The Podcast Show 2023 is taking place this week at the Business Centre in London. I attended The Podcast Show last year and was so blown away by the amount of content on offer that I regretted not having forensically scoured the schedule to create an advance action plan days beforehand. Once again, I am likely to spend much of my time dipping in between the ‘Theatre’ programme, spanning three large spaces and featuring conversations with bigger names, major production companies and commissioners, and the four more intimate ‘Talking Podcasts’ rooms which feature more grassroots advice, on topics such as PR-ing your podcast and entering awards, alongside inspiring case studies from the world of indie podcasting. Yet there are several other strands – from practical advice on the Rise-Up stage to an Ask The Experts programme.

So this year, here are a few tips that you may want to add to your own agenda:

1. Why Audiences Respond to Comedy Podcasts – with Dan Schreiber, Luisa Zissman, Paul Chowdry and Chris Lander
Wednesday 11.30am – The Studio Stage

In this panel discussion, Global’s Head of Comedy Podcasts Chris Lander unpacks new research into audience attitudes to comedy podcasts with a stellar panel of comic talent. Pod Bible coverstar Dan Schreiber of No Such Thing As A Fish who will no doubt be giving a nod to his new show We Can Be Weirdos.

2. Evolutions in True Crime and Investigative Journalism
Wednesday 1pm – Gallery Stage

This sounds like a fascinating discussion for fans of Serial and all the excellent true crime pods that have followed. What are the new directions, innovations and ethical considerations in this space? What does the future of the genre look like? Panellists are set to include Matthew Shaer of Campside Media, Alexi Mostrous of Tortoise Media and David Waters of Novel.

3.  Duos In Podcasting: How to Not Get Professionally Divorced
Wednesday 3.15pm – The Origin Theatre

As someone who has spent years writing and speaking about breakups, both the personal and professional kind, this title really caught my eye. How do you keep a podcast partnership going even when you’re driving each other mad? Roman Kemp interviews podcasting duos Sam Thompson and Pete Wicks (Staying Relevant) plus Adeola Patronne and Mariam Miss (Pressed) to find out.

4. Pod Bible Live – Creating a Community and Network Around Indie Podcasts
Thursday 11.30am – Talking Podcasts ‘Creator 1’

Come and see Pod Bible Digital Editor Fran Turauskis quizzing Kobi Omenaka (cofounder of Stripped Media and host of Flixwatcher, Simple Politics and The Wire Stripped), Tom Dark (Head of Darkside Media, ex Head of Podcast Promotions at Warner Records and host of Monkey Tennis – The Alan Partridge Podcast) and yours truly all about building networks and communities around our podcasts.

5.  A Podcaster’s Manifesto: How Pod Save the U.K. Can Change the World
Thursday 2.15pm – The Origin Theatre

Crooked Media, who launched Pod Save America in the wake of a certain President Trump’s inauguration, have teamed up with Reduced Listening and Nish Kumar to tackle our political landscape head on. Nish will share his view on political podcasting and how the medium can create change.

In between sessions, don’t forget to visit the Pod Bible stand (Stand J13) to say hello to the team and pick up copies of the latest issue and back catalogue.

The Podcast Show Full Line-up

There’s hundreds of stalls to visit including Pod Bible Lead Partner Audible, and Media Partners Stak and Auddy. And if last year is anything to go by, the Spotify stand should be worth a visit to see what treats and goodies they have up their sleeve. (Last year they offered personalised tote bags – printed on demand with your pod art – and signature juices to provide welcome rehydration for frazzled podcasters…)

Enjoy the show!

The Podcast Show is the biggest international festival for the business of podcasting and will bring together thousands from
the global podcast community under one roof. Day passes are still on sale and extra 10% off selected passes when you use the code “PODBIBLE” until 22nd May.

Global Pillage is a panel show podcast that pillages the globe for the best idiom, culture, customs and norms – and then turns it into comedy. In the wrong hands, such a concept could become very offensive, very quickly. Global Pillage avoids this simply: the guests have also been sourced from around the globe, and are introduced with a tongue-in-cheek “what makes you diverse?”.

In the case of the live show I saw at the London Podcast Festival, the panel consisted of Sarah Bennetto and Njambi McGrath (Empire Strikes Back) vs Abigoliah Schamaun and Sharlin Jahan (The Right Side). The third team playing was the Hive Mind of the Audience.

I wasn’t expecting a show that has a theme tune with the words “we’re short, we’re round, we’re brown or we’re queer…” to keep very much off the table when it comes to comedy fodder, and host Deborah Francis-White came hot out of the gate to acknowledge the “change of staff at Buckingham Palace.” Luckily, the audience were receptive to the quip, because there were several of the same theme that followed, culminating in the recognition of the show taking place in King’s Place.

Seeing the recording of this panel show was a peak behind the curtain and, as someone who has attempted to control a panel conversation, it was reassuringly chaotic. It’s also great to see the amount of teamwork that goes into the episode you can hear – Deborah is the host, but questions are set by Ned Sedgwick. The panel brought their stories and jokes (some more loudly than others) and the little musical ditty was played live by Mark Hodge. Even the Producer (a job that often needs coaxing out into public) Tom Salinsky was present to rile up the audience at the start and wind down the comedians towards the end of time.

There were points that highlight we are all somewhat out of practice with live shows: several segues had to be read more than once, a few jokes didn’t quite land a laugh (although listening back to the episode, they seem funnier because of that). And as an audience we needed a lot of encouragement to get involved. The Global Pillage team were perhaps sorry they encouraged us because the first answer that was given appears to have been too rude for the podcast version!

But it was fun to feel the energy in the room, and be involved in the show.

Oh, and I completely forgot that I gave an answer for the Hive Mind at around 16mins. I do like a good pun…

We’ve always enjoyed following the progress of Kelechi Okafor. Way back in Issue #008 we knew that her podcast Say Your Mind was only going to get bigger, and the last year has certainly proven us right. Not only did she claim the converted cover star spot for our seventeenth issue, but she stormed out of the pandemic with sellout live shows in April.

Now she’s back with a bonus live show at Sadlers Wells in September. We pinned her down to talk a bit about her thoughts on live podcasting…

Kelechi, congratulations on the sell-out shows in April! You’re back with more in September. How does it feel to be in the same room as your listeners?

It feels incredible to be in the same room as my listeners. The moment just before I step on stage I feel nervous and excited because naturally, I don’t want to let them down and I have to remind myself that it is unlikely they would be let down because, they choose to tune in weekly to a podcast where I randomly burst into song and say the most random things.

What can you do with live shows that you can’t do on a podcast?

Truly it is the feedback that you get from a live show that is unrivalled. Sometimes I stream live on my social media platforms but I am usually just reading people’s reactions from the words they type as opposed to actually seeing them and hearing in real life their screams and claps. I love that. As a trained actor, I feel like I am literally fuelled by the audience’s energy. We have more video podcasts now so people can see facial reactions from the podcast host in a similar way to a live show but that real-time back and forth that you can have with a live audience is what I find extra inspiring.

Is there anything you had to get used to NOT doing in the live shows?

I can’t really think of anything I personally wouldn’t do at a live show. I pretty much wing most episodes once I have the general outline of what I want to discuss and that carries over into the live shows too. If anything maybe not having so many listeners on stage as that can be hard to manage even though I want everyone to come onto the stage and say their mind.

What is one of your favourite memories from the Live shows so far?

One of my favourite memories has to be The Receipts Podcast ladies surprising me by attending my 2019 live show and they brought me flowers. That really touched me for them to acknowledge me in that way. I think in podcasting it is important to have a community of fellow podcasters that celebrate you and vice versa.

Finally – are you any closer to getting (dream guest) Viola Davies on??

Arrgghh!! If I speak they will say I am speaking (Nigerian turn of phrase used by people who feel they’ve lamented too much already!) I thought it would be the publication of her memoir that would land me the interview but that didn’t happen. I’m hoping it is something else. Maybe an upcoming film. I don’t know who else I can beg to let me interview this amazing woman. I know once I finally speak with Viola I will be able to successfully pitch why I should play the lead in Wild Seed.

Watch Say Your Mind live on Sunday 25th September at Sadlers Wells Theatre, and buy your tickets here.

It’s nearly festival time! Which shows are you most excited about seeing this year?

I can’t believe it’s finally here! We’ve got such an amazing line-up of big names, old friends of the festival and excited new shows. Beef & Dairy Network is always a highlight, and this year we’re streaming it too, so you can watch anywhere in the world. I am super pumped for the brilliant line-up of show from our new partner BBC Sounds, Bad People, The Battersea Poltergeist, Brown Girls Do it Too and Wheel of Misfortune. I’m also thrilled that we’re hosting Nana and Rose for their live debut of Two Twos Podcast. Jenny Ryan (The Vixen from the Chase) and Lucy Porter have something special planned for their live ep of Fingers on Buzzers – I can’t wait to get quizzing!

There are some amazing guests too; Mark Gatiss on from Queer to Eternity, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Ingrid Oliver are being interrogated on Inside the Comedian and Himesh Patel joins Nikesh Shukla for Brown Baby Podcast.

As well as the fantastic line-up of podcasts performing live this year, there are also a number of other events and workshops running alongside them. Could you tell us a little about what else you have going on?

There is so much going on! We have a dedicated day of Audio Drama (5th Sept), featuring live shows like The Silt Verses and Wooden Overcoats and a whole day of free panels that will teach you how to make everything from Comedy to Horror.

The Podcast Maker Weekend (11th and 12th Sept) returns, this year supported by Spotify, with a range of free and affordable workshops covering directing, sound and music, marketing and monetisation and lots lots more.

Our festival partner Acast is running what’s sure to be a fascinating free panel ‘My First Year in Podcasting’ (4th Sept), hosted by Deborah Frances-White with guests Juno Dawson, Marcus Bronzy, and Nikesh Shukla.

For those unable to attend in person, are there ways for people to tune in from home?

Lots of shows are streaming live from Kings Place via our online platform KPlayer, including festival debuts from Three Bean Salad and Two Mr Ps in a Podcast. We’re also delivering on our reputation for international shows, by presenting a selection of live streams from the US and Canada, including festival favourite Judge John Hodgman with guest John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats and We Got this! with guest Paget Brewster. You can buy tickets to enjoy the live streams from home or join us for free watch parties at Kings Place in our Podcast Lounge. As always we’re pushing the boundaries of live podcasting!

How have you found putting together the festival this year, after such a tough 18 months or so for the live event industry?

The UK Podcasting Community is wonderful and I like to think the London Podcast Festival is a big part of that. We’ve had amazing support from podcasters, our partners and collaborators, and of course our dedicated Kings Place team. It’s been challenging, but everyone has been so enthusiastic and committed to making the festival work. It’s a real labour of love!

We can’t wait to see the likes of The Guilty Feminist, The Allusionist and The Empire Film Podcast take to the stage this year, but we’re also excited about the diverse range of lesser known shows you have in the lineup. Are there any hidden gems you think our readers might enjoy seeing?

Imriel Morgan has curated a day of podcasts under the Content is Queen banner that are so worth checking out. I am especially looking forward to Tea Towels and Tantrums, with Sadia Azmat and Ola Labib joining Hajar J. Woodland to talk about growing up in (and out of) hijab.

I promise there’s something for everyone! Comedy, documentary, culture, society, audio drama, history, true crime, sex and relationships, chat shows… you’ll be spoilt for choice!

You can read more about the event in our preview article or check out the Kings Place website for more information and tickets!

PODCAST DAY Online is just around the corner so we spoke to the team at Radiodays Europe to find out more about the event and ask about their love for podcasts!

First off, can you tell us about your event?
Our event is called PODCAST DAY Online, it is our first virtual event but our 4th podcast event, the preceding 3 were two in Denmark and a sell out event in London last year. The event brings together podcasters and those in the business of podcast from all over the world to talk about podcasting.

Why did you decide to start a podcast event in the first place?
We are part of the team who run the hugely successful Radiodays Europe event which is now in it’s 11th year, though it will actually be the 12th year when we get to our postponed event in Lisbon, Portugal on 2-4 May 2021. However, a few years ago it was felt although Radiodays Europe does have podcasting as part of the programme we needed a more focused event to cater for this growing market. We based the first event in Scandinavia as this is where the first Radiodays Europe events were held and there was a feeling of going home. This year was once again going to be in London as it is such a hub of podcasting. Now however due to Covid we have gone on line so we are no longer constrained to one location we are Everywhere!

What are the first podcasts the team ever listened to?
The PODCAST DAY Online team listen to a lot of podcasts, the main genre being football as we have two fanatical football fans on staff. It’s difficult to say what the first podcast was that we listened too but the first speaker at that event was Eric Diehn, CEO of Midroll, Stitcher and Earwolf, USA and the first podcaster who stepped on the stage for Podcast Day 2017 was Helen Zaltzman of Answer me this! and The Allusionist the ‘Queen of Podcast’ from the UK! We started as we meant to go on and have with the best speakers!

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?
Right now we are taking inspiration from the many podcasters and podcasts that have popped up during the Covid crisis. We are passionate about the role podcasters and podcasts have played during this time to provide information, to entertain and much more. Covid has been the crisis of audio with people turning back to the comfort of the spoken word and maybe tuning into podcasts for the first time. All those people out there who have made podcasts about, for and during this crisis are our inspiration – cheesy but we don’t care! And, if you want to check some of them out you can do this on the Coronavirus Radio Ideas Page on Facebook. We ran a competition for Podcasters to submit the best of their content – winners announced soon!

Who’s are you most looking forward to hearing from at this years event?
That would be telling, the list is so ridiculously long and to be honest we are pretty proud of who we have speaking this year – see the list here. We currently have: Ear Hustle, Hunting Warhead, BBC Coronavirus, The Comb, Washington d’ici, Radio Sodoma, Germany 3000 (winners of the German podcast awards), winners of the British Podcast Awards and many more on stage! #Excited.com – that’s us not a new podcast.

Washington d’ici

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far from running a podcast event?
Take nothing for granted, be fast to react, don’t sweat the small stuff, keep going no matter what and keep listening to podcasts – or were those just our lessons for life in general, who knows but they work 🙂

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

During these Covid times, prepare to be swept away by a host of award-winning, hugely popular podcasts from some of the UK and Ireland’s most talented names in comedy and TV, all live from the comfort of your own home. The line-up consists of some of the highest charting podcasts in the UK including Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster, The Adam Buxton Podcast, Nobody Panic, Cuddle Club with Lou Sanders, Films To Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein, The Blindboy Podcast, The Froth with Rhod Gilbert, Sian Harries & Friends, Black Gals Livin’ and The Bugle.

Ben Williams, founder of Plosive Productions and Unmute, said: “Podcasts have been a source of comfort and company for many of us during this strange ol’ year, with more people listening than ever. And with live performances only just starting up again, we wanted to give podcast fans a fun way to feel part of a live podcast experience again – so we’ve launched an Online Podcast Festival. We couldn’t be more chuffed with the line-up.”

Ed Gamble from Off Menu said: “We’re looking forward to bringing Off Menu live and uncut to the internet, mainly because it means that The Great Benito can’t edit out James’s Diet Coke story.”

Stevie Martin from Nobody Panic added: “We are so psyched about doing Nobody Panic live online. Not only does it give us an opportunity to get changed out of our pyjamas, but we will both be enjoying fine brandies throughout. Very excited to announce our super special guest too (it’s not the fine brandies) (or 90s pop sensation Brandy).”
