Did I Ever Tell You The One About…MF DOOM is a podcast celebrating and documenting the life and work of MF DOOM, one of hip-hop’s greatest artists. This in-depth series has been created with the approval of DOOM’s widow and estate. The podcast is helmed by rapper-turned-podcaster MC Serch, a childhood friend of DOOM, and features contributions from DOOM’s friends, family and collaborators. The first two episodes of Did I Ever Tell You The One About… MF DOOM are now live and arrive ahead of the 1st anniversary of DOOM’s death (31st October). Subsequent instalments will be made available each week. The podcast is soundtracked by DOOM’s widely-celebrated music and presented using Immersive Sound Design, 5.1 stereo sound. You can catch the interview with MC Serch below!

MC Serch, why was it important to you personally to preserve the legacy of MF Doom with this all access podcast series?

It was not just myself.  My partner and wife Chantel and I were compelled to tell this story because we felt a sense of loss of not only someone I grew up with and lost touch with, but my wife lost her friend in some ways.  DOOM and Chantel (and DJ Subroc) were close in those days. So for both of us this became a way to get close to DOOM again by learning about him through those who knew him best.  I am so thankful to all the contributors who shared their stories with us.

MF’s nuanced and intricate lyrics coupled with smirk-inducing flows rapidly earned him legendary status in Hip-Hop. With a large list of friends, family and collaborators willing to contribute to the pod-series, what was the process of knitting and curating these individual accounts into a cohesive story like?

It is a great deal of work, but we have an amazing team around us.  DJ Eclipse who Co-Executive Produced this with us, is a family friend, and someone who is extremely detail focused.  So being able to bounce ideas of episodes off of him, and him giving me feedback on who we should reach out to was critical.  Bret “Epic” Mazur, who is also a family friend, has become the go to sound design producer in Hollywood and was so helpful at crafting the stories.  Nick Davila, our young gun in the sound design studio is a DOOM fan, pure and simple.  So for him (and us) he was so helpful in asking us questions about DOOM and his life.  So it helped us in gaining insight as to what should go where and when.  Every member of this team gave myself and Chantel the right questions to ask, which in turn helped craft the episodes.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the sound design on this podcast is seemingly a reflection of the respect and admiration you have for your subjects. How important was the time spent and quality of the sound design in creating an immersive and nostalgic experience?

Our company, The Timeless Podcast Company, is built on the fact that we want to tell our stories in immersive sound design.  We spent years researching how drivers in your headphones work, how sound design in cars works, how if you wanted to listen to this in your home theatre or through your SONOS, how that would work.  Our shows our about preserving the history of the greatest to bless the mic, and do it in a way that not only tell their story better than anyone, but bring you into their world through theatre of the mind.  For the most part they came up during a time where their stories and even career was dwarfed because the genre had not caught up to the importance of the culture.  So the sound design is so important to me and my partner.

I remember reading The Source when Nas’s Illmatic came out.  He received 5 mics and the review made me so proud to have a small part in the making of that album (as the Executive Producer).  The only critique they had of the album was that it was too short.  It left them wanting more.  Fast forward to when I read the comments and the ratings for our podcasts and they give us high marks for the storytelling and I read that it was not only great storytelling but the sound design was EPIC, I get a similar feeling.  It’s that nod to the work our team has done in bringing the fans of DOOM, and Big Daddy Kane, the ability to feel them, not just hear their stories.

How do you think ‘artistry’ in Hip-Hop has changed over the decades. Do you think mastery of craft is still as important these days in creating masterpieces such as MadVillainy?

The conversation about the changing of the artistry is getting old, for me personally.  I don’t see a change in “artistry”.  The craft of telling stories as an emcee is not only alive and well, but in my opinion, better than it has ever been.  The mastery of wordplay in the hands of so many talented emcees today, in my opinion, is double what it once was.  Back in the day I could name maybe 30 great emcees.  Today, I can name those same 30 plus another 60 or more.  All with as much talent, with their words, their effort and their artistry.  We were extremely fortunate to come up when we did – to see the early creators of intricate word flow and posture, whose lyrics then transformed those who make music today.  We live in a different time and in these times you either grow or die.  I choose to grow and accept the change, and look for the best in the talent out there, opposed to be grumpy and complain.

What do your listeners have to look forwards to over the coming months?

The upcoming episodes of The Did I Ever Tell You The One About…MF DOOM are F**KING AMAZING and will blow fans away!!!

We also have our Breaking Anonymity podcast with Veteran Music Journalist Kyle Eustice and myself talking recovery over addiction through a 12 step program.  We speak with amazing people like Royce Da 5’9″, Brandon Novak, Danny Boy O’Connor, Slaine (to name a few) about not only about overcoming addiction but how a 12 step program saved their lives.  And my interview podcast “Serch Says” where I do one-on-one interviews with people like Chris Rock, Questlove, Neal Brennan, Bun B, Joseph Sikora (Tommy from the hit TV show “Power”) and many others.)

Alex Lopategui is joined by The Breaking Atoms Podcast for an exclusive interview. Rap Scientists Sumit Sharma (SS) and Chris Mitchell (CM) deconstruct their process into creating the ‘Blueprint series’ as well as their approach to archiving the truth about Hip Hop culture, issues and politics. With clinical analysis and expert guests, the curation of this podcast is unbelievable. Catch the interview below!

I am intrigued to understand what it is that makes ‘The Blueprint’ so central to Hip Hop history and what made you focus on the record for the series?

SS: Following on from our Reasonable Doubt album, it felt right to close the Jay-Z chapter with this album because it was the project that solidified his name in the history books. Commercially, The Blueprint was a step-change from the sound that was prevalent at the time. For me, I always look at it as the Illmatic of the 2000s. This album is more than the hit records and timeless quotables. It’s about the other cast members. Blueprint brought back the sound of the golden age, but a 2.0. In Just Blaze, Kanye West, Young Guru, Kyambo’ Hip Hop’ Joshua, and Bink, we see a group of individuals, all of whom have had a profound impact on Hip Hop. When we talk about history, it’s important to recognise more than Jay-Z.

I think the word that comes to mind when listening to the series is ‘Curation’. The vast amount of content and guest features is astonishing. What was your ethos behind the series and how did you manage to succinctly include it all?

SS: In an age where ‘fake news’ is an actual phrase, it’s incredibly important to carry on to ensure that history is written or curated correctly. Our ethos is to approach this as journalists. We move with integrity and authenticity, and our goal is to focus on the subject, not us. Me and Chris are merely conduits to the information.

CM: Putting a narrative documentary together is not easy, especially when you consider we did the Reasonable Doubt series in 2 months and this Blueprint series in a month and a half. But this is where our knowledge and audio prowess comes into play. There’s a lot that gets left on the cutting room floor. Like any author, they have to make editorial decisions into what gets included and what doesn’t. The thought process is generally ‘does this add more value to the story, and does it fit the narrative arch?’

SS: We are truly grateful to every contributor because it’s their perspective that makes the documentaries so riveting. We share any wins with them.

Cross pollination of excellent talent surrounding an artist in theory leads to something quite special. Kanye West, JustBlaze and Biggs just to name a few were all responsible for engineering a cohesive sound pallet for Jayz. How different does this record sound without their influences and how involved do you think JayZ was with building that team?

CM: Without Just Blaze, Kanye and Bink, you don’t get this seminal piece of work.

SS: A lot of credit has to go to Biggs and Dame Dash when you think about the team Rocafella built. Jay-Z would have had a hand, as would have others. Just Blaze and Kymabo Joshua were instrumental in bringing Young Guru into the fold. Taking a football analogy, you may have Pep or Jurgen Klopp as the star name you see, but there are coaches behind them that help build that team.

Have you set your sights on a new series? If so, why have you chosen it?

SS: We’re working on a couple right now, but once it’s ready, we’ll be sure to let you know. Right now, we are grateful and humbled by the support of yourselves, The Guardian, Music Week, ESPN and Forbes. We never take support for granted, so thank you.

Have You Heard? is a series in which the team from Pod Bible meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard of yet. While the Oh. My. Pod. section in the magazine gives a quick shout out to shows of that ilk, Have You Heard aims to go deeper in an effort to spread awareness for shows that deserve more exposure! This time we speak to Curator of Hip-Hop History, Nathan T. Rideau, who is the host of “hip-hop’s #1 scripted podcast”, Playerz From The South.

NAthan from PLayerz from the south

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

My name is Nathan T. Rideaux, and I am a Content Creator/Curator of Hip-Hop history. I am a self described “Down South B-Boy.” My personal history of being involved in the culture from all angles has provided me a lifetime of subject matter. As a native of the Third Coast, I wanted to get these incredible stories out. I lived it, so I can create around it. My podcast “Playerz From The South” is a historical journey of what southern Hip-Hop culture was 25 years ago. Although it speaks to the history, it’s a fictional story of the main character Keyvon Thierry, who was a pioneering southern rap mogul who became a multimillionaire thru shrewd but smart business moves. It is the first of its kind, mixing Hip-Hop history with dope storytelling, corrupt politicians, and urban redevelopment.

What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?

I first started listening to podcasts in 2015. The Combat Jack Show was my first and favorite. He was widely known as The Godfather of Hip-Hop Podcasting. I’ve tried listening to others, but for what I like to hear and his style of hosting, that was it for me.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

Ironically, I was listening to an episode of Combat Jack in 2017 and he made a profound statement that the podcast space was just as wide open and new now as Hip-Hop was back in the late 80’s. When I heard him say that, I knew it would be a place for me to utilize what I do best, which is writing and discussing the artistic nature of the culture.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

Before I started writing Playerz, I listened to a couple of fiction podcasts to get a general idea of what’s involved, most notably was “S-Town” other than that I just spend alot of my time creating and not really consistently listening to others.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

Since I marvel at the work of bricklayers and people who really built the culture, I would want to interview J Prince, the founder of Houston based Rap A Lot Records. Someone I have total high regard for, just for what he did to have the South in position to make significant contributions in music history.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to keep pressing forward until you find your lane. I first launched The Genius Generation Podcast as a discussion based show, then wanted to do some audio drama. Playerz From The South was originally a script I was writing for a film. My next show about to launch is a culinary/ Hip-Hop show named “FoodDope” so I just keep my ideas fresh and try to approach untouched territory.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

I purposely named each episode after the name of classic Southern rap songs. My whole goal was to show a side of Hip-Hop that is rarely seen. The Gulf Coast has tons of influence and history and I wanted to spotlight that. I think Episode 3: LIVE At The O.M.N.I. would be the perfect introduction because it is where we reached a comfort zone in the whole production process.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

They can find out more about me at playerzfromthesouth.com and also be on the lookout for my new show FoodDope, where I will be engaging with Hip-Hop influenced Executive Chefs and Restaurateurs as we discuss the interesting parallels in Culinary Arts and classic Hip-Hop. Also, my IG: @THEPROFESSOR73 and @PLAYERZFROMTHESOUTH.
