Thinking of a trip to Japan in 2025? Well Pete Donaldson is here to help you take the plunge with all the essential travel tips…

2024 was a HUGE year for Abroad In Japan – the show turned six years old, Chris and Pete were reunited in Tokyo for the first time since the pandemic, and Chris became a Sunday Times best-selling author! With bi-weekly appearances on YouTube and a global community of listeners, the podcast has never been more popular – and neither has Japan!

Thanks to a sleepy yen and some compelling offers from airlines, there’s never been a better time to visit – so whether you’re planning a short layover, or a 21-day mega-break in Tokyo, Japan could be a top contender for your 2025 travel itinerary. And who better to guide you through every noodle-slinging, temple-trekking, capsule-hotel-crashing moment than award-winning filmmaker Chris Broad and England’s top Japan enthusiast, Pete Donaldson?

The podcast inbox is always bursting with questions like, “Where should I stay?”, “What’s the best ramen spot?”, and “Where can I find that weird fish-flake rice thing Chris keeps talking about?” Well, we’ve got you covered. We caught up with Pete to give you some essential tips to jump-start your Japan plans:

How To Fly

If time is short, the only airport worth floating into is Haneda – it’s a mere twenty minutes away from central Tokyo by car. It was built on a reclaimed chunk of the Tokyo bay and is so much closer than its smaller brother Narita, which means you get chopsticks deep into some gorgeous ramen even sooner!

How To Eat

If you’re wanting the best pork ramen – or financially ambitious sushi – you can usually find an excellent spot on most street corners or even inside most train stations in Tokyo. But why consume the sort of dish you can easily find at home? Mia Nagamatsu’s Katsuo Shokudo in Uguisudanicho gives you the chance to eat some incredible shaved dried fish on rice (katsuo-boshi). And with a queue that forms every morning at 8:30, it’s a pretty popular institution. If you fancy something a little less adventurous, then how about a ham and seafood okonomiyaki fried pancake in Sakura-tei in Harajuku?

Where To Stay

There’ll be those of us who want to experience Tokyo at full pelt – Capsule Hotels, Love Hotels, dozing off in a karaoke booth after the last train – and true, they’ll have a great (if sleepless) time of things. But somewhere between the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi and a Shibuya Centre Gai flower bed lies the salary man’s business hotel – brands like APA and Sotetsu Fresa provide small yet perfectly formed hotel rooms at more affordable prices than their larger cousins. Brands such as Dormy Inn provide a minimalist approximation of a relaxing onsen too (perfect for that jet lag!).

Where To Stray

Speaking of jet lag – or “time stupidity” as the Japanese call it – if you’re up at 5am, why not turn this to your advantage and get on an early train to somewhere a bit more peaceful? There are your usual suspects, Kyoto or Nara – but if you’ve brought your hiking boots, why not catch a bullet train North into the mountains of Nikko? The national park provides wild monkeys, hot springs and – in a country famed for its temples – Toshogu Shrine is one of the best you’ll see here!

If that’s left you scrambling to book the next available flight to Tokyo or if you just want to hear more about all things Japan, listen and subscribe to the Abroad in Japan podcast. New episodes are released every Monday and Thursday!

We caught up with Tania & Adam from the Jits Into The Sunset podcast to discuss how the show came about and the trials and tribulations of living full time on the road. Check out our interview for the Pod Bible Podcast above and read their answers to our Have You Heard? questions below!

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?
We are Tania & Adam, travel filmmakers (and now podcasters) living full-time in our 24-year-old rusty campervan, Jits for the last 3.5 years. Our podcast is all about travel, adventure, and road trips. We share our own stories from the road but we mainly use our podcast as a platform to chat with people with interesting & inspiring travel stories; from backpacking to van life, boat life, and everything in between! The one thing that they all have in common is that before taking the leap, they were just like you and me… normal people with a big dream to pursue a life different from the conventional 9-5. In our podcast, we learn about their personal stories, mindset & mantras through the lens of travel & adventure.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?
It’s a hard one to pinpoint point but perhaps it was ‘S-Town’. We both love this journalistic approach to podcasting that hooks you into the story straight from the get-go.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?
As huge podcast binge-listeners ourselves, we toyed with the idea of starting our own podcast for over two years before we finally took the plunge. Admittedly, it was the fear of failure and ‘imposter syndrome’ that initially held us back. Then one day, when we were feeling brave, we decided to just go for it! We ripped off the bandaid and released our first episode (that we had recorded 18 months prior). Luckily for us, our community was so incredibly supportive that that first episode shot up to the top 5 UK podcast charts, under the ‘Travel & Culture’ category. We were gobsmacked! Our main motivation for starting the podcast has been to share and inspire others to pursue their aspirations of travel & leading an alternative lifestyle, no matter what age or stage in life they are at.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?
We both love to listen to Steven Bartlett’s ‘Diary of a CEO’ as we both appreciate Steven’s interview style. He always seems to get to the heart of what makes the guests who they are.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?
We would absolutely love to get Ben Fogle and Mike Horn but there are so many incredible people out there that we stubble upon all the time, that we know would make amazing guests!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?
We’ve quickly learned that podcasting is probably one of the purest forms of ‘social media’. In a world where short-form content is king and click-bait YouTube thumbnails and titles make or break the success of a film, podcasting goes against the grain and holds its own. Podcasting is intimate and it taps into something far more meaningful than what can be conveyed in 6 seconds or less, and that is connection & context. It’s the intonations and pauses in people’s voices re-telling their stories in an open and vulnerable way. It’s being welcomed into a conversation with a new friend. By far, some of the most meaningful and heartfelt messages that we receive from our community are from those that listen to our podcast, week after week. As they say, “radio is like TV but with better pictures”.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?
To get to know us better and our back story, we recommend starting from the beginning with episode 1. But if you’re looking to get a taster of our interview style and the type of guest we love to welcome, then we highly recommend listening to episode 21 titled ‘From Adversity Comes Opportunity – Retirement Rebel, Siobhan Daniels (60+ Solo Female Van Life)’.

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?
We we love for you to head over to our website www.jitsintothesunset.com where we have our Podcast, YouTube & Instagram + other socials linked.

Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard of yet. While the Oh. My. Pod. section in the magazine gives a quick shout out to shows of that ilk, Have You Heard? aims to go deeper in an effort to spread awareness for shows that deserve more exposure! We recently caught up with the husband and wife team behind Our Savings Starts Tomorrow, a travel podcast with a twist…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

My name is Jon Watkins and this is my wife Jenn. I have been a morning radio host for over fifteen years. Secretly behind the scenes, my wife has been the funny one, writing my best on-air stuff. During the pandemic, with our kids downstairs destroying the house, we decided to give podcasting a try. We love to travel and seem to come back from every trip with a disaster story or a list of “don’ts” for next time. So, that’s what we decided to do for our podcast! Anyone can give you travel “tips” but not everyone can share a story about being on a cruise ship in a hurricane. Or spending the day chasing down Kevin Bacon in Napa. But we can!

What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?

It was the same for both of us, Serial Season 1.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I think that we were late to the party. Everyone kept talking about “My Favorite Murder“, the “Joe Rogan Experience” or “Serial”. We decided to listen to the latter and then compare notes each night. Jon was usually wrong with his assessment of each episode.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

Although we are a travel podcast, we are not striving to be a bland travel guide. We have great stories!. We want our stories to be engaging and inspire the listener to go on another adventure. That’s the whole point of, Our Savings Starts Tomorrow. We’re so excited to book our next trip, that our savings will have to wait. As for inspiration, we both love Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. Other podcasts that we listen to (separately, I swear we don’t do everything together) are; Revisionist History, Office Ladies, SmartLess and Absolutely Not.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

We’d love to interview celebrities and comedians who share their travel stories. We both loved Stanley Tucci’s Searching for Italy TV series, so he’s on our list. Andrew Zimmern is another. Of course, Conan O’Brien too since he has his travel show.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

We do a twenty minute podcast, which means we spend more time doing stuff for the podcast instead of actually recording it! It’s hard to stand out when there are so many podcasts; including a ton hosted by celebrities! When every former TV show has a nostalgia recap podcast hosted by its star, it’s difficult to compete. The worst part? We love those recap shows! Have you listened to Welcome to Our Show by the cast of New Girl?! So good.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Our Denver episode was a lot of fun and one of our more recent episodes. We added in a new segment where we share reddit travel stories, and that was fun to do. Make sure to listen so you can hear about being pulled off a bus in the Brazilian Rainforest with a gun to your face! Each episode is stand alone, so find one where you want to visit. Disney World? We have a three-part on the parks. Alaska? There’s an entire episode dedicated to it. Nashville? We’ll tell you the bars that the celebrities hang out at. Oh, one more- if you listen to the Cabo episode, you’ll hear what happens when you drink the unfiltered water (spoiler… it’s not great).

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

We’re everywhere! Of course, please start by listening to our podcast on whichever directory you use. Our Instagram is @OurSavingsStartsTomorrow. We recommend starting there so you can see some cool travel pics. Or www.oursavingsstartstomorrow.com.

Many people have found solace in travel podcasts whilst travel has been curtailed during the pandemic. But one travel podcast has resonated with many listeners (35,000+ a week in fact) through its mix of nostalgia for special places and the familiarity of celebrities we feel we know. As it recently hit a 2 year podcast birthday, we spoke to Holly Rubenstein about her chart-topping podcast The Travel Diaries.

Holly Rubenstein
We heard a little bit about why you started The Travel Diaries on #085 of the Pod Bible Podcast – but why podcasting? What is it about the medium that appeals to you?

I was a huge podcast fan before I started my own. Every week I’d listen to the New York Times Daily, WTF with Marc Maron, The High Low, Table Manners, Here’s the Thing with Alec Baldwin and many more. I love podcasts because they offer me companionship – I have a weekly date with those hosts, and they keep me company while I’m walking the dog, cleaning the house and cooking dinner. As a travel and entertainment broadcast journalist, I saw an abundance of food, news, politics on offer but where was travel? There was a gap in the market there, and I was determined to corner it. Now I hope that my listeners have that same relationship with me!

Did you take inspiration from any podcasts in particular before you started?

My main inspiration actually came from an all time great radio show Desert Island Discs (now a hugely successful podcast) and how the format reveals so much about the guests and their lives through music. This got me thinking on how I could achieve the same – telling someone’s life story – but through the lens of travel. I’m also inspired by how other podcasters get their guests to open up and reveal honest truths – no one is better at that than Louis Theroux and I learned a lot from his podcast during lockdown.

You have just hit a 2 year podcast birthday – congratulations! – and your podcast has been the No.1 in the Travel charts on more than one occasion, with 35,000+ listeners a week. Did you think the podcast would get this far this quickly?

Thank you so much, I can’t believe how much the podcast has grown in that time. Fortunately, the podcast certainly reached a big audience and generated a lot of press attention during the Covid lockdowns, where the opportunity to ‘armchair travel’ was in such high demand. On the whole though, I’ve been told the podcast is a soothing listen – many people say it helps them drift off to sleep, which I’m choosing to take as a compliment! And along with getting to know a lot more about each guest, we’re all a bit curious about where celebrities like to spend their holidays, right?

What do you think makes a good guest?

Guests who are really evocative storytellers that just transport you with their words to far off lands. I also really appreciate the honesty of my guests, from sharing about grief, heartbreak and ill health, to love and success.

You’ve spoken to so many different people including many absolute legends of travel. But – who do you think would be the best travel companion?

Good question. Depends what I’m after. For adventure I’d take Simon Reeve, for wildlife spotting I’d take Gordon Buchanan, for foodie hotspots I think I’d go for Yotam Ottolenghi and for glamour and fun, Poppy Delevingne.

In Travel Diaries, you ask people to go through 7 chapters of their life through travel. Will we get to hear your answers to the 7 chapters at some point?

I am asked this a lot! I think so, when the time feels right – though I know I will find it just as hard as my guests to distil my travel experiences into just seven chapters.

Where can Pod Bible readers find out more about you and the show?

They can follow me on Instagram and Twitter @hollyrubenstein, and visit TheTravelDiariesPodcast.com – I’d love to hear from them.

Don’t get me wrong, the British Isles is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes, beaches and wildlife in the world, and now more than ever the public are seeking staycation destinations as their main getaways this year. The rise of ‘staycation culture’ has brought about a boom in the hospitality industry in some parts of the UK — but, as demand rises for Airbnbs and hotels across the country, so it appears do costs, forcing many to forfeit a trip away altogether.

For those of us whose thirst for adventure isn’t quite quenched with a trip down to Cornwall, here’s a few of my top travel podcasts that I hope may inspire future trips, providing excellent escapism and beautiful stories from the travels of some of our favourite voices.

In a fitting interview for Mental Health Awareness Week, we heard from Jay Worthy, host of the adventure podcast 28 Summers. He tells us how  reconnecting with nature, in the great outdoors, led to his podcast.

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

I got my start in life as a personal trainer over two decades ago and woke one day to find myself as the CEO of a $1 billion dollar company living in Chicago! After a massively adventurous childhood my life lost its adventurous edge, work and other commitments quickly took priority and my passion and desire for adventure was suppressed. After a series of life changing moments something had to change. Soon my family and I were heading home to the UK to hit reset. I am a father of 4, in my mid-40’s and I had just discovered I was seriously depressed despite all the trappings of success. I was suffering with anxiety and knew I needed to change trajectory. I began reconnecting with nature, in the great outdoors, to make space to think and soon began to reignite that adventurous joy from my childhood. In 2020, to share how transformational it had been for me, I launched the 28 Summers podcast – inspired by an interview with Jesse Itzler on the Impact Theory podcast. What started as a passion project quickly evolved – my story and those of my inspirational guests is already helping people from all walks of life reignite their spark and passion for adventure. After launching in July 2020 I have just released my 25th episode!

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

I don’t really recall the first ever podcast I listened to but I do remember the first one which had a really profound impact on me. It was 2018 and Tom Bilyeu was interviewing Jesse Itzler, a super successful serial entrepreneur and author. They were discussing where Jesse’s zest for life and passion for optimising every moment came from. Jesse explained that he had just turned 50 and that the average life expectancy for a male in the USA was 78 years. He shared with Tom that he had recently become fixated with the idea he might only have 28 summers left. For days after watching that interview I grappled with the idea that our individual atomic clock is counting down and we have no idea when it will hit zero. But what if we did? If we did know, what decisions might we make? How might we live our lives differently? In that moment the idea for my podcast was born – in its simplest form, it’s focused on the idea of living everyday adventurously and embracing the wonder of life; as we never know when the ride may be over.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

I wanted to share inspirational stories of people doing incredible things to help others looking to live more adventurously. For me, recapturing my adventurous inner child has been genuinely transformational in terms of both my physical and mental health and I felt that others might feel the same. So far the feedback has been incredible and listeners are already sharing amazing feedback with me.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

My go-to podcasts are the Toughgirl Podcast (with Sarah Williams) and Chatting to a Friend (by Catie Friend) – both interview exceptional and inspirational women and help spotlight their stories; as a father of two girls I love that these incredible women have these platforms to share their stories. I also love the High Performance Podcast with Jake Humphreys and Damian Hughes which gives an amazing insight into the minds of some of the world’s best performers.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

It’s so hard to pick one! I’d love to have Ben Fogle, Jason Fox, Ranulph Fiennes or Laura Bingham join me to chat all things adventure!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

Probably that consistency is key. I have only been going since July 2020 but I am now up to 25 episodes and hitting a regular weekly cadence of releasing the podcast and am finding that rhythm is really good for growing the audience and meeting their expectations. When I find a podcast I love I always get disappointed if they miss a release day so I’ve tried to keep that top of mind with my own podcast.

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

I would say the interview with Max Woosey (Season 2, Episode 13). The episode with Max is actually quite short but it perfectly sums up the notion of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Max is 11 years old and was given a tent by his terminally ill neighbour under the promise he had to have an adventure in it. Max has slept outside in his garden for a whole year inn that tent and raised £500K for the hospice that cared for his friend. It’s the perfect example for the podcast; Max has had an incredible adventure and done something truly exceptional, all from his back garden!

Issue #013 of the Pod Bible magazine saw a new regular column from our partners Stakhanov. This is Breaking Bread.

Chris Broad created his multi-award winning YouTube channel Abroad In Japan after moving to Japan to work as an English teacher in 2012. In the 8 years since its inception, Abroad In Japan has amassed over 2 million subscribers. Pete Donaldson, a co-owner of podcast production company Stakhanov, met Chris when he interviewed him for his radio show. Already a fan of the channel, Pete joined forces with Chris and the podcast was born in 2018. Since then, the podcast has pulled in over 11.5 million listens. Abroad In Japan is currently the only Stakhanov show that does not record on-premise, offering a unique set of production challenges – from the logistical to the very technical. As broadcasters have been forced to adapt to lockdown restrictions, remote recording has become an art of its own – one that Chris and Pete have long had to master.

Remote Recording with Stakhanov

What is your remote recording set-up?

C: Once Pete convinced me we should do the podcast, I snapped up a Rode NT1A condenser mic and that’s been my set up for 3 years now! We started out having a Skype call and recording our audio locally then mixing it together, and these days we use a service called Zencastr which does it for us. While most of the episodes are recorded from my apartment, the beauty of doing our podcast remotely is I can stick the microphone in my backpack and record from wherever I am. For example, last week I was in Tokyo for a meeting and I was able to record from my hotel room!

How have you had to adapt the show in the face of the pandemic?

C: Given both Pete and I are sitting in rooms 8,000km away, we’ve actually not had to change anything since the pandemic started. On the contrary, our setup has helped us weather the storm better than other podcasts, I think, which have had to quickly adapt and abandon the comfort of their recording studios. We could never have envisaged our setup would prepare us for a situation of this scale.

P: Yeah, to be honest, I’ve mainly been rolling with Chris’s schedule. Being in Japan, he’s had a lot more capacity to get out and about. While London’s been in lockdown, Chris has been all over the place – I’m well jealous!

C: For the three years we’ve been recording, Pete has recorded in London and I’ve recorded in Japan. Typically we record on Tuesday at around 6 pm Japan time and 10 am for Pete back in the UK, with both of us hunched over a cup of coffee! Still, my favourite episodes are the ones where Pete visits Japan and we get to record face to face. Hopefully, we can make it happen again in 2021!

What are some of the challenges of recording remotely?

C: Although I have the benefit of being able to host the podcast on the go, the downside is that it can take extra hard work to make sure Pete and I sound natural despite the distance. In the early days when using Skype, there could be a delay of a second or so which could lead to awkward pauses, most of which we removed in post-production.

P: I’m with Chris! Whereas most people featured in these pages will be painfully aware of the limitations and challenges when it comes to recording shows in homemade insulated tents made of duvets and blankets, we’ve been wrestling with the best way to record remotely since the beginning. Our biggest adversary is latency. We’ve had to find our rhythm over the last three years as London to Sendai is quite the distance for VOIP!

C: Yeah – it’s incredible to think we’ve recorded over 150 episodes in this exact format for the past 3 years. But it’s worked surprisingly well and many of our listeners early on mistakenly thought we were in the same room recording together.

Have You Heard? is a series in which the team from Pod Bible meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard of yet. While the Oh. My. Pod. section in the magazine gives a quick shout out to shows of that ilk, Have You Heard aims to go deeper in an effort to spread awareness for shows that deserve more exposure! We recently spoke to travel journalists Ash Bhardwaj and Pip Stewart about their brand-new, immersive travel podcast The First Mile, which launched earlier this month.

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

Pip: We are travel journalists, Pip Stewart and Ash Bhardwaj. The First Mile brings you untold stories from the world of adventure.  It’s a weekly podcast series that explores everything from the ethics of cultural tourism, to how to document your journeys and make a living from travel. We navigate this territory with some of the world’s greatest travellers and they reveal key moments in their own careers. They talk about how they got their first break in travel writing, planned life-changing expeditions, or made the switch from the corporate sector to a life of adventure. And alongside these in-depth interviews are travel-narrative dispatches. These are evocative field recordings from our own adventures, which take the listener along for the ride. In the first season, you can join us in Annapurna (Nepal) and Whanganui (New Zealand) where we report back on rites of passage, celestial navigation, the joys of moonshine liquor, and a whole lot more!

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

Pip: The Ted Radio Hour.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

Ash: Podcasting is the perfect format for travel storytelling. Its immersive nature helps us transport our listeners, not just tell them what we’ve seen. As well as the narrative dispatches, Pip and I wanted to go beyond anecdotal travel interviews, to really dig into the tips, tools and knowledge of our guests, to help our listeners make the most of their own journeys.

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

Pip: I’m a big fan of From Our Own Correspondent in terms of digging deeper into a place. About as far from adventure travel as you can get, I also love the interiors podcast, The Great Indoors, for the dynamic between the hosts. There’s something comforting about listening to friends chat about things they’re experts in – hopefully this comes across in our podcast too. Fingers crossed!

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

Pip: I’m going to be greedy and ask for three. I’d love to interview Devla Murphy, the 88-year old touring cyclist and author. She’s had some incredible adventures. Secondly, Michael Palin, I enjoyed watching his shows and reading his books when I was growing up – thinking “I’d love to do that,”  Thirdly, Barack Obama. In 2015 he joined Bear Grylls on his show Running Wild with Bear Grylls. I’d be fascinated to find out how (and if) travel and adventure has informed his politics and what he’s learnt from the outdoors. I have a theory that politics would be a better place if we made all politicians spend time cycle touring and then camping before they took office. I’d love his view…

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?

Pip: Everything takes longer than expected!

Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Pip: If you want an honest look at what it means to be a travel writer (and how to fund it) listen to award-winning writer Monisha Rajesh’s episode. Levison Wood’s episode is great if you want to hear about how he walked the Nile – and why failure led him there. For some armchair travel, check out our first dispatch episode from Ash’s photographic trip to Nepal. He treks high into the Annapurna mountain range, encounters tea houses and shares stories of the amazing people he came across. This episode also delves into the ethics of tourism and how we can all travel a little better. We will be releasing more episodes with some of the world’s best travellers every Wednesday…

Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

Ash: I’m on Twitter and Instagram as @Ashbhardwaj.

Pip: Find me on Instagram @PipStewart or Twitter. We’d love to hear what you think of the podcast!
