This week we sat down with Matt Lucas to chat about his new podcast, Bitch Bitch Bitch, which is out today on BBC Sounds. Matt’s show features guests who are all in the same line of work to air their job-related grievances.

What is it about podcasts that appeals to you?
The intimacy, the free flow, the candidness.

If you could go back to just before you recorded the first episode of your podcast and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?
Well at this moment we’ve only recorded two episodes, so it’s probably a bit soon for me to know. I’m still trying to find the balance between being under and over prepared! I’m very lucky that the producer has been booking really interesting people. It’s all about the guests.

What makes a great podcast guest?
Someone who understands that small talk will be the death of us all.

What makes a great podcast host?
Lack of hair and abundance of tummy.

What’s been your worst podcast moment?
It’s been a pleasure so far. No complaints. Like I say, it’s down to the guests. They’ve been really open and honest and fun.

What is your podcast/podcaster pet peeve?
That the time goes so quickly. I wish we could chat for four hours!

Is there anything you found annoying as a podcast listener… but then understood when you started making your own?
People talking over each other. But sometimes you just can’t help it, especially when someone is being funny and everyone’s pitching in. I don’t mind it anymore. It feels natural.

Which one podcast episode of your own means the most to you? / Which one podcast episode (not of your own) has had the biggest impact on you?
It’s hard to answer these two questions as we’re still in the early stages of recording. But already I have gasped at the bravery and resilience of the air hostesses. One spoke about dealing with a man who was attempting to hijack the plane. You’ll have to listen to the episode to find out what happened!

Finally, what are your plans for the podcast moving forward?
We haven’t taped it yet but I’m curious to speak with the paparazzi. Because celebs objectify them and they objectify celebs. And I’ve never really properly spoken with them. And I want to know if we have anything in common. And so, to answer your question, I would love to meet more people who I have (negative) preconceptions about, and see what drives them. We’ve become so tribal and so focused on what divides us, and I’d like to see the other side.
