]]>POD BIBLE: Who are you, what is your podcast called, and what’s it about?
NICK KENT: I’m Nick Kent, and I host the Whisky and Things podcast with my dear friend of 17 years, Dave Giles. In each episode we review and discuss the history of a different whisky, as well as share stories of ‘things’ we’ve discovered that week, or highlights from our lives in the entertainment industry. We also interview guests from all walks of media and the arts.
PB: Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?
NK: Dave and I are both professional musicians, so when the lockdown happened we had no work, and as two single guys in our 30’s with time to kill, we could either start filming make-up tutorials or start a podcast to keep busy. Neither of us have the cheekbones for the first option, so we rebooted our old 2014 whisky themed YouTube show as a podcast. True story.
PB: What’s the first podcast you ever listened to?
NK: I was actually pretty late to the podcast party and would watch the video versions rather than just listen at first. So an Australian YouTuber known as ‘Mr Sunday Movies’ has a podcast called The Weekly Planet which I was turned on to. They talk about movies and TV shows, including geeking out on Marvel movie easter eggs and trivia, which always has me hooked.
PB: Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?
NK: Joe Rogan has been a big one for me. The broad range of subject matter on that show is incredible. I can listen to a person I’ve never heard of, talk about a subject I didn’t know existed, be hooked for 3+ hours and come out the other side feeling like I’ve learnt something new. Either that or Joe just chats rubbish with his mates for the entire time which I enjoy equally as much, kinda like what Dave and I have going for us, which is comforting going forward.
PB: Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?
NK: Probably James Hetfield of the band Metallica. Not only because I’m a huge fan and the tour stories would be epic, but Metallica have recently launched their own brand of whisky so we’d be killing a few content birds with one stone – now that’s multitasking. We’d hopefully also get a free bottle, whisky’s expensive!
PB: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?
NK: Talking is harder than you think, so delegate jobs! Dave and I enjoy whisky and we’re always learning but we decided to seek the services of the actual ‘Whisky God’ to do our comprehensive tasting notes. He’s as old as time itself, has a gigantic voice and an ego to match but he knows his stuff, just don’t tell him I said that.
PB: Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?
NK: Episode 11 was a lot of fun. We tasted a Talisker 10 year old scotch which our listeners were looking forward to, and we interviewed Robbie Coles AKA Vlogger from BBC’s recent series Ranganation. A lot of great banter and I had some fun in the edit to make Dave sound silly, which is something I enjoy doing once in a while. NEVER ANNOY THE EDITOR!
PB: Where can the Pod Bible readers find out more about you?
NK: Readers can find us at www.whiskyandthings.com or they can stand outside their front door with a dram of whisky, look east, wink at the moon and the Whisky God will drop by and show them a thrilling PowerPoint presentation. Just don’t offer him the cheap whisky, you’ll hurt his feelings.
