How to Be Superhuman returns for its third season today, Thursday 6th February. We spoke to host Rob Pope to find out what we can expect from the upcoming season…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

My name is Rob Pope, although a lot of people know me as “that Forrest Gump guy”, after I ran over 25,000 kilometres, over 422 days recreating the run Tom Hanks made famous in the movie…On the way I picked up a lot of great stories and also lessons that I’m now able to pass on to anyone who wants to listen. My podcast How to Be Superhuman in collaboration with Red Bull is a platform for adventure and endurance athletes from a hugely diverse set of backgrounds to bring their incredible stories to a global audience, whether they’re looking for inspiration or just to be entertained and “wowed”. It’s got a unique and immersive storytelling format that brings you straight into the heart of absolutely mind-boggling adventures. Trust me – listen to these stories and you can’t fail to be amazed. You never know, we might just show a few people the key to the door to becoming Superhuman – we’ve all got magic in us somewhere.

Rob Pope

Rob Pope, host of How to Be Superhuman

How did the idea for How to Be Superhuman come about?

Red Bull have always been at the forefront of adventure, and podcasts lend themselves so well to the headspace of people off doing wild things, so it was a natural progression from the incredible video content they’re famed for.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

I feel like I’ve been listening to podcasts for so long, they just kind of filtered into my orbit. Coming from Liverpool, I often found myself listening to Andy Grant’s amazing LEG IT podcast which tells the story of people from a real variety of backgrounds and the Blood Red pod from the Liverpool Echo, so probably one of those.

Ryan Sandes

Ryan Sandes – trail runner

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

There’s so many great ones out there, I usually go down a wormhole of whoever is interviewing me next, or ones that have recently featured a Superhuman guest. I do like the variety of guests you get on Chris Williamson and Rich Roll’s podcasts and have recently got into Happy Hour too. Chris has had me on, so I’ve got those two to tick off!

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

We’ve had a lot of them on already, you lucky lot! As a runner, I’d love to chat to Courtney Dauwalter – she’s a force of nature and seems a heap of fun. Climbing terrifies me and inspires me in equal measure so I’d love to rope up with Janja Garnbret or Alex Honnold and with Red Bull being synonymous with motorsport, Sam Sunderland or Max Verstappen would be brilliant, though they’d have hugely different stories. Maybe most of all though – Felix Baumgartner. Jumping to earth from SPACE? Check. Wait…actually? Yes. That’ll do for me.

Do you have a favourite episode of the podcast, or one you are proudest of?

I guess the first one I ever recorded, as a complete novice, was an adventure in itself. I interviewed Mollie Hughes, the British mountaineer who became the youngest woman to climb both sides of Everest and it was wonderful to follow up this year with Cathy O’Dowd, the first woman ever to achieve the feat. Interviewing Mark Beaumont was a real privilege as his was the first ever adventure book I read – his story about riding around the world in 80 days is so impressive. Phileas Fogg with quads for days…

Cathy O’Dowd

Cathy O’Dowd – the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest from both the south and north sides

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Dougie Lampkin’s story about wheelieing around the TT course of the Isle of Man. I was a bit sceptical initially as though I knew of Dougie and how amazing he was, it seemed more like a novelty than a superhuman feat. The thing is – this episode taught me two things: “Superhuman” comes in many forms and that this podcast series has a ton of surprises in store for the audience. If you want to hold fire till the opening of series 3 – Abdullah Zeinab, the Australian endurance cyclist and adventurer is a perfect start. His story is WILD.

As you look back on your podcasting journey, what challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them to keep the show growing?

When I started, I had no idea on how everything worked, but the incredible crews at Samizdat and Red Bull have been phenomenal, and while I’ve always been a great storyteller in a social situation, I’m pretty confident in saying now that I’m keeping my head above water in the more refined air of broadcasting. We have tried to keep our guests varied, unearthing stories from now, but also deeper back. There is a deep seam of adventure gold that we will continue to mine in the coming years to keep you all on the edge of your seat.

Rob Pope

Can you tell us more about what to expect from the new series of How to Be Superhuman?

Well the guest list is stellar, from my area of expertise, we have two incredible ultrarunners, Tara Dower and Ryan Sandes, one of the greatest climbers in the world, Jesse Dutton, who just happens to be blind, as well as Brette Harrington, whose story is as emotionally charged as it is impressive. We’ve got Martin Strel – the Big River man – possibly the greatest endurance swimmer in the world and is brilliantly bonkers. Andrew Cotton, the mega wave surfer whose comeback from adversity rivals that of another of my favourite guests from series one, the triathlete Tim Don – make sure you check that out, as well as the series two slot with Lael Wilcox – before you check out her latest globe spanning feat on season three. We have death defying (literally) kayaker Nouria Newman. You want high – we go as high as we can probably get as Tom de Dorlodot paraglides around the biggest peaks in the world. He could have waved at Cathy! However, we start the series with the insane feats of Abdullah Zeinab and his descent into madness in the Namibian desert. Just listening will make you thirsty, before we get a lot more “chill” at the South Pole with “Polar” Preet Chandi! Like I said, if you can’t get inspired by that lot, you must have done something beyond compare – maybe we could get you on the show – get in touch!

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

There’s a great article on the Red Bull site that you can check out.

If anyone wants to say hi, or chat more about adventure, they can message me on my website – www.goingthedistancerun.com or follow me on social media at @runroblarun. I reply to all messages myself – I may present the greatest adventure pod on the planet, but I’m still who I’ve always been and love chatting to people with big ideas and bigger smiles.

Last month we introduced the talkSPORT Fan Network – EFL Championship edition. Today, we’re learning more from one of the podcasts in the network. That Millwall Podcast is the ultimate hub for all things Millwall – if you’re a true-blue Lion, you’ve found your new favourite show.

We spoke to host Micky Simpson to find out more about the podcast, and being part of the talkSPORT Fan Network…

Why did you decide to start That Millwall Podcast?

During lock down myself and Omer missed the chats before and after football down the pub or on the way to games etc. So we thought let’s try and make it happen by starting a Live Friday night stream talking about Millwall and getting live comments from other like minded fans. This then grew into what we have today with a large listener base, more live streams and social content and pre-recorded shows and it just keeps growing, with more Millwall fans finding us.

From left to right: Omer, Ben Green, Micky, Stephen Jones, Chris Chapman.

Why did you join the talkSPORT Fan Network?

We were the first to sign up and knew it would be a great place to help us reach a much wider audience with tips and advice they could give us regarding marketing and promoting our show. They are the biggest sports radio company in the world and when they need a Millwall Fan’s opinion, hopefully it’s our phone they call. It’s still early doors, but we are looking forward to the things they have planned, which are really exciting and will help our show grow – but I don’t think we are allowed to mention those just yet!

What has been the best thing about being part of the Fan Network so far?

Meeting other like-minded creators and finding out the ideas that work to help make our listeners and viewers experience even better.

There are some really cracking shows and teams within the Fan Network across the Championship and hopefully a few of us will sample the promised land of becoming a Premier League Podcast one day, ha-ha. Expanding our knowledge and being able to get other club shows on to discuss upcoming games.

You recently hosted your first “That Championship Show” with a panel made up of some of the best Championship podcasters – what do you enjoy most about collaborating with other podcasters?

We got to host the very first one and it’s something we are looking to carry on. It was great to be able to ask a panel of championship, likeminded shows questions regarding all our clubs rather than only being Millwall based questions. Plus it was great to have a wider live audience and the audience members that came on to talk too. Also, we hope it gets us in front of more people and you never know one day in the future it could become a proper show maybe on talksport 2 or even the Talksport app.

Aside from your own podcast, what’s your favourite football podcast to listen to?

Love a listen to The Price of Football and Not The Top 20 plus all the other shows on the talkSPORT fan network too.

Listen to That Millwall Podcast on your favourite podcast app, or to find out more search talkSPORT Fan Network. If you are a podcast creator and want to get involved with the Network then please contact James Rowe at talkSPORT.

Adam Richardson caught up with Seb White and Owen Blackhurst to discuss Reminding You Why You Love Football, a show that steps back from the reactionary and analytical side of football podcasting and delves deeper into the many reasons most football fans fell in love with the game in the first place. Old kits, cult heroes, terrific haircuts, non league weirdness, long range screamers, unsavoury red cards and so much more in between. I’m not a football fan but I love the excitement of major tournaments. There’s something special about being in a pub, pint in hand, glued to a screen amongst a crowd of strangers. The Women’s World Cup was no different and the buzz around it swallowed me whole, including my podcast listening.

And I wasn’t alone – this summer of sport has witnessed a boost in podcast listeners, and more coverage of the women flourishing within it. My love of history led me to the Quite Unsuitable for Females podcast where the women’s game is delved into, as far back as the 1920s.

There are some impressive stats too; women’s cycling is now the 4th most followed sport and a recent announcement that England’s cricketers will get the same match fees as men.

You’ll find a common thread throughout my six recommendations below of chugging away – mostly at a grassroots level – to get women the recognition they deserve. From stories to deep analysis and commentary, these podcasts work to demystify the realm of female sport.

So if there’s a class of sport you’ve been pondering on – whether it is boxing, golf or something more extreme – dig in and be inspired to take that first step by adding these shows to your sports podcast collection.

The Women Who Fight podcast

Hosts Shanti Gorton and Marina Mavrou explore the lives of female fighters around the world. Guests range from a 76-year old judoka to a retired boxer teaching her craft to girls in Iraq. Some ‘fight’ for the pure joy and some to spread the take-up of combat sports in the unlikeliest of places. Each story is unique, with the hosts chipping away at the why behind the ‘fight’’. To cap off each episode, guests are asked, “What are you fighting for?”. With plenty to choose from and leading with curiosity and boldness, this podcast packs more than a punch. Listen now >>

Spindrift

Bike enthusiast, Aoife Glass, brings female cycling to the fore. Interviews include pro-riders to industry experts, and it is the stories and landscapes that take centre-stage. Aoife’s passion and knowledge shine throughout. Topics range from riding perimenopause to those competing at an elite level. With the triumphant return of the Tour de Femmes in 2022, there is a growing appetite for women’s cycling. Catch the episode with Vendangi Kulkarni, on becoming the youngest woman to cycle the world at age 20. There’s a real desire to demystify cycling and encourage women to give it a go! Listen now >>

The Netball Show

This podcast follows the domestic and international netball calendar. Bite-sized commentary, interviews and analysis unpick players’ abilities along with their selection journey. Recent coverage follows the World Cup in Cape Town, with the Roses conceding to Australia in the finals, as well as exciting talk on the next generation of Roses. With over 800 episodes to choose from, you can pick up where you want, or like me, follow the recent Roses’ climb to the finals. Netball has picked up pace over the last few years, with crowds getting bigger and tickets selling out faster. Listen now >>

Women’s Rugby Pod

Broadcaster Johnnie Hammond and England player Rachael Burford (“Burf”) present the first global women’s rugby podcast. News, interviews, and coverage are delivered as they happen across the world. Johnnie’s interview with Jodie Ounsley – the first deaf woman to represent England – is nothing short of inspiring. With the game evolving, there are discussions on bigger crowds and sponsors – hello TikTok! For those wanting regular commentary on the game and those more interested in the storytelling, this podcast doesn’t disappoint. Johnnie’s empathy combined with his knowledge of the game are exceptional. Listen now >>

Why Golf: Opinion Matters

TV presenter Di Stewart interviews a guest each episode, offering thoughtful discussions and opinions. She effortlessly builds rapport with well-known figures, including Helen Skelton and Jamie Dornan – a highlight of the show. While topics like accessibility and the tradition of having a drink on the course may be unfamiliar to some (myself included), it adds an intriguing layer to the pod. What stands out is the removal of common misconceptions – like needing to be rich to play (more about being time-rich) – and interesting facts like golfers living 5 years longer. There’s one clear message here: golf is good for everyone. Listen now >>

Big Kick Energy

Comedians, Maisie Adam and Suzi Ruffell, pick up on the buzz around the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The combination of one being a football fan and the other a newbie to the sport, brings an element of inclusivity. Their Northern and Southern humour blends beautifully – Maise more self-deprecating and Suzi more inclined to quips. Answering listener questions while building momentum as the Lionesses progressed make this a must listen. Excitingly, they have just announced they’ll be back with commentary on the domestic game. You won’t be short on laughs or chants! (‘Mary, Earps, Earps, Earps’). A gem. Listen now >>

Zainab AmerZainab relishes anything to do with storytelling, whether in the form of podcasts, articles, or books (“anything to do with people and stories, I’m in”). Although born and raised in London, Manchester has been home for the last six years. With over a decade’s experience in the NGO sector, her passion for social justice still remains strong. She now devotes more time to her great loves: writing, travelling, and trying every food she can. Find out more about Zainab >>

Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard of yet. Today we’re finding out more about one of the podcasts recommended in the Oh My Pod section of Issue #028 of the magazine. Looking Sideways is a show that uses ‘action sports’ as a way into something bigger and more interesting…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I’m Matt Barr, and I make a podcast called Looking Sideways, in which I interview people from the world of action sports and other related endeavours, as my unofficial tagline has it.

Although as a listener once said in a review they left, “Looking Sideways is ‘just’ about action sports in the same way that Moby Dick is ‘just’ a book about a load of blokes in a boat chasing a whale”. Which is the kind of slightly poncey, highfalutin’ literary metaphor I can get behind (and frequently employ on the show).

Matt Barr

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

Probably Guardian Football Weekly. I’m a football fan, and I still listen to a lot of football podcasts, and that was what initially got me hooked. I still listen to it every week to this day.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

A couple of reasons really. Firstly, I just thought it was a good idea to try and do something slightly cerebral based around action sports. I’ve been working in that industry since the mid-90s, and when the digital shift came in the early 2000s, the media in the industry was decimated pretty quickly, and replaced by a lot of lowest common denominator view-chasing clickbait. Which has it’s place, for sure, but I always thought there was room for something a bit more thoughtful. A podcast like Looking Sideways seemed like the perfect vehicle for it.

I was also pretty bored, after twenty years of working as a journalist, of having to battle to get my ideas published. So I thought I’d cut out the middle man and just do something where I got to unapologetically explore my own ideas. Six years later, I continue to be completely amazed at how into it people are, and how loyal my audience is.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

Scriptnotes was really what gave me the idea for Looking Sideways. I was writing a film script at the time, and I was impressed with the way presenters John August and Craig Mazin were so unapologetically geeky and incredibly open and generous about their craft and knowledge. I also loved the way they involved their similarly geeky audience, to create a real sense of community. That was a big influence when I decided to start Looking Sideways.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

Probably somebody like author Jon Krakaeur, who wrote Into Thin Air and Into The Wild, I’ve wanted him on for years. He’s a passionate snowboarder and backcountry skier, as well as somebody with a quietly looming influence over outdoor culture. Musician Ben Howard is also somebody I’d love to chat to, mainly because I’m lucky enough to count him as a friend, I’ve been asking him for years and he always says no, and I know he has a brilliant story that would surprise people.

I’m always being asked to interview people such as Kelly Slater or Tony Hawk, but there are plenty of big shows out there that do that, so I’m not too interested in that personally.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

I’d say my conversation with astronaut and surfer Christina Koch, soon to be the first woman to go to the moon, is perfectly representative of what I’m trying to do with Looking Sideways. Christina is a passionate surfer who spent her spare time on the ISS taking pictures of her favourite surf shots from orbit. So I contacted her through Nasa and asked if she’d be up for a chat. She did and we had this incredible conversation about how it felt to spend 328 days in space, the moral implications of space travel, and how exactly you take a photo of Pipeline while travelling at 17,000 mph on the International Space Station. So ‘action sports’ are just a way into something bigger and more interesting, which is why I’ve been so fascinated and into surfing, skating and snowboarding my whole life.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

My Substack page www.lookingsideways.substack.com would be a great place to start. Switching everything that back in June 2022 was pretty transformative for the podcast, as it was a way I could combine the audio with writing. I also began to offered paid subscriptions, as I’ve always been pretty militant about not having awful, sub local radio adverts that everybody skips on the show to pay for it. So Substack has been brilliant for me.

Whether it’s on the pitch, in front of a camera or behind a microphone, Ian Wright has always been a bundle of enthusiasm. We caught up with the Wrighty’s House host for Issue #019 to discuss his passion for podcasting and the joy of elevating others.

PB: TELL US ALL ABOUT YOUR SHOW! WHAT’S YOUR PODCAST ELEVATOR PITCH?

IW: Wrighty’s House is a safe place where a group of friends come together and talk about football in a very inclusive and positive way. It’s my yard! It’s the place where the WhatsApp group comes to life.

We have some real family, non-football talk as well. It’s a group of people that have become very close, care about each other a lot and who also have a passion for the game. It’s everything from stories of my playing days to discussing the vibes of our favourite players and managers, harder hitting stuff (when needed to be done) and real life as well.

It’s me and the beautiful family that is Ryan and Musa from Stadio, Carl Anka, Jeanette Kwayke, Flo Lloyd-Hughes and Mayowa Quadri.

WHY PODCASTING? WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE FORMAT THAT APPEALED TO YOU?

I am a radio guy. I grew up listening to the radio when I was younger and many people won’t remember, but it was radio that you could say saved my post-playing career. When I left the BBC, and no TV broadcaster would even consider me, it was Absolute Radio that gave me a platform to fall back in love with football media.

Radio really supported me. Podcasting feels a lot like radio and is accessible too. It allows me to speak directly to the listener in a way I want to. For someone like me, that can be emotional and can be forthright, podcasting – especially on Wrighty’s House – is a really safe space for me to be me. We can own the narrative and build a real community. It’s not scheduled or programmed. It literally feels like an everyday conversation.

The free nature of it all just works for me and how I want to speak about myself and about football. There is no pressure to cover certain topics because they are in the news cycle – something that I still have to do on a lot of platforms.

Wrightys House

YOU HAVE A ROTATING CAST OF GUESTS ON WRIGHTY’S HOUSE EACH WEEK, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THAT FORMAT?

The cast is rotating because I just love hearing different thoughts on football from different people. Also, you don’t always have the same people coming to your house right? One week you may have your sister come over, the next week it might be your cousin who you haven’t seen in a few months. Wrighty’s House is the same but football.

You may hear poetry in motion from Musa, alternative theory from Ryan, Championship and WSL breakdown from Flo, Olympic tales from Jeanette, xG explanations from Carl and Twitter breakdowns from Mayowa. Everyone has their certain niche, yet we all gel together and can move through different gears whenever we want.

Having different people just allows for us to touch on so much. I learn so much from them all and I think the audience love that too. I never wanted it to be just about me, I wanted it to be about us. And, one of my favourite things about the House, and having these people involved, is that there is something for everyone. Old or young. Expert or novice.

TOWARDS THE END OF LAST YEAR YOU DID A LIVE SHOW WITH CHELSEA WOMEN’S MANAGER EMMA HAYES. IS THIS SOMETHING YOU’D LIKE TO DO MORE OF?

For sure! Live shows are a real experience. The House is an experience already but bringing it to life is something even further. The great thing about live shows is that you can give listeners access to people and conversation that they love, but in a very different way. It’s not the same as the normal weekly shows, but the core ingredients of them are still there. Kinda like listening to a live album of artists you like.

My connection with every member of Wrighty’s House is real. I know them, their parents, their families, their partners and I feel that automatic bond with our listeners. We have some incredible listeners that are part of our community that engage with us on that same level of family.

Everyone knows Emma is an elite coach and one of best football minds in the world but in that live show, they saw Emma the way I see Emma away from the cameras. A footballing mind who is incredibly funny. The jokes and insights were amazing, it was as though she was a long-time member of the Wrighty’s House family.

I’ve just always felt that in those sorts of environments, you are able to really get to know people. We are more than our jobs. So when you come to the House, you are you. Emma was Emma. Not only Emma Hayes the Chelsea manager.

I can’t wait to do the same with future live show guests. We did our first Wrighty’s House Live with Barclays in November last year and it felt really good being in a room full of people while we had a chat over some drinks.

YOUR OTHER SHOW IAN WRIGHT’S EVERYDAY PEOPLE TOOK YOU AWAY FROM FOOTBALL TO FOCUS ON PEOPLE FROM OTHER WALKS OF LIFE. WHAT WAS THE APPEAL OF WORKING ON THAT PROJECT?

When I did my Desert Island Discs, I received so many comments about my growing up story. People were calling me a hero, saying how much my story moved them and how inspired they were by it. It made me think about all the amazing people doing incredible things every day in society whose stories we never hear so that’s what I wanted to do, amplify those stories. Like I experienced with my teacher Mr Pigden, an ordinary man that changed my life, the series looks at a range of amazing people doing incredible things, from Andy Hider who fostered 150 children throughout her life to Munira Mahmoud who supplied hot meals to survivors of Grenfell. Each episode is emotional but inspiring and completely different to anything I’ve done before.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO EMULATE YOUR SUCCESS BEHIND A MICROPHONE?

It is really important to own who you are. I could not do this if I tried to be someone else. I like having fun. I like telling stories. I love talking about football from my point of view. But I also speak how I speak and that is something that took me a long time to truly own, I remember getting criticised by viewers for some of my pronunciation.

I remember when I started, it was similar to when I had football trials back in the day. Back then, I was playing how I thought people wanted me to play, and my career in the media started similarly. However, as I built experience and confidence I was able to start just be me and grew more comfortable doing so.

The media industry can be very selfish, with everyone looking over their shoulder. You have to find friends in the industry that you can trust. People that will help you develop but also not hold you back because it serves them. You have to find those people and it takes time and you will get some of that wrong. But you learn from your experience and use that to hopefully help others on their journey too.

You also have to love what you do. Wrighty’s House does not feel like a show to me, it is literally a conversation between me and my people and one of the best parts of my week. I think that is a really important factor in its success: doing it because you enjoy it. I go through the rest of my week and I’m constantly thinking how we improve the show or I make a note of something I experienced or thought of that I want to mention on the next episode – you live and breath it because you ultimately love it and you hold yourself to a high standard.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER PODCAST HOSTS OR FOOTBALL PUNDITS THAT YOU TAKE INSPIRATION FROM?

Everyone on the House is a massive inspiration for me. They are incredibly talented and experts in their own right, they also talk about football in very pure and accessible way.

Musa and Ryan have made football more inclusive and a safe place for everyone. I learn from them all the time. They have mastered the art of just capturing people’s minds. You sit there listening and you are like “this is awesome’! As far as hosting goes, you won’t find many better. Every word they say becomes a part of your everyday dictionary.

Emma Hayes inspires me and is great to work with. Her understanding of the game and ability to give that back to the audience in a way that is very easy to understand is something I am always working to improve.

Jamie Carragher is also one of my favourite pundits because he brings football analytics together with a deep understanding of fan culture and how fans feel.

I am very fortunate to work with Kelly Cates – every time I am on with Kelly I learn something different. She has improved me as a pundit and host. She’s incredibly calm and witty, she keeps you on your toes but broadcasting with her is a pleasure.

WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT FAVOURITE PODCASTS?

There are so many podcasts that I really enjoy that have good hosts with a range of styles and there is a new generation that is constantly creating new ways to consume football. I listen and try to support as many of them as I can. Musa and Ryan’s Stadio pod is one never miss along with Arseblog, and I also listen to the boys at Stoppage Time TV, the Goal Diggers girls & Sharky Does Sports. All really authentic football analysis and discussion pods.

I am also still working my way through GIANT which is a football documentary series that just tells some incredible football stories.

Outside of football I’m currently loving Mafia which is a deep look into the American criminal underworld.

Last summer was a pivotal moment for women’s football in the UK. An England victory was then bettered as they urged the government to increase P.E. provisions for girls in schools across the country. Women’s football crowds are up, TV figures are growing, and more of these amazing women are household names – and this summer, it’s going up another notch.

The Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand kicks off in July, as England look to follow up their Euros win while Rep. Ireland will be bringing their World Cup debut.

For fans who can’t make the trip out there, fear not! Upfront, the women’s football podcast, from the team behind the Football Ramble, will be Down Under with all the latest news from what’s set to be another landmark moment for the women’s game.

Upfront’s tournament coverage last summer earned them a silver award in the 2022 British Podcast Awards, as hosts Rachel O’Sullivan and Chloe Morgan captured the unique spirit of the international tournaments. They’ll have episodes recorded live at matches, across both countries, where they’ll be engrossed amongst worldwide fans. All delivered with the fun, occasionally chaotic tone that makes Upfront the biggest women’s football podcast in the UK. Think: the best mates’ football holiday ever, sent straight to your podcast app multiple times a week.

“One of the best parts about Upfront so far has been covering the Euros together” states Rachel. “To get to do that for a World Cup AND down under in Oz and New Zealand is even more exciting. Embedding yourself in a tournament is so fun and doing it so far away from home makes it a real adventure. I can’t wait to try and bring some of that atmosphere and tournament vibes (and the football of course) to our listeners.”

Upfront has never been afraid to tackle the big issues affecting women’s football; from the ACL injuries that threaten England’s chances, to how young girls from minority backgrounds haven’t felt the effects of the national team’s success. Guests from all corners of the game have joined Rachel and Chloe to raise awareness of issues and causes vitally important to the women’s football community.

For all your latest news and reaction from this summer’s women’s World Cup, make sure you’re subscribed!

From Issue #026 of the Pod Bible magazine, the Breaking Bread column from Stak took a deep dive into the new Formula 1 podcast in poll-position of the podcast charts – P1 with Matt and Tommy…

This F1 season, P1 with Matt and Tommy is the go-to podcast for all your track reactions, pre-race predictions and exclusive access into the world of Formula 1. Renowned F1 fans Matt and Tommy have joined the Stak network (makers of Football Ramble and Abroad in Japan) to bring you their biggest podcast yet, as they dive into every single race with the infectious enthusiasm of two Formula 1 fanatics.

Matt & Tommy are renowned in the F1 world, having formed an impressive following while working at Formula 1 outlet, WTF1. With over a million followers between them, they are now embarking on their new adventure of P1, and their fandom remains as strong as ever. But this isn’t purely a podcast Matt and Tommy are creating a new platform for the sport, bringing fans YouTube race reviews, live Twitch watch – alongs, and news bursts as and when they happen. You’ll never miss an F1 moment again!

The reaction to P1 has been electric (…in a petrol – head kind of way). In its first month, P1 with Matt and Tommy amassed a following of half a million across the podcast’s social channels and over 1 million podcast listeners already. This led to P1 climbing the podcasting charts, and taking #1 spot in Apple and Spotify’s top UK charts, showcasing its global podcasting reach.

“The thing I have always loved most is sharing the sport I love with other like minded fans, and this is not going to change with P1.” explains Matt “Whether it’s a podcast, a livestream, a YouTube video or a social media post, we’ll be there every step of the way throughout the 2023 F1 seas on and beyond. I’m also really excited to work alongside Stak to take the P1 podcast to another level now the season is up and running!

Stak p1 hosts Matt and tommy

To finish, we quickly asked Matt & Tommy for their pole positions in each of these topics, F1-related or otherwise!

P1…FORMULA 1 DRIVER (OF ALL TIME!)

Matt: Michael Schumacher. He will forever have a special place in my heart, perhaps I loved him so much when I was a kid purely because I was a glory supporter, who knows. He certainly cemented my love for Ferrari till the day I die!

Tommy: Fernando Alonso. I have supported lots of different drivers over the years watching F1 but I’m an Alonso fanboy now and I was back in the mid-2000s too.

P1… BREAKFAST FOOD

T: It’s difficult to pick just one as I’m a big foodie but I’d have to go with pancakes. American style with maple syrup on!

M: I’m usually jus a standard cereal person, but that’s because I’m too lazy to sort anything else out in the morning. My ideal breakfast would a e Full English though.

P1… RACE TRACK

M: Interlagos. How can anyone not love this track? It delivers racing action times and time again. Whether it be an incredibly close qualifying, changeable weather conditions or just pure chaos unfolding, you just know that when it’s time for the Brazilian Grand Prix, you’re going to be entertained.

T: Spa. It may not have produced the best races recently but it’s a classic that belongs on the calendar. It’s old school, has an amazing flow and it’s always the track I’d pick to do laps on in a racing game.

P1… SPORT OUTSIDE OF F1

M: Tennis. Not a lot of people know that I’m a complete tennis nut when I’m not thinking about my one true love, Formula 1. I try to play tennis at least 3 times a week and watch it whenever I can. My best shot has got to be my topspin forehand…

T: Football. My team is Leeds United so it’s a very different experience following them than it is supporting Max Verstappen in F1!

Best known for his prowess between the goalposts, former Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman now finds himself behind the mic as host of his very own podcast Seaman Says. We caught up with David to hear about how the podcast came to be, some of the guests he’s had on and his big live show coming up on Monday 24th April at the Clapham Grand, London!

PB: Tell us about your podcast! What’s the idea behind it?

DS: When I was first approached about doing a podcast I was intrigued to learn about the format and potential to reach the fans, and now after a few seasons I’m loving it. My co-host Lynsey Hooper and I chatting on topical football matters, as well as reminiscing about the game and it’s characters. We do predictions every week (which is very competitive!) and I nominate a ‘Save of the Week’. Guests also pop up. Matt Lucas, Russell Brand, Tony Adams, Ian Wright, Anita Asante, Frank le Boeuf and Mo Farah to name a few. It’s brilliant putting questions to the guys and finding out more about them.

How do you find podcasting in comparison to other media work?

When I was first approached, I had no idea what a podcast was! But now after a few seasons, I’m really enjoying it. It’s relaxed, we have the freedom to discuss what appeals to us, guests open up and things are fiercely competitive with our Seaman Says Fantasy Football League!

You have a rotating cast of guests on the podcast. Can you tell us about some of them?

We’ve been lucky to have on a wide variety of guests. It was great to actually be the one asking Piers Morgan the questions for a change! Robbie Williams is so knowledgeable about football with great stories, therefore him coming on twice was brilliant. Really eye opening to chat with fellow keepers such as Peter Schmeichel, Joe Hart, David James and Aaron Ramsdale. We’ve had high profile names from other sports such as Sir Ian Botham. Although he loves his football, he’s also big into his fishing, so I think we spoke more about that than football!

Can you tell us about the live show you have coming up?

With Perry Groves hosting and Ray Parlour as a guest, we’re descending on the Clapham Grand on Monday 24th April. It’s set to be a lively evening with the opportunity for fans to participate and win giveaways. In the first half, I’ll be doing a Q&A, covering starting as a youth player at Leeds United, through to lifting the FA Cup as Arsenal captain as well England highlights including Euro ’96. In the second half, we’ll be recording an episode of the podcast along with Ray.

Normally we record the podcast virtually as the team are based all over the country, so will be great to be there in front of a live audience. Really looking forward to it. Tickets still available; www.seamansays.co.uk/live

What’s the plan for the podcast moving forward?

Keep doing what we’re doing. Keep enjoying ourselves and continue to grow the number of fans tuning in (as long as they don’t beat me in our Fantasy League!).

Hear the England & Arsenal legend as you’ve never heard him before across the season. Chatting about the ups and downs of the league alongside some of the biggest names in the worlds of sport & entertainment, join David Seaman throughout the season.

Jonathan Reynolds is podcast manager for The Race Media, motorsport’s leading independent podcast publisher. The Race Media shows cover the whole range of motorsports – Formula 1, MotoGP, Indycar and Formula E – in podcasts such as WTF1 and The Race F1 Podcast.

They recently announced that The Race F1 Podcast will be playing their 1st live show at Pod Live in London, in February, with Formula One pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz as their guest.

We caught up with Jonathan to talk about motorsports, Pod Live and facing a live audience…

Tell us about The Race F1 Podcast and how you got involved?

The Race Media launched in 2020 with the aim of creating the best motorsport content in the world – and our F1 podcast was one of the first pillars. We love podcasting as a medium because it’s such a great way to connect fans quickly and conveniently with the information that matters, with very few constraints. If important news breaks, wherever our journalists are in the world, they can grab their mics and we can have a podcast out within hours. I joined the company in early 2022, having spent 9 years working for Formula 1, where I developed the company’s audio strategy and launched and produced several long-running podcasts, including F1: Beyond The Grid and F1 Nation, as well as the documentary series F1 On The Edge. I’m incredibly proud that those podcasts are still going strong, but it’s been great fun helping to develop a different suite of content.

The Race Media shows covers a range of motorsports – Formula 1, MotoGP, Indycar and Formula E – which discipline is your current favourite to cover?

Our mission statement is to super-serve the motorsport super fan, so we take great pride in covering each of these championships. With F1 being the pinnacle of the sport, and rapidly increasing in popularity, I naturally spend a lot of my time working across our F1 content. We feel we have something for everyone, with our flagship show The Race F1 Podcast offering news and analysis from expert journalists on the ground at races, our F1 Tech Show lifting the lid on the amazing world of F1 technology, and Bring Back V10s offering fans a nostalgia trip back to an era when the sport was loud on and off track. Completing our F1 set we also have our sister show, The WTF1 Podcast, which is made for fans, by fans and gets right to the heart of F1 fan culture.

We hear Pod Live will be your first live event. What can the audience expect from the show?

We want to retain all of the elements listeners would expect from the podcast normally – informed opinion, insider knowledge, bad jokes! – but with another, extra special layer on top. Ted Kravitz, Sky Sports F1’s pit lane reporter, is joining regulars Edd Straw and Scott Mitchell-Malm for the event, so the audience can expect some rarely heard behind-the-scenes tales, as well as a few interactive elements that will remain a secret for now!

What are you looking forward to most about podcasting in front of an audience?

Listener questions often drive the direction of conversation on the podcast, but we’re really excited about the opportunity to connect more personally with our listeners, and to be able to present to them something a bit different and special. Our hosts record shows across the world as they follow the F1 circus from country to country, so it’ll be a real treat to have the chance to look an audience in the eye and answer questions face to face. At the end of the day, we’re all F1 fans, so it will be great to be in a room full of like-minded people, especially at a time of year when most people are craving the start of the season!

Which of the other podcasts appearing at Pod Live are you most excited about seeing?

As a huge cycling fan and avid listener to The Cycling Podcast, it has to be Daniel Friebe and the gang. I love the approach they’ve taken to podcasting over the years, from their day-to-day coverage of Grand Tours to the more documentary orientated episodes they put out. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do on the day!

Sports Horn is a collaboration between comedy duo The Exploding Heads and the team behind The Football Ramble, it’s an incisive parody of testosterone-fuelled sports radio. This is the Behind Stak column from Issue #023 of the magazine.

The Ian Fiveankles Breakfast Show has just launched on Sports Horn, the UK’s third most talked about Sports Radio network. Co-host Anthony Richardson caught up with former professional footballer turned current pundit Ian Fiveankles.

Anthony: Ian Fiveankles, it must be good to be back in the pundit saddle!

Ian: It is, Anthony. Sports Horn is a top, top, top, top, top, top radio station and we all know that the breakfast show is the most important meal of the day. Don’t get me wrong…

A: I won’t get you wrong…

I: …don’t get me wrong, I had a glittering career on the football pitch, but this studio in Feltham just off the A316 is where the real dreams are made.

A: You played for 17 different clubs and were awarded LDV Vans Trophy Most Improved Player three times. You have a winning mentality, but will you win over the ears of the nation?

I: I’ve always said that if I can mark Muzzy Izzet out of a game (twice) then I can do anything. I’ve even nearly got back together with my ex-wife Denise! So I’m more than capable of being a sports broadcaster every bit as good as your Jamie O’Haras, your Scott Mintos and your Darren Bents of this world.

A: As good as Jermaine Jenas?

I: Absolutely not, Anthony. Jermain Jenas is untouchable. He’s like the Michaelangelo of our art. That guy’s presented The One Show.

A: What can we expect on The Ian Fiveankles Breakfast Show?

I: Well, Anthony, Sports Horn’s slogan is ‘Horning Sport From The Rooftops’ and my show will be no exception. I’ll be talking about the game from inside the white lines, outside the white lines and occasionally on the white lines. I’m fingering the pulse, I’m 110% in the know and I live three doors down from Steve Bould so we’re not short of a guest if desperate. Now don’t get me wrong…

A: I won’t get you wrong.

I: …Don’t get me wrong, we’ll hear from proper fans too. I’ll half-listen to Mike from Aberdeen’s opinion on yesterday’s game before launching into an unrelated anecdote about the time me and Dennis Wise cut up Steve McMahon’s suit before a cup final.

A: Where do you see yourself in a year’s time?

I: The answer to that is simple, Anthony. I want to wake up in the arms of my ex-wife Denise, Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits playing on her phone, and with a Sports Radio Award under my pillow. We can but dream, Anthony. We can but dream.

After a seismic summer for the Lionesses – culminating in England’s first trophy for nearly sixty years – more eyes are on domestic women’s football than ever before. And, after their debut season ended with an episode underneath Wembley arch hours after England’s win, weekly women’s football podcast Upfront is back – and bigger than ever!

From the studio behind the ever-present Football Ramble podcast, Upfront has returned on its own brand new feed this season after it took over the Ramble’s sister feed earlier this summer. With that comes more amazing stories, sharp insight and hilarious tales from the heart of the women’s game – which is something hosts Chloe Morgan and Rachel O’Sullivan can’t wait for.

“There’s a lot of new talent in the league and I’m excited to see how they adapt and impact their respective teams. I’m also hoping to see growth and an impact from such a successful Euros with more bums on seats,” says O’Sullivan, founder of famed women’s football outlet, GirlsontheBall.

It was a hugely successful debut season for the team, with the show’s insight and infectious energy earning numerous placings in Best Of lists across Euro 2022. The show marked itself apart as sharp, opinionated and fun, something Rachel is proud of. “I loved it, not least because I got to talk about women’s football on the regular but I really enjoyed building an awesome relationship with the team. I really enjoyed exploring lots of different areas of the game with them.” And, even though they covered England’s win from Wembley, it still hasn’t set in. “I’m still thinking about it, still processing it, and still can’t believe it happened! It will stay with me forever!”

In the other big piece of news of the summer for the team, Chloe announced her retirement from football after a decade at the very top level for Tottenham Hotspur and latterly Crystal Palace, where she has taken the reigns as the club’s Media Manager and Presenter. “Retirement has been really bittersweet. You always feel like you might have one last game or season left in you but it also felt like the right time to move aside and let the next generation of talent come through. I’m passing on the gloves to two incredible keepers who I know will do an epic job of taking the club to the next level. I’m really excited to stay with the club and my teammates this year and highlight all the achievements and memories we’ll create. Plus, it means I’ll get a bit more time to dive into Upfront! Rachel will be sick of the sight of me!”

Even more listeners will be tuning in for that chemistry this season. With the Women’s Super League season well underway, the game’s huge rise in popularity is clear to see – Arsenal have already seen record-breaking crowds at the Emirates Stadium, while the Lionesses face the USA in front of a sold-out Wembley this weekend.

So, if you’re just getting into women’s football and want an insightful, inclusive guide for the season – or you’re a seasoned pro who’s after big opinions and big laughs – Upfront has got you covered! Every Tuesday, Rachel and Chloe will be joined by a special guest to discuss the biggest stories from across the women’s game; from WSL and international superstars through to its cultural heartbeat. Other episodes on the feed will feature full-length guest interviews, immersive on-location match audio and fascinating documentaries. There’s something for everyone from all corners of the game.

For the latest from the world of women’s football, search ‘Upfront’ in your podcast app to subscribe and listen now! New episodes are released every Tuesday.

Voiceworks Sport is a collective of sport audio experts that enable sports brands to engage more deeply with fans and reach new audiences. The organisation works with rights holders and brands to develop game-changing audio strategies and production execution. Founded in 2018, Voiceworks Sport is headed up by MD Sophie Hind, who has twenty years of audio experience spanning roles at the likes of Global, LBC and Capital. The business is backed by Communicorp UK and works with some of the biggest international brands in sport including The FA, Paralympics GB and EuroLeague Basketball.

We caught up with Sophie to learn how she works with clients, uniting fans through content and why she loves working in audio.

What do you personally like about audio and podcasting?

For me, audio and podcasting are just so intimate and unique. The first-person communication style is different to any other media; the way the brain processes audio contributes to an incredibly strong relationship between audience and broadcaster. With podcasts, this is amplified even more. Think about the power of consuming podcast content: headphones, alone, directed straight into the listeners ears.

What I love the most is the unstuffy, unscripted, authentic nature of many different genres in podcasting. You genuinely feel like you are part of a two-way conversation with the host compared to watching or listening to other types of broadcast content. Being able to consume content using your senses and building an image of what that audio “looks like” using your own brain is hugely powerful.

I also think it’s a hugely flexible and accessible medium, and that’s really important. The flexibility of podcasting gives space for niche topics that wouldn’t have a platform elsewhere. It’s also much faster and cheaper to create audio compared to other types of media.

What do you consider when taking on a new project or client?

We always start with the client’s overarching communication or marketing objectives. Once we understand what a client is trying to achieve and why, we can get moving with our creative response. For example, if it’s a sport related project, are we targeting existing fans or engaging with new fans globally? What can we do that’s different? Audio solutions and podcasting are limitless tools and should build on existing content strategy – not just try and replicate what’s already available out there!

The bottom line is, we are unlocking the power of audio to engage more deeply with fans and reach new audiences, so clear strategy is super important for any project.

Then comes all of the elements that make up brilliant podcasts, from hosts and presenters to guests, audio branding, distribution, and marketing of the content. In many instances we are also working with integrating a commercial partner, and the Voiceworks team is made up of experts with plenty of commercial radio experience, which gives an invaluable steer on strategy.

As a company you seem very fan focused, but we’ve seen that sports fans can sometimes be very polarised when it comes to content, coverage, social issues. Is this something you have to keep in mind with your role?

Rights holders do face a challenge, there’s no doubt about it. How can they create an authentic and interesting product, while also creating content that avoids criticism of the team, manager, or players when (on occasion) it might be warranted?

The solution is thinking more broadly and using audio as a way of uniting fans by delivering content that isn’t already being served to them elsewhere. Podcasting is a freer form, so we can really shake up the game in that sense.

We look to cater for everyone, that’s a benefit of podcasting – limitless bandwidth for content, which means that no niche needs to remain unserved. We welcome all perspectives that are respectful to others, and of course is suitable for our brand and sponsors.

Both the audio industry and the sports industry have a big gender disparity, and yet podcasting is proven to serve audiences that have been undervalued in other media. Do you think audio is well placed to engage these audiences?

I really do believe that audio is a safe space to find “your tribe” – be that gender related, sport related or any other niche you may have. It’s an ocean of opportunity that is accessible to everyone and can go a long way in engaging underrepresented groups.

Podcasting is a great place to redress the imbalances we see elsewhere but there is definitely still a way to go. That being said, there are no commissioners to say yes or no to an idea, unlike other forms of broadcast media. This allows podcasters to be more daring and creative in their choice of topic, which means that podcasting can go a long way in connecting like-minded audiences across the world.

If you have access to a USB, mic, and internet you are free to experiment with podcasting – it really can be that easy. This gives the space for many people to try out their ideas as the entry levels are low in comparison, to say, making a film.

Podcasting also has much more parity across all genders. In terms of sport, what could have been just one sentence on a national sports radio station can become a whole podcast series delving deeper into, say women’s football, with a super engaged audience.

There are some interesting stats out there that show just how well-placed audio is to engage underrepresented audiences. The recent Sounds Profitable Creators Survey found that podcast creators are still overwhelmingly male; however, there is far less bias towards white men than in traditional media because of the lower barrier to entry. What’s really interesting is that the podcasting space is far more ethnically diverse than the population. The theory is that those who aren’t seeing/hearing themselves represented in popular culture are creating their own media and filling the void, which is testament to how inclusive and accessible the medium is.

What is something you haven’t tried with Voiceworks Sport yet but would like to?

We are all, obviously, huge sports fans here at Voiceworks Sports and live sport audio is a great opportunity for us. Beyond this, owning the audio rights to global events would be incredible.

We’ve done a lot of work on short form audio content delivered via smart speakers but want to really crack the code of how to improve discoverability and user experience via voice. There’s so much opportunity within audio and the market is constantly evolving, so we’re heading in the right direction with all the exciting future projects that lay ahead.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in your role?

That’s the golden question… I’d say think big, have a clear plan, and move fast.

When we launched Voiceworks Sport, the Sport Social Podcast Network wasn’t even in our roadmap, but we saw an opportunity which married perfectly with our knowledge of creating great audio, audio technology and how to integrate commercial partners into content. Many rights holders are now putting audio in the ‘must have’ instead of ‘nice to have’ box, which just goes to show how audio really is a secret weapon waiting to be unleashed, and that gives us the momentum to go even bigger and better.

“In a society where everything has become so disposable and waste is one of the biggest problems affecting our society, we wanted to go back to a time where what you owned was treasured.”

– Charlotte Williams Sustainably Influenced

The Sustainably Influenced podcast was created by influencers Bianca Foley & Charlotte Williams to help guide people through the minefield of sustainability. Season 6 is now in the works and this season is all about the makers. Bianca and Charlotte will be speaking to artisans and businesses who are using traditional craftsmanship or practices. Our hosts believe sustainability was often naturally woven into the craft in pre-modern times. In their first episode the duo dive into the world of upholstery, proving that the traditional way of upholstering is more eco friendly as modern day techniques are replacing foam with Coconut fibres. Join Bianca and Charlotte as they discover the modern businesses taking us back to a simpler time.

Catch season 6 of Sustainably Influenced now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most podcasting platforms.

“We know we’re not perfect, but we consider sustainability in every decision we make”

-Flumi, The UncerTwenties

The UncerTwenties Podcast is a podcast for twenty somethings who don’t quite have their sh*t together. Each week, host Karis chats to a different guest about the trials and tribulations of the messy decade that is your twenties – laughing at the things that have gone wrong and celebrating the things that go right! Ultimately, this podcast proves that no-one truly has it all together and that’s ok. In one of the most recent episodes, Karis’s guest began making candles as a lockdown hobby. Little did they know that after a few short weeks they’d find themselves being inspired to turn that hobby into a fully developed business. Enter: Flumi – an earth-conscious homeware brand; creating products that are good for the home, mind and planet. So it was that this small idea very quickly turned into a thriving business. With over 15k followers on Instagram, Flumi has been featured in Glamour, Popsugar, Stylist and HEAT magazine, they’ve hired 2 additional team members and just celebrated their first birthday.

They might be too modest to acknowledge this achievement but their success comes as no surprise to the rest of us.

Check out the Uncertwenties podcast on popular podcast apps, where you can find a new episode released every Monday.

“Sport can unlock potential but also there are barriers on how we get people into sport.”

– Born Barikor, Talking Sport and Tech

The Talking Sport and Tech Podcast gives you a glimpse into the lives of inspiring leaders and entrepreneurs from the sport and physical activity sector. In episode three, hosts Milly Pelmore and Alex Zurita speak to the successful entrepreneur and founder of Our Parks Born Barikor. Born is a former athlete from a council estate in Tower Hamlets, who after finding himself with not enough money to join a gym but wanting to keep fit, came up with the idea of an accessible pathway to exercise for people from lower income homes by working with councils and development agencies to offer the public free outdoor exercise classes.

In this episode, Alex and Milly chat to Born about his journey as a founder, the determination to break down barriers to exercise and physical activity, the true meaning of a ‘community’, his advice to other founders in the sector, and his vision of getting 1,000,000 ‘Parkers’ fit by 2025.

Listen to Episode three of The Talking Sport and Tech Podcast wherever you listen to your podcasts.

“If you’ve had intercultural experiences and understand your own intersectionality, you actually have a wider approach to everything else because you know it’s possible.”

– Valerie Watson-Vega, Xeno

Xeno is a podcast and community exploring home, identity and belonging. Each month, host Isabella Mcdonnell holds a space for conversations on what it means to be culturally complex in a world that challenges those who are perceived as being different or “other”.

In Xeno’s latest episode, Isabella interviews Valerie Watson-Vega who is an educational psychologist and learning designer focused on intercultural education, decolonising knowledge, human rights and inclusive design. Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Valerie has been living in London since 2015. In this episode, Valerie discusses the changing sense of “otherness” one feels depending on one’s environment (touching on themes of intersectionality), the idea of what she calls her “urban Peruvian” identity, the after-effects of colonialism and neoliberalism in Peru, the wisdom of indigenous traditions and how we might re-educate ourselves to facilitate our social and cultural liberation.

Listen to Xeno now, where you can check out some more inspiring interviews and listen to intimate, complex stories that you may relate to.

Imriel Morgan is the Founder and CEO of the podcast club and agency Content is Queen. She is a Marketing Maven and cultural innovator in the podcasting industry. Imriel’s mission is to make podcasts inclusive, affordable and accessible.

The Women’s Euros are underway, and if you’re searching for a football podcast to keep you up to date with the latest in the women’s game, we’ve got just the one. From Issue #021 of the Pod Bible magazine, the Breaking Bread column from Stak spoke to the definitive women’s football podcast…

Upfront is the latest addition to the Football Ramble’s podcast stable and, since its first episode in November, the show has grown to become the definitive podcast on women’s football. Each week, presenters Flo Lloyd-Hughes, Rachel O’Sullivan and Chloe Morgan tackle more than just the results on the pitch. They dissect the most urgent issues surrounding gender inequality in football and take listeners to the very heart of women’s football’s vibrant, underrepresented culture.

“I think listeners have really enjoyed our fresh, light-hearted approach to things but also our opinionated chat,” Flo says. “I don’t think we’ve held back and although people may not agree with us all the time, it’s certainly got people talking about the women’s game.”

“I’ve absolutely loved it, working with Flo and Chloe has been so much fun,” Rachel adds. “I look forward to coming in and recording with them every week. We discuss the important things in the game but have fun while doing it!”

This summer will be a huge moment for women’s football, as England hosts the European Championships for the first time since 2005. More than 100 days out from kick-off, ticket sales had already smashed the previous record set by the last tournament in the Netherlands and, within a day of tickets for the final going on sale, Wembley Stadium had sold out. And England will be there, chasing their first ever major trophy.

Whether from the studio or on the road at different venues across the country, Upfront will bring you three shows a week throughout the tournament that cover the game’s biggest stories and bring this festival of football straight to your podcast app.

“We’re going to be doing regular shows throughout the tournament, keeping everyone up to date and doing it all in our usual Upfront style,” Flo explains. “But as some of us will be on the road covering the tournament there will be some unique new bits to the show.”

As part of the build-up, there will be interviews with some of the biggest names in the sport and a special Upfront Guide to the Euros, arming you with everything you need to know ahead of the curtain-raiser. The show will also be shining a light on the grassroots: the community clubs, the projects that will be providing a safe space for women and nonbinary people to play football during a truly unforgettable summer.

“I’ve really enjoyed the opportunities we’ve had to speak to other journalists, players, or managers throughout this season,” says Rachel. “It gives us different takes on a lot of different subjects and I’m looking forward to doing more of that during the Euros!”

And after the Euros? It doesn’t stop. The World Cup qualifiers continue in September before the main event in Australia and New Zealand next summer.

“Tournament football is special and particularly in England, nothing beats when the nation gets behind the team,” says Flo. “I can’t wait for that excitement and hype to build around the tournament.” Rachel shakes her head and says simply: “It’s going to be a huge, huge moment for the women’s game.” Don’t miss a second of it!

Subscribe to ‘Football Ramble Presents’ on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and other popular podcast apps to catch episodes of Upfront throughout the summer.
