]]>AZ: I love the authenticity of them, the best podcasts for me are when you feel like you’re genuinely listening in to a conversation between friends, almost eavesdropping as opposed to being spoken to directly by the hosts. When you get the feel that a podcast has been overly edited for me it loses that naturalism that I think the very best podcasts have. Also, there’s no other medium that allows such a wealth of information to be dispensed to the listener in such an entertaining fashion. The fact that podcasts are these longform chats between people who know their subject matter inside out for the most part, makes them incredibly
Is it bad that it was one of my own!? I mean, this was years ago, and it wasn’t even called a podcast despite being exactly that. It had the snappy title of Mars Planets MySpace Radio. That should give you an idea of how old it is seeing as Mars Planets don’t exist anymore. Neither does MySpace really. I hosted a podcast with a different MySpace user each week and we played out the best tracks from unsigned bands on MySpace. Anyway, I listened to that in around 2006 which I think factually makes it the first.
I love Wrestle Me, the podcast hosted by Marc Haynes and Pete Donaldson. I’m not even a massive wrestling fan but the two of them together are brilliant and I find the journey through the history of all the Wrestlemanias and Marc’s knowledge of the sport ridiculously entertaining.
As a writer I find John August and Craig Mazin’s Scriptnotes a really useful podcast. They offer some great analysis of different genres of film and TV as well as giving their insight into the industry itself. So yeah, I’d say that’s probably educated me the most, especially when I started writing. Also, I don’t think anyone knows as much about Bond as John Rain on SmershPod, so in terms of an education in 007, that show is a must.
I really enjoy Friends With Friends, where Dave Cribb and Pete Allison are going through and analysing every Friends episode is great fun. Also, the eternally affable Tom Price does My Mate Bought A Toaster, where he interviews guests based on their Amazon purchase history is a lovely listen.

]]>The post STUDIOCANAL Presents – The Podcast: Dive into the renowned film library appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>The idea was being talked about for a little while before it actually happened. STUDIOCANAL has, from issue one, been incredibly supportive of my Film Stories project, from the podcast to the print magazine. Over time, the conversation began about an official STUDIOCANAL podcast, to go through this incredible library of films – just as Film Stories’ own podcast was enjoying lots of success.
Following long and very fun conversations with the STUDIOCANAL team, myself and Jane Long – the show’s brilliant producer – got the greenlight, and it’s gone from there.
Many. The less obvious ones are the films I personally wouldn’t have discovered, so deep in research I found new movies I really liked. On the podcast itself, Ken Loach taking the mickey out of my Midlands accent was something I didn’t ever anticipate happening in my lifetime, nor discussing Asim Chaudhry’s burner account!
But it’s the range of guests really that have helped lift it so much. Lots of interesting people, most of whom I’d never otherwise be able to meet.
Well, Kevin Costner is always my go-to, but he hasn’t made any STUDIOCANAL films (yet!). Steve Martin would be a joy, though, as would Guillermo del Toro, Celine Song, Jessie Buckley, James Cameron, and Paddington Bear.
Oh, Cliffhanger. They veto me every time! Our production meetings are quite something. I’m still thrilled I got Santa Claus: The Movie through!
No. We’re careful to flag up spoilers, although we’re also conscious that sometimes, given the films we’re talking about, it’s hard to avoid chatting about the ending. But I’d still say no you don’t, but inevitably, you’ll get even more out of the show if you have.
It enriches it. Jane Long won’t like me for saying this, but she’s a brilliant producer and editor, and works really hard to make it sound sleek and professional. I mean, it’s what she’s great at, as anyone who listened to her work on the BBC’s Screenshot knows. But the level has from the outset been high, and the clips are very much a part of that.

]]>The post THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO… Kermode & Mayo appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>Simon Mayo: Well, it’s everything and nothing really. On the one hand, it’s the same because we are still just chatting about films, life, getting distracted by avocados and elementary physics etc, but delivering a number of pods a week has obviously modernised what we do, breaking it down into more digestible chunks. So hopefully the heritage listeners feel well served, and the new listeners feel fabulously welcome.
Mark Kermode: We also have a new studio with a new neon sign – which obviously you can’t see when you’re listening to the podcast. But take my word for it, it’s there. And it makes a huge difference to the listening experience. HUGE.
MK: Wherever we go, and whatever we do, there’s no getting away from the fact that this show is essentially me and Simon sitting in a room, talking to each other about movies (and now ‘cinema-adjacent’ TV) with occasional bickering and a huge amount of input from the listeners. That’s it – that’s the show. So it’s not just that ‘it ain’t broke’, it’s more that ‘it is what it is’. You can take or leave it, but you can’t really change it.
SM: I don’t do “completely different”.
SM: Was this question inserted and written by the production team? Sure sounds like it. No one normal asks that question! However, the answer is yes. Continuity in an upheaval is a good thing and this team has worked with us since forever. The heritage of the program is very important and so understanding that is absolutely essential in crafting the next steps.
MK: Well obviously it’s a huge relief to the listeners that we are still subject to the whims of the Redactor in Chief, meaning that there’s someone reining in all the nonsense. From our point of view, it’s very reassuring to have the same production team because we know that they understand the show, and they get what works about it. Also it means that we can keep using running jokes that are way past their tell-by date, so that’s a bonus.
SM: We didn’t even know it was happening. Someone just said it was being turned into a podcast and we said ok. Whatever that is, it sounds like a good idea. So yes, we were early adopters even if we had no idea what we were doing.
MK: Extremely easy, not least because we’ve been doing the show as a podcast for years. In fact, one of the reasons we moved to Sony was because both Simon and I were aware that if someone said something nice to us about the show it was always ‘love the podcast’ as opposed to ‘love the broadcast’. It began life as a radio show but it’s been gradually mutating into a podcast that happened to be broadcast for many years. Also, it feels really liberating not to have to break for news and sport, which would always take priority on the radio, as indeed they should.
SM: Having very clearly defined roles is helpful. There is only one critic and only one host. My main job is to ask the questions you at home are asking. It’s a choric role, akin to the ancient Greek Chorus explaining what on earth is happening to the audience. So, when Mark is being incomprehensible, I have to step in. That is my job, to interrupt on behalf of the nation.
MK: Simon is the best broadcaster in the world and so from my point of view it’s been a simple matter of shackling my wagon to his star and refusing to let go. To me he’s more than just a friend and colleague; he’s a pension plan.
MK: Pod Save America is my favourite podcast. It has seen me through the grotesque insanity of the Trump years, and it continues to be the best, most accessible, and most entertaining explanation of US politics. It’s addictive and I would advise everyone to subscribe.
SM: Other podcasts? Really? OK well I like The Rest Is History with Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook, Unholy with Jonathan Freedland and Yonit Levy and Get Onto My Cloud, Tim Rice’s podcast.

]]>The post POD BIBLE LISTENER POLLS 2023 – WINNERS ANNOUNCED! appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>Before we worry about any of that however, it’s time to look back and celebrate our favourite podcasts from 2023. As is our tradition, we ended the year with the Pod Bible Listener Polls, a month long open vote where we ask listeners to vote for their favourite podcasts of the year. All of the nominees featured in the Pod Bible Magazine, on the Pod Bible Podcast, on the website or newsletter over the last twelve months – except the final Independent Podcast category, which was open to all.
The polls were open for the whole of December and closed at midnight on the 31st of December. Thank you so much to everyone who voted, we received a record number of submissions, up 30% on our previous best which is huge! Our team have now counted and verified all submissions and we’re very happy to see a good mix of classic podcasts, indy shows and new productions as well as a bunch of brand new winners and an unprecedented tie for third place in one of the categories…
Pod disciples, we present to you your Pod Bible Listener Poll Winners for 2023!

2nd – FRENCH AND SAUNDERS: TITTING ABOUT
3rd – OFF MENU
Congratulations to Kathy Burke and the amazing team at Sony Music and Somethin’ Else for creating a runaway hit last year. Where There’s A Will There’s A Wake has taken the most morbid of subjects and turned it into a deeply entertaining and thought provoking listen, with an incredible line up of guests. Everyone knew Kathy would make the perfect podcast host when the time was right and boy has she delivered.
Kathy’s long term British comedy peers French & Saunders come second with perennial winners Off Menu dropping down to third place in what’s been yet another huge year for the dream restaurant based show.
2nd – OFF AIR… WITH JANE & FI
3rd – CHANGES WITH ANNIE MACMANUS
What else can be said about The Adam Buxton Podcast and it’s place within the UK podcasting scene since it’s inception in 2015? The quintessential interview podcast for us and the listener votes have yet again backed us up. The fact that Adam can go on lengthy hiatus’s then reappear with no warning with another run of wonderous conversations makes it feel all the more special.
Legendary broadcasters (and fellow former Pod Bible cover stars) Jane Garvey and Fi Glover take second place with DJ Annie Macmanus making the podium in third.

2nd – CLOSET CONFESSIONS
3rd – WHERE ARE YOU GOING? / POP OFF
We’re delighted to see Talk Art take the gold in this year’s Lifestyle & Culture category! Robert and Russell have been long term supporters of Pod Bible and it’s been a joy to witness their show going from strength to strength over recent years.
Pod Bible cover stars Closet Confessions take second and for the first time ever we have a tie for third place (quite the feat considering we had thousands of votes in this category!). Where Are You Going? and Pop Off share third place, two very different shows that are equally worth your time.
2nd – THE DREAM FACTORY
3rd – STICKY BUN BOYS
Three brand new entries onto the Film & TV podium this year, which is no mean feat in a category with both Kermode & Mayo and Films To Be Buried With! Congratulations to Shrink The Box, the show where Ben Baily Smith and Sasha Bates take their favourite fictional characters and analyse why their behaviour causes them so much drama.
It’s wonderful to see that both second and third places are taken by two independent shows this year. User generated movie creation podcast The Dream Factory takes second with Great British Bake Off re-watch podcast Sticky Bun Boys in third.

2nd – BEFORE THEY KNEW BETTER
3rd – ROCKONTEURS
Huge congratulations to That’s Not Metal, a truly independent and fan made podcast that has taken first place in this year’s music category! TNM brings you news, opinions and honest reviews from the world of Metal music every week and finished 2023 with their very own awards show.
DIY Magazine’s Before They Knew Better takes second with last year’s bronze medal winners Rockonteurs returning to third place again!

The Tennis Podcast takes second place with stalwarts the Football Ramble in third.

2nd – THE NEWS AGENTS
3rd – A VERY BRITISH CULT
A wonderful debut year for Pod Save The UK is capped off by topping the polls for News & Investigation. Nish Kumar and Coco Khan’s weekly politics show is funny, informative and most importantly, accessible.
Similar in subject matter, The News Agents comes in at second with BBC Radio 4 investigative series A Very British Cult taking third place.

2nd – THE WITCH FARM
3rd – SPRINGLEAF
Sherlock & Co flew onto the scene in October last year and immediately topped the Audio Fiction charts with it’s superbly written scripts and hilarious performances. Our chat with Sherlock & Watson resulted in one of our favourite interviews of the year so we are delighted to see them pick up first place.
Second place goes to the BBC’s The Witch Farm with James Acaster’s Springleaf, only released in November, taking third.

2nd – ECONOMICS IN TEN
3rd – 101 PART TIME JOBS
After finishing second last year, true crime podcast Picture The Scene have come back strong to take first place and let us tell you, they got a LOT of votes.
Ever present Economics in Ten take second place with new entrant 101 Part Time Jobs taking the bronze!
Congratulations to all our winners, runners up and nominees and thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for their favourite shows. We’re sure 2024 will be another incredible year for podcasting and look forward to celebrating it with another set of Pod Bible Listener Polls at the end of the year!

]]>The post 11 GREAT book presents for podcasts lovers appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>Whilst you could get them some equipment – microphones or headphones – but you always run the risk of getting the wrong one. So my suggestion is to follow the lovely Icelandic tradition, and give them a podcast-related book. There are loads of books based on podcasts or by podcasters, and the best thing is – they are super simple to wrap too!
So if you’re after books based on podcasts, here are eleven of the best.
The husband and wife have been chatting about almost everything on their chart-topping podcast for nearly five years now, and they’ve committed their conversations to paper too. Sh**ged. Married. Annoyed by Chris & Rosie Ramsey goes through “the ups and downs and ins and outs of love, sex and relationships”. Author Daisy May Cooper said she “Laughed ’til I cried reading this. An absolute triumph!”. Find out more >>
Released earlier this year, The Rest Is History is a great addition to the podcast from historians Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook. It gives you a whistle-stop tour through the past by answering questions such as ‘did the Trojan War actually happen?’ and ‘how did a hair appointment almost blow Churchill’s cover?’. This is also a great present for history fans! Find out more >>
Steven Barlett’s podcast is consistently one of the most popular podcasts in the UK, so when he released his companion book earlier this year it was big news. The Diary of a CEO: The 33 Laws of Business, Marketing and Life is partly based on interviews from his show, and promises to teach the reader principles ‘rooted in psychology and behavioral science’ that can apply to any industry. Find out more >>
The host of Cuddle Club is a regular face on television and a regular voice on podcasts, but this step into literature is a new medium for her. And it’s worth saying that What’s That Lady Doing? shows a new side of Lou in an incredibly sincere memoir. As one review said “A memoir with this much rape and alcoholism in it has absolutely no business being so funny. But it is fucking hilarious.” Find out more >>
Lotte Jeffs and Stu Oakley broke new audio-ground with their first podcast, Some Families, which talked about the logistics of LGBTQ+ parenting. Their book The Queer Parent: Everything You Need to Know From Gay to Ze breaks literary ground as the first LGBTQ+ parenting book to ever be published by a major author. As the writers said to us earlier this year “Isn’t that insane?”. Find out more >>
Chinny Ukata and Astrid Madimba educate and entertain listeners about the history of Africa with their podcast It’s A Continent. The book follows in its footsteps, appreciating the identity of each nation and exploring key historical moments that have shaped the continent, in an easily digestible, satirical (and shady) format. I was super excited to see the mention of Pod Bible in the bio at the start because we featured the podcast as a great women’s history podcast way back in 2021! Find out more >>
Serial is often credited with starting the first podcast boom – it has won every major award for broadcasting, including the first-ever Peabody awarded to a podcast. The epitome of the true crime genre, it is steeped in its own controversy. Rabia Chaudry’s book delves into the case on a much wider level, offers new content and evidence, and questions aspects that were only touched on – or not even reported – in the podcast. Find out more >>
Another hugely popular podcast, there are twelve whole seasons of How To Fail to catch up on. Elizabeth Day has spoken to hundreds of people about their failures and what it taught them. The book shines the light more on the author and is described as ‘part memoir, part manifesto’. This is a great one to give someone so they can start their new year on a positive – or learn to embrace the negative. Find out more >>
Whilst the Welcome To Night Vale podcast is in the style of a radio show, the book is a more traditional narrative. There are three book tie-ins to the series, and in this first, nineteen-year-old pawn shop owner Jackie Fierro is determined to uncover the mystery of “King City”. Other books in the series are It Devours! and The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home. Find out more >>
Empire magazine’s ‘geek queen’, Helen O’Hara, explores women’s roles – both in front of and behind the camera – since the birth of Hollywood, how those roles are reflected within wider society and what we can do to level the playing field. The podcast and book were released as a joint venture and therefore feed into each other really well. This book ticks the boxes for anyone who likes cinema, podcasts or books. Find out more >>
One of our regular writers, Rosie has done the full circle from writing her book, to making her podcast, and back to writing books. The Breakup Monologues is the book that came out of her podcast of the same name, and Rosie explore the psychology of love and heartbreak by drawing on her own and others’ experiences. You can read more about the journey in our interview with her. Find out more >>

]]>The post Top podcast guest appearances – Lou Sanders appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>Lou Sanders is a recognisable face on our TVs, often stealing the show. Seemingly out of nowhere she put in side splitting appearances on Hypothetical, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and, of course, Taskmaster. But to those in the podcast world it wasn’t out of nowhere, because she has been tearing it up as a guest on a wide range of podcasts for years now!
Lou’s unique takes on subjects have been what made her stand out on TV and they’re exactly what makes her a consistently hilarious and rarely repetitive podcast guest. Here’s some of our favourite episodes…
DRUNK WOMEN SOLVING CRIME
15: The Mother of All Criminals and Stolen Bermuda Shorts // Nov 2018
DWSC has been one of the blow up successes of podcasting, and, as luck would have it, two of Lou’s favourite things are drunk women and solving crime! The perfect guest, right? Not quite. She’s now sober. But fear not, as that doesn’t hinder her ability to approach the crimes in question from the strangest of angles. It makes no sense that she’s the only sober person. Listen now >>
UNEXPECTED FLUIDS
E4 S2: Sex tech Fails //Sep 2019
Taking your podcast live can throw up all sorts of issues but going live with a podcast about sexual mishaps and mistakes presents its own set of… unique hurdles. So who better for the London Podcast Festival appearance of Unexpected Fluids than the often uncomfortably comfortable Sanders! Lou gleefully shares tales of Tinder terrors, fiancé foibles and so much more… Listen now >>
BIRTHDAY GIRLS’ HOUSE PARTY
New Year’s Eve // Dec 2018
The birthday girls bring party after party to the podcast world… but you don’t bring out a party pro like Lou Sanders for just any do. No, no no. You save Lou for THE NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY! Resolutions, choosing who to kiss at midnight and international New Year’s traditions all combine to make it a Birthday Girls’ House Party you really don’t want to miss. Listen now >>
FLIMS TO BE BURIED WITH
Christmas Special // 2018
After interrupting many episodes while living with host Brett at the Edinburgh Fringe, listeners were eagerly awaiting Lou’s full appearance on Films To Be Buried With. Sadly, things didn’t go quite to plan. As something of a precursor to her own podcast, instead of “first film you saw?” or “scariest/funniest film”, Lou proceeded to change the questions to “first cuddle you saw?” and so on. Ridiculous, but an unexpectedly tender and bloody lovely. Listen now >>
THE COMEDIAN’S COMEDIAN
110 // Feb 2015
Recorded three years before the episodes above, Lou’s chat with Stuart Goldsmith on The Comedian’s Comedian finds her in a much more calm and reflective mood as she discusses her career to date. Although there are sneak peaks of Lou’s performing persona, the majority of the podcast shows a side that we perhaps hadn’t heard before and allows us to learn about her journey as a comedian. ]]>The post The best 5 episodes of Die Hard on a Blank! appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>In each episode, Philip and his co-host Liam Billingham analyse a different action film that has some kind of connection to Die Hard – be it through premise, personnel or otherwise. Some of these movies involve classic ‘Die Hard on a blank’ scenarios, like the boarding-school based Toy Soldiers, the U.S. Battleship-based Under Siege and plane-based Passenger 57. But others have more subtle and surprising connections to the original 1988 classic, such as Road House, Ricochet and Harrison Ford thriller The Fugitive.
An LA-based podcast, Die Hard on a Blank is produced by Sugar23 and Michael Sugar (the Oscar-winning producer of 2016’s Spotlight) and it’s already attracting some stellar guests. We talked to Philip when the podcast first launched, but now that the show is really gathering steam, we asked him to reflect on his favourite episodes so far…
We kicked off the show with a two-part double-header on the daddy of the genre: Die Hard. First, we talked through the entire movie scene by scene, discussing moments, creative choices and characters that we love. In the second part we talked about the origins of the film, which was based on a terrific novel called Nothing Lasts Forever and was influenced by earlier movies such as The Taking of Pelham 123, The Towering Inferno and First Blood. I’d only met Liam twice before recording the episode (and never in person) but we just clicked instantly, so I love this ep on a personal level because it also captured the beginning of our friendship.
It’s Die Hard in a Bond movie! I took my research for this episode very seriously because I know how much James Bond means to people, especially in the UK, where 007 is arguably our greatest pop-cultural export. The links to Die Hard might not be immediately obvious, but they are there, and it was also a really fun experience for me and Liam to unpack this film, and its context within the wider Bond canon, from our differing cultural perspectives (I’m British, Liam’s American). Liam grew up on Sean Connery, whereas I was weaned on Roger Moore, but we both love what Timothy Dalton did with the role. Although it’s not necessarily “the best”, this is actually my favourite Bond movie!
It’s Die Hard in an LA noir! This is one of the episodes I’m most proud of, and it was also the most vulnerable for me, because the director of the film – the late, great Tony Scott – is one of my biggest heroes, so I got a little emotional talking about him. It led to a wide-ranging, deep dive discussion that encompassed film noir, American distraction and the dark history of Los Angeles. We also talked about (gridiron) football, as I’m obsessed with the NFL, so much so that Kyle Brandt (the effervescent host of ‘Good Morning Football’ on the NFL Network) will be guesting on the pod for our Hard Target episode (out August 2nd). In my first interview with you guys, I said that Kyle would be my dream guest for the show, so to get him was an incredible coup!
It’s Die Hard in a hospital! We were so excited to talk about this incredible movie that we went into a state of hyperactive mania! I absolutely love John Woo and Chow Yun-fat and I just cannot get over how astonishing this movie is to watch. For me, Hard Boiled is like this magnificent, exotic, phantasmagoric vision that was beamed to us from another world – it’s exuberant action cinema at its absolute zenith. By this point we were pretty dialed in to our format, that also includes the ‘Die Hard Oscars’ (with categories such as The Dick Thornberg award for ‘Dick of the Movie’) and our ‘Double Jeopardy’ trivia quiz. We were just having a blast.
It’s Die Hard on a mountain! This was a particularly cool episode as we were joined by Jamelle Bouie, a brilliant and highly influential opinion writer for The New York Times. Jamelle also co-hosts a fantastic podcast called Unclear and Present Danger, where he analyses the action movies of the 1990s through a political lens, and he’s just an incredibly smart, yet completely unpretentious, person. Cliffhanger is one of the more obvious ‘Die Hard on blank’ films, in that it directly replicates the classic ‘Die Hard formula’ (i.e. ‘bad guys take over a blank and it’s up to one person to fight back’) in a different setting, but that setting is a really interesting and unusual one here. We also talked about Sylvester Stallone, Michael Rooker, John Lithgow and the director Renny Harlin, whose background in horror may have influenced this surprisingly gory movie!

]]>The post Izzy Stevens talks Indie Spunk and championing filmmakers through podcasts appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>IZZY: To be entirely honest, making this podcast was a selfish move on my part. I love to interview and champion the creatives I know & respect, and I dig any excuse to learn from a filmmaker who’s done it their way. But I ultimately followed through because, about a year ago, I realized that I was having similar conversations with many of the wonderful emerging filmmakers I coached and consulted with inside of indie spunk club – my membership platform for filmmakers.
These are directors, producers, writers and actors who are inspired to build an empowered, fulfilling career in the film industry, on their own terms, but just need some kind of blueprint or roadmap to get there. I am a director myself, who’s inspired to build this kind of a career.
I’ve always known I wanted to bring these conversations into a podcast format. I’m excited it’s finally here. My intention is to open up access to film industry insight and dissect how to strategically build a career using your individual creative voice.
Born in Australia and now an honorary American, Izzy has starred in notable series such as Puberty Blues and Underbelly, and many will have seen her in the 2018 sci-fi movie Occupation – she began her career in the entertainment world from an early age and knew exactly the path that she wanted to take.
I started professionally acting at 17 in TV and film, which exposed me to a world of filmmaking that I instantly fell in love with. I wanted to direct. I wanted to learn all of the roles on set. As well as directing, I fancy editing, production design, sound design, producing, and writing. The whole process. It’s an endless rush to collaborate with a team towards a shared creative vision. I intend on making films my whole life, I just love it!
During the pandemic and over the past few years, I’ve built a production company and coaching practice helping upwards of 60 filmmakers go from script to screen, which has taught me a whole lotta delicious wisdom juice about my own career. So came the podcast.
The podcast clearly wants to help emerging filmmakers, why is this so important to Izzy?
When I started out I really wished I had access to mentorship and guidance. Navigating this industry alone can be tough and confusing. There is also so much more I want to learn, and I figured that we can seek these answers together. I love supporting emerging filmmakers because they’re, in my mind, some of the best people I’ve met. Ideas driven, curious, playful, motivated and kind.
I believe the world becomes a more empathetic, cooler place when filmmakers from all walks of life get their stories seen and heard and experienced by an audience. Not just the dominant voices.
Filmmakers are inherently collaborative and want to network, and there is plenty of peer to peer help in the higher levels of the industry, the problem is we need more diversity in those higher level industry roles who will take bets on newer voices.
And Izzy knows that we need diversity in the industry to get new and exciting stories, she’s clear about this…
Hire women, hire queer folks, hire people of color — when our sets are equitable, the stories get better. It’s science proven. You can’t argue with science.
The Indie Spunk podcast has an array of eclectic episodes ranging from interviews with a mentoring tone, to out and out industry advice and guidance. What more can we expect as the episodes roll out?
Much more! So far we’ve had directors, writers, producers and special guests join us on the podcast who’ve worked with Sundance, created festivals such as HollyShorts, written for The Simpsons, and made award-winning films. But it’s only the beginning. I am giddy about what’s to come. We also run filmmaking workshops and events inside indie spunk club.
The podcast is all about you taking action. The best place to start is to surround yourself with a like-minded community, get busy creating from a place of curiosity, and seek guidance. You can listen to the podcast here where we get into it all.
It’s clear Izzy displays an unyielding passion for the arts and film, and the Indie Spunk podcast is part of a much wider project and conversation.
Indie Spunk podcast is an offshoot to my mentorship programs & production company, Indie Spunk, and I see it all continuing to grow as we support more filmmakers and make more films. As a director, I currently have a feature film in development, and I’m in production on a number of short films as a director and producer.

]]>The post Damian Kerlin talks LGBTQ+ filmmaking on the Iris podcast appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>Iris is talking about all things queer film this Pride month, championing the incredible creatives both on and off-screen. Over the series, Damian catches up and speaks with filmmakers covering aspects such as authentic casting and representation on screen, the portrayal of queer youth and the dramatising of true queer stories.
We asked Damian some questions about his latest podcast project…

Yes, absolutely. Podcasts allow for much deeper conversations, which other traditional forms of journalism don’t. In Iris’s case it was a real opportunity to hear from those working behind the scenes in film and the work that goes into it.
I love film and a big part of my work is amplifying the voices of the LGBTQ+ community and celebrating our culture, so it was a no brainer really! I also found it really interesting that the focus was those working behind the scenes. Often when we think of film we think of those on screen, the actors. This delves deeper and looks at the purpose and motive behind the film and the process which lead to it being developed. It was also an opportunity to discuss and hear from different perspectives of the LGBTQ+ community. For instance, in Episode 1 we discuss the old age question ‘should queer characters be played by queer actors?’ and often when we see this in the press it is told through a straight lens and blown up out of proportion. We set the record straight!
The Iris Prize is the world’s largest short film prize and the October festival in Cardiff (this will be the 17th) continues to be one of Europe’s friendliest gatherings of people who love watching movies. The Iris Prize Podcast, now in its 3rd year, is a great way for the festival to tap into the filmmakers, who we consider family, to share ideas and support the next generation of filmmakers. It’s insightful hearing from the different perspectives of those working in the film industry making queer film, but it’s also really educational. The work that goes into making these films is no mean feat.
I am documentary obsessed, so Episode 2 was a biggie for me. We chatted to two documentary makers and the young audiences commissioner from S4C, and really honed in on the process and whether documentaries should have fair representation or can they have a skewed bias. This was particularly topical as we recorded the episode just as Channel 4 announced their documentary Gender Wars with Kathleen Stock.
Episode 4 also focuses on Queer Youth and guess what listeners, we actually spoke to queer young people to find out how they felt about how they are represented on screen. Not adults, telling us how they should be portrayed but actual young people. It’s a good ‘un.
OMG where do I even start, there are so many good ones, can I say two? There is Gender Reveal, which is so insightful and Queer Roots and Routes, which is made by collective We Are Queer, and is queer storytelling at its best!

]]>The post And the award goes to… Clash of the Titles appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>Clash compares the Oscar winners – and sometimes losers – of years gone past, reminiscing on the cinematic greats, whilst keeping an eye on the current film circulation. Celebrating this awards season, we asked the trio what they thought of this year’s cinema awards season.
Alex: Loved Elvis! So many awards season films are quite slow and in 2023’s social media – infused world of NEEDING CONSTANTLY CHANGING STIMULI, Baz Luhrmann’s frenetic pace to his movies kept me suitably engaged. Also it’s a very good film.
Vicky: Jamie Lee Curtis – when will we finally start believing women when they tell us there’s a murderer in the house, AND when will one receive an Oscar for being awesome in Everything Everywhere All At Once? Oh right, now!
Chris: Big fan of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio. Making fascism’s rise the backdrop and sticking Mussolini in a kid’s movie was brave, but somehow, it works.
C: The Godfather. Or The Godfather Part II. It’s so hard to choose between them, which made that week particularly tough.
A: Silence of the Lambs. Upon discovering Sean Connery had been close to playing Hannibal Lecter it gave me the opportunity to roll out my appalling Connery impression to deliver Lecter’s lines. So, entirely selfishly, that.
V: I am still very much affected (shocked, traumatised, jealous) by Whiplash; the structure is ludicrously tight, the characters are knotty AF and if anyone clenches a fist near me or looks even slightly disappointed, I am a wreck because of this film.
A: I’d have liked to have seen Colin Farrell win big for The Banshees of Inisherin. His relationship with Daisy the donkey is one of the most beautiful and heart-breaking that I’ve seen in a long time. Maybe as the owner of the world’s biggest whippet (almost donkey
sized) I can relate to his unbridled love for that animal.
V: Colin Farrell for Banshees in Inisherin, but mostly because he took his son as his guest and I would love to do that. Oscars + a party + free babysitting by A-listers, correct?
C: I loved The Banshees of Inisherin, especially the script and Colin Farrell’s performance. So while it was honoured elsewhere, I was disappointed it got shut out at the Oscars.

]]>The post POD BIBLE POLL WINNERS 2022 – WINNERS ANNOUNCED! appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>This was the fourth annual Pod Bible Polls, where we ask listeners to vote for their favourite podcasts of the year. All of the nominees featured in the Pod Bible Magazine, on the Pod Bible Podcast, on the website or newsletter over the last twelve months – except the final Independent Podcast category, which was open to all.
2022 also saw a slight change in the categories – we’re celebrating fiction podcasts for the first time in the ‘Audio Drama’ category, and a ‘News & Investigation’ poll highlights some of the big productions that came out of the UK last year.
The polls were open for the whole of December and closed at midnight on the 31st of December. Once again we received a record number of votes, but our team have now counted and verified them. We’re happy to see there’s a good mix of classic podcasts, indy shows and new productions amongst the winners and runners-up.
Pod disciples, these are your Pod Bible Poll Winners for 2022!
2nd – MY THERAPIST GHOSTED ME
3rd – HELP I SEXTED MY BOSS
After being pipped to the post last year, the Off Menu lads are back to prove they are the kings of the comedy podcast genre! Ed Gamble and James Acaster’s chats with celebrities about their dream menus continues to make us laugh and salivate in equal measure. It has been a massive year for Off Menu, with more merch and live shows – including their first trip over the Atlantic. So it’s no surprise their fanbase has grown and once again rallied behind them to make it to the number one spot.
My Therapist Ghosted Me and Help I Sexted My Boss have come in the second and third slots. Clearly listeners are still craving good chat between good friends!
2nd – THE DIARY OF A CEO
3rd – HAPPY PLACE WITH FEARNE COTTON
Another return for a previous Pod Bible Polls winner, this marks the third win for The Adam Buxton Podcast. The podcast recently celebrated it’s 200th episode with old friend and regular podcast guest, film director Joe Cornish. It’s that familiarity that’s a part of keeping fans returning to Adam’s show. It’s no secret that we are fans of Adam’s and have enjoyed our own conversations with him over the years, and this poll position goes to show that he’s lost none of his flare after all these years.
Given how high it often sits in the charts, we’re not surprised to see The Diary of a CEO has polled for the first time, and previous magazine cover star Fearne Cotton has placed 3rd for the second time, having done the same in our 2020 poll.

2nd – THE GUILTY FEMINIST
3rd – EFFIN HORMONES
Brown Girls Do It Too have done it! They’ve toppled Deborah Frances-White and The Guilty Feminist off the top of the best Lifestyle & Culture category for the first time since our polls began. Poppy Jay and Rubina Pabani’s show explores the messy realities, fantasies, sexpectations and navigating life and relationships as British Asian women. It’s another show that has had an astronomical year, including a tour of their live show. They also appeared at the London Podcast Festival in September and hosted the Audio Production Awards in November.
The Guilty Feminist drops to 2nd place, but the Indy podcast Effin’ Hormones builds on its success at the British Podcast Awards this year – and with fans such as Idris Elba cheering them it’s no wonder.
2nd – FILMS TO BE BURIED WITH
3rd – CLASH OF THE TITLES
It’s a new WINNER, and a new show, but an old pairing that have been reliably among the most-downloaded podcast hosts of them all in the UK. When Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo left the BBC earlier this year, we didn’t have to wait long for Kermode & Mayo’s Take to fill the gap. The show is reassuringly familiar but the fresh format brought their takes on film and television to new listeners. Those listeners certainly voted in their masses this year! Read more about Kermode and Mayo’s move from radio to podcasting here >>
Brett Goldstein’s Film’s to be Buried With drops to second place, but considering how busy he’s been (staring in Marvel films, gracing the cover of our magazine) it’s understandable. Clash Of The Titles holds steady in third place for the second year in a row, proving there’s still plenty of films ready to do combat.
2nd – FOLK ON FOOT
3rd – ROCKONTEURS
Our list of the best Beatles Podcasts has been one of our most popular articles on the website this year, so it’s not that surprising to see the Beatles showing up on top here. But Nothing Is Real is a popular podcast on its own merit, even outside of the Beatles fame. Jason Carty and Steven Cockroft have enough Beatles knowledge to win the Beatles Brains of Ireland quiz, but they share stories in an accessible way for listeners.
Folk On Foot comes in second, a show that serves the folk community music with conversations and sounds of nature through plein air interviews. In a year of celebrity podcasts, we have Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp coming in to third place with Rockonteurs, the show he hosts with bass player to the stars Guy Pratt. And after several years of a BBC Sounds show topping this category, it’s somewhat nice to see the independent shows dominate this year.
2nd – THAT PETER CROUCH PODCAST
3rd – FOOTBALL RAMBLE
Even though it’s new, Beef’s Golf Club has already grown a big community who have helped it top this year’s polls. One of the things that may have led to its success is that this show so universal in who can listen. It is very welcoming to beginners and teaches the basics, rather than serving commentary to people who are already golf fans.
Despite the epic summer of football, football podcasts didn’t quite hit the target this year despite their ongoing popularity. That Peter Crouch Podcast drops to 2nd place after winning last year, and Football Ramble drops to third after its 2021 runner-up position.
2nd – THE REST IS POLITICS
3rd – THINGS FELL APART
In the first new category, the big publishers are using their platform to bring cutting-edge journalism to UK podcasts. The Guardian’s Can I Tell You A Secret? takes a sensitive look at the subject of stalking. Produced by an award-winning team, it features moving sound design from the fantastic Axel Kacoutie (a contender for the hardest-working-person-in-podcasting at the moment). We named this as a possible Podcast of the Year in our last magazine, and the voters seem to agree.
The Rest Is Politics comes in second with its unlikely double act of Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart, and Things Fell Apart was a short series from BBC Sounds, hosted by Jon Ronson, that helped us make sense of the culture wars.
2nd – ELIZA: A ROBOT STORY
3rd – JACKIE THE RIPPER
This is our first year for highlighting fiction podcasts in their own category, and The Magnus Archives has proved it’s still a classic of the genre. A horror fiction podcast examining what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, the show ran for nearly 6 years before coming to end this year. If you’re new to fiction podcasts, this is a great place to start.
Crowd Network’s Eliza: A Robot Story proves popular even though it came out later in the year, and shows that a sci-fi audio drama can reach a wide audience. And the gory story of Jackie The Ripper from Stak made its way to third place.
2nd – PICTURE THE SCENE
3rd – ECONOMICS IN TEN
The ‘Oh My Pod’ Independent Podcast poll is open to literally every independent podcast. Shows that win this category are hitting the all the right marks with their listeners and creating communities that can’t stop talking about their show. It is fiercely contested each year and seeing a podcast that focuses on mental health get to top of this list is testament to the way it resonates with listeners. We featured Tom’s show way back in June last year, and would like to think that helped its growth!
Once again, HUNDREDS of podcasts were put forward for this category to a massive thank you and congratulations to every podcast mentioned!
Congratulations to all our winners, runners up and nominees and thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for their favourite shows. We’re sure 2023 will be another incredible year for podcasting and look forward to celebrating it with another set of Pod Bible Poll’s at the end of the year!

]]>The post The Holiday Season: A detailed look at Nancy Meyers’s Christmas classic appeared first on POD BIBLE.
]]>The Holiday Season is a documentary podcast that takes a detailed look at director Nancy Meyers’s 2006 Christmas classic, The Holiday. Written and produced by Sam Clements and Louise Owen from 90 Minutes or Less Film Fest, and with music by Martin Austwick, it returns each Christmas with episodes that dive deep into the facts and fictions of the film.
Last year saw some special episodes to celebrate the 15th anniversary of a film that has become a cult classic. If you haven’t listened yet, be sure to check out the interview from leading man Jude Law (Graham) and an episode dedicated to Director Nancy Meyers, featuring answers from Meyers herself.
We caught up with Sam to ask about his particular love of The Holiday, and making The Holiday Season.
It was a thrill to speak to Jude Law and Nancy Meyers, I’d love to invite the rest of the main cast on the show (Cameron Diaz, Jack Black and Kate Winslet) But my dream guest would be composer Hans Zimmer, whose work I adore and is a long time Nancy Meyers collaborator.

Sam Clement in the pub Jude Law and Cameron Diaz filmed in in Shere, Surrey.
I genuinely adore the film. I’ve been in love with it since 2006 when I first watched it at the cinema.
I think romantic comedies and Christmas films are often seen as “light weight” subjects by the film journalism, and maybe aren’t taken as seriously as other types of movies. With The Holiday Season I wanted to celebrate the work that goes into BOTH of these genres, through the lens of The Holiday.
I never stop thinking about The Holiday! I watch it in full a couple of times each year but also watch a lot of clips, interviews, behind the scenes things as we make the show, so feel like I know it quite well.
I like that me and my wife Louise (who edits the show) can make a fairly expansive document on The Holiday, from our living room, without too much additional resource. Podcasting can be such an expressive medium and it’s uniquely placed to make a bond with the audience.
We’re making this based on our love of the film, and not for a commission or a job, and podcasting is probably the only medium we can make something of professional quality, using our experience of the format with tools we already have in the house.
So many! But I think I love the stories around dressing the village of Shere for its winter scenes in the height of summer. The crew sent all residents Christmas trees and decorations to put up in their houses in case their windows were in shot!
It’s the most thorough and time consuming podcast I make but I do love that it’s given me a good reason to speak to people involved in the film. It was a dream come to true to talk to Nancy Meyers – and hear that she’s listened to the episodes – but I also love our interview with Jude Law. I’ll have to tie between the director and actor shows!
Whether you’re obsessed with The Holiday, or have a passing interest in Christmas films, this is the show for you! We’ve made 8 or so episodes so far – and we have a new episode coming out for New Years Eve this year, so now’s a good time to catch up ahead of our latest ep!

]]>EB: Don’t laugh too loudly. It makes me cringe when I hear my laugh. I guess I get carried away, which is only a good thing.
Someone willing to have a conversation and allow that conversation to go wherever it may go. To not follow the usual premeditated answers that have been practised for a press tour. That’s why I love getting people out of that cycle.
Passion, genuine passion. I also think not being too informed on the subject. I’m a music and film fan, I know stuff but not everything and I like to learn from every guest, which I definitely do.
When I got home after interviewing directors Valerie Farris and Jonathan Denton who had just released, Battle of the Sexes and something happened to the audio, there was this constant whine that meant it was unusable. I crawled to the PR people and asked if there was anyway I could get another 20 mins with them. Knowing they were off to Europe to do more press, I was willing to jump on a plane or train to do it. Thankfully they had another screening the following night and very kindly said come along and we can chat after that. They were such good sports and very gracious and generous with their time.
The good ones are very intimate and the best ones make you feel involved in the conversation, like you are in the room with them. The worst ones are where you can tell that the host/s just love the sound of their own voices and their opinions are the only opinions. Immediate turn off for me.
Well it’s a funny one. The biggest compliment should be when people try and imitate what you do, but it doesn’t stop you from feeling a little pissed off that someone has basically ripped off your idea. They just wish they’d come up with it first and did it half as well as you do.
Not really no. It’s such a wonderful world and opportunity for people to explore and share their passions and stories. Mine came out of sheer frustration. I did a similar show on 6Music, my idea that I came up with, they wouldn’t give me a regular slot, as I knew I could give them a really good guest every week. So I said, fuck it, I’m going to do it myself. That is the amazing thing about podcasts.
Well there are two. The episode we recorded with Jon Favreau was our first ever and I am forever in his debt for being so enthusiastic and willing to jump on board with us. And then our very first episode with Ben Wheatley, he’s such a great supporter of the podcast, we appreciate his love so much. He’s been on three times now!
Oh man that’s a hard one. The one that has made me laugh the most and that I’ve probably listened to the most would be The Adam Buxton Podcast episode with Louis Theroux, the one where they drink an energy drink and get more and more wired the longer the chat goes on for. Genius and a great one to listen to on the tube, laughing out loud and making people think you are mad.

An interview show with a twist. Annie McGrath welcome Brett to choose an object or topic that inspires him, which Annie and Brett then create art about these chosen subjects. The vibe of this one is gentle with soft humour and feels as though you are there with them as they include clutter noises from the equipment and when the host and guest turn away to focus on their art. Secret Artists has guests on the show that are well known in British comedy, including Sophie Duker and Joe Lycett, so this is an excellent gateway into the show. Listen on your podcast app >>
In partnership with TV channel Dave and the charity Mind, hosts Aaron Gillies and Lauren Pattison invited Brett onto the show to talk about he lives his life without miserably (or so we think). Brett also reflects on his general mood throughout his childhood and the pressure to feel miserable to be a good artist. An honest and frank conversation about mental health sprinkled with a dishy sense of humour, this is a short and sweet episode where you can take a break from the over-produced, loud and glitzy podcasts. The show did finish in 2020 so if you are intrigued by it you won’t be as intimidated by the backlog. Listen on your podcast app >>
In this podcast, Brett joins sketch comedy trio, Beattie Edmondson, Camille Ucan, and Rose Johnson to plan the ultimate move night.
