THE BOOK OF JOE – Recent Podcast Highlights #010

Every fortnight, guest writer Joe Ducarreaux picks out his recent podcast highlights in an effort to provide yet more wonderful content for your ears. Joe is an avid podcast listener who has been known to listen to over 40 episodes in just one week. To be honest we’re surprised he found time to write this column…

THIS WEEKS MUST LISTEN:

THE QUEER MOVIE PODCAST

Rowan Alice and Jazza John present this fantastic movie podcast, critically analysing representations of LGBTQ+ in cinema. Their discussion of Oscar-winning Moonlight drew my attention to this show, as it’s one of my favourite films and I was instantly warmed to the hosts. Each month, one film is picked by the podcast’s audience from a shortlist of four from a different genre. That film is then analysed for its strengths and weaknesses in representing different genders and sexualities on-screen. Blending excellent reading of film and discussions of issues from walks of like in which I have little experience, I hugely enjoyed listening to different perspectives of a film I love. Fantastically entertaining guests and insightful opinions- an absolute joy!

BALANCE PODCAST – EPISODE 20: WILL POULTER

Hosted by the great James Gill (the greatest stage-diving comedian the world has ever seen), The Balance podcast is the sister show to the Balance magazine and features interviews with filmmakers, comedians and presenters with a focus on mental health and wellbeing. Previous guests include Ricky Gervais, Fearne Cotton and Matt Forde, but this conversation with Will Poulter gives an insight into making the recent Ari Aster-directed film Midsommar. Gill and Poulter hit it off, making reference to a previous conversation, the pair discuss Poulter’s back-catalogue as well as techniques for keeping one’s mental health in check. Great insight and fantastic to have mental health and wellbeing as the underlying theme for conversations.

THE JOE ROGAN EXPERIENCE #1319 – JOEY DIAZ

There are times when I look at my New Releases list on my podcast app and I give a satisfied sigh, or a fist-bump to the sky and one of those occasions is when I see Joey Diaz’s name appear in the Joe Rogan feed. Heralded by Rogan himself as the funniest man on the planet, Diaz’s thick New Jersey accent, grating coughs and enthusiasm for life makes him an absolute highlight. Here, Joey explodes while telling Joe how great The Blues Brothers is, the pair discuss the advances in visual effects and Joey describes the terrifying notion of the governments’ ultimate weapon being drones with razor blades stuck to them. Tremendous.
