HAVE YOU HEARD?
The Icarus Complex: Audio drama of navigating life in the UK
Have You Heard? is where the Pod Bible team meet the people behind the podcasts you may not have heard of yet…
Described as Adrian Mole meets Bridget Jones, The Icarus Complex is an audio drama that’s part comedy, and follows the lead character Liam as he navigates the treacherous waters of dating and the complexities of relationships. From the perspective of a black male trying to navigate life in the UK it also explores suppressing/dealing with emotion and the pitfalls of having too much pride. We caught up with the anonymous creator…
What was the first podcast you ever listened to?
The first podcast I ever listened to was Serial, Sarah Koenig, ‘all the way back’ in 2014. The Adnan Syed case – gripping stuff!
Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?
I started podcasting during Covid to keep myself occupied and creative but also because I wanted the book I’d written (The Icarus Complex) to be received in a different form given its’ publishing has become more and more unlikely. The podcast / audiodrama route was a different outlet and medium and has proved to be the better means of expression and way of telling this story.
Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?
I’m an avid listener to the Joe Budden Podcast and admire how long they’ve been going but also that they’ve been able to remain true to their fans and provide content for free consistently without the need for ads. I also take inspiration from Pods Like Us for flying the indie flag. This podcast keeps me grounded and reminds me that even even the smallest podcast can have the loudest voice and biggest impact – highlighting things that can sometimes go amiss.
Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?
I’d love for Jodie Comer to play a character on my podcast – she’s the best and super amazing at accents!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt so far as a podcaster?
The biggest lesson I’ve learnt is how important planning each episode can be and remaining consistent. Certainly prerecording as many as I can in advance of their release can contribute to a less chaotic and smooth post production which allows me to focus on other things.
Which episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?
If anyone had to listen to my podcast to get an idea of what it’s like. I’d recommend Season 4 – ‘Chapter 43 – The One with Malik and ‘Our House’’. Certainly one of my favourites to make.
Anything else you’d like to share with readers?
Remain consistent, plan and don’t be afraid to put content out. If it’s one person or 100 people, if you have something that you’re passionate and want to speak on, don’t be afraid to do it. Ps : Icarus Complex Podcast returns with Season 5 in the New Year!
