Long before she hosted Cuddle Club, Lou Sanders has been a darling in the podcast scene. To celebrate our Issue #030 coverstar, we’re revisiting the Podcast Prophet for issue #004 of the magazine, and celebrating the top guest appearances of Lou Sanders!

Lou Sanders is a recognisable face on our TVs, often stealing the show. Seemingly out of nowhere she put in side splitting appearances on Hypothetical, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and, of course, Taskmaster. But to those in the podcast world it wasn’t out of nowhere, because she has been tearing it up as a guest on a wide range of podcasts for years now!

Lou’s unique takes on subjects have been what made her stand out on TV and they’re exactly what makes her a consistently hilarious and rarely repetitive podcast guest. Here’s some of our favourite episodes…

DRUNK WOMEN SOLVING CRIME
15: The Mother of All Criminals and Stolen Bermuda Shorts // Nov 2018

DWSC has been one of the blow up successes of podcasting, and, as luck would have it, two of Lou’s favourite things are drunk women and solving crime! The perfect guest, right? Not quite. She’s now sober. But fear not, as that doesn’t hinder her ability to approach the crimes in question from the strangest of angles. It makes no sense that she’s the only sober person. Listen now >>

UNEXPECTED FLUIDS
E4 S2: Sex tech Fails //Sep 2019

Taking your podcast live can throw up all sorts of issues but going live with a podcast about sexual mishaps and mistakes presents its own set of… unique hurdles. So who better for the London Podcast Festival appearance of Unexpected Fluids than the often uncomfortably comfortable Sanders! Lou gleefully shares tales of Tinder  terrors, fiancé foibles and so much more… Listen now >>

BIRTHDAY GIRLS’ HOUSE PARTY
New Year’s Eve // Dec 2018

The birthday girls bring party after party to the podcast world… but you don’t bring out a party pro like Lou Sanders for just any do. No, no no. You save Lou for THE NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY! Resolutions, choosing who to kiss at midnight and international New Year’s traditions all combine to make it a Birthday Girls’ House Party you really don’t want to miss. Listen now >>

FLIMS TO BE BURIED WITH
Christmas Special // 2018

After interrupting many episodes while living with host Brett at the Edinburgh Fringe, listeners were eagerly awaiting Lou’s full appearance on Films To Be Buried With. Sadly, things didn’t go quite to plan. As something of a precursor to her own podcast, instead of “first film you saw?” or “scariest/funniest film”, Lou proceeded to change the questions to “first cuddle you saw?” and so on. Ridiculous, but an unexpectedly tender and bloody lovely. Listen now >>

THE COMEDIAN’S COMEDIAN
110 // Feb 2015

Recorded three years before the episodes above, Lou’s chat with Stuart Goldsmith on The Comedian’s Comedian finds her in a much more calm and reflective mood as she discusses her career to date. Although there are sneak peaks of Lou’s performing persona, the majority of the podcast shows a side that we perhaps hadn’t heard before and allows us to learn about her journey as a comedian. It’s odd to think now that prior to 2010, nobody snickered at soggy bottoms and the Hollywood handshake was a level of human achievement which remained as yet out of reach.

But The Great British Bake Off is part of the furniture now, and despite shuffling presenters and channels has retained its cosy charms, and its weekly knockout format makes it a perfect show to whip up a quality watchalong podcast for. Some are presented to the judges – that’s you, podcast fan – and quickly found to have collapsed in the oven, or gone all funny in the middle, or unaccountably have mixed some pretty inadvisable flavours together.

Not these ones though. These are the podcasting equivalents of the star bakers: the best Great British Bake Off podcasts.

Baking Bad

Comedians Ross Drummond, Harry Monaghan and North American correspondent Claire Downs chew over the events of each episode, in an enjoyably home-brewed podcast which has a lot of fun with the transatlantic appeal of Bake Off – the show is, Americans are reminded, screened on every IMAX screen on the country each week. It’s got a magnificent take on the Bake Off theme tune for its opening sting too. Listen now >>

Worth the Calories

Matthew and Cathryn Vose run the rule over the contestants and their efforts, as you’d expect, but the cherry on the extra dollop of cream on top of this cake is their enthusiastic dissection of exactly how doable any of the individual entries are for the home baker. It’s that linking of the show and the slightly frazzled would-be cream horn maker which gives Worth the Calories its charm. Plus, there are bonus recipes in the show notes each time. Listen now >>

The Bake Down

There are only a select few people around who know what it’s like to enter the tent and feel its suffocating atmosphere play merry hell with their creme pat. The Bake Down brings in expert witnesses in Bake Off alumni Jane Beedle (series 7), Howard Middleton (series 4) and Dan Beasley-Harling (series 9) to join host Sarah Taylor to talk review the action each week, and recall what it was really like baking under the steely gaze of Paul, Mary and Prue. Listen now >>

Sticky Bun Boys

This is a watchalong pod which has wandered between Bake Off and The Traitors, but is back on Bake Off for the new series. David Atherton and Michael Chakraverty are particularly keen on the innuendo – they tend to title their episodes after new entries in the canon, like “dry beaver” – and as well as going over the twists and turns of each episode, they speak to former contestants for an inside scoop. Plus: they love a bonus dating disaster story. Listen now >>

Celebrating podcasters is a common occurrence, but in this modern world being a solid, grade-A guest is something that needs celebrating. Our Podcast Prophet for issue #007 of the magazine was Kathy Burke.

Let’s not beat around the bush… Kathy Burke is a national treasure. After a long time away from the public gaze, her introduction to social media and resulting leap into the world of podcast guesting has been a joy to behold. With Kathy as a guest you are guaranteed honesty, frankness and either a lot of swearing or one hell of an editing job. The following episodes offer a wide variety of conversations, but be sure to search Kathy’s name in your podcast app to discover even more brilliant guest appearances.

OUT TO LUNCH w/ JAY RAYNER
Kathy Burke // Dec 2019

In the recent surge of food podcasts, Jay Rayner has stood out with his ability to get so much from this guests. In this episode he takes Kathy to Scott’s (the most expensive private dining room in London) and she isn’t in the slightest bit intimidated. Tales of sugar sandwiches and rationed oxo cubes as a child juxtapose beautifully with her comfort in very different surroundings. Listen now on Acast >>

THE ADAM BUXTON PODCAST
Ep.15 & Ep.56 // Kathy Burke // Apr 2016 & Nov 2017

A double dose of Buxton & Burke for your ears? Yes please! After an extensive career overview on Ep.15 Kathy returned for another ramble-chat on Ep.56 where she and Adam discussed the theatre, cringy memories, illness, movies and so much more. As down to Earth and unaffected as ever, both episodes remind us of what a treasure Kathy is.  Listen now on Acast >>

DESERT ISLAND DISCS: 2005-2010
Kathy Burke // Aug 2010

Desert Island Discs is the ultimate music show that isn’t really about the music, and that rings all the truer in podcast form. Kathy’s appearance brings insight into her somewhat troubled upbringing, how punk and an English teacher saved her in different ways and the roles she’s most related to. Oh and arguably the greatest luxury item selection of all time…  Listen now on Acast >>

ALAN DAVIES: AS YET UNTITLED
#CreamCakesAndPernod // Aug 2016

Essentially an audio recording of a TV show, As Yet Untitled brings together four celebrities to discuss anything they like with no plan or agenda. Joining Kathy in this 20 minute episode are Omid Djalili, Alex Horne and Shaun Ryder as well as host Alan Davies. Some may cower when confronted by four big male characters at one table. Not Kathy Burke. Listen now Acast>>

STEP BACK IN TIME w/ RYLAN CLARKE-NEAL
1997 – Kathy Burke // Dec 2018

In Step Back in Time, Rylan Clarke-Neal invites a showbiz pal to go back to a momentous year from the 80s, 90s, or 00s for a celebration of its pop culture highlights. 1997 was the year of choice for Kathy meaning she was able to dicuss her early career (including the origins of Kevin & Perry) before moving on to the Teletubbies, Brit-pop, and the death of Princess Diana. Celebrating podcasters is a common occurrence, but in this modern world, being a solid, grade-A guest is something that needs celebrating. Our Podcast Prophet for issue #010 of the magazine was film fiend and creator of Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker.

Sardonic, cynical, and world-weary. Not our words but those used by Desert Island Discs in the blurb for their episode with our latest Podcast Prophet Charlie Brooker. Sounds like a great guest right? Well while that description of his on-screen persona may be accurate, there’s a whole lot more to Charlie. “I think when people meet me in the flesh, often they’re surprised that I’m not like this deadpan, horrible, sarcastic monster that I play on television…”. But what about on podcasts? You’ll have to listen to the following episodes to find out…

Launched in 2014, when podcasting was largely still beneath the radar, FUBAR Radio became Britain’s first talk station aimed solely at 18 to 34s. Fast forward to 2020 and FUBAR is now the most prolific live podcaster out there. Listening figures have grown rapidly and now exceed a million each month (1.125 million live listens and on-demand downloads*)

In July alone FUBAR’s live podcasts were featured in 181 press articles, from the Daily Mail to Page Six, reaching 22 million people** and these articles regularly feature video excerpts from live shows.

FUBAR has already recorded over 7,000 hours of original programming with no commercial breaks, news, weather or travel bulletins and in 2021 they plan to expand their schedule to feature up to 20 genre-specific live podcasts. They’ve pioneered the use of social influencers as hosts, featuring shows covering celebrity news, politics, sexual health, music, comedy, LGBT+ and much more. Here are a few highlights to check out.

ACCESS ALL AREAS
Ep 205 // Matthew Morrison
In a weekly one-hour fix of reality TV and celebrity news, TOWIE’s Bobby Norris and journalist Stephen Leng consistently deliver exclusive interviews that hit the national press. Ep 205 features Glee star Matthew Morrison, as he broke his silence over allegations made against his former co-star Lea Michele. An enormous list of guests have included, Strictly’s Craig Revel Horwood, Ashley Banjo, Jamie Laing, Kevin Clifton, Courtney Act, Charlotte Crosby, and Tiger King’s Dillon Passage. Listen now>>

FAN CLUB
Ep95 // Harry Hill
Nick Helm and Nathaniel Metcalfe are obsessed about one thing; what are you a fan of? The two comedians ask their guests about their favourite movies, music, 90’s sweets, favourite anything. Ep 95 features a rare interview with Harry Hill, who hilariously refers to COVID-19 as “the death of ventriloquism, as performers have to stand two metres apart”. Other episodes feature Jason Manford, Romesh Ranganathan, Samantha Morton, Matt Goss, Bob Saget and Johnny Vegas. Listen now>>

JAMES ACASTER
Ep 33 // Scroobius Pip
In the forerunner to the hit BBC TV series Sounds Random, FUBAR handed James his big break with this iconic 2016 live podcast series. In doing so, it reinvented the ‘Desert Island Discs’ format for the Spotify generation. Downloaded over half a million times, the question James asks is a simple one… “what embarrassing music choices lie in your personal library?”. This show sets guests’ devices to random shuffle to find out. With guests including Rick Edwards, Lembit Opik, Joel Dommett, Angela Barnes, Mike Wozniak and Rob Deering, few can stand the pressure of the random shuffle setting that reveals musical taste and a whole lot more about the guests themselves. Listen now>>

THE HANNAH WITTON SHOW
Ep 5 // Dodie Clark
In the same way that she entertains her hundreds of thousands of subscribers, YouTube sensation Hannah Witton has the freedom to speak her mind on this live podcast series on FUBAR. Joined by some of social media’s biggest names, including Rosie and Rosie, Riyadh Khalaf, Melanie Murphy, Grace Victory and Emma Blackery, Hannah takes a unique look at everything from sex, dating and body confidence, to books, films and TV. Listen now>>

MIKILL PANE AND MARCEL SOMERVILLE
Ep 135 // Brian Tyree Henry
In a celebration of street culture, rapper Mikill Pane (Ed Sheeran, Paloma, Faith, Example) and Instagram star Marcel Somerville (Love Island, Blazin’ Squad) are joined by an impressive line-up of guests from the world of music, TV, film and comedy. Guests include Blackstreet, George The Poet, Royce da 5’9″, Rozalla and a wealth of emerging talent such as The Manor, Bree Runway, Grim Sickers and Big Zuu. Ep 135 features Emmy Award nominee Brian Tyree Henry talking about his love of British humour, especially the classic sitcom Are You Being Served? which his mother calls “high-brow shit”. Reel Feedback started when host Kevin Dawson hit forty and decided to embark on a new creative endeavour. He already had a love of the format but had never heard a podcast that spoke in detail with the unknown names from the TV, film and music industries. Editors, producers and make-up artists have a huge wealth of information, both technical and anecdotal, that anyone who loves sound and screen would love to hear. Here are five episodes we’d love you to check out…

Terry Ackland-Snow The Art Director invited Kevin to the infamous Pinewood Studios to talk in depth about his incredible body of work on movies like Tim Burton’s Batman, Labyrinth and Aliens. The anecdotes come thick and fast as Terry talks being on the hedonistic, wild set of Tommy, taking James Cameron to Heathrow Airport to find a suitable Alien smashing vehicle and casually mentioning working weekends with Kubrick on 2001 to help build the lead character’s space pod. Humble, modest and engaging, Terry was Kevin’s first guest to work on such beloved, well-known movies.

Adrian Bushby The Grammy-winning engineer/producer’s career has been colourful, and he talks about it in ear-pleasing, often profane (once he finds out he’s allowed to swear) detail. Hear how he convinced Dave Grohl he was the man for the job which then resulted in his first Grammy win, working in close quarters with Muse and any Spice Girls story that starts ‘I’m not sure if I should tell this one’ will always be good. (Whisper) he tells it.

Christine Blundell Another Oscar-winner, this time for her make-up artistry on Mike Lee’s Topsy-Turvy. As well as all of Mike’s other films, she has also put her skills to Wonder Woman and Sunshine. Recorded at another home location, Christine spoke with Kevin in her kitchen, which was also the spot where she aided Benedict Cumberbatch in breaking a clause in his BBC contract. Other tales include how as a new mum, she had to ignore Brad Pitt calling after her at the Oscars to pump breast milk and working on the wonderful Paddington set.

Jon McCoy Kevin’s personal favourite episode is his talk with the Concept Artist for Blade Runner 2049, Avengers: Age of Ultron and most of the recent Star Wars flicks. He talks about his path into the industry and his work on World War Z (that big zombie pile up the wall was his idea), Tom Cruise’s exo-suit in Edge of Tomorrow and, alongside director Gareth Edwards, his work in creating that Darth Vader scene in Rogue One. He then tops up Kevin’s envy even more by revealing that he watched it being filmed.

Geoff Pesche Abbey Road Studios has been a mecca to many for years, but what about the staff behind the scenes? Mastering Engineer Geoff has kept the seat warm in his room at the studio for over a decade, and has worked his final polish magic for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Black Sabbath and Ed Sheeran. An absolute pulls-no-punches guy, Kevin warmed to Geoff in seconds with his affable nature, hilarious, honest tales of his time working on classics like New Order’s Blue Monday and Pulp’s Different Class, before merrily revealing the new Coldplay album, title and all (at the time unannounced).

Reel Feedback is relaunching big with a new season on October 23rd, the new format will incorporate familiar names from the industries as well as those behind-the-scenes. Already lined up are American actor/comedian Ben Schwartz (Parks & Recreation, Sonic the Hedgehog), actor/ writer Andy Nyman (Ghost Stories, Judy, Derren Brown) and Grian Chatten, frontman with Irish rockers Fontaines D.C who recently got pipped to the UK No.1 album slot by Taylor Swift. Ever wondered about those weird genres Netflix and other streaming services allot to TV programmes and films? So did the folks behind Because You Watched, the “podcast which brings you brand new ideas for TV shows and movies based on obscure video-on-demand categories.” We chatted with host Bec Hill about the process of getting a panel of comedians and creative minds to pitch ideas within a chosen obscure genre. And yes, hilarity ensues.

POD BIBLE: Did you have any prior audio content experience?
BEC HILL: I’ve been hosting and guesting on podcasts since around 2012. I also do occasional voiceover work, so if you come across any Australian-sounding NPCs in a video game, there’s a strong chance it’s me. Especially if the voice acting is particularly poor.

PB: Do you work with a producer? If so, what is that relationship like when creating new episodes of the podcast?
BH: Producer Rory co-hosts the show, so it’s really great to have him in the recording itself. He’s incredible at keeping up the pace and summarising everything, as well as being very quick and witty. It takes a lot of pressure off me to be the “responsible” one, which is the dream for any comedian, really! We also have off-air producers, Joe and Martin, who are such a pleasure to work with. So much so, I made us all friendship bracelets!

PB: Is it difficult to helm a show with multiple guests?
BH: With any other show, yes. But thankfully we seem to have found the sweet-spot which allows us to make the most of our guests without everyone trying to shout over the top of each other.

PB: What is it about film as a subject that you find really excites people?
BH: It’s like a shortcut for a shared experience. So many other things in life are “you had to be there” type personal experiences – a crummy day at work, a fun holiday, drinks with mates, etc. Whereas movies, you can be isolated in the middle of dingo-woop-woop, but if you’ve seen the same film, you immediately have an “in” with everyone else who has seen it, regardless of where or who they are. It’s quite magical when you think about it.

PB: What is your relationship like with your listeners; how involved are they in what you create?
BH: They’re less involved with the creation aspect of the episodes, but we enjoy their interaction on social media – it feels like an extension of the show almost: a way we can expand on the things covered. Personally, whenever I listen back, I tend to think of jokes I should have said, so I like the ability to tweet about them afterwards!

New episodes of Because You Watched are available on Thursdays, wherever you get your podcasts.
