THE BOOK OF JOE – Recent Podcast Highlights #013
Every fortnight, guest writer Joe Ducarreaux picks out his recent podcast highlights in an effort to provide yet more wonderful content for your ears. Joe is an avid podcast listener who has been known to listen to over 40 episodes in just one week. To be honest we’re surprised he found time to write this column…
THIS WEEKS MUST LISTEN:
SIMON MAYO’S BOOKS OF THE YEAR
Simon Mayo and Matt Williams are reunited from their Radio 2 show to talk all things literature. In this fantastic series, they are joined by novelists, historians and professors to discuss the authors’ newest works. This show actually reignited my love of reading and has led to my making time to speed through books- a pastime which, as a lot of people find, I simply don’t do as much as I used to. Or as much as I do on holiday. Guests include Lee Child, Sir Michael Parkinson, Kate Atkinson and Lynda La Plante.
EPISODES WORTH A DOWNLOAD:
HARDCORE LISTING – EPISODE 132 (Parts 1&2) – TOP 5 MOVIE CONFRONTATIONS
Stu is sadly absent from this week’s offering from Distraction Pieces Network giants Hardcore Listing, but he is more than ably replaced by Chris’ cousin, Robin. The pair take a deep dive into on-screen confrontations- that is to say, not necessarily violent clashes but also incorporating tense conversations and heated threats. Highlights include Tarantino, Heath Ledger and Paddy Considine and, of course, Chris manages to bring up The Thing. Again.
EVIL GENIUS – QUEEN VICTORIA
September has been a good month for myself and Russell Kane. Having spent the evening in his company at the Southampton Mayflower Theatre, I was delighted to find the return of Evil Genius, the show where figures from history are put under the magnifying glass to determine whether they were evil or a genius. Indeed, the episode which I listened to on the way back from my honeymoon was Queen Victoria, a character who suffered great tragedy during her reign. As ever, Russell chairs the discussion deftly, allowing his guests to run with an idea before carefully steering them back to a final decision.
