One of our favourite podcasts about politics and current affairs, Media Storm is a news podcast that starts with the people who are usually asked last. Hosts Mathilda Mallinson and Helena Wadia covered many stories that help better equip listeners to identify the truth, and in 2022 they won an International Women’s Podcast Award for their episode covering different perspective of transgender headlines. Now heading into the fourth series, we caught up with Mathilda and Helena to find out more about the inspiration behind the series…

It’s been said that “More than a podcast, Media Storm is a campaign” – why did you choose podcasting as the medium for these conversations?

Media Storm is an ethical news venture with the aim to execute and embody targeted editorial reform in the news sector. We set out on this aim for reform after we discovered ingrained malpractices while working together at leading national news outlets. Podcasting is the perfect medium for these conversations – you’re not bound by traditional editorial conventions, some which are so fixated on appearing “balanced”, they end up platforming fiction as much as fact. Plus, podcasting provides a much-needed balm for the fast-paced 24 hour clickbait news cycle – you can take your time to reach out to communities who may be wary of speaking to traditional media.

What do you consider when taking on a new topic?

Our core principle is to provide ‘right of reply’ to marginalised groups that are denied due representation in everyday news coverage. This means prioritising refugee voices in immigration coverage, indigenous and frontline voices in climate coverage, or people with experiences of homelessness, disability, prison, addiction, sexual assault, or racism (and so on) in social policy discussions affecting them. When taking on a new topic, we ask ourselves: who are the critical missing voices in the biggest news stories? And crucially: what expertise can they provide? Too often, “case studies” in the news are valued only for their trauma, heartstring tugs for the end of the story. But those with experience are also experts: they have knowledge of the system, knowledge of the cause, and knowledge of the impact.

Did you take inspiration from any podcasts in particular before you started?

Most current affairs podcasts take a more traditional approach to news, but we have been inspired by those taking a slower approach to stories – such as Serial, Tortoise’s The Slow Newscast, or more recently, A Bit Fruity. We’ve also been inspired by dynamic female duos, whatever the genre! 2 Dope Queens, Closet Confessions, All Killa No Filla, to name a few.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned from creating Media Storm?

Don’t give up when the going gets tough. Trying to build a podcast from the ground up without massive financial investment or celebrity fronting is not a goal with many models of success. Nor is trying to sustainably monetise ethical, non-sensationalist, source-led journalism. We are not following a well-trodden path here, and sometimes we lose the trail or struggle to see the way ahead, but we have always found a way to continue and it has always been worth it – it just takes a bit of determination and unconditional support for each another as partners. Just because the path isn’t clear, doesn’t mean there isn’t a way through. And we have learned time and again that there are enough people who value our work and share our frustrations with modern news practices to make Media Storm work in the long-term. Lessons are: trust yourself, think creatively about obstacles ahead, and never compromise on the standards of your work.

Is there one thing that excites you the most about Series 4 you can’t wait for listeners to hear?

There’s so many things it’s hard to choose! We’re excited to launch our new weekly current affairs format, digging more directly into the biggest news story of each week. We’ve got special investigative episodes coming up, the first on the 13th June about the opaqueness of rape ‘justice’ trials. We’ve got a killer guest-host, a segment that will help take listeners outside of the Western worldview on news, and plenty of speakers that will help us find the facts behind the fear-mongering. Most importantly, we’re excited to leave people after each episode with something to talk about.

Do you have any podcast recommendations for listeners to continue learning between episodes/seasons?

We would always encourage listeners to continue learning from people with lived experience! We recommend Life After Prison – hosted by Zak Addae-Kodua and Jules Rowan, who have both spent time in prison. It’s a podcast for people whose lives have been affected by the criminal justice system – but also for people who have no experience with it to learn directly from people who have! We’d also recommend Homo Sapiens: conversations, stories and a good old laugh with LGBTQ+ icons and allies, and Maintenance Phase – debunking the junk science behind health fads, wellness scams and nonsensical nutrition advice.

This is Let There Be Pod in Association with Acast. In each issue of the magazine, our partner Acast – home of the UK’s BEST podcasters – sits down for a chat with one of its creators to hear what they love about making podcasts. In this interview, from issue #018, Acast speaks to Kieran, Kwame, Steven and Yaf from the Out Of Home podcast about speaking their truth through podcasting!

How did you come up with the concept of the podcast?

Kieran: The concept of the podcast came around quite organically. Even before the mics were turned on for Episode 001, we were already having the types of conversations that are on record now. The idea was to give ourselves a platform and a space to come together and share our perspectives on different experiences we’ve had in our lives. We’re also four individuals who care a lot about community and seeing people flourish. Coming from the UK and relocating to The Netherlands there was an opportunity to bridge the gap between the cultures and so Out of Home was born -giving a little flavour for people in Amsterdam what it was like being a Londoner but on the flip-side also giving Londoners an insight to what life was like living abroad. Through sharing stories of our own but also of people who inspired us.

What are some of your favourite podcast moments so far?

Group: There’s a few moments that stick out in the period that we’ve been a collective but if we were to name a few:

  • Pivoting during lockdown to deliver In House Sessions: Covid put a stop to in-person link-ups but instead of letting that hinder our consistency, we were able to use it to our advantage. We understood that people were going to be staying in their houses, and in need of entertainment. It also meant that the people who we wanted to speak with were also going to have more time on their hands, so in this period we interviewed individuals who were crushing it in their field such as Premier League players, Olympians, fashion stylists, and DJs.
  • Winning a British Podcast Award- winning in the Bullseye category which honours excellent podcasts for under-represented audiences. This was amazing because we had no idea of what we could achieve when we started this, but to be recognised by experts in our field and to win something by us just getting together and shooting the breeze totally floored us!
  • Being flown to Barcelona back in June and playing at the world-famous Camp-Nou stadium for a football tournament. This is the stuff dreams are made of, also our football teams (Man United & Arsenal supporters here) aren’t doing the best to be honest, so to play at FC Barca before some of our beloved club players have was quite a touch!

How has Out Of Home helped you connect with your audience?

Yaf: Quite simply, stories, everyone connects with stories! We see ourselves as a community platform rather than a podcast. We don’t want people to just consume our content, we love to have two-way discussions and listen to other stories and perspectives on things that we talk about. Everything begins with a conversation, so what I find is that the discussions we have on the podcast are starting points to wider interactions with people, whether that’s doing physical events and partying with them, or having a chat in our DM’s, we see our podcast as a gateway to all of these things.

What do you love about making a podcast?

Steven: Love linking up with the mandem, connecting on a weekly basis, and the support we are able to provide each other. Also, we bring the vibes so there’s always laughter, they say laughter is the best medicine and I’ve been in great health. One other thing I love is the people that listen and give their feedback. It’s mad that we have become a staple of people’s lives. Out of Home to the world!

What have you learned from the guests who have appeared on the podcast?

Kwame: That a lot of our guests learn best when figuring it out, making mistakes, or just being inexperienced. I think a lot of times in life we are expected to have these super detailed plans and objectives, which is fine but there’s also a beauty in the process, learning by doing and sometimes learning more whilst losing.

This is Let There Be Pod in Association with Acast. In each issue of the magazine, our partner Acast – home of the UK’s BEST podcasters – sits down for a chat with one of its creators to hear what they love about making podcasts. In this interview, from issue #017, Acast speaks to Jake Cunningham and Michael Leader about their love letter to Studio Ghibli, Ghibliotheque!

Let’s kick things off – what inspired you to start a podcast?

Like star-crossed lovers, we caught each other’s eyes over the desk at work. We had podcasted about films separately, but never together, until Jake revealed that he had never seen a film from the legendary Japanese animators Studio Ghibli. Michael, one of the UK’s experts on Ghibli, leapt at the chance to become Jake’s personal lecturer on the subject and so Ghibliotheque was born.

JAKE CUNNINGHAM AND MICHAEL LEADER

What do you love about making a podcast?

The interaction, and not just with each other and with our guests, but with our listeners as well. The podcast began as a one-to-one tutorship and has expanded to include a global classroom of Ghibli nerds.

What have been some of the best moments on the podcast?

We joked when we were starting the podcast about one day making a pilgrimage to Japan to visit Studio Ghibli’s office and museum. Amazingly, we did exactly that and made a whole miniseries about it featuring interviews with Ghibli insiders and animators. We also visited locations that inspired some famous Ghibli scenes and recreated them — it’s probably the nerdiest thing we’ve ever done!

You even have a book coming out. What’s it about?

After exploring every Ghibli feature film in detail on the show, our publisher Welbeck reached out to see if we’d like to adapt our podcast into a book. Each chapter is dedicated to an individual Ghibli film, with Michael looking at the context and history behind them and Jake reviewing them. We wrote it over lockdown and are hugely excited for people to get their hands on it in September.

What have you learned from the guests who have appeared on your podcast?

When we started the show, we thought we were going to find a small but passionate group of listeners who shared our niche fascination with  Ghibli. It turns out that niche is pretty big! Having been lucky enough to have the writers and directors of some of the biggest animated films in the world on the show, we’ve learned that the inspirational power of Ghibli’s creativity is enormous — and we’re going to keep shouting about it.

What do you think your fans and listeners enjoy most about your podcast?

For a lot of audiences — us included — Studio Ghibli’s films can be an oasis in a frantic world. Even when they’re full of monsters, violence and magic, their focus on details like wind rustling through grass or a perfectly fried egg offer a sense of calm. We wanted to bring that tone to the podcast, so our conversations are always fairly gentle, meditative and welcoming, reflecting the Ghibli viewing experience in our show.

Now that I am (nearly) caught up, I thought I’d help other new listeners dive in, and share my Pod Bible Divine 5 and why they’re worth checking out.

Episode 001 Pod bible

#001 • No Such Thing As A Fish / White Wine Question Time / Birthday Girls House Party

One, two, skip a few… That’s how everyone goes through back-catalogues, right? If you are brand new to Pod Bible, I have to point you to the inaugural episode of the podcast. It dives straight in the deep end with No Such Thing As A Fish (pun fully intended). Listen to Adam and Stu chatting to Dan Schreiber about the massively successful show, as well as some great recommendations from Kate Thornton from White Wine Question Time. Plus, there’s far too much fun being had by the team from Birthday Girls House Party! Listen here >>

Episode 050 Pod bible

#050 • Distraction Pieces / Off The Beat & Track / Hardest Part Of The Ring

What’s one of the best things about applying for jobs in the podcast world? You can get to know your potential colleagues before you even send your CV! When Pod Bible Podcast turned 50 episodes young, the Pod Bible originators celebrated with chats from Pip about his Distraction Pieces Podcast, as well as a few recommendations from Stu and Ad. It’s a great chat, and a must listen if you want to feel like a true Pod Bible disciple. Listen here >>

Episode 039 Pod bible podcast back-catalogue

#039 • Have You Heard George’s Podcast / Private Parts / The Big Travel Podcast

Have you heard the Have You Heard George’s Podcast podcast? If the answer is ‘yes’, you should definitely have a listen to this episode. And I don’t just say that because I really wanted to write that sentence to confuse you. Adam’s conversation with George the Poet was one of the first ones recorded during the first COVID lockdown in March 2020. It was really interesting to hear how the lockdown isolation mirrored George’s creative process. Listen here >>

Episode 070 Pod bible podcast back-catalogue

#072 • Rule Not The Exception • The Log Books • Self Care Club

Pod Bible, both magazine and podcast, are here to give you a chance to hear from your favourite podcasters while also introducing you to people and podcasts you may not be aware of yet. This recent episode did that for me perfectly. It prompted me to finally listen to The Log Books, which had been in my queue since its British Podcast Awards success. AND then after listening to The Log Books, and loving it, I immediately subscribed to Tash’s recommendations. Listen here >>

Bonus Episode with Jordan Rizzieri and Scroobius Pip Pod bible podcast

Bonus Episode: A Message From Pod Bible

This episode is very different to the rest of the podcast back-catalogue, but it is also one of the most important. Following the death of George Floyd and subsequent centring of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, the team at Pod Bible contemplated their role and responsibility to help bring change. Pod Bible Founder, Scroobius Pip, and my predecessor, Jordan Rizzieri, had a conversation about the Pod Bible Pledge, and the importance of reaching out to underrepresented communities to spotlight their work. It’s a pledge I fully agree with. Listen here >>

The Pod Bible Podcast is the podcast podcast where podcasters talk to podcasters about podcasts and podcasting. Does it get anymore meta? The Pod Bible Podcast back-catalogue is available here on the website, on Acast, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and all good podcast outlets!

the actors from The Danger Club podcast

Dan, Scott, Ross, Colin, James and Drummond, the actors behind The Danger Club…

Who are you and what’s your podcast about?

We’re a bunch of actors from London who wanted to relive the days we spent playing Dungeons and Dragons, so we grabbed our dice, built a studio and started recording. It’s an improvised story about 5 heroes who would otherwise be lost that find each other and make one hell of a team on a quest to save the world. But it’s also a real story about six mates doing weird voices and having fun.

What was the first podcast you ever listened to?

The Ricky Gervais podcast, and the Frongpants Network back in the mid 00s. Scott Johnson was doing stuff in terms of niche shows but with professional production that was ahead of its time back then.

Why did you decide to start podcasting in the first place?

We started playing D&D after gigs in pubs around London, after a while friends started asking to come and listen, then strangers started asking too. We decided that it had an audience, and people liked hearing what we did, so here we are!

Which podcasts do you take inspiration from?

It tends to be non-gaming podcasts more than anything. In terms of style we try to be our own thing. Anything where there’s laughter and drama and there’s been some love put into making it.

Who’s your dream guest for the podcast?

We had Jessica Fostekew on the show and that was so much fun. She’s an old mate from the comedy circuit and Hoovering is one of our favourite podcasts so we’d been trying for years to get her on the DCP. It worked out great, her character had a fight with a pencil, there was an evil calzone, we had fun.

What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned so far as podcasters?

Remembering the fun of it, and persevering. It can be easy for it to feel like it’s just a job when you’ve got editing, social media, booking guests etc. But then we sit down to record and it’s just six best friends having fun telling stories and all the stress melts away. If you can hold on to that then you can do anything.

What episode would you say is the perfect introduction to your podcast?

Episode 21, Carpe DM. It’s the end of the first story arc and pure danger club fun, taking us into a very good string of episodes after. You can absolutely start from episode 1 though. It’s all one story. Also in episode 33 we fight a post office!

Where can Pod Bible readers find out more about you?

www.dangerclubpodcast.com or you can tune into our weekly livestream show at 6pm on Wednesdays on Twitch.tv/dangerclubpodcast

Did you see the recommendation for comedy podcast Daddy Look At Me in our recent Pod Bible? Not sure how to dive in to the back-catalogue?  We asked podcast hosts Rosie Jones and Helen Bauer to share their Divine 5

It takes a certain type of person to work in showbiz, and quite often they can be spotted at a young age, getting up on stage, standing in the limelight and shouting “Daddy, look at me!”. The Daddy Look At Me podcast is crammed full of these people. Each episode, famous comedy guests share their stories of childhood tantrums, traumas and blatant exhibitionism on the road to fame. Now in its fourth series, we asked hosts ‘Daddy’ Rosie and ‘Baby’ Helen to tell us pick their favourite 5 episodes for new listeners to dive into.

Rosie JOnes and Helen Bauer from Daddy Look at Me Podcast

‘Daddy’ Rosie Jones and ‘Baby’ Helen Bauer, hosts of the Daddy Look at Me Podcast

Rosie and Helen’s Divine 5:

Romesh Ranganathan (Series 3, Episode 1)

Series three got off to an absolute corker when we chatted to star of, er, EVERYTHING, Romesh Ranganathan. We love this episode, and we hope you do too. It’s very jam-sandwich heavy and Rom tells us what it was like growing up as a chubby baby boy in Crawley.

Listen to this episode now on Acast, Spotify or Apple podcasts

Jayde Adams (Series 3, Episode 3)

Jayde is one of our HEROES in comedy, and this episode from series three was such good fun. We chat about roller discoes and being a big show-off in Bristol. We love Jayde so much and you will too!

Listen to this episode on Acast, Spotify and Apple.

Ed Gamble (Series 1 Episode 3)

Ed was one of our first ever guests on the podcast and the boy did not disappoint. We loved chatting to him about what it was like to be a moody rocker, and how he became the fresh-faced comedy lad we know and love today.

Listen to this episode on Acast, Spotify or Apple podcasts.

Maisie Adam (Series 1 Episode 6)

This is also a throwback to our first season, when we interviewed one of our best friends in comedy, Mock The Week star Maisie Adam. She tells us about her less-than-successful attempt to pick up boys through the medium of dance, and her starring role in the school nativity as…the wise man’s wife.

Listen to the episode on Acast, Spotify or Apple podcasts.

Rachel Parris and Marcus Brigstocke (Series 4, Episode 1)

Married sweethearts Rachel and Marcus joined us for the first episode of season four, our latest season, and taught us that opposites DO attract. While little Rachel was learning the piano and being an all-round star student, Marcus was leading a team of little comrades across a very busy dual carriageway, and setting fire to goalposts. This is a blazing hot episode!

Listen to this episode on Acast, Spotify or Apple podcasts.

Now in its second season, Rule Not The Exception is the inclusive podcast with exclusive guests. Hosts, Sagar Radia and Amrita Acharia talk through a collection of experiences and views from friends and peers in the creative arts and beyond. We asked them to take us through their five favourite episodes.

Mandip Gill (Series 1,  Episode 2)

Mandip just brings a natural energy to any room she’s in. She doesn’t take herself too seriously, and I’m sure she can bring a smile to anyone’s face! Having worked with her on The Good Karma Hospital we already had a short-hand with Mandip, but she was great at taking that to another level when we would go off on completely random tangents! I think what made this episode great was her candid honesty and genuine laughter. Sometimes questions in interviews can feel a little formulaic and answers are a little guarded, or “planned” and for our podcast we really try to find a way into the core of a person and a relatability, which this episode is a fantastic example of. “Being yourself” is a phrase that gets bandied around left right and centre these days, but we definitely feel you get a slice of Mandip as ‘herself’ and no one else in our chat together. Listen now.

Elliot Barnes-Worrell (Series 1, Episode 7)

Elliot is the real deal. He acts. He writes. He directs. And that’s only the stuff we do know! His love for stories and attention to detail in our conversation was absolutely captivating. Elliot is an incredibly passionate person and that shone through in our chat when he delved deep about some of his early struggles getting into the entertainment industry. I think this one stuck out for us because he laid it all out in the studio. He could have chosen to shut down certain topics but chose to share honest experiences, and saw it as a responsibility to say his part. It resulted in a raw, and in places painful, but incredibly powerful talk that resonated with a lot of people. Listen now.

Moyo Akande (Series 2 Episode 3)

Moyo is literally a force of nature and despite it being lockdown she’d been so busy with creating projects that we had to pin her down for an hour in the studio! By the time series 2 was mid-way through recording, the Black Lives Matter movement had dominated the headlines, and as a black woman in the creative industry, Moyo has no qualms about speaking out and pushing the conversation to change the lack of representation not just in front of and behind the cameras, but also in the education system. Moyo has a drive and a tenacity that is infectious and this chat really unveils her intelligent, business-like, and yet hands down creative to the core attitude to carving out the career she wants for herself. Listen now.

Naroop Jhooti (Amit & Naroop) (Series 2 Episode 8)

Naroop’s drive and determination to achieve his dreams is something he’s been passionate about since the first day I met him. Not one to mince his words or apologise for his hunger for more, this chat is a brilliant insight into a no-excuses mentality, and a taste of talent meeting opportunity in creating your own luck. With no format training as a photographer his get-up-and-go attitude made for a conversation that I feel people can be inspired by in any line of work. Listen now.

Russell Tovey (Series 2, Episode 10)

Russell Tovey is a staple name in the entertainment industry and was actually a huge reason we started this podcast! Russell has an innate confidence and belief that anything is possible. From acting, to writing, also podcast hosting, Russell has shown you can be a multi-hyphenate and enhance your skillset in various fields. This was a chat we were planning for a while, so we were lucky to get him days before the second lockdown began! I think in our conversation with Russell you can learn about his love of acting, some key roles he missed out on, and how networking can open doors for you without even realising! Subscribe now to listen when this episode is released.

“If you have tinsel on the brain and mulled wine in your blood, this is the podcast for you.”

You may have noticed that it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and is there a more enticing podcast description at this time of year than this? Welcome to Bah Humbug: A Christmas Movie Podcast. I had a talk with host, Helen O’Hara, about the podcast, the importance of Christmas films and the best movie Santas of all time…

It may be fairly obvious as to what this podcast is all about, but where did the idea come from?
Helen O'Hara, from Bah Humbug podcast

Helen O’Hara, from Bah Humbug podcast

I have a horrible weakness for a terrible Christmas movie as well as the good sort, so when I sat down this year to watch the first of the new crop on Netflix (Operation Christmas Drop, god help us) I wondered if enough people were talking about them: what makes them work, what doesn’t work, and how important it is for them to be good anyway… But while I wanted to talk about the slightly rubbish ones, I also thought it was important to have something good in there too, so it wouldn’t be all irony and snark. I mean, that wouldn’t be very Christmassy. Hence the premise of the podcast: I find some dubious thematic connection between these new films and some older favourites.

It has undoubtedly been a challenging year, so how important are Christmas films? Do they really provide nostalgia and comfort or is it all a bit more cliched and bah humbug?

There is a desperate need for Christmas movies in 2020. If anything is going to get us through these last few months before Dolly Parton’s vaccine arrives, it’s going to be goodwill towards men – and these films are full of that. They’re also full of nostalgia, yes, and the comfort of stories we have heard a thousand times. But there’s also a wish fulfilment aspect this year of all years: it’s gorgeous to see people gathered together in large groups, even if we can’t do the same.

Everyone has their list, the naughty list of tawdry Christmas films, but also the premier league tier of comfort blanket films. What would Helen’s list look like?

Call me an old fuddy duddy but there’s nothing to beat It’s A Wonderful Life. Of course I love Die Hard, we all love Die Hard, but it’s not quite as Christmassy so it loses a few points there. And then all the classics: Elf, Muppet Christmas Carol, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Santa Claus: The Movie, Lethal Weapon, you name it.

There must be a secret to a good Christmas film, the right mix of comfort, warmth, community and unity, so what are the ingredients needed to make a truly wonderful festive movie? And how much do we rely on the classic prose?

I think there ultimately needs to be some sort of positive message, whether that’s one about the importance of saving your estranged wife from terrorists at Nakatomi Plaza or the huge effect that one good man’s life can have on the small town of Bedford Falls. I think the best Christmas movies celebrate what we consider best in ourselves and each other: there’s a reason that A Christmas Carol, a story all about trying to be a better person, is the most reproduced story in the whole genre.

Bah Humbug: A Christmas Movie Podcast cover artThe conversations on Bah Humbug have proved eclectic. With Helen taking the lead, guests also provided some much needed yuletide commentary.

Honestly it has been a blast so far. We discussed wartime – and peacetime – military propaganda as it relates to the silly Netflix romance Operation Christmas Drop; what each generation’s conception of Santa Claus says about the sociological health of our society; whether Pottersville looks a teensy bit more fun than Bedford Falls; and whether it’s really possible for there to be three women who look so like Vanessa Hudgens that even their husbands can’t tell the difference.

It’s a burning question and one that needs consideration – who are your favourite Santas (is there a plural for Santa?) depicted on the screen?

There have been some great movie Santas: I have a lot of time for David Huddleston in Santa Claus: The Movie, James Cosmo in The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, and of course the improbably attractive Santa played by Kurt Russell in The Christmas Chronicles. But the definitive movie Santa for me is Richard Attenborough’s version in the remake of Miracle On 34th Street. He is arguably the kindest of the bunch and certainly the most gentle. Maybe I just saw it at the right age, but I think he’s perfect. That said, I have a lot of time for Billy Bob Thornton’s Bad Santa too. Easily the funniest of the bunch.

Bah Humbug: A Christmas Movie Podcast with Helen O’Hara is produced by the good people at Stripped Media and is available on Acast and all good podcast platforms. Make sure you listen and add your own festive cheer to the proceedings.
