POD BIBLE POLL WINNERS 2019
At the beginning of December we put together the Pod Bible Poll Winners 2019, a chance for listeners to vote for their favourite podcasts of the year within a number of categories. All nominees had featured in Pod Bible Magazine or on the Pod Bible Podcast in 2019 with the final Independent Podcast category open to all.
The polls were open for the whole of December and we were immediately blown away by the number of votes received. Our website struggled to handle the overwhelming amount of traffic at times, confirming the popularity of the nominated podcasts and how keen listeners were to support their favourites.
Voting closed at midnight on the 31st of December and all votes have now been counted and verified.
Ladies & gentlemen, we present to you, the inaugural Pod Bible Poll Winners for 2019!
INTERVIEW PODCAST
WINNER: THE ADAM BUXTON PODCAST
2nd – RICHARD HERRING’S LEICESTER SQUARE THEATRE PODCAST
3rd – DISTRACTION PIECES PODCAST WITH SCROOBIUS PIP
Dr. Buckles tops our Interview category for good reason. From his seminal podcast with regular work wife Joe Cornish on BBC 6 Music, Adam Buxton brings his best presenting skills to his show, giving insightful and considered opinions in his conversations with his guests. Boasting a back catalogue including the likes of Jeff Goldblum, Kathy Burke and basically everyone in entertainment from whom you would like to hear, Adam Buxton always provides a charming, funny and thought provoking listen.
COMEDY PODCAST
WINNER: OFF MENU
2nd – SH**GED MARRIED ANNOYED
3rd – ATHLETICO MINCE
By far the best podcast featuring a genie and a magic restaurant, Ed Gamble and James Acaster’s Off Menu Podcast is our very worthy winner for Best Comedy. The guests are invited to the chaps’ restaurant where they are asked for their ideal meal. Their food can be from any place and any time, from fancy eateries to Nan’s Sunday Lunch, no order is too tall for the resident genie waiter, James. The show is absolutely hilarious, particularly when the guest orders something which is contrary to James or Ed’s philosophy of good food. A well- deserved win for a fantastic podcast.
LIFESTYLE & CULTURE PODCAST
WINNER: THE GUILTY FEMINIST
2nd – STANDARD ISSUE
3rd – THE HIGH LOW
Deborah Frances-White oversaw another phenomenal year for The Guilty Feminist in 2019 with sell out live shows at podcast festivals, the Royal Albert Hall and many other venues. In each episode Deborah and her guests discuss topics ‘all 21st century feminists agree on’ whilst confessing their insecurities, hypocrisies and fears that underlie their principles. Guests have included Sara Pascoe, Susan Wokoma, Jo Brand and Sarah Millican and there are no signs of slowing down in 2020 as Deborah embarks on a US and Antipodean tour in the coming months.
FILM & TV PODCAST
WINNER: KERMODE & MAYO’S FILM REVIEW
2nd – FILMS TO BE BURIED WITH
3rd – THE TWO SHOT PODCAST
The BBC’s flagship film show is a worthy winner of the Pod Bible poll, given that the show began in the 90s! Mark and Simon bring critical analysis, insightful interviews with filmmakers and a LOT of bickering. With features such as the UK Box Office Top 10 (generally starting at around 34), DVD of the Week and TV Movie of the Week (So Bad, It’s Bad), Kermode and Mayo regularly achieve a high position in the podcast charts, proving them to be one of the most trusted film shows around.
MUSIC PODCAST
WINNER: THE HORNE SECTION PODCAST
2nd – HIP HOP SAVED MY LIFE
3rd – BLOOD ON THE TRACKS
Alex Horne leads his fellow band members through brilliant musical games, songs and other mischief. With each episode, The Horne Section prove themselves to be exceptionally talented musicians as well as top class comics. Joining Alex and co. on each episode is a wonderful guest, who joins in with games and occasionally offers up their very own musical talents. Each episode is an absolute joy and manages to blend music with comedy amazingly.
SOCIAL CONSCIENCE PODCAST
WINNER: GRIEFCAST
2nd – YOU, ME & THE BIG C
3rd – KATIE PIPER’S EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE
We don’t talk about death enough. Thankfully, Cariad Lloyd is tackling this with Griefcast! Guests are invited on and encouraged to discuss their experiences with death, dealing with loss and coping with grief. There are wonderful, bittersweet stories of people being present at the moment of the death of a loved one and experiences of dealing with the aftermath, both existential and mundane (e.g. trying to find passwords to various accounts!). Genuinely moving when necessary but also light and funny, Cariad strikes a brilliant balance with her show.
SPORT & LEISURE PODCAST
WINNER: THAT PETER CROUCH PODCAST
2nd – FOOTBALL RAMBLE DAILY
3rd – WRESTLE ME
Ex professional footballer Peter Crouch joins Tom Fordyce and Chris Stark to present their guide on how to be a professional footballer with insight into dressing rooms, transfers, where to sit on the team bus and much more. The behind the curtain revelations along with Crouch’s infectious sense of humour have made this podcast a huge success and rightly so. The question is, will Crouchy bring out the robot dance to celebrate his win?
OH. MY. POD. INDEPENDENT PODCAST
WINNER: ECONOMICS IN TEN
2nd – I AM THE EGGPOD
3rd – REGULAR FEATURES
In this category we opened up the polls for listeners to submit any independent or amateur podcast they felt deserved recognition. It was incredible to see the huge range of submissions from a variety of genres. There’s no doubt that the fanbases of the smaller podcasts are as fanatic as you’d expect! Our first ever Oh.My.Pod. winner is Economics In Ten, your go-to podcast if you want to learn about the lives, times and ideas of the world’s greatest economic thinkers. Each episode features ten different questions used to learn about a famous economist.
