In every issue of the Pod Bible magazine, we ask a podcast disciple five questions about their love for podcasts and podcasting. For Issue #016, we spoke to podcast royalty and co-founder of the new Crossed Wires podcast festival, Alice Levine…

PB: WHY DO YOU LOVE PODCASTS?

AL: I love podcasts for so many reasons. I love the feeling of really clicking with a show, learning the in-jokes and the idiosyncrasies of the hosts, the verbal foibles and when the rhythm of the format becomes familiar and hypnotic and you feel one of the gang. I love learning things through audio too, I’m such a slow reader and I just feel like podcasts are a format my brain can digest.

I listen to podcasts for a big part of the day, every day – so they soundtrack everything. So in a weird way they also offer companionship – a constant presence of someone smarter, funnier, cooler in my ears, improving me a little, osmotically!

WHAT WAS THE FIRST PODCAST YOU EVER LISTENED TO?

The Ricky Gervais Show with Karl Pilkington and Stephen Merchant. I must have listened dozens and dozens of times now. I can quote large chunks of it still. Subconsciously (and maybe a bit consciously!) I think I was channelling a bit of that dynamic when we started My Dad Wrote A Porno.

WHICH PODCASTER MAKES YOU LAUGH THE MOST?

I’ve been a huge fan of Julia Davis for a long time now and it was through her that I discovered Vicki Pepperdine. Dear Joan & Jericha is so perfect, I love hearing podcasters genuinely making each other corpse.

WHICH PODCAST HAS EDUCATED YOU THE MOST?

Recently I really loved Nice White Parents – great journalism and just so gripping even though on the surface the public education system in a specific neighbourhood in the US doesn’t necessarily sound like it would be. It was informative and educational without being preachy or inaccessible. You can really hear that it was a labour of love. Newscast is always clarifying and helpful so I never miss that, that’s one of only a few long standing regulars in my library.

CAN YOU RECOMMEND A SHOW OUR READERS MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF?

I’m always surprised when people say they haven’t heard The Mystery Show. Starlee Kine investigates mysteries ”you can’t solve with the internet” like ‘How tall is Jake Gyllenhaal?’ – why do we care? Because this is a prime example of the ordinary made extraordinary in story telling. It is a logistical feat, with the yarns sometimes unravelling over weeks or even months, and yet the production strikes a perfect balance between slick and DIY. The fact that it only ran for one season is a tragedy.

In our new Industry Spotlight column, Ross Adams from Acast gives us an insight to podcasting. This month he’s looking at podcast connections to Artificial Intelligence and asks – yayI or nayI?

The Pod Bible team has given me a monthly column to discuss everything behind the scenes in the podcast industry. Calling it an “industry” still feels weird to me, as compared to TV, Radio and Film, Podcasting is practically a baby. But it’s thanks to people like the hardworking team behind Pod Bible; Podcasting is a dynamic, fast-paced and everchanging medium that basically has us all obsessed.

My name is Ross Adams, and I’m the CEO of Acast – the world’s largest independent podcast platform and home to the most valuable podcast marketplace. We help podcast creators earn value for their podcasts through ads, sponsorship and branded content.

This month I want to address something that’s been on the lips of the whole industry for a while now; AI. Yes, that two-letter acronym that can either strike fear or excite you.

Well, I’m here to tell you, for the time being anyway, that AI technology is nothing to be afraid of, and the work being done with AI in podcasting is genuinely groundbreaking. Yes, you might read headlines around ‘podcasts completely written and recorded by AI’, but at Acast, we still believe stories created by humans, for humans, make the creator economy so powerful and podcasts and podcast advertising so effective.

AI is nothing new to Acast; we have been using tools and developing products that incorporate AI for a while. So how is the wider podcast industry using AI? When it comes to creating a podcast, AI is particularly powerful when it can remove time spent on administrative efforts for creators and afford them more time to focus on what they do best: create incredible podcasts for you to listen to. There are also some brilliant examples of AI helping creators expand their audience, for example, across language barriers with AI translations. Some companies are even using AI to make podcaster’s jobs much easier. For instance, Headliner creates video clips from episodes. Uses AI to generate captions, select relevant images, and add visual effects to create videos for social media platforms.

If you’re not using Podchaser yet to discover your next great podcast (whilst reading Pod Bible, of course), then you’re missing out on another way that AI can help you, the podcast listeners. Podchaser uses natural language processing (a form of AI) to analyse episodes, show descriptions, and listener reviews to generate detailed metadata that enables audiences to discover podcasts based on specific topics, genres, or even specific guests. Basically, Podchaser will find the next big podcast for you to dive into.

Behind the scenes in the podcast advertising world, we use AI to assist in creating meaningful insights from things like listener data to improve the podcast advertising experience. Acast’s product development team uses AI to become more efficient and deliver more value to its customers, which are the brands and advertisers supporting all the podcast creators. I’m proud to say we were early adopters of the potential of AI in our product capabilities. For example, combining transcription with machine learning allows us to provide contextual-based advertising through keywords and content categorisation. We call this conversational targeting.

If that all sounds complicated, fear not, it’s what most content platforms – social media or video streaming – use to tailor their algorithms to specific users. We believe there is a place for AI within podcasting when used to enhance that human storytelling experience rather than replace it.

I promise you this column has not been written by the AI Bot 4000, but I would say that wouldn’t I?

Podcasts are overwhelmingly done in audio through subscriptions in places like Apple PodcastsSpotifyGoogle Podcasts, and Overcast. But, humans are inherently visual creatures and video adds the visual complexity and emotional depth that audio may not. That’s one of the reasons video has quickly becoming the foundation of the modern web.

Like aspiring actors flocking to Hollywood for more exposure or influencers utilising TikTok to reconstruct scenes from their favourite movies/TV shows, creators are translating their work into video in the hopes of growing their audience.

People gravitate to the faces of other humans because we’re hardwired that way. We use other people’s facial expressions to develop emotional context so our brains react differently to faces. We prioritize them over other visual stimuli.

Should I add video/visuals to my podcast?

Yes you should 100% add video/visuals to your podcast. It’s a fairly simple process and here’s why. If you put your face on camera, people are going to pay attention. It’s in our chemical makeup. And when people pay attention, your engagement goes up.

Inside the BBE studio

Setting up a video/visuals for your podcast can be costly because you have to take into consideration purchasing quality recording, lighting and a suitable space to record your content. I setup a recording studio that offers you the opportunity for you to record your show at very affordable price. BBE Studio is located in the heart of creative London Hackney,  which is a 15 minute journey to/from Shoreditch/Hoxton/the City and this modern, minimalistic space offers you the opportunity to record your podcast using professional sound and video recording equipment.

BBE Studio comes fully equipped with the latest audio recording equipment including: 4 Pod Mics, RODEcaster Pro, camera (with a tripod and mic) and professional lighting that is customisable to suit your mood.

In the BBE studio 2

Adding visuals to your podcast gives your audience another reason to choose your content instead of the flood of other stimuli they see every day. A video podcast provides a different sort of appeal that audio podcasts alone cannot and can you can easily produce this content in the comfort of our studio.

FAMILIARITY

The Familiarity Principle – the more you’re exposed to something, the more familiar you become to it. It’s the same reason why the same people deliver the news every night.

It’s also why brands bombard us with advertisements we barely pay attention to. Use the same logic with the visuals of your podcast. By consistently repurposing your show to video, your audience will become familiar with your face, which means they will come to prefer you as host to others they can’t see.

Social is made for video

Social media is optimised for video, not for audio. Not yet anyway. By default, the audio is muted on every video post. Not ideal if you’re trying to promote your new audio-only show.

Luckily for podcasters the emergence of audiograms has made this problem a bit easier to solve. Instagram is also becoming a video app and not the photo sharing app it once was 10 years ago. The changes Instagram will unveil in the following months will make video more immersive offering a full-screen experience on the app, so now is the time to add great visuals to your podcast for improved engagement and overall growth.

YOUTUBE FANS

There’s no doubt podcasts are growing in popularity. In 2020, Apple reported that over 50,000 new podcasts were created as a result of the pandemic. But, YouTube is absolutely gigantic and has been around for much longer than podcasting. Google estimates that over 1.9 billion people log into YouTube every month. That’s roughly 30% of everyone who uses the Internet.

YouTube could be rocket fuel for growing your audience. Of course, you could upload the audio of your podcast over a static image, but then you’d pass up on the advantages outlined above.

Ready to start adding visuals/videos to your podcast?

Tips to remember when adding visuals/video to your podcast

  • Use a quality camera/recording gadgets
  • Make sure the area you’re recording from is clean
  • Ensure you have good lighting
  • Use the most interesting sections of the recording to the promote your episodes if you don’t have the time to edit the footage or finances to outsource a freelancer

With adding visuals/videos to your podcast, the main factors you need to consider are: the cost of purchasing professional equipment and you also need to evaluate the space you’re recording in. It doesn’t need to be the Taj Mahal, but it should look somewhat decent. Like the BBE Studio in Hackney.

So unleash your creativity, share your story and inspire others at the BBE Studio.

The BBE Studio is a multi-purpose studio in London for podcasters and other creatives. Booking your podcast session is as easy as 1,2,3 and from only £20 per session: you can’t get it any better. Find out more on the website bbeldn.co.uk/podcast-studio-in-london.

Featuring three passionate, loveably funny and well-informed tennis geeks, occasional superstar guests, compelling context about tennis history and a healthy dollop of affectionate engagement with listeners and their pets, The Tennis Podcast is the perfect podcast to keep up with the action this coming fortnight on the hallowed courts of Wimbledon.

To celebrate the start of The Championships, after a two-year hiatus, podcaster and tennis fan Rosie Wilby dusts off her whites, dishes up some strawberries and serves up a few questions to one of their three hosts, David Law.

What inspired you to start the podcast?

Catherine Whitaker and I started working together in tennis in 2007 when podcasts were in their infancy. We would often talk about those we enjoyed listening to. At the time that meant The Ricky Gervais Podcast and later the Alan Davies Arsenal Podcast, now known as The Tuesday Club. They made us laugh and we fell in love with the medium. Then one day in May 2012, I messaged Catherine and said, ‘how about we start our own tennis podcast?’ And off we went.

I was convinced we needed big-name guests every week. And we did that for the first year but it’s very difficult to keep up. Catherine felt that we could do it without because those were the shows we enjoyed listening to. She was right. We still do interviews but we get bigger audiences for pub conversations about what’s happening in the sport.

How do you make such a visual sport sound so interesting and exciting?

Haha thanks for the kind words. To us it is an interesting and exciting sport. So we’re just saying how we feel about it. Hopefully that comes across. I’ve been commentating for BBC 5 Live on tennis for the last nineteen years and it’s my job to make a visual sport sound interesting and exciting without pictures. So that probably also helps.

How do you plan to cover Wimbledon? Is it all the more exciting after a two year gap?

It really is. After a year in which Wimbledon didn’t happen, we can’t wait for it to return. We will produce a podcast every night during Wimbledon. And after eighteen months of recording remotely via zoom, we will finally be able to be in the same room – Catherine’s flat! We will also provide a daily Twitter commentary (@TennisPodcast) and produce daily newsletters which feature Matt’s Stat (courtesy of our third voice, Matt Roberts), trivia and predictions for the following day.

Can Roger Federer and Serena Williams win what might be their last Wimbledon?

They’re not the favourites any more but they can definitely win it. I think their entire years this year, and in fact the remainders of their careers, have been pretty much planned to target this particular Wimbledon. They are both thirty-nine years old. It’s now or never.

What inspired you to look back at tennis history in your Tennis Re-Lived series during the pandemic?

We were left with a black hole of six months without live tennis when lockdown began. We had promised daily shows during the Grand Slams to the 1467 listeners who crowdfunded us at the start of 2020. So, in the absence of live action, we decided to go back and watch classic matches together and make daily podcasts about them throughout what would have been the French Open and Wimbledon 2020.

The concept evolved into us speaking to players who were involved with those matches, coaches and commentators who were there and also producing documentary podcasts about pioneers like Althea Gibson, the first black Wimbledon champion. At the same time, we offered all of our 1467 backers a refund for the year because we knew it wasn’t what they signed up for. Only one person took up the offer. Tennis Re-Lived brought us closer to the sport than ever and gave us a chance to understand its history.

This week saw the launch of The Friendship Onion, a double act podcast with Lord of the Rings hobbits and real-life friends Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd. Of the many celebrity podcasts coming out, I am pretty excited about this one for a couple of reasons:

Like many industries, COVID-19 has forced people working in audio out of their offices and into remote recording. Saying goodbye to studio sessions has been hard, but it has led to innovations in remote and mobile recording. AudioMango is a novel – and stylish – concept to provide elevated recording experiences, driven to your door. We asked the team behind the wheel to tell us more about it.

Tell us about AudioMango – what’s your elevator pitch?

A new mobile, high-calibre recording studio that is available to hire, offering industry standard equipment and on-location post-production. Our stylish and COVID-safe adapted Mercedes-Benz, gives you the flexibility of being able to ‘park up’ anywhere; even right outside your (or your guest’s) door. It also has several cameras installed so you can get footage of your sessions for your show’s promotion. AudioMango is available for hire now, from a starting rate of £700 +VAT. All AudioMango recording sessions come with and on-board sound engineer, choice of microphones & enhanced post-production audio as standard. We will even produce your own theme song and help you market your podcast (at additional costs).

outside the AudioMango studio

Who are the team behind AudioMango?

It was created by Gavin Fenton, whose love of all things audio has developed from his 20 years’ experience within the music industry. Starting out as a DJ, with a residency at the Ministry Of Sound, and his involvement with the SonyBMG street-team, Gavin went on to produce radio shows for BBC Radio 1Xtra, Kiss 100 & Capital Xtra and has been involved in countless live production events. Gavin is joined by Harvey Jones, himself an established music producer with a vast technical knowledge, who teaches music production and a sound
engineer for live events.

It’s a really novel concept with lots of well-considered extras – is there a particular feature of the recording studio you are most proud of?

The fully mobile aspect has to be our favourite. We can record for about 7/8 hours with our own silent power source. So, you could record an entire podcast series at the top of a mountain, or be driven around in comfort to all your guests’ locations as nothing beats a real face-to-face conversation. But from a tech geek point of view, the mini production area we have in the rear of the van is awesome. It is fitted with an 8-channel pre-amp mixer, meaning we record all the mics separately, giving us total control when post producing.

Have you had anyone use the studio as yet?

We couldn’t possibly disclose any names. Discretion is something our clients value hence incorporating tinted windows into the design, allowing privacy for the talent to go about their audio recording business undisturbed.

Who would be your dream podcaster client? Tell us which host you want to pick up in the van!

If we could work with Romesh Ranganathan whilst recording his awesome “Hip Hop Saved My Life” podcast – this would be amazing. Driving between guests blaring out old school beats, sounds like a great day!

Where can people find out more?

Head to our website  audiomango.com for more details. Or you can get in touch with our final team member, Emma de Pfeiffer-Key, on emma@audiomango.com who is supporting us on marketing and business development.

We recently heard from Laura Kidd,  creator of a podcast that interviews artists about the magic of making things, Attention Engineer…

Penfriend aka Laura Kidd

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I’m Laura Kidd, a music producer, songwriter and solo artist known as Penfriend, beaming songs and podcast episodes into peoples’ ears from my home studio The Launchpad in Bristol, UK. With “Attention Engineer”, my mission is to encourage creativity in every listener by sharing deep, honest conversations with some of the artists I admire the most. We talk about where ideas come from, celebrate the magic of making things and travel through topics like productivity, mental health, balancing online and offline life and everything in between. It’s aimed at listeners who are interested in how things are made, who might want to be more creative in their own lives and would appreciate a friendly nudge in the right direction.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

An “attention engineer” is someone who works for a big tech company, deploying sneaky techniques to keep you stuck to your screens as much as possible. After building up a sizeable audience for my music using the internet, I started feeling concerned that not only was I expected to spend all day on social media telling people about myself, but that I was encouraging my audience to do the same thing. After reading books like “Deep Work” and “Digital Minimalism” by Cal Newport, amongst others, I’ve been working to retain better control over my time and attention, two of the most valuable resources we have.

I’ve always been a performer who wants to meet the people in the audience after the show – the idea of the person on stage being more important than those who paid to come and see them has always felt weird and wrong to me. With my podcast, I want to keep breaking down these barriers by really humanising the artists I speak to – there’s no room for starryness or a load of PR hot air and selling on “Attention Engineer”.

At its basic level, my podcast is an attempt to create something more meaningful, resonant and valuable than a bunch of tweets about my face, and it means so much to me that listeners have found it helpful as well as entertaining.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

It was the Ricky Gervais Show – I was an extra on his show “Extras” around the same time as the podcast began (yes, that’s me standing next to David Bowie in the singalong scene!). The first to make a deep impact on me, though, was WTF by Marc Maron. I was introduced to it on a UK tour in 2012 and have listened loyally ever since.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

WTF is a big inspiration – Marc has always asked such great questions about the craft behind creative careers, and I love discussing that sort of thing because I always want to learn how other people make their work. It was due to hearing many guests on WTF talk about their experiences of meditation that led me to try it, which was life-changing. My new interest in mindfulness led me to another podcast that has had a profound effect, “Hurry Slowly” by Jocelyn K. Glei. It’s about mindful productivity, slowing down and going deeper, and I’ve come across so many great people through that series, like Austin Kleon, whose books on creativity are really wonderful. My other favourite is “Creative Pep Talk” by Andy J. Pizza, which is a must-listen for artists of all stripes. I love how Andy’s goals are so clear – each episode is packed with really practical tips on how to supercharge your creative practice and get your work out there. I highly recommend all three.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

I have to say, I’ve had several dream guests on the podcast already – Tanya Donelly, Corin Tucker, Miles Hunt, Mark Chadwick, Lemn Sissay, Bernard Butler…BUT early on in the planning stages for the series I made a list that had Shirley Manson from Garbage at the top of it. I’ve loved her work since I was a teenager, so it would be a total dream come true to have a conversation with her.

What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned so far as a podcaster?

I thought I knew what I was getting into, because I’d already made a podcast series for someone else before starting my own, but the additional workload was an adjustment. I was already a very busy person before I started “Attention Engineer”, but I’m glad I decided from the start to publish consistently every Wednesday. It’s a real commitment, especially as I make the whole thing myself, but it’s so rewarding to get regular feedback from fans of the show. I love hearing that someone has been inspired to pick up the guitar again after years of not playing, or that something discussed on the show sparked an idea, or encouraged them to give something new a try. That’s what it’s all about.

What episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

That’s a tough one, but I’d go with ‘Episode 18 – Miles Hunt (The Wonder Stuff)’. I’m thrilled to have known Miles for nearly a decade now, after being a fan since I was kid, and he’s been a big supporter of my music over the years. I’m always very happy to delve deep with guests, whether I’ve met them before or not, but listeners have told me this episode felt like they were overhearing a chat between friends down the pub. We talked about the magic of songwriting, how the internet has changed musicians’ careers and how Covid-19 dashed Miles’ dreams of becoming a long distance truck driver.

Where can Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

Visit my website penfriend.rocks and you’ll find my music, writing and all the podcast episodes, of course. I’ll even send you two free songs immediately when you sign up to my friendly online community. I’m @penfriendrocks on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Episode 001 Pod bible

#001 • No Such Thing As A Fish / White Wine Question Time / Birthday Girls House Party

One, two, skip a few… That’s how everyone goes through back-catalogues, right? If you are brand new to Pod Bible, I have to point you to the inaugural episode of the podcast. It dives straight in the deep end with No Such Thing As A Fish (pun fully intended). Listen to Adam and Stu chatting to Dan Schreiber about the massively successful show, as well as some great recommendations from Kate Thornton from White Wine Question Time. Plus, there’s far too much fun being had by the team from Birthday Girls House Party! Listen here >>

Episode 050 Pod bible

#050 • Distraction Pieces / Off The Beat & Track / Hardest Part Of The Ring

What’s one of the best things about applying for jobs in the podcast world? You can get to know your potential colleagues before you even send your CV! When Pod Bible Podcast turned 50 episodes young, the Pod Bible originators celebrated with chats from Pip about his Distraction Pieces Podcast, as well as a few recommendations from Stu and Ad. It’s a great chat, and a must listen if you want to feel like a true Pod Bible disciple. Listen here >>

Episode 039 Pod bible podcast back-catalogue

#039 • Have You Heard George’s Podcast / Private Parts / The Big Travel Podcast

Have you heard the Have You Heard George’s Podcast podcast? If the answer is ‘yes’, you should definitely have a listen to this episode. And I don’t just say that because I really wanted to write that sentence to confuse you. Adam’s conversation with George the Poet was one of the first ones recorded during the first COVID lockdown in March 2020. It was really interesting to hear how the lockdown isolation mirrored George’s creative process. Listen here >>

Episode 070 Pod bible podcast back-catalogue

#072 • Rule Not The Exception • The Log Books • Self Care Club

Pod Bible, both magazine and podcast, are here to give you a chance to hear from your favourite podcasters while also introducing you to people and podcasts you may not be aware of yet. This recent episode did that for me perfectly. It prompted me to finally listen to The Log Books, which had been in my queue since its British Podcast Awards success. AND then after listening to The Log Books, and loving it, I immediately subscribed to Tash’s recommendations. Listen here >>

Bonus Episode: A Message From Pod Bible

This episode is very different to the rest of the podcast back-catalogue, but it is also one of the most important. Following the death of George Floyd and subsequent centring of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, the team at Pod Bible contemplated their role and responsibility to help bring change. Pod Bible Founder, Scroobius Pip, and my predecessor, Jordan Rizzieri, had a conversation about the Pod Bible Pledge, and the importance of reaching out to underrepresented communities to spotlight their work. It’s a pledge I fully agree with. Listen here >>

Micro grant for podcasters

Hi Imriel! Pod Bible readers will know you from your Overheard in the Studio series, but can you tell us a little bit more about yourself and Content is Queen?

Sure, I’m Imriel Morgan, a podcast marketing expert, and the Founder of Content is Queen, a podcast agency that supports ambitious podcasters reach their goals through production, studios and promotions. Our goal is to help creators of all backgrounds share their humanity and grow their value in the world using audio.

The micro-grant scheme seems like a great way of opening up access to resources for new podcasters. How did you realise it was needed?

I’ve worked with many podcasters over the years, and I’ve heard tons of pitches, and I’ve been involved and even facilitated programmes to support podcasters get their foot in the door. However, while all of that work has been great and well-received, nothing beats cold, hard, cash in your pocket, a training workshop, a webinar or programme will help you gain skills and knowledge, but cash is what makes the podcast materialise.

I wanted to give out micro-grants because I believe that lots of people have great ideas that they’re burning to make but just can’t afford to do it in the way they’d like. This is ultimately about trusting creatives to do creative work in a way that makes the most sense to them. The pitches so far are a reflection of that. I was lucky that last year, the Audible team had heard about my work (on building affordable studios) and asked if I needed any support and I knew micro-grants would be vital to fulfilling our mission.

Thinking back to when you first started your podcast, what would you have used this grant for if you had that opportunity?

That was so long ago, but I’m fairly consistent with what I spend money on. I’ll invest in professional artwork, studio time, and editing. If I had any money left, it would go on social media advertising. Six years into being a podcaster and I haven’t changed where my money goes.

Content is Queen is also offering up to 6 hours of production support to grantees. Are there any areas where you often see knowledge gaps or where the industry is failing to provide support for entry level?

It’s a great question. The additional support we’re offering is to be that trusted voice and mentor on this journey for podcasters. It’ll be a knowledge or skill support for others, or it might mean getting access to the studio for a day. We’re keen to flex and adapt based on what people need.

Everything you want to know about podcasting is available on Google and Youtube. So I don’t think a lack of information is the problem. I believe many podcasters know what kit they’d like to try or what software they’ll spend time on. It’s the business of podcasting that seems to confuse folx. Part of our broader support effort is building trust and authority for these audiences in an easy-to-understand language that’s relevant and relatable.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with readers?

Yes! Apply if you’re new or an existing podcaster no idea is too small, silly, or weird. You’ve got to be in it to win it as they say. Apply now at contentisqueen.org/micro-grants applications close at 23:59 GMT 21st February 2021.

Pod Bible is regularly contacted by people sharing their new podcasts, and the submissions range across every sector and industry. But one sector we’re always interested in spotlighting are podcasts about social issues that take on a role of outreach. We get to highlight one such podcast in the Good Samaritan section of the magazine, but occasionally something comes into our inbox that is too timely to wait for the next issue.

Our Voices in the NHS podcast shares the untold stories of doctors and nurses working in the NHS during these incredibly tough times. It’s a weekly podcast, with short episodes around 10 minutes long that combine first-hand monologues with beautiful sound design. We asked host Alex Melia to tell us how Our Voices came to be.

Our Voices in the NHS podcast art

Where did the idea for Our Voices come from and why did you decide to do it as a podcast?

I’ve always been fascinated by the untold stories of real people. I think the kind of people who often feature in ‘reality’ TV shows for instance really don’t reflect real life. I felt that podcasting was the best format to enable these stories to be told and heard and for them to hopefully impact people in some way.

One of my sisters, as well as my father, work for the NHS, and I’ve heard some amazing stories from them so I was passionate about concentrating our efforts on medical professionals to begin with. This has turned out to be timely with so much positive sentiment for them right now when people want to get a real glimpse into their lives. Most of the NHS professionals are from overseas, enriching our country so much, and I wanted to bring attention to them.

What was the collaboration process like between yourself and the producers?

It’s been quite a long process, which has so far spanned around 4 months. We began by having strategy sessions where we talked about the values of the podcast and what we wanted to communicate to our audience, in addition to what sort of audience we were looking for.

Fascinate have worked day and night on this. It’s not uncommon for us to be exchanging messages at midnight, and I love the fact that they are as passionate about this as I am. Fascinate also have an excellent track record of producing podcasts which have gone out to tens of thousands of listeners, and the beautiful sound design is just one example that they know how to make this podcast the best that it could possibly be.

Sam and Rich from Fascinate, producers of the Our Voices podcast

The podcast is formatted as short stories. Why did you choose this rather than a Q&A or interview format?

As human beings, our lives are dictated by the stories we tell, both to ourselves and to others. This podcast is all about allowing people to share their stories so a Q&A just wouldn’t have done it justice. Also, this podcast is less about me and more about the guest. I wanted to be the facilitator of great stories rather than playing the ‘host’ in a traditional sense.

Personally most of the podcasts I love (and are the most meaningful) follow a narrative structure, and I think this is reflected in the general listener population. There’s a lot of Q&A style podcasts out there and we wanted to try something different. It’s great to be able to distil the story in the way we do which makes things more engaging, more concise and more accessible for the audience no matter where they are or what they’re doing whilst they’re listening.

It’s obviously much more of a time investment our end but we think it’s worth it!

Did you take inspiration from any other podcasts in particular?

I was particularly inspired by NPR and Gimlet, who both produce incredibly high-quality podcasts. There was a particular podcast on NPR’s ‘This American life’ called “24 Hours at the Golden Apple’, where people were interviewed in a diner and they talked about their everyday lives, which I found fascinating –both mundane and enlightening stories. There’s also a podcast made by Gimlet called “Heavyweight”, where the interviewee talks about a particular event which has happened to them in their lives, and they then provide their reflections afterwards.

We usually ask if you have a dream guest for the podcast, but I think in this instance it is more poignant to ask: do you have a dream listener? Who do you think needs to hear these stories?

I think my dream listener would be Peter Kay. I got the book ‘Dear NHS’ by Adam Kay who collected stories from 100 notable people from the world of entertainment where they spoke about their experiences with the NHS. One story from Peter Kay struck me where his character from the TV programme, ‘Car Share’ went into hospital to have a brain scan. As I read it, it struck me that he embodied the values we try to represent in this podcast: warmth, authenticity, humility, empathy and a small bit of humour thrown in for good measure. He’s from the same area that I’m from too! Even with success, he’s stayed true to himself and lives a very normal life in the area he grew up in.

Alex Melia, host of Our Voices – in the NHS

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far from making the podcast?

Well, as an interviewer I’d say: don’t try to fill the silence, as that’s often where the gold is. When you give someone space in those moments, sometimes they’ll recall something which even surprises themselves.

Is there a particular interview or story that has really stuck with you?

Yes. I spoke to a doctor from Libya who was working in her home country during the civil war and she found herself in the position of having to care for patients who were from the militia which had killed people from her own community. I was struck by the level of compassion and bravery that doing that must have taken, especially as she was threatened with her life as the militiamen all kept guns under their pillows. One of the militiamen warned her that if she failed to care for the men properly, she would be shot and killed immediately. There was no hint of anger or resentment when she told me this story which was staggering; she had this calm sense of acceptance about it all.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

They can either go to our website: ourvoicespodcast.com or they can go to Apple, Spotify or whether they listen to their podcasts. Fascinate Productions can be contacted at www.fascinateproductions.co.uk.

Feedback from attendees:

“Thank you for doing this today, cheered me up, genuinely great tips from all your contributors.”

“Good range of guests, none [of the sessions were] too long and LOVED the round table […] shows you how with a LOT of passion and dedication, one can get there eventually!!”

“There was a good amount of variety and the right amount of time was dedicated to each segment.”

If you missed the event, don’t worry. You can buy a ‘watch again’ ticket here – and view at your own leisure!

Pod Bible watched the event live, and we thought it was a great podcasting event and squeezed a lot into the 2 hours. There were 5 sessions, covering both hosting and production skills. The sessions included panels, Q&As and practical podcast tips. Our favourite session was with voiceover artist & voice coach, Nic Redman. Just make sure you’re not in public when you watch that one!

It was great to see a wide range of speakers, and they came from both independent podcasts and big productions.

If you’re a podcaster or interested in podcast production, you should take advantage of the replay service. You can also watch the video as many times as you want. And be sure to check out more podcast industry news in our news section.
