If there’s one thing we know podcasts do really well, it’s getting deep into topics that may seem niche from the outside. Alex Lopategui takes a look at 5 podcast about sneakers…

Did I Ever Tell You The One About…MF DOOM is a podcast celebrating and documenting the life and work of MF DOOM, one of hip-hop’s greatest artists. This in-depth series has been created with the approval of DOOM’s widow and estate. The podcast is helmed by rapper-turned-podcaster MC Serch, a childhood friend of DOOM, and features contributions from DOOM’s friends, family and collaborators. The first two episodes of Did I Ever Tell You The One About… MF DOOM are now live and arrive ahead of the 1st anniversary of DOOM’s death (31st October). Subsequent instalments will be made available each week. The podcast is soundtracked by DOOM’s widely-celebrated music and presented using Immersive Sound Design, 5.1 stereo sound. You can catch the interview with MC Serch below!

MC Serch, why was it important to you personally to preserve the legacy of MF Doom with this all access podcast series?

It was not just myself.  My partner and wife Chantel and I were compelled to tell this story because we felt a sense of loss of not only someone I grew up with and lost touch with, but my wife lost her friend in some ways.  DOOM and Chantel (and DJ Subroc) were close in those days. So for both of us this became a way to get close to DOOM again by learning about him through those who knew him best.  I am so thankful to all the contributors who shared their stories with us.

MF’s nuanced and intricate lyrics coupled with smirk-inducing flows rapidly earned him legendary status in Hip-Hop. With a large list of friends, family and collaborators willing to contribute to the pod-series, what was the process of knitting and curating these individual accounts into a cohesive story like?

It is a great deal of work, but we have an amazing team around us.  DJ Eclipse who Co-Executive Produced this with us, is a family friend, and someone who is extremely detail focused.  So being able to bounce ideas of episodes off of him, and him giving me feedback on who we should reach out to was critical.  Bret “Epic” Mazur, who is also a family friend, has become the go to sound design producer in Hollywood and was so helpful at crafting the stories.  Nick Davila, our young gun in the sound design studio is a DOOM fan, pure and simple.  So for him (and us) he was so helpful in asking us questions about DOOM and his life.  So it helped us in gaining insight as to what should go where and when.  Every member of this team gave myself and Chantel the right questions to ask, which in turn helped craft the episodes.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the sound design on this podcast is seemingly a reflection of the respect and admiration you have for your subjects. How important was the time spent and quality of the sound design in creating an immersive and nostalgic experience?

Our company, The Timeless Podcast Company, is built on the fact that we want to tell our stories in immersive sound design.  We spent years researching how drivers in your headphones work, how sound design in cars works, how if you wanted to listen to this in your home theatre or through your SONOS, how that would work.  Our shows our about preserving the history of the greatest to bless the mic, and do it in a way that not only tell their story better than anyone, but bring you into their world through theatre of the mind.  For the most part they came up during a time where their stories and even career was dwarfed because the genre had not caught up to the importance of the culture.  So the sound design is so important to me and my partner.

I remember reading The Source when Nas’s Illmatic came out.  He received 5 mics and the review made me so proud to have a small part in the making of that album (as the Executive Producer).  The only critique they had of the album was that it was too short.  It left them wanting more.  Fast forward to when I read the comments and the ratings for our podcasts and they give us high marks for the storytelling and I read that it was not only great storytelling but the sound design was EPIC, I get a similar feeling.  It’s that nod to the work our team has done in bringing the fans of DOOM, and Big Daddy Kane, the ability to feel them, not just hear their stories.

How do you think ‘artistry’ in Hip-Hop has changed over the decades. Do you think mastery of craft is still as important these days in creating masterpieces such as MadVillainy?

The conversation about the changing of the artistry is getting old, for me personally.  I don’t see a change in “artistry”.  The craft of telling stories as an emcee is not only alive and well, but in my opinion, better than it has ever been.  The mastery of wordplay in the hands of so many talented emcees today, in my opinion, is double what it once was.  Back in the day I could name maybe 30 great emcees.  Today, I can name those same 30 plus another 60 or more.  All with as much talent, with their words, their effort and their artistry.  We were extremely fortunate to come up when we did – to see the early creators of intricate word flow and posture, whose lyrics then transformed those who make music today.  We live in a different time and in these times you either grow or die.  I choose to grow and accept the change, and look for the best in the talent out there, opposed to be grumpy and complain.

What do your listeners have to look forwards to over the coming months?

The upcoming episodes of The Did I Ever Tell You The One About…MF DOOM are F**KING AMAZING and will blow fans away!!!

We also have our Breaking Anonymity podcast with Veteran Music Journalist Kyle Eustice and myself talking recovery over addiction through a 12 step program.  We speak with amazing people like Royce Da 5’9″, Brandon Novak, Danny Boy O’Connor, Slaine (to name a few) about not only about overcoming addiction but how a 12 step program saved their lives.  And my interview podcast “Serch Says” where I do one-on-one interviews with people like Chris Rock, Questlove, Neal Brennan, Bun B, Joseph Sikora (Tommy from the hit TV show “Power”) and many others.)

This week, Pod Bible caught up with the award-winning The Europeans to talk about their process, preparation and much more. The podcast was founded in 2017 by two British friends, Paris-based journalist Katy Lee and Amsterdam-based opera singer Dominic Kraemer. In association with Are We Europe magazine, it looks at politics and culture around the continent. The duo delve into the stories that don’t get enough attention in the national media and interview fascinating people across Europe, from writers to activists, scientists to chefs.

What was the drive behind starting the podcast and with so much going on in Europe every second, how do you go about selecting your topics for conversation?

Katy: The podcast was born in late 2017. It kind of grew out of Brexit in that, as two Brits, we felt like when “Europe” got talked about in our national media, it was almost as if Europe and Brexit were the same thing and there was nothing worth following in European news that wasn’t Brexit. As two people living on the continent — me in Paris, and Dominic in Amsterdam — we knew of course that this wasn’t true. I was working as a journalist covering French politics at the time, and Dominic is a total news junkie, so we knew there were all kinds of topics worth talking about. But we also felt they could be made more accessible, so we wanted to make a podcast that talked about European politics in a fun and approachable way.

Dominic: I noticed that I knew so much more about what was going on in America than I did about what was happening in the continent I was living in. I was, like most European citizens, pretty oblivious to how the institutions of the European Union worked and I was initially worried that this ignorance would be a problem when making a podcast about Europe. But in the end, I think our status as relative outsiders from the ‘Brussels-bubble’ has actually helped make our podcast a success. Week on week, we are trying to cut through the Euro-jargon and to learn more about how Europe works, bringing our audience along with us on this somewhat nerdy ride.

Katy: In terms of where our topics come from, a lot of them just come from news stories we’ve been following in any particular week, whether it’s an election or some juicy political scandal. Between us our team speaks five languages so we try to keep an eye on different national media around the continent, but of course there’s far more going on than we can keep track of. So quite often, we get brilliant ideas sent in for topics or potential guests from our listeners, by email or on Instagram or Twitter.

What does preparation for your topics typically look like?

Katy: Our style is pretty chatty and conversational, but actually a huge amount of research goes into making the show each week! We’re very conscious that we’re not experts on what’s happening in every country, so we make sure we read as widely as possible on topics that we’re going to talk about as it’s super important to us that we get it right. Quite often I will hunt down local experts on whatever topic it is we’re talking about and read everything they’ve written or tweeted about it.

Political and cultural views tend to be topics of discussion avoided at the dinner table, how careful are you when introducing personal opinions?

Katy: It’s a difficult line to tread! I don’t feel like the point of our podcast is to tell people what to think, necessarily, and I’m always wary of shoving my views down other people’s throats. But at the same time I don’t think we necessarily try to hide it when we have an opinion about something. For me the ideal balance is not hiding my own opinions, but trying not to give the impression that I’m trying to tell people how to think either.

Dominic: I remember that Katy, was initially pretty reluctant to express any hint of her own opinion at all on the show. I totally got that for her as a professional journalist who is trained to report neutrally on the news. I was, on the other hand, as an opera singer with no journalistic training, initially a bit looser with expressing my opinions. Over the years, I think we have both shifted a bit towards each other’s default position and found a happy medium in our chatter.

What do you have coming soon that your listeners can look forward to!?

Katy: I’m really looking forward to seeing episodes two and three of the visual podcast series (that’s right, visual podcasts!) that we’re making with Are We Europe. The series is called This Is What A Generation Sounds Like and it’s a series of eight very intimate stories told by young people around Europe. The first of these, “Josh and Franco”, was about a father and son in southern Italy who are both gay, having a very raw and honest conversation about their relationship and the difficulties of coming out in a very macho culture. It was so amazing to see the design wizards at Are We Europe turn the podcast into something that can be watched as well as heard, and we can’t wait to see what they do with the second and third of these stories.

Alex Lopategui is joined by The Breaking Atoms Podcast for an exclusive interview. Rap Scientists Sumit Sharma (SS) and Chris Mitchell (CM) deconstruct their process into creating the ‘Blueprint series’ as well as their approach to archiving the truth about Hip Hop culture, issues and politics. With clinical analysis and expert guests, the curation of this podcast is unbelievable. Catch the interview below!

I am intrigued to understand what it is that makes ‘The Blueprint’ so central to Hip Hop history and what made you focus on the record for the series?

SS: Following on from our Reasonable Doubt album, it felt right to close the Jay-Z chapter with this album because it was the project that solidified his name in the history books. Commercially, The Blueprint was a step-change from the sound that was prevalent at the time. For me, I always look at it as the Illmatic of the 2000s. This album is more than the hit records and timeless quotables. It’s about the other cast members. Blueprint brought back the sound of the golden age, but a 2.0. In Just Blaze, Kanye West, Young Guru, Kyambo’ Hip Hop’ Joshua, and Bink, we see a group of individuals, all of whom have had a profound impact on Hip Hop. When we talk about history, it’s important to recognise more than Jay-Z.

I think the word that comes to mind when listening to the series is ‘Curation’. The vast amount of content and guest features is astonishing. What was your ethos behind the series and how did you manage to succinctly include it all?

SS: In an age where ‘fake news’ is an actual phrase, it’s incredibly important to carry on to ensure that history is written or curated correctly. Our ethos is to approach this as journalists. We move with integrity and authenticity, and our goal is to focus on the subject, not us. Me and Chris are merely conduits to the information.

CM: Putting a narrative documentary together is not easy, especially when you consider we did the Reasonable Doubt series in 2 months and this Blueprint series in a month and a half. But this is where our knowledge and audio prowess comes into play. There’s a lot that gets left on the cutting room floor. Like any author, they have to make editorial decisions into what gets included and what doesn’t. The thought process is generally ‘does this add more value to the story, and does it fit the narrative arch?’

SS: We are truly grateful to every contributor because it’s their perspective that makes the documentaries so riveting. We share any wins with them.

Cross pollination of excellent talent surrounding an artist in theory leads to something quite special. Kanye West, JustBlaze and Biggs just to name a few were all responsible for engineering a cohesive sound pallet for Jayz. How different does this record sound without their influences and how involved do you think JayZ was with building that team?

CM: Without Just Blaze, Kanye and Bink, you don’t get this seminal piece of work.

SS: A lot of credit has to go to Biggs and Dame Dash when you think about the team Rocafella built. Jay-Z would have had a hand, as would have others. Just Blaze and Kymabo Joshua were instrumental in bringing Young Guru into the fold. Taking a football analogy, you may have Pep or Jurgen Klopp as the star name you see, but there are coaches behind them that help build that team.

Have you set your sights on a new series? If so, why have you chosen it?
