a letter to your future self, to pondering what ‘connection’ means to you. Host Klaudia Mitura tells us more about the inspirations for the podcast and how to start listening to the show…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

My name is Klaudia Mitura and I am a work psychologist and the Learning and Development Manager at the Science Museum Group, with a purpose to boost happiness in the workplace. I love exploring new scientific insights, but find these can often feel overly complex, with no real application to the realities of our daily life. I therefore started The Happiness Challenge podcast in 2020 with a mission to test-drive the best happiness hacks that science has on offer, and share what I have learnt.

What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?

The first podcast that I ever listened to – and is still one of my favourites – is Squiggly Careers; a podcast by two inspirational women who share tips for having a successful career. I love this podcast because it is fast, practical and effective, helping me to navigate the often confusing world of career development.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

Like so many others, back in 2020 the pandemic cut me off from family and work which was very tough – so I decided to use my training as a Psychologist to discover what science can tell us about the art of happiness. In other words, I knew that I could not make any of my circumstances go away but I just wanted to find out how to feel a little bit happier, even for a few minutes a day.

I called a friend who was also going through a challenging time, and I invited her to go on a happiness journey with me by practising one science-based happiness habit a week. To be honest, it was my friend who really wanted to learn about podcasting so we agreed to record our conversations by sitting in our wardrobes (for better acoustics of course!)

That’s how my experiment of applying the scientific research on happiness to my daily ups and downs turned into a podcast: The Happiness Challenge.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

I like knowledge based podcasts that give me practical tips to make change that I am after. Squiggly Careers as mentioned is definitely one, followed by the CIPD podcast and Tilted: A Lean In podcast. I often listen to podcasts when commuting to work so they have to be the right length with something practical for me to think about.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

I would love to interview Shawn Achor, researcher and the author of the book The Happiness Advantage who with a huge wealth of research shows that happiness leads to success not the other way around as we tend to believe. Shawn’s book was one of the first ones I picked up on the science of happiness many years back and definitely shaped my thinking about fulfilment in life.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

The format of the podcast needs to work for you so don’t be afraid to come up with a format that suits your personal purpose. It took me some time to figure out the right structure for me but once I landed on the current format of publishing three linked episodes where I am speaking to a leading expert, putting their tips to the test and sharing my findings (and feelings), I truly became the explorer I always wanted to be!

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Start with my new Happiness Reset Campaign, which focuses on 25 bitesize practical, science-based hacks to create more happiness at work, in relationships and in your own skin. You can spend only a few minutes a day listening, and then try out something practical and see the results straight away. If you like this, I also recommend other related past episodes so you can dive deeper into topics that interest you.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard of yet. This time we’re learning more about the OYNB (One Year, No Beer) Podcast and speaking to host Ruari Fairbairns…

How are you and what’s your podcast about?

I am Ruari Fairbairns, the founder of OYNB (One Year No Beer). Our organization is dedicated to transforming the world’s relationship with alcohol through mindset changes and behavioural adjustments. We firmly believe that taking a break from alcohol is the key to unlocking all other aspects of wellness. At OYNB, we view a break from alcohol as a catalyst for personal transformation. It is a powerful tool that allows individuals to reassess their relationship with alcohol and make positive changes in their lives. We have witnessed countless success stories where individuals have experienced significant improvements in their physical and mental well-being, relationships, and overall productivity by embracing a break from alcohol.

One of the ways we inspire people to take a break from alcohol and redefine their relationship with it is through our podcast. The podcast features a mix of guests, including OYNB members, success stories, and experts in the field. Through these episodes, we not only share personal experiences but also delve into the scientific principles that underpin our programs to inspire people to change their relationship with alcohol. We collaborate with researchers who provide valuable insights and help individuals optimize every area of their lives, making alcohol become irrelevant in the process.

Our programs are designed to empower individuals with the tools, resources, and support needed to successfully navigate their journey of alcohol abstinence or moderation. We incorporate scientific research into our programs, working with esteemed researchers who study behaviour change and wellness optimisation. This evidence-based approach ensures that individuals receive practical guidance and strategies to break free from alcohol’s grip and lead a healthier, more fulfilling life.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

In the 1980s, before podcasts became a popular medium, I discovered the world of audio inspiration through tapes. My parents were involved in a unique way, as they would provide me with weekly tapes. Among my favourites were the tapes featuring Tony Robbins and Zig Ziglar, whose words and wisdom deeply inspired me. I would listen to these tapes repeatedly, finding immense value and motivation in their messages.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

As I entered my early teens, the emergence of podcasting presented an incredible opportunity to reach a wider audience and deliver valuable content free of charge. This resonated with the core values of what we aim to achieve here at OYNB. Our mission is to transform the world’s relationship with alcohol, and making our resources accessible and free plays a vital role in achieving that goal.

The podcast platform became an integral part of our efforts to help and support people on their journey towards a healthier relationship with alcohol. It allowed us to reach a global audience and provide a wealth of valuable content, enabling individuals to explore new perspectives, gain insights, and find encouragement in their pursuit of change.

Offering our podcast has been a wonderful way to deliver value, support, and inspiration to people who are seeking to make a positive change in their lives. Through this medium, we aim to empower individuals and provide them with the tools and knowledge needed to transform their relationship with alcohol. In essence, my early exposure to motivational tapes laid the foundation for my passion for podcasts. It ignited a desire to reach and help others, leading to the inception of our own podcast as a means to create a positive impact.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

One podcast that has captivated my interest is Diary of a CEO. The host’s candid conversations and personal stories make for a truly engaging experience. Another podcast I absolutely love is Huberman Lab. The scientific depth and knowledge shared in each episode are truly fascinating. Additionally, I am a fan of The Drug Science Podcast, which provides valuable information and discussions surrounding drug-related topics.

As someone with a keen interest in neuroscience, I appreciate podcasts that delve into this field. One such podcast that stands out to me is The High Performance Podcast. It offers valuable insights on optimising performance and achieving personal growth.

OYNB has a massive community, do you have any tips for podcasters wanting to build their own community?

Consistency is a crucial factor that applies to various aspects of life, including podcasting. Maintaining a consistent release schedule and consistently delivering high-quality content are key to keeping your audience engaged and hungry for more.

Guest outreach should not be underestimated. While it may be challenging to secure prominent guests, the effort is undoubtedly worth it. Collaborating with influential guests can significantly elevate your podcast’s credibility and reach. Consider partnering with a reputable agency that specialises in guest outreach to expedite the process and help you achieve a breakthrough. This support can accelerate your growth and enhance your podcast’s reputation. When inviting notable guests, ensure that their expertise aligns with your podcast’s main topic or the message you aim to convey. Back up your discussions with reliable sources, such as researchers or authoritative books. Emphasise that your information is based on credible and well-founded references, which adds credibility and reinforces the value of your content. By maintaining consistency, pursuing guest outreach, and substantiating your discussions with credible sources, you can strengthen your podcast’s reputation and attract a loyal audience.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

‘How OYNB was created’ will give you the best introduction to how everything started, what we are trying to do and the greater and wider impact that we want to come up with.

Bump, Baby & Beyond was initially launched in January 2020 and since the it has had an amazing reception, with nearly 400,000 listens. There are now over 30 episodes covering a wide range of issues around pregnancy and birth. Topics include practical health such as  ‘Understanding colic and how to cope’ and ‘Giving birth during COVID-19 & what to expect‘. It also speaks to mums about their personal stories, such as Faye who has had two children via IVF.

We asked podcast host, and mum of two, Hollie (@HolliePlus) to tell us how it feels to be part of this award-nominated podcast.

Hollie, how does it feel to be nominated for Publisher Podcast Awards?

It feels incredible! I’m so proud to work with Emma’s Diary on #BumpBabyandBeyond and to see it recognised amongst some other incredible names is just brilliant. It’s always a funny feeling when you see facts and figures, which show people are actually listening to the podcast. It’s really quite amazing and the Emma’s Diary team really deserve the nomination for all the hard work they do to make the podcast so beneficial to new parents and pregnant women.

Hollie host of Bump Baby and Beyond

How do you feel the podcast supports new parents and pregnant women? Why do you feel it’s important?

I wish this podcast was around when I was pregnant a couple of years ago, because pregnancy and being a new parent is like learning a new language – without a manual! The podcast talks about the good, the bad and the ugly of pregnancy but from real people’s experiences. Not from a textbook or from a third-person perspective. I get to talk to real women who have gone through or are going through a whole host of different pregnancies and births. The stories are incredible and can help parents feel emotionally prepared, physically ready, not alone AND it’s also a really entertaining listen.

It’s important that mums-to-be and new parents don’t feel isolated during one of the most amazing but challenging times in their lives. From the trials and tribulations of breastfeeding to buggies, baby names and unexpected births, we talk about it all. I feel like Bump Baby and Beyond is like having a friend round for a cup of tea, nothing is off-limits and we’ll give it to you exactly how it is but help hold your hand when things get tough.

Baby bump and beyond

“To be shortlisted for not one but two awards after launching our podcast channel just 12 months ago is incredibly exciting, and also demonstrates just how important it is to have real parents talking and sharing their own experiences of pregnancy and motherhood (the amazing, the good, the bad and the leaking boobs).

At Emma’s Diary we’ve been supporting pregnant women and new parents for almost 30 years in a variety of formats, from a printed pregnancy publication to our website, app…And now, podcast. As we travel into 2021 we look forward to welcoming more mums to speak on our channel to provide our audience of women with the peer-to-peer support they are in need of.”

Pod. section in the magazine gives a quick shout out to shows of that ilk, Have You Heard? aims to go deeper in an effort to spread awareness for shows that deserve more exposure! We recently heard from Taylor James,  creator the interview podcast about mental health, The Waffle Shop. He talks about podcasting to help cope with anxiety, his love of a certain Pod Bible founder’s podcast, and going to see Adele with his mum…

Taylor James

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

My name’s Taylor James and I’m the host of The Waffle Shop Podcast, which was created to help myself open up about my mental health, coping mechanisms and those minor inconveniences that just wind me up. Don’t get me started on wasps, work of the Devil! It sounds quite selfish but I’ve learnt so much about myself by just listening to others waffle about their journey. I now have a bit of a platform that encourages others to open up and waffle about how they’re feeling and even made some lifelong friends in the process!

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

One of the first podcasts I ever listened to was Off the Beat & Track with Stu Whiffen, I genuinely fell in love with it, I’m a bit of a music nerd so to have the chance to have an insight to some iconic peoples record collection was a bit of a dream come true for me.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

The Waffle Shop actually started as part of my therapy for my anxiety and PTSD after nearly losing my mum to an operation gone wrong. I did the typical thing of bottling everything up and ended up in a very vulnerable position. With the help of my sister and best mate I reached out and got the help I needed….and then COVID hit!

Instead of running the risk of going backwards I decided to get out of my comfort zone and give it a go, its safe to say that it was the best decision I ever made as its completely turned my life around.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

I’d again say Off the Beat & Track with Stu, I love the relaxed vibe and how it feels like I’m sat in the room having a beer with my mates talking about all things music and the impact it has. I think I’d also say Table Manners with Jessie Ware and her brilliant mum, I haven’t been able to see my mum for nearly a year due to restrictions so it has that ability to really feel like home. These two are definitely my biggest inspirations I love a light hearted chat where anything goes and hearing people’s stories and the basics like what food they eat and music they listen to.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

My dream guest would have to be Adele. If I was able to have a waffle with the legend herself I think I could die a very happy man
I have a strong connection to her music and she was the last gig me and my mum went to together before everything happened.
I genuinely love everything about her and that laugh is just infectious, so I’m not closing The Waffle Shop until she’s joined me, just throwing out there into the universe….

What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned so far as a podcaster?

The biggest thing I’ve learnt is to not take myself too seriously, we’re living in a very serious world at the minute but The Waffle Shop has allowed me to really break down a lot of walls for me. Its allowed me to really express myself, my emotions and completely ripped me out of my comfort zone! If you had said a year ago I’d be hosting a top 10 podcast and hosting live episodes to over 4000 people I would have laughed straight in your face. It’s allowed me to learn so much about myself and my mental health as well as show me that it’s ok to not be ok. It’s basically free therapy! Who doesn’t love a freebie!

What episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

I’d say the perfect introduction to The Waffle Shop would be my episode with the incredible Pandora, she’s a DJ on Heart FM with the most incredible story. We clicked straight away! We’ve both used a lot of pain and hardship and used it as motivation to just keep going. Hearing stories like Pandora’s really gives me that fire in my belly and gives that reassurance that yes life can be incredibly difficult at times but it doesn’t define who you are or what you’re capable of!

Where can Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

I’m a bit rubbish with keeping up with all the different forms of social media however I’m most active over on Instagram at @waffleshoppodcast! Always up for having a waffle so feel free to drop me a DM! I’m also available on all streaming platforms so grab your headphones and join me for some waffle with some of my favourite people!
